"Then why did you not tell me before?" he insisted, eyebrows furrowing in irritation.
"Because you were not ready. You still are not ready." The old woman retorted. "You barely survived your last encounter, do you honestly think you have a chance now?" she asked.
"It's better than sitting around here doing nothing!" He shot back. "I had a life! For better or for worse! And now I'm nothing! I've not a name or a past or a purpose! Do you honestly expect me to continue living this way!?"

The old woman locked eyes with the young man. They simply stared at eachother, unspeaking, untill neither were sure how much time had passed. "I cannot guarantee your safety." the old woman warned him. "If the Darkness overwhelms you, there will be no coming back this time."
"I know." The youth replied. "I am perfectly aware of the risk. In fact, I'm absolutely certain that I'm a fool to take it. But I would rather be a dead fool than live without reason."

The old woman watched him, searching for any traces of doubt, but she could find none. "Very well, you stubborn boy." she relinquished, rising from her chair. Taking small, slow steps, she approached an old satchel, and from it produced a book bound with a darkened cover. "This tome was with you when I found you." she stated. "It shows that it has seen its share of use in the past. I suspect this is the tome you were using when you succumbed." The old woman held the tome out with both hands.

The young man carefully took the book from her, and stared at the cover. He could feel his hands trembling, but not simply from excitement. He could feel something within this book. Something strangely familiar. Opening it, he scanned over the runes. "I know these letters..." he stated in soft wonderment, turning the pages, briefly skimming over each one before going to the next.

The old woman nodded "Just as I thought." she replied, taking a seat in her chair once more. "It will be dangerous. You will have to reach out and touch the Darkness once more, and I cannot tell for sure what will happen. Last time, you were lucky. It took a piece of your mind and soul, but somehow you were able to hold onto your sense of individuality. This time will not be the same. Either you will reclaim yourself, or the Darkness will claim all of you." she warned.

The youth nodded. "I know." he replied, taking a seat on his bedding, the tome splayed before him. Running his fingers over the page, he glanced up. "...Should this be my last, I wanted to thank you. You saved me and took me into your home. I can never repay you for that." The two met eyes once more, and the old woman nodded.

"Be careful, child." the old woman warned. The youth nodded, and turned his eyes to the book. "Wait a moment." she interupted. "I never told you my name. It's-"
"Don't." The youth interjected. "You can tell me after. That way, I'll have one to give you in return." He said, looking at her, smiling for the first time since he had arrived. The old woman chuckled, and nodded. "Well..." he turned his attention to the book, and closed his eyes once more. The words came naturally, from where he did not know, but he could feel the all too familiar chill of nothingness.

Where am I? What is this feeling? He could feel nothing. It was as if he wasn't even a living creature anymore. Hmm? Who is that? .... Oh, hello. What is this place? .... I see. I am looking for something, can you help me? .... Why not? .... It is not here? What do you mean? .... No hope? There is always hope. .... No. You're wrong. .... I am not listening to you. .... I don't care. Get out of my way. Now. Light flooded the youth's senses, and he opened his eyes and looked around. He was in a white hallway, with doors lined on each wall. "...Where am I?"

The youth ventured down the hall, looking at the dull white doors. "How strange.." he commented. He reached out to clasp the handle of one door, but could not get it to open. Frowning, he stepped to the next one, only to get the same result. He then tried a third, to the same effect. "Why won't they open?" he wondered aloud, looking around.
The youth caught something in passing that he had not noticed before. One of the doors had markings. Venturing closer, he could see that they were runes. "What is this...?" He brought up a hand, and ran it along the carvings. He didn't know how or why, but he understood each strange letter. "ﮒﺞﺀﭖ"
He heard a sharp click as he muttered the strange word, and looked at the handle. Reaching down, he turned the knob, and pulled the door open. He could see nothing beyond the threshold. "...I see." he said to himself. "...So be it. I'm not afraid of the Darkness." And so, he stepped inside.

His sense were flooded, a haze sweeping over him. At first, he wondered what had happened, but the haze slowly receded, and his vision cleared. "This is..." He looked around. It was a city, surrounded by walls. "I know this place..." he said to himself. "But how...?"
The sound of laughter gained his attention, and he turned to see a group of children playing ball in the streets. He smiled softly as he watched them, but when he looked passed them, he saw another child. He was sitting on the steps of a house, reading a rather large book. His face was eerily familiar. "Is that...me?" he wondered aloud, though no one could hear him.
"Hey, ------! Stop being so boring, come play with us!" one of the children called, waving to the boy. This caused both the child and the young man watching to frown, though for different reasons.
"I thought he said his name...but I couldn't quite catch it..." he noted to himself, disappointed and confused. How could he not have heard the name, as loud as the child was?"
"I don't have time for your stupid games!" the child on the steps spat back in a harsh tone. "Leave me alone!" Grumbling, he stuck his nose back in the book he was reading.
"...What an unpleasant child..." The spectating youth noted. Was that really him?
"------!" Someone called, causing both past and present versions of the young man to turn towards the familiar voice.
The youth hopped up, dropping the book he had been reading, and rushed towards the figure, quick to hug his larger frame. The spectator smiled softly as his younger self hugged his elder brother. He didn't know whether to laugh or be shocked when his smaller self pounded against his older brother with tiny, ineffectual fists. "You made me drop my book, you big dummy!"

