Aella cautiously moved through one of the many ports located throughout the Isles. Honestly, who knew a pirate would get so worked up when you try a new acupuncture technique on them. Aella stiffled a giggle as she peered around the corner. Everyone was either busy drinking or getting ready to depart. Calmly striding out from the alleyway, Aella continued her search for an apothecary. Honestly, did these pirates lack any source of healing? What an uncouth group of ruffians! No wonder everyone hated them.
As she continued her wanderings, Aella could help but stare at all the different types of people. Most were men of all ages and sizes. There were some women of which almost all seemed vicious. There was yelling and cursing. Wild parties of debauchery seemed to flow from every building. The Western Isles was probably not the best place for a cleric to be alone, but Aella didn't really seem to care. Dodging drunken pirates as she weaved through the buildings, she continued her search but to no avail. Perhaps another Isle would be more productive.
Apparently, the sailors who had escorted her here were the only source of decency for miles around. Still, Aella had paid good money for this opportunity, and she was not to be denied! She would learn every healing technique and medicine that ever existed! With a more upbeat attitude, Aella turned the corner and ran right into the very pirate she was hoping to avoid. Of course! Once she was happy again, this lump would turn up to sour her mood. Needless to say, both were surprised with the turn of events. Aella was the first to react though, and a swift kick to the nuts gave her enough time to get some distance as she ran away once more.

Karen sighed. It wasn't often that she'd get assigned to shadowing and guard duty over a Cleric, but every now and then, it happened. Truth be told, she often didn't mind their company either. But when they insist on going through the dark alleys of a lawless town like this? Then Karen felt a twinge of annoyance. Still, even as she kicked the unconscious pirate that Aella wasn't aware of, she felt this could have gone worse. At this rate though, perhaps she should just reveal herself, utilize her usual cover of a traveling Acolyte, and so on.
She peeked out to see where Aella was going and- Another alley? Really, woman?
Karen moved swiftly and silently, starting to round the corner herself as Aella barreled out and right into her. "Gah!" Karen probably could have avoided it, but now was one of those times when you just rolled with the "punch" of the situation. Still, she managed to stay standing for the most part, but now with a blue haired Cleric smashed into her. "W-What's wrong? Are you okay?" The Acolyte feigned surprise, her face and voice rather convincing.

"Mmmf!" Aella exclaimed as she smashed into the new person. Shaking her head as she backed up, Aella gasped for air. "Pirate... chasing... me..." she wheezed. She was in terrible shape for sprinting. And the robes certainly didn't help the matter. Bent over double, she desperately gulped air. "Gotta... help... me..." she managed to get out before she started hyperventilating. Panicking just a little, Aella clawed at the sash around her neck, desperately trying to pull it toward her mouth. Breathing deeply into the cloth, she managed to stop herself from hyperventilating. Perhaps some cardio was in order for later.
Regaining her composure, Aella assessed the woman in front of her. "Are you an Etrurian?" was all she could think of saying. The woman looked like an acolyte, but the body Aella had collided with certainly didn't feel like one. Aella knew the human body, and this woman's was strong. The fact that she had been able to keep both Aella and herself standing after the collision attested to that. Plus, the body beneath the flowing robes was definitely layers of muscle. Very unusual for a magic user. Aella herself was thin to an extreme. Which was normal or the person would be exorbitantly fat. But not this woman. "Who are y-, nevermind. We can figure that out later." Aella ducked behind the woman. "There is a nasty brute trying to catch me. We can either run, or you blast him. Doesn't matter to me." It really didn't matter. Aella could always fix the pirate if this acolyte went too far anyway.

Karen listened carefully as she was trained to do, even with the Cleric's heavy breathing. A pirate trying to capture her. That's... great. She leaned her head to the side, spotting the man she was talking about. He was currently quite busy cradling his rather sore unmentionables and on a knee, gasping in pain. It'd certainly be the better idea to just go ahead and run now rather than do anything unnecessary. She turned and grasped the other woman's arm before starting to pull her along, her strength rather clear again despite her appearance.
"Yes, I'm an Etrurian, but that's not important right now."
Karen guided her through the crowded streets quickly, careful to maintain a hold and not move too fast. Yet, the Acolyte's true profession being what it was, it meant her pace was still rather fast in general. Eventually she pulled the Cleric into an inn, one of the more reputable ones on the Isle. After getting inside, she took a breathe and relaxed before letting Aella go.
"There. I'm sure we've lost him." She looked back at the other blunette as she spoke.

