The zombie came running at Soul, arms stretched out, like it was ready to collide and tear Soul apart. Her mouth twitched as she saw the horrible looking creature. She retreated slowly, losing her stable thinking as she started panicking, just looking at it.
The zombie just was a few inches away from Soul when it raised its claws real high. Soul just hopped back, dodging it barely, and this snapped her back to her senses. She immediately remembered that she was holding a light tome. How stupid of her to panic like that!
She immediately flipped through a few pages, walking backwards while she was at it. She found found it just as she almost tripped backwards. The zombie marched towards her, its eyes filled with the emotion of pure...hunger. And evil.
As to what did Soul find? A spell effective against the undead, an ancient line of text that was just thought to be part of mythology. Or so she thought. Well, if this didn't work, she might as well call herself a dead woman.
"Take... that!" she screamed as she raised her hand, which glowed a bright yellow. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she said it. Maybe she was desperate too, but it wasn't like the zombies looked any nice.
Then, all of a sudden, rays of like started to burst out of the zombie's right leg, like it was being purged in sunlight. The zombie gave a shrill shriek, so piercing, it left Soul daze for a few seconds. The zombie then fell forwards, just missing Soul by a few steps.
Soul bit her lip as she saw what she had done to the creature. So, she had killed it? She thought she had, and gave a sigh of relief, she made her way towards the festival grounds, where all the action was taking place. Like, Hal and Elesia getting cornered by zombies.
Wait what?? Cornered by zombies?? Sould had to help them!! Her eyes widened as she saw Elesia plummet to the ground after bursting a zombie's head into flames. So, she was a mage, huh? That surprised Soul a bit. She didn't expect the two who saved her to be people whoc could, well, fight, or cast magic.
Soul snapped out of her useless deep thinking. Now was not the time to wonder who those two really were, or about giving in to zombies. She had to save them from the zombies... and get them out of this place! She had to repay them after they gave her food when she had almost starved to death.
"HAL!! STAND UP HAL! I'M COMING!" she screamed as she cast another light spell on a zombie that was closing in on Hal and Elesia. There was a burst of light and the zombie fell a few feet back.
Little did she know that the zombie she had hit earlier had recovered and was following her.

Ground was surprisingly soft. Everything was still fuzzy as hell, but there was also enough hurting and pain and discomfort and too-bright light for Elesia to believe that she was actually dead. She was quite aware that she was suffering from a minor concussion - not that she knew the medical term for it - but it was so much easier to just... lie there for a minute. Just another few seconds, she told herself. Nothing wrong with taking a minute or two to recover herself after that explosion. It was only natural.
It took her a few more moments to realize that the sky was Hal's face, which made perfect sense for a few more moments before she realized that it was more likely Hal that she was staring at thn the sky. Unless he was also the sky. ...Nope. Just Hal. She smiled, a lopsided grin that definitely reached her eyes - more than it reached her lips, actually, given how much work it was to move. Very lopsided. Elesia was secretly glad that she couldn't see how much of a mess she looked like right now, because she had the sinking feeling that she looked like a murderer given how much blood there was everywhere. Ugh. Sticky as crap. "Don't worry. It isn't all mine!"
She groaned, realizing that speaking had been a really bad idea. Her chest still hurt like hell. At least her lungs hadn't exploded. Yet. It took a few seconds to realize that she was lying on Hal, and then her general sense of the scene finally caught up. Unless he was also the ground, that meant he had probably caught her. She remembered hearing something that had sounded like him, but being on top of an exploding zombie had kinda been messing with her perceptions at the time. That had been rather gentlemanly of him!
"...You were kinda cool there. Thanks."
And then there was a horrible screeching and Elesia jerked upright, realizing on the way up that she was not going to make it upright and the ground was coming back again. God DAMMIT. She flopped to the ground, managing to land on her butt for once rather than on her face, and surveyed her surroundings with a bleary-eyed alertness that - oh cool there was a giant flying lizard in the vicinity eating zombies.
"What."