The young man watched as his brother laughed at his younger self and scooped him up, still ignoring his weak blows, and set him on his shoulders. He started parading around, and the little one started crying and flailing. "Waaa! Let me down! You're going to drop me!" he cried, before clinging to his brothers head for dear life.
The young man felt like he could have watched the moment forever, but as he watched, he felt something pull him. "Hmm?" He looked at his hand to see that it was turning translucent. Looking up, he could see everything fading away like sand. "My time here is up." he commented as he felt the pull engulf him, his vision covered by darkness.
Tack tack.
The youth stepped out of the doorway and turned as the door shut behind him. The dark letters remained, but the doorknob had disappeared. "Allright then. Lets find the next one..." he commented, looking around. Sure enough, the door opposite to him had turned dark, bearing the same inscription as the last. Stepping towards it, he took hold of the doorknob and recited the word, before stepping in, the darkness overtaking him again.

How long had he been here? How long ago since he first came to this strange, empty place? To be honest, he did not know. It could have been months. Days. Years. Yet he felt no hunger, no weariness. He simply went from door to door, peering in, becoming emmersed in what they held. Memories. His memories. His brother. His friends. His enemies. Happyness and sorrow. Life and death. An entire lifetime was rolled out before his very eyes.
Yet, no matter how many doors he opened, how many memories he saw, he still did not know who he was. He could not even hear his own name. Each time they spoke it, he could not seem to catch it. "It sees I've found everything except what I need." he muttered bitterly. This hallway went on forever. Door, after door, after door, in this never ending stretch. He couldn't stand it. He had been through countless doors, seen countless memories, the most trivial of recollections, and yet he could not see the end.
"I'm tired of this." he growled, approaching another door. "Am I to spend eternity doing this!?" It had been an angry outburt, nothing more, yet it hit him like a ton of bricks. His hand gripped the door, trembling, before he let out a grim laugh. "Of course. I didn't even realise it." he chuckled with an ironic smirk. "You've been playing me this whole time, haven't you?" he asked, his smirk dropping, replaced with a look of anger. "You're just keeping me here, wasting my time with pointless memories, humoring me like a child. Aren't you?"
There was no answer, save his own echo, but he knew better. "Do not play dumb with me. I will not give in to your deceit. I'm tired of this game. I want back what has been taken, and you will give it to me!" The hall seemed to groan, starting to shake. "I'm not afraid of you. I refuse to be lead around like a puppet on a string any longer. Give. It. BACK!"
The hall shook violently, roaring in anger, the walls seeming to close in around him. "Make all the noise you want! Throw your little tantrum! I don't care! I will not let you have it! It is mine! I will bring it back with me, or I will destroy it here, but you will not have it!" The young man shouted. He could feel the power surging around him. Such a familiar, intoxicating feeling. "That man is dead! Even if I get him back, it's too late! I, He, We will never be the same! But we will be free! I will be free! It doesn't matter who or what I was! I'm here now! I'm me, and I won't let you take that from me again!"
The walls began to crumble, the floor split open, debris fell from the ceiling around the young man, as dark energy crackled around his body. "Get out of my way!" he roared, throwing his hands forward. The energy ran down his arms, out his fingers, a wave of pure blackness flowing forth, eating away at his white prison, destroying all in it's path. It spread around him, shattering everything, taking it all into oblivion.
It was over in a moment. He was surrounded by darkness. Total darkness. And before him was a single door. There was no carvings, no bright colors, nothing. Just a simple door. Stepping forward, the young man opened it, and stepped in.
"You found me." The voice was so familiar. He looked down at the young man before him, sitting there on the floor, weak, helpless. Staring down at himself, the young man smiled.
"Of course I did." he replied. "What did you expect? After all, I'm you." he reminded him, holding out his hand. "Are you ready to go?" he asked. He looked up to himself, smiled weakly, and nodded.
"Yeah." he replied, reaching out to take his hand. The young man pulled him up, and they stood there, hands clasped together. "We can never go back." he said. "We can never go back to the way things were. The world has changed. We have changed."
"I know." he agreed. "But that's all right. No matter what, we'll keep on going. Because that's who we are." Smiling, he gripped his hand, feeling the world around them beginning to fade away. "Lets go, Mavick." Nodding, the two walked hand in hand, waking from the horrible nightmare.
