Like always, Ralph wasn't aware of how much time had passed since he left the shrine. He trusted Caecus's sense of direction, and so believed he was heading back to Lycia at least.
The road started to incline, he must be leaving the plains by now. He assumed he was West enough so that he could just go over the mountains rather than go through Bern again.
"It seems we're almost back in Lycia, Caecus. Look out for the road through the mountains for me." Caecus continued to pinch Ralph every time he strayed from the path.
It pained him to leave after promising to help Karina, but it was too late now. Nothing to do but return to Pherae. Back to the baker's life, perhaps adventuring wasn't what was needed from him now.

Suddenly, a voice came from further ahead on the path. "Hey kid, this is a toll road, can't you read the sign?"
Ralph imagined the voice was pointing to some crudely-made sign, probably misspellt as well.
"No." he said plainly. It must've been night if the voice couldn't see his bandage.
"Oh, well it is a toll road, it took us a lot of hard work to get this road here, you know."
The joker wouldn't give up. That's how they would get you, an entire facade.
"I'm sorry, I don't carry money on me. Can I pass without paying?"
"Hey, I don't make the rules kid. If you want a free road, you can go around the mountains through Bern."
That was the breaking point for Ralph. This little joke was too much for him now. "I will NOT go through Bern, and you will let me pass or else!" He unsheathed his heavier sword.
"Sorry kid, but this is Lycia. If you can't abide by our rules you can go back to Sacae." Ralph could hear the man's knuckles pop, and a swing of a weapon through the air. Something heavy, like a large sword or axe. That was the first thing Ralph had to determine in a fight, what exactly he was fighting.

The enemy's weapon swung downward, whistling through the air. The movement of the air made Ralph think that the blade was long, like a sword, not an axe. Ralph dashed backward, almost tripping on the ground itself. *thunk* The sword hit the ground. It wasn't likely to stay there long, and Ralph didn't have the strength to parry something as large as that.
Thinking quickly, he used his left hand to pull out his heavier sword, trapping his opponent's sword underneath. His light sword moved forward until he heard the enemy's breath quicken. "Come now, we don't want this fight to drag on. Just hand over what you've taken and I'll be on my way."
The man, probably not wanting to risk being killed for such a lame job, gave Ralph a sack of money. It wasn't very heavy, there probably weren't many people that used this road. "The law is gonna hear about you, thief."
"You don't want me to kill you, do you? I can move my sword a little bit further, if you'd like." The man said nothing else.
Ralph continued along the path with his swords drawn. Hopefully that man didn't have accomplices.

Eventually the road flattened out, then sloped downward. Ralph enjoyed being out in the wilderness, even if Caecus had to constantly poke at him to keep him on the path. It beat being in the stuffy Bakery all day. Maybe he would ask Bill for a job in delivery when he returned.
Indeed he had done some delivery jobs, such as bringing the breads to the small military fort. That was just something on the side he occasionally did.
It took many hours of walking, but it seemed that the surroundings leveled off. His feet trodded the worn, flat path away from the mountains with a sack of gold clacking at his waist.
Bill wasn't going to be too happy about this. Not after leaving without saying goodbye. At least he was returning with something to allow Bill to give to charity. Ralph could already imagine Bill sulking angrily. Soon there would be bent handles on every dish from his mighty grip.