Hal had held onto Elesia's waist for a minute then dropped his arms to the ground. Seeing Elesia smile, or try to had brought a smile to Hal's face. "Heh. I told you I would protect you from anything. I'm just trying my best." Hal's breathing was still a quick deep breaths. If he could get that part under control he wouldn't mind just laying there with Elesia for a while, that would mean he wouldn't have to move.
He had heard familiar screeching, with much effort he raised his head enough to see a wyvern. His ears and eyes must be playing a joke on him, wyverns weren't native to this area or he thought. "It's a wyvern!" Hal said with great joy. He just wanted to get up and go pet it but Elesia was on top of hi-wait when did she get up? With much pain Hal rose to his feet. He started to stumble towards the wing beast which was currently swinging it's tail at a zombie to put it on the ground. He wanted to pet it so badly, maybe even hug it.
He had remembered his dreams that he was a wyvern flying across the sky without a worry. Soaring so majestically he owned the sky. It's been a couple of years since he was lucky enough to ride that one he saw before joining the army. He longed to ride one again. HEY MAYBE THIS ONE WOULD LET HIM RIDE IT!

High on adrenaline - and pain, there was definitely a lot of that and the world was still a bit fuzzy and her hearing was sort of messed up, but none of that mattered because holy crap what the hell was that flying thing - Elesia found herself a little less reserved than usual, too relieved to be alive and even moreso that Hal was... well, not exactly okay, but alive. Which actually described both of them really accurately. Jesus, it was like that episode with the angry mama grizzly bear she'd had to wrestle a few years back; alive, but covered in blood - in both cases, much of it not hers - and beaten to a pulpy finish.
But they had survived, and the guards were finishing off a zombie, and Hal was looking at that giant flying lizard thing with about as much interest as she was, which was to say sort of a lot. "I think you need m-me to protect you about as much. You're in horrible shape." Elesia said it all with an immature grin, caught up in the moment too far to care what she said. "Well, we both are. Haha. Ow. Hurts to laugh." And she was going to need a new dress. It didn't take a magic scientist to realize that a good bit of the back half of her dress was missing, only one shoulder strap still keeping it up. She adjusted it unconsciously, realizing immediately after beginning to do so that OW YUP IT STILL HURT.
The battered girl was too busy staring at the lizard thing - wyvern, Hal had said, whatever that was - to actually care. "Friend of yours?" Whether it was a name or a species, wyvern just sounded cool. This one certainly looked the part.

