Name: Devorah of Tribe Keskarvio
Class: Brigand
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Blue
Age: 20
Appearance: Devorah stands at about 5 foot 8 inches, with mahogany hair that flows down the length of her back, and tanned skin from her long years under the Sacaen sun. She is extremely fit, and over much of Devorah’s body are brown-reddish tattoos, a distinct marker for people of her tribe. The most visible tattoo Devorah has is on her face. It starts at the temple and ends at her jaw; she received it after completing her training. She values it the most out of all of her tribal markings, as it represents the family she was born into. Others on her arms, chest, abdomen, and legs denote achievements or rituals she has participated in or serve as reminders of loss.
Clothes: While most Keskarvian women dress plainly in long colored smocks, Devorah’s style of dress falls in line with the warriors of the tribe, which means she wears as little as she can to facilitate a wide range of movement. A simple red halter covers her to the middle of her torso, leaving much of her toned stomach exposed. Two leather bracers cover her forearms, and two ornamental leather bands adorn her biceps. She wears a fur tufted leather sash diagonally across her chest, its purpose being to hold two knives for hunting and a few pouches for small items. On her waist rests another belt, which has a loop for holding her axe. Her short skirt is split on both sides all the way to the hip, and she wears a set of knee-high leather boots. When winter comes she wears a long-sleeved shirt and leggings underneath her normal accoutrements, and for traveling, she has a red hooded cloak that shields her from unpredictable weather.
Born in: Sacae
Story: Devorah was born and raised on the Sacaen Plains amongst the nomadic tribe, Keskarvio. Made up of roughly 250 people traveling in two main camps (the main camp and the warrior camp), the Keskarvians being a proud warrior people, the tribe held a custom that the first-born boy of every family would train to become a warrior. In the case that a male was not born by the first born girl’s fifteenth birthday, the girl would train in pace of the male. While every family obviously hoped for a first born male, Devorah’s mother, who had been married in from another tribe, and father, who was a notable Keskarvian warrior, hadn’t been able to produce a boy before Devorah came of age, instead having two more girls.
Until that time came, however, Devorah lived a fairly normal child’s life in her tribe. She was primarily raised by her mother, who taught her and her two sisters about the rituals and legends of tribe Keskarvio. Devorah’s mother also passed on knowledge of cleaning and homemaking to Devorah’s sisters, while she taught Devorah what she knew about apothecary, knowing it would be more useful to her in the future. While Devorah felt left out when her mother was teaching her sisters, she loved her private lessons from her mother, also quickly falling in love with myriad of things that her mother imparted on her about the intricacies of the plants and herbs found in the plains.
When she wasn’t learning from or helping her mother, Devorah loved playing games with the other children in the tribe, but she often butted heads with some of the boys who would sometimes make fun of her for being overly stubborn and headstrong. As a result, Devorah has a big anger problem. Her hot-headedness frequently getting her into fights with the other children. While Devorah’s rowdiness often warranted scolding from her parents, fights went largely unpunished as the parents and elders of the tribe simply saw them as the children dealing with the pent-up aggression innate in every Keskarvian.
When Devorah finally came of age to begin her path to becoming a warrior, she left the main tribe to begin her five years of training with the warrior tribe. Made up of 15-20 year old trainees and a few unmarried, experienced warriors who decide to dedicate their time to training new warriors, the first year and a half of training consisted of the kids simply training in hand-to-hand combat. While challenging, this process was considered the easier part of training, as well as the time that the trainees begin to create bonds with other warriors. During her unarmed training, Devorah made a few friends, though most notable was a fellow female trainee named Lenai who Devorah constantly confided in.
Once she completed her unarmed combat training, Devorah began her transition to weapon training. Before she could, however, she had to find a weapon that she was naturally attuned to. Being a girl, she was steered towards archery and swordsmanship, but Devorah fell in love with using an axe. While nearly being too heavy for her, Devorah was determined to train and fight with the more unwieldy weapon, spending all of her free-time strengthening herself enough to properly wield it. Eventually she was able to convince her trainers that she could handle her axe, and she continued through her training with little incident.
While training was very structured, free time could be spent doing virtually whatever the trainees wanted to. As a result, most would challenge one another to tests of strength and skill, as well as create rivalries that would exist through most, if not all of training. For Devorah, her rivalry was with a boy named Maarten, who seemed determined to crush her spirits of becoming a skilled axe wielder. In their free time he would constantly pester Devorah, calling her a myriad of insults and trying to push her around. The hot-headed Devorah couldn’t stand it, though her friend Lenai would always encourage her to ignore him and focus on her training. While Devorah and Maarten would get into spiffs, only once had their rivalry devolved into an actual fist fight, and the fight was broken up no more than moments after it had started.
While challenging and exhausting, Devorah’s at the warrior camp came to the close, and after the warrior camp convened with the main camp for their yearly month-long meeting, she finally received her long-awaited familial facial tattoo. Then, after spending a short time with her mother and father and visiting her sister’s new families, Devorah set off on her tribe’s customary three year long pilgrimage so that she might complete her training and become a warrior of the Keskarvio tribe.
