"His name is Richter Abend," replied Saturos. "He always wore such a nice outfit. Collared jacket, pants, the works. I'd ask him why, and he always used to tell me what it was because he came from a famous family of mercenaries, and that he was dressing the part. Abend..." The myrmidon shrugged. The name didn't mean much to him other than the fact it was Richter's last name. "I'd never heard the name before I met Richter. Now all I know about them is that they're all dead." He turned to look at Syana, tilting his head. "You're from Ilia. You know anything about the Abends?"

"Abend... Abend..." Syana had a frustrated look on her face. She knew she had heard that name before, but she couldn't remember why. It had to be something important or else she wouldn't recognize it. Clearly it had something to do with their shared line of work, but what? "The name certainly sounds familiar... But I can't remember why. Maybe it was something I heard from one of my brothers or a former employer. Sorry I don't remember more." She shrugged. "Maybe I'll remember it better later."

Saturos waved a hand dismissively. "Don't worry about it, it's not really important. I was just wondering," he said casually. Had Richter just been full of hot air? He had always sounded so sure of himself. Maybe that's just the kind of person he was.
The myrmidon stretched his arms out and put them behind his head, cocking his head slightly toward the red-headed girl. "So, you talk about your brothers a lot," he said with a grin. "Mind telling me more about them?

Syana gave a little grin, she hadn't realized she had been doing that but wasn't surprised. "Well, I have five of them." She giggled a little. "They're an interesting bunch. We're all mercenaries, as were our parents, just who we are I guess. My second oldest brother is the most well known of us all. I don't know how he does it, he's just so good. My third oldest had to quit. He lost his arm on a mission once. It wasn't pretty; mom wasn't very happy. I haven't much from my fourth brother, so I guess he's been keeping busy. I traveled with my youngest brother for a bit before meeting up with you two, but he left when word reached up of our oldest brother being seriously injured. He rushed off to check on him and left me on my own. I haven't heard from any of them since..."

Saturos nodded in acknowledgment. Seemed like mercenaries came in clans. Then again, when you came from the second most barren country on the continent and one of your only lines of work payed just enough to buy yourself money to eat, it made sense.
"All those brothers..." replied the myrmidon. He looked up to the sky. "I'm an only child, so I wouldn't know what it's like to have all those siblings." He sighed. "Sounds like a lot of fun, though."

Syana gave a little smile. "Yeah, I guess you could say it was fun. A lot of competitions though. I didn't get this tough just by wondering around, you know. We all tested each other daily. I remember one time two of them were wrestling and ended up breaking a chair. Still don't know how they did it, but Mom wasn't happy." She laughed at the memory. "It'll be nice to see them all again someday."
She looked over at the swordsman. "So what about you?"

The myrmidon chuckled at Syana's story. It sounded amusing, he thought, life with siblings. He had always heard people complain about their siblings, but he himself couldn't help but think he might have been missing out.
"So what about you?"
Saturos raised an eyebrow. "So what about me, what?" he asked.

Now it was Syana's time to laugh. "What about your family, silly. I told you all about mine, so it's only fair I get to know about yours." Truthfully, she was very curious to learn more about her traveling companion and learning about him family seemed like the perfect way. "So chop chop," she said with a wink.

"Ah, my family, right," said Saturos, putting a finger to his chest. "Well, let's see. There's nothing particularly interesting. I was born in Etruria. I'm an only child. My father is a merchant and my mother tends the house. Both their fathers were merchants, and my parents expected me to be the same." He shrugged. "If you haven't noticed, I'm not quite merchant material. I wouldn't be able to hawk goods and crunch numbers all day. I wanted to join the military. I wanted to go adventuring. My parents weren't exactly thrilled. My father was telling me I'd never be able to support and family on a soldier's pay and my mother kept worrying about how I'd kill myself."
The myrmidon shook his head. "I decided that if I was going to have any peace of mind about it, I'd leave the country and go journey off on my own, so I hitched a ride with some traveling performers, ironically as their bookkeeper, and eventually signed up with the Bernese army."

Syana smiled a little as Saturos talked. Him, a merchant? Ha! She could see why he'd chosen the life of a soldier instead. Merchant... She laughed a little inside as she continued to listen. "The Bernese army, huh? That must have been pretty interesting." She knew something must have happened, though. Why else would he shift from soldier to traveling swordsman. "Did you have a falling out with the army? Is that why you're here?"

Saturos shook his head. "It wasn't exactly a falling out," replied the myrmidon. He paused and shrugged. "They left me for dead. Understandably, of course. My entire unit was decimated except for Richter and I, and I was half dead and he was nearly dead." Saturos picked something out of his teeth and flicked it onto the grass. "If I was another soldier, I'd have just assumed we were dead bodies and kept moving."

Syana gave a little nod. Made sense, at least. Must have been tough to have so many people he knew... She didn't even want to think about it. "I'm sorry... that sounds... horrible." She gave his shoulder a pat and kept walking. Her thoughts drifted back to her brother and she wondered if he was still alive. She forced herself away from those thoughts. She couldn't think about that now. She looked over at Saturos again and gave a little smile. "I do have to say, I love the war paint."

"It's all events long past," said the myrmidon with a shrug. "I try not to think about it. I don't think my comrades would want me to dwell on it either." He looked up at a passing cloud in the clear blue sky. "They died as they lived: full of battle and vigor. I doubt they'd have wanted to go any other way. I doubt I'd want to go any other way. I can't imagine dying sick in a bed." The myrmidon frowned. "Heck, I can't even imagine myself being old."
Saturos paused as Syana commented on his facepaint. "Haha, this?" he asked, pointing to his face. "Yeah, my commander used to wear warpaint before he went into battle. It sort of caught on, and eventually we were all doing it." The swordsman stretched out his shoulders. "Now I wear it as a sort of memento. When people ask, I can tell them about the courage of my old friends."

Syana had to admit, that was pretty cool. Saturos just kept getting more and more interesting. "Maybe I should wear some too. Then we could match." She gave him a playful wink. "Besides, I think I'd look pretty good in warpaint, don't you?" She laughed as she said that. She had actually been wondering what she'd look like with paint like him, so why not just ask? Simplest route to find out what someone else thought about it, and Saturos, besides being the only other person there, wouldn't be afraid to speak his mind.

Saturos chuckled. Syana's interest in his warpaint was amusing. "It'd be just like old times," said the myrmidon with a laugh. They could be the traveling warpaint duo. "It's not really a fashion statement, but I think you'd be able to pull off the look better than most." He shrugged. "I could always help you with it if you want me to, you know, me being experienced with the stuff and all."