" No... I...I'm fine, I don't. Need you to protect. Me, I'm. the boy..." Hal said in a monotone mumble. Painfully Hal started to walk towards the wing beast as it landed and tore at the chest of the zombie. Some of the town folk were panic, first the zombie attack and now a wild wyvern. Hal stretched his left hand out towards it, placing his hand on it's back and started to rub downwards. The beast was still in full combat mode, quickly raising it's wings it had knocked Hal to the ground as it jumped flapping then made a landing pinning his arms to the ground by his shoulders. As it gripped Hal screamed in pain, it had grabbed his wound in it's talons. It heard the boy's painful squeal, it sounded human, something about him interested the wyvern. Cocking it's head to the right while backing up a few steps then it shot it's head towards Hal. " This is the end. I survived those things to become become wyvern chow." It had stopped a few inches from his neck and sniffed? It did that for a few seconds before nuzzling it's head into his chest. Hal looked at the beast curiously and noticed what had been a scar going down next to it's right eye. Was this the same one he had saved almost eight years ago? As this strange even was taking place a guard took the pig that was tied up and ushered it to the wyvern. " Take it beast. You earned a meal today." The wyvern quickly snatched up the scared animal in it's talons and took flight towards the mountains. The guard walked over to Hal and extended his arm to help him up as a couple of ladies made their way to Elesia. " I don't know who you are kid, but with the two of you we wouldn't have made it past today. Let us fix you two up." Hal took his arm and was pulled up, he wanted to say thanks but he didn't have the energy to talk hell he even need the guard to help him walk toward the building and into a bed. Elesia didn't actually remember what had happened next, she was gradually coming to realize. There was something about being dragged off, she vaguely remembered panicking and trying to bite someone, but the next thing she could remember was waking up in a very comfortable bed, drenched in the brilliant rays of the sun. Or possibly acid. It looked like sunlight but everything hurt so much that she was unconvinced. Oh, right. Dead people, talons, ripping back open, and then the punching and the headbutting and she had totally exploded a zombie's face.
Smiling knowingly to herself - none of these plebeian fools knew her dark secret, but she would be able to go to her deathbed knowing that she had been THAT AWESOME - Elesia pulled herself up from bed. More accurately, she tried, flopping back onto the bed with a disgusted *POMF* that really didn't help the condition of her pack, and reminded her that it probably hadn't actually been more than a day or two since she had been spilling gushy bits from there. "Ow." It came out sounding very hollow, so she repeated it once or twice until it sounded properly agonized. Maybe she was overdoing it. Elesia found thinking still somewhat difficult - her head was still a bit fuzzy, mostly from having just woken up, but there was still a sore bit where the zombie had casually smacked her away.
Still, exploding zombie heads. Knowing better than to try to do it by inches, Elesia jerked herself upright in one sinuous moment, holding back any more emanation than the hissed gasp of pain as the entire suite of sensations hit her at once. She couldn't think of any words strong enough to express her thoughts on the matter, so the batted girl settled for cautiously reaching oen arm behind her back to touch one of the many offending areas; her entire body was sore, but there was the whole "torn open back" thing that she was most worried about. The experiment hurt like hell, but at least it informed her that she was no longer losing much of her body fluids, and the bone back there didn't seem to be broken. Bandages covered her back, something she belatedly realized was a constant across various, seemingly-random parts of her body. Not so random when she realized that they were the hurtiest bits, but visually they seemed arranged without rhyme or reason.
She kinda liked it that way.
"Hal?" Ugh. It hurt to even talk, but she wanted to find Hal. Needed to find him. She had to make sure he was still okay - he had gotten hurt trying to keep her safe. Sounding more like an enraged bull elephant than a delicate girl, though due significantly more to the constant cacophony of grunting and pain spikes than her actually being in any way an enraged bull elephant, she eventually managed to escape from the comfy confines of the linens, standing unsteadily as her head positively swam with pain. Stupid idea. Really stupid. She started moving anyways, aiming for the door, determined to find Hal. Even if she was wearing... not her dress. Some clothes that looked like villager stuff, she guessed, but whatever. Elesia didn't think they were actually necessary but it would be a lot more work to take them off and huntt down her dress than it would be to just leave them on, and she wouldn't get any closer to finding Hal in the meantime.
A few stammered words to the first vaguely worried-looking nondescript person she found sufficed for vague directions, and after a moment of fiddling with the door, Elesia let herself into the room where Hal was apparently staying, hoping that he was actually there. It would be sort of awkward if he had already recuperated and left the room, mostly because then she had no idea where she would find him. "Hal? You - there?"