Aella felt as though she was being whipped back and forth as the strange acolyte dragged her through the crowd. Good grief this woman could move quickly! Aella felt as though her arm was about to be ripped off. Fortunately, they soon stopped in a respectable enough inn. With a sigh of relief, Aella tried to get her feet back under her. With all the running, her legs felt like jelly. Bending at the waist, she tried to stretch her legs out. Unfortunately, her bag of supplies swung off her shoulder and threw off her already weak balance. The floor was kindly there to meet her face.
"Ow," she complained as she pushed herself back up. Rubbing her sore face with one hand, Aella waved the other hand holding her staff dismissively in the direction of the acolyte. "I'm fine," she winced. Relaxing a little bit, Aella dropped her free hand to her hip. "So is this where you are staying?" she inquired. It was probably the best inn on the whole Isles. Then again, Aella hadn't exactly been able to explore things very well. Everything had spiraled out of control almost immediately after her arrival. But now there was another Etrurian here! "Should... should we, like, sit down and talk?" Aella wasn't the greatest with others. She usually spent more time with textbooks and herbs. Smoothing her hair down, she smiled warmly at her new companion.

"So is this where you are staying?"
Karen nodded, sighing a bit again. "Yes, that's right."
"Should... should we, like, sit down and talk?"
"Yeah. Let's get a table in the dining room and maybe something to eat as well." Karen rubbed the back of her head. Hopefully there wouldn't be any more near-fiascos like that, eh? She lead the younger woman into the dining room, several other people there already enjoying the food. After getting seated, she looked over to Aella.
"I guess I'll let you start first while we're waiting on the service."

Aella settled into the booth. It felt good to get off her feet. Putting her bag on the inside, she leaned back and took a deep breath. "I start? Okay, well, I'm here on unofficial business. Simply put, I'm here to learn whatever I can about these pirates' healing methods. What herbs, salves and techniques they use. If they have disease prevention methods for long times out at sea. Basically anything that I can use to improve my craft." She was starting to get very excited. "I also want to try out some of the new things I've learned on my travels. There is some really neat bone-resetting techniques I found in some library in the boonies! Castles are awesome places too! All those dusty tomes have such interesting thoughts on medicine. Did you know they thought a horses blood would make people run faster? I mean, c'mon, that's a little far fetched." Her voice was starting to reach a fever pitch. Aella was in the throws of her craft, fantasizing about all the different ways to dress wounds and eliminate poisons. It was enough to make a girl swoon. In fact, people were beginning to stare. "Can you believe how far medicine has come in just the last one hundred years? It's amazing how many things we can do, even without healing staves! And, and...," Aella looked around the room. "I'm probably boring you," she lowered her voice, thoroughly chagrined. She had seen the disapproving looks on the other patron's faces. She sank back into the seat she hadn't even realized she had stood up from.
"So," she blew a strand of hair out of her eye, "what brings you way out here?"

Well, Karen had certainly been briefed on the Cleric's pursuits for coming out this way, but to hear her talk about it herself was a whole other experience. She grew excited, intense even, and was soon enough standing up on the chair speaking of medical knowledge and theory. In truth, Karen was a bit touched herself. She knew a few tricks of her own when it came to taking care of field injuries, but this woman was just something else.
"I'm probably boring you," The Cleric's voice lowered after looking around and seeing the odd glances of other patrons. Though, if Karen was truthful, it was actually rather interesting. She didn't have as much of a love for medicine as the other woman, she had to admit that Aella's enthusiasm was rather infectious.
"Why not at all, I'd love to hear more sometime."
She had to admit, the way Aella blew a strand of hair out of the way was also rather cute.
"Well, I'm traveling to spread the word of Elimine to all who'd hear it. Admittedly, I think the Western Isles are quite the intimidating place for it though. Pirates abound and not always in the mood to listen per say." She paused. "Ah, come to think of it, I suppose I haven't introduced myself yet. I'm Karen. And yourself?"

Aella sighed happily when the acolyte desired to hear more about medicine. The only thing she enjoyed as much as practicing her arts was talking about them. And of course, in all the excitement, Aella completely forgot about introductions. "Karen? I'm Aella." She bowed her head toward the messenger of St. Elimine. Aella certainly wasn't one for all that devotion and church life; however, she did enjoy the perks of being from Etruria. And she was certainly thankful for the wide ranging reach of the Church. And so, she would give respect where it was due. "So, you're here on a missionary trip? Must be tough being the only one amongst all these ruffians. Unless there are more of you nearby." Aella scanned the area but didn't see any other robes of the church. Karen was a little suspicious, but as long as she would help and not interfere with Aella's mission, it really didn't matter.
"Karen, would you mind sharing some teachings of the Saint with me? It has been a terribly long time since I've been in contact with a member of the clergy." Aella was curious if there were any differences between the teachings of the devoted. After all, each person has his own perspective. Aella knew that not every doctor would do things exactly the same for every injury. She wanted to see how that translated into the realm of religion. After all, she had already shared her passion. This acolyte had to be interested in nothing but the Saint, right?