All Hal wanted to do the past couple days was sleep, only if he had got his wish. He had no energy and was in much pain he couldn't do nothing more than lay in bed, he was barely able to get up to use the bathroom which seemed like more times than normal. He had kept his trimmers through out the first night.
Half way through the next day he was sitting on the edge of the bed staring at the ground. "I'm such a failure... Elesia is hurt because I couldn't protect her... If I never made her go to that stupid festival she wouldn't be in pa-" An elderly lady had placed her hand on Hal's shoulder to get his attention "WAHHH!" Hal's voice cracked as he jumped back. "It's okay boy, I'm not going to hurt you. I'm only here to change your bandages" "So-sorry... ma-mam.." He had shifted forward allowing the woman to change his bandages. He spent the rest of day laying in bed.
That night Hal got a few hours of sleep, when he awoke he was somewhat hungry despite not eating in over a day so he had left the room in search of food. He was munching on an apple when he heard... some... shout? from Elesia's room. "I'll be back." he mumbled to the elderly couple as he dropped the apple on the table. Entering his room he saw Elesia standing there, his face light up knowing she was up and about. He hurried over to her and threw his left arm around her neck pulling her close to him. He hoped he wasn't hurting her neck or her wound as he held her, "I'm... I'm so sorry..." tears of joy ran down his face as he spoke.

Not having heard him coming, her nose set off by the fact that the room was already full of his scent, Elesia had very little time to plan a coherent reaction before Hal was upon her. Not that she would have been able to come up with a particularly good one even given extra time - or that the plan would have survived contact with the enemy. That enemy being pain when he grabbed her; a sharp intake of breath that blrured her vision and left everything a harsh white for a moment. It was hard to focus on that, though, knowing that Hal was at least okay. Better than her, apparently, which she could deal with; much better than worse than her. The tinge of pain dissipating, Elesia tentatively encircled him with one arm, then abruptly grabbed him in a full-on bear hug, too relieved to worry about the pain. Not that that stopped it from hurting too.
"Ow. Hi. Watch the back." She was smiling, not that he would be able to see it, her voice scratchy and hoarse from disuse and whatever the hell had gotten into her lungs. The smell of the zombies was still strong, but much better than it had been during the fight, now entwined with countless harsh smells from what she suspected were attempts to clean it. The blood smell was still there, but it was as much in both of their bandages as anywhere else, and it was light too. That she could hear human activity meant that the zombies were gone... probably. "I'm - glad you're okay. I was worried." Heartfelt and quiet, an admission that she couldn't phrase any more eloquently. Her first friend around her age, and he'd almost died trying to keep her alive
-And he was apologizing. For what? Elesia was somewhat confused - she had been the one to insist they stay in the fight until the end. "No, I'm s-sorry. If I hadn't made us stay, you might not have gotten h-hurt as much." It still amazed her how tough they had been. The zombies, not the two of them. Maybe it had been something... magic-ey? Resistance to magic in general, or Anima specifically? Maybe fire. She would have to experiment a bit if any of the corpses were still around. "We won, though. Protected people. And each other. That feels good."
It took a little longer for her to realize that her instinctive fight-or-flight reflexes hadn't kicked in the instant Hal had assaulted her, which seemed odd. It wasn't that she was incapable of thinking of him as a threat, after seeing what he'd done to the zombies with his spear, so much as difficulty considering him a threat to her. Curious. "How long have I been asleep?"

Hal could feel his back pop the moment Elesia had hugged him. The grip she had on him proved she was strong, at least for a girl. "Sorry" Hal quickly said when she told him to watch the back. He felt like an idiot, she did get hurt and he nearly tackled her upon seeing her awake. "It's going to take more than just a scratch to stop me." Hal gave a light laugh, he knew his injury was anything but 'just a scratch' but he hoped to make her feel better.
It just struck Hal that he knew this girl for a little over 48 hours but he cared so much about her. What made her any different than Karen, or that one girl he had met shortly before her, or even that Soul girl? Was it because she offered to help him without seeking anything in return? Or was it because he could sense she needed him for something? "I'm sorry because I made you go. I'm sorry because I ran off after telling you I'd protect you then you were hurt trying to help me. You have nothing to be sorry about. You didn't make me stay, I chose to stay."
Hal was jealous that she was able to sleep, he wanted to do that so bad but only got a few hours of it. Hal had been holding onto Elesia this whole time, even with his shoulder throbbing in pain it just felt right to hold onto her for now. "I'm... I don't know. The last thing I can remember was walking towards the wyvern, then I was looking up at it's fangs, after that I was being bandaged up. I... I think... They said you passed out shortly afterward... I was awake for over a day and a half after it happened, but I wasn't coherent for most of it. At least that's what I was told. But I did get a few hours of sleep. I... think it's been... two days?"
Hal just remembered he was in the middle of eating an apple, in the excitement of Elesia being up he forgot his hunger. "Oh, you must be starving. Want to get something to eat? I'm sure the lady wouldn't mind cooking for you."

Chose to stay.
Elesia pondered that for a moment. Just a couple words, but there was a momentous weight to them. Not just in how Hal specifically said it, but the truth in why she had stayed: she had chosen to stay as well. It hadn't exactly been a coherent, explicit decision, but there had been no doubt in her mind at the time that this was where she needed to be. She felt actively dumber for having said what she did a few moments ago; her words had denigrated Hal's free will, belittled his choice to stay. ...Social stuff was hard.
She smiled again, not particularly worried about the fact that she was smiling into his shoulder where he wouldn't be able to see it, and tried to force the strengh of conviction into her voice that she could feel, but only poorly articulate. "We both chose to stay. I'm sorry for saying that I made you stay... you were brave. I wasn't, but I couldn't leave those people, or you, so I chose to stay too. And it worked out, I think. We're both alive, and a lot more people are okay because of us than there would have been if we hadn't done that. I can bear a little pain knowing that."
It felt kind of good, she realized. Not the pain - the saving people part. Elesia wasn't quite delirious enough to think of herself as a hero, but it felt good to pretend to be one, and they had helped people. "I w-wouldn't mind doing it again," she admitted hesitantly, her voice small, but possessed of a happy warmth to it. "Uh, without the almost dying part, I think. That wasn't as much fun." An awkward attempt at a joke, but Elesia was determined to try to act as normal as she could, to push herself beyond her boundaries, even if it came out sounding incredibly forced and stupid. "...Food sounds really good. I don't actually remember the last, um, two days, I guess. I kinda recall seeing and hearing some things, but none of them are connected to each other."

For the first time since Hal ran away from home he spoke in a scolding tone. "Don't say you weren't brave. You saved my life. When we made our final stand I couldn't keep up with anything, at first those things moved slowly but then I couldn't keep up with their movement. When I fell and barely got my lance up to slow that one I thought I was done for, and I would have if you weren't there." his tone had shifted to a happier one "Thank you Elesia. OH! While we eat Hubert can tell you about how I touched the wyvern before it knocked me down."
Hal sounded like a little girl that got a new dollie when he spoke about the wyvern. He let go of Elesia and turned towards the room he was just in.

Elesia cringed at the harshness in his voice, not liking it directed at her, but she couldn't understand what he was saying. Bravery was - nothing like what she had done. Bravery was the people in books, strong and smart and handsome and courageous, able to forge onwards no matter what. Never afraid, never backed down, never gave up. She had been scared out of her mind, done a terrible job of keeping Hal safe, and nearly gotten herself killed in the process - and Elesia didn't need to look outside to still see how many people were dead because she hadn't been strong enough. She had just been too stubborn to run and too dumb to figure out a better approach, and it had worked out this time, but that was it.
-But Hal seemed convinced of it, so she mutely nodded, not able to face him and argue the point. Maybe later. For now, she was goddamn hungry. "Food sounds... really good." Extracting herself from Hal's grip as he released her, she paused for a moment to rub her side, adjusting the unfamiliar shirt before following along behind him, bare feet barely audibly pattering on the floor. Any semblance of shyness and ladylike manners went out the window as soon as they reached a room with a familiar scent to it, warmth and grain mixed with a husky stench of meat that threatened to cloud her mind with delirious pleasure. "FOOD."
Darting past someone who was not food before they had time to react, Elesia grabbed what she recognized as bread off of the nearest plate, tearing into it with relish. It tasted so good! It took several more bites before she remembered that there were people in the room, namely Hal and some woman she didn't recognize, and the latter was staring at her with equal parts amusement and surprise. ...Was the food supposed to be someone else's?
Elesia finished off the bread anyways, regaling the woman with the brightest, most innocent smile she could muster. There was only one way to solve this, short of fire.
"Hi!"