"Ah, quite so. Indeed, I am the only one here, but I certainly don't have a problem protecting myself either. Are you traveling alone as well? Perhaps we can travel together?"
"Karen, would you mind sharing some teachings of the Saint with me? It has been a terribly long time since I've been in contact with a member of the clergy."
Karen hummed in thought for a moment. "Well, what would you like to know? I admit, my interpretations are perhaps a bit more loose than some of the more strict teachings of late." That latter part was a subject she tended to shy away from. The teachings of late were... No, she didn't want to think about that right now.

Aella let out a quiet squeal. "Iiee, you want to travel together?! It's been ages since I've had someone with me. This is so exciting!" It probably hadn't been that long, but she was so absorbed in the possibilities of exploring medicines with her new friend that should could hardly remember the past. As far as she knew, Aella had been travelling alone for at least a week. And a week was a long time with all the researching and experimenting she did.
"Well, what would you like to know? I admit, my interpretations are perhaps a bit more loose than some of the more strict teachings of late."
"Um, anything is fine really. I know! Tell me some of her first teachings. It's been absolutely ages since I heard those back at the monastery." The original Church was much more interesting than the new, expanding one. Honestly, Aella was a little concerned with some of the violent means she had heard about recently. Leaning forward expectantly, she waited for the acolyte's message.

"Iiee, you want to travel together?! It's been ages since I've had someone with me. This is so exciting!"
"Certainly! It's been quite awhile since I've had someone else to travel with as well!" Well, in a manner of speaking. She hadn't actually had company to speak with though, that was true. The week had been rather... well, boring because of that. It was part of why she didn't like the jobs where she was required to shadow another. Granted, when it was shadowing and providing protection for a Cleric such as Aella, she didn't mind it that much.
"Um, anything is fine really. I know! Tell me some of her first teachings. It's been absolutely ages since I heard those back at the monastery."
Karen hummed in thought for a moment, recalling some of the more recent preachings. "Of old, her words primarily spoke of love for our fellows, forgiveness of their actions, and peace in our interactions with them." She paused. "More recently, her words via the Prophet speak to us of a need to cleanse the sins of the world. Etrurians have a duty to themselves and all of Elibe to bring serenity to all of us. We must strive to cleanse sin where we find it and bring the light of Elimine to all."

We must strive to cleanse sin where we find it and bring the light of Elimine to all." That Prophet, always seeming to stir up trouble. Aella couldn't understand why some would go so far during "cleansing." As a healer, she knew plenty about cleansing. She could cleanse wounds, cleanse minds, even cleanse bowels. What the church did though, was cleanse the spirit. And that was something Aella couldn't do. And it didn't seem to be something within her grasp. At least not yet.
"If you don't mind me asking, how do you cleanse the sin? Is there some ritual that you do, or some rite to perform for the lost?" Aella suspected this was what led to some of the purgings she had heard whispers about. Unfortunately, as someone completely devoted to helping others, her mind simply could not fathom why someone would kill another. Aella was ready to incapacitate, but she tried to make sure even her enemies would be in 100% condition upon waking up. Granted, life was not always that kind, and during her final weeks at the monastery she had seen a few people die, some in worse ways than others. When she had caused injury to people through her mistakes, they obviously wouldn't be at 100% as she was driven away. Those instances simply reinforced her resolve though. She would become the greatest healer. Even better than St. Elimine herself. Of course, she would never admit such blaspheme to the acolyte before her.

"If you don't mind me asking, how do you cleanse the sin? Is there some ritual that you do, or some rite to perform for the lost?"
"Ah, yes. That's right." She closed her eyes and made gestures with her hands, moving her arms as well, in demonstration. She mutters something as well, what sounds like a prayer to St. Elimine for the salvation of an unfortunate sinner. She stopped after a moment, bringing her hands together and whispering a final "Amen". "A prayer for the sinner, for them to be cleansed of their sins upon Elibe and to ascend to heaves, pure and blessed." She paused, there was a bit of a regretful tone in her words though. "It... Is the only way, according to the Church." Her voice contained a certain amount of conviction, but her expression was slightly more on the troubled sigh.

For a moment, Aella just stared at Karen. Did- did she make that sound like the person was already dead? She sure did. There was a slight shake in her voice. "Well, that's- that's really something. How about we get some food or something?" she laughed nervously. She didn't know why, but it seemed like Karen had a troubled past. And all of Aella's thoughts about death certainly weren't helping things.
Despite suggesting the food, Aella did nothing to get anyone's attention. She simply sat there thinking. Why would anyone have to die? Could their sins be so bad, they could be cleansed only after death? It wasn't right. Life was the last bastion that Aella would defend with all her ability. She had to show this to Karen. And she knew just how to do it. Immediately, she jumped out of the booth and grabbed Karen's hand. "Follow me." The cleric dragging the acolyte was not as fast as the other way around. Once back outside, she gestured to the port. "Tell me what you see here." There were people loading ships, yelling, drinking, and fighting. A generally cacophony that seemed to come hand in hand with the Isles. "Who are these people to you?"