"Why hello sweetie, it's nice to see you up finally. Hal had been worried the whole time about you. If you would like me to make something just tell me and I'll see what I can do."
Hal chuckled at the sight returning to the seat he was in moments ago and returned to the apple. It seemed Elesia didn't lose her apatite and it looks like she'd eat for the both of them. Hal tried to lighten the mood "Oh man Elesia, if you fought like you went for that food I think those things would of ran away." He wasn't sure if those things knew what fear was... Or anything really. He just hopes he doesn't have to deal the damned things again.
Once the two were better Hal wanted to find something that wasn't... old people attire. He felt at least 20 years older just wearing it, well in combination to his shoulder throbbing in pain from time to time and his whole body was sore still. He figured Elesia felt the same, but he didn't want to beg for money. Why couldn't this happen a day or two later, he would have at least got his paycheck and kept some of it.

"Food!" The word came out long before her brain had time to consider the phrasing or precise meaning, but it was inordinately accurate. At that point in time, Elesia was less worried about getting a steak or buttered toast so much as devouring everything - and everyone, if necessary - in sight, but after a few moments she realized that maybe she could be a little more specific. Not that she really knew what she wanted. "Um. More of this!" She would have held the bread out had it... not already been gone. WHOOPS. "Bread! And meat. Either. Both. Definitely both! I'm really hungry." At this point it was hard to stand still; the thought of so much delicious food was overwhelming. "Lots of it!"
Then Hal's words registered in her addled brain, and she turned to him, suspicious, ready to retort - and then her brain turned back on. What had been about to be a scathing denunciation, or at least as close as she could get while so excited, evaporated in favor of remembering the creatures. "...Why were they here? They didn't eat anyone, just hurt them, but they seemed kinda focused to be showing up just 'cuz." Not exactly the most coherent and technical description of the zombies' behavior, but Elesia was definitely suspicious, plopping down in a nearby chair while nonchalantly grabbing for some sort of fruit. "I mean if they were hungry, wouldn't they have been looking for food? People or stuff, I dunno what they eat, but they were too busy to go with that. But they didn't seem super smart, and I don't think I have an evil rival who can summon dead people. Yet."
Yes, she had planned this out way too much. Elesia pitied the boring people who hadn't already decided what their archnemesis was going to be like. Turning back to Hal, the existence of everyone and everything else forgotten, she cocked her head and adopted a more inquisitive tone. "So whatcha think they were looking for, and did they find it?"

The elderly lady had started to prepare something for Elesia. Hal was looking at the table, almost as if he was in a trance. Hubert had told Hal that the wyvern nuzzled it's head into his chest before flying off. Hal thinks he remembers that or dreamed it, but either case he remembers seeing the scar along it's eye like the one he saved years ago. Why was he here fighting zombies? He didn't think wyverns lived in Lycia, maybe things back in Bern drove it here in search of food. From what he saw here it would be on top of the food chain, maybe that's why it was here.
The woman had smiled and laughed at Elesia's comment, Hal had missed it. "You know my sister had told me she heard stories about those things appearing at Ostia a few years back." Hal shook his head, coming back to reality. "I.... I think I'm just going to lay down for a bit." "Everything okay honey?" Hal sat there for a second and shook his head. "Oh, yes. Just feeling a bit tired I guess." Hal gave Elesia a warm smile as he went back to the room he was in and laid on the bed.
"Is there anywhere that's truly safe if those monsters are common? What created them? And most importanly, I need to get stronger if I'm to protect Elesia from them."
