"Right, then. Greenhouse or no, it's time I started learning. At least there's some sun still, and fairly low wind. That'll keep the chill down.
So... Um... I don't want to start off too hard, because I know nothing of melee combat, so... Is there a way I can find out which one of you guys would be easier to fight? I don't want either of you to hold back, but if I'd be completely outclassed, I see no sense in fighting. I'd do more running than casting."
The pupil meanwhile had started stretching and warming himself up as he spoke. When his opponent was ready, he would be too. Maybe they'd fight to see who was better? Or maybe it was easier than that. Baako and Vincent. Hm. Well, they didn't seem like they knew each other, so it might be hard to tell who was the better swordsman. Meh. Might as well let them sort that out and focus on getting ready.

Vincent grinned at Baako. "Well, we need to warm up too and it's been a long time since we last fought. What do you say? You up for it now? I'd like to see how you've trained." Not actually waiting for an answer Vincent drew his blade and readied to fight. He had traveled the plains of Sacae since they last met and it took a long while. He had improved and Baako didn't seem the type to take a loss lying down.

Baako was going to say it would be good training for all of them if the swordsmen started out a good deal father away. That way he could practice closing in on long range fighters and the magic user could work on aim and avoidance, but all that went out the window when the chance for another duel came up.
"Let's go!" Baako had been around a little more now, his skill had only increased since last time and there was no way he was gonig to go making another mistake like last time. Patience was learned, and Baako had that lesson under his belt. He'd let Vincent make the first move.

Vincent's blood boiled. It was his first match since earning Phoenix Heart and the blade had yet to accept him as its wielder. "Let's go!" Vincent charged in and nimbly leapt to the side of Baako and swung his iron sword aiming at his waist.

It looked like Vincent learned a bit of finesses since the last fight, or maybe he just didn't need to show it last time. Either way Baako was no slouch, rather than block Baako went backed off to avoid the blow before lashing out with his own sword from the right hoping that the metal blade would cleave into the exposed arm of his opponent.

Vincent wondered how Baako had grown so much faster than last time but he wasn't going to let that stop him. As Baako came to attack his side Vincent let his swing follow through in a spin letting Baako's blade strike his back into Phoenix Heart. It saved him but the blow was enough to knock him stumbling forward. He quickly turned and took a stance readying to fight some more. Baako's speed let him hold the fighting's pace but if he could manage it he could steal into it like last time.

Maybe the sound of metal on metal told the tale and Baako pondered his next move. He was still faster, but he had no doubt the old swordsman was still stronger. When he was sent stumbling Baako pursued, his sword once again lashing out with wild thrusts at his midsection both to keep him off balance and keep the young fighter from getting to close. It was best to play it safe

Vincent wasn't afforded a chance to rest, Baako was fighting fiercely. Having only just entered his stance Vincent lept aside his cape taking the stab instead. As he moved he brought a sloppy strike down from above before leaping back.

What on earth? They had apparently fought each other before, and without any time for him to get a word in, they'd gone at each other's throats, pouring all of their energy into this warm-up duel. Well, now he'd have good practice hitting a moving target!
"Aeternis tenebris... Venit si te capiunt!"
Beginning in a whisper and finishing in a bold voice with remarkable intensity, Sonneillon crafted a ball of darkness and hurled it towards Baako. Maintaining his focus on the moving magic, the pupil sent it flying straight at him, its shape wobbling and sizzling like some strange lump of energy.
Smiling, the pupil slowly moved to the side, watching his opponents and his cast at all times.

Vincent saw the incoming magic and leapt further away. "That's a cheap shot!" Vincent challenged. "Hey Baako, let's call our match a draw for now and get him taken care of. I'm feeling pretty warm now." Vincent would never admit it but if they had continued he was certain he would have lost this round and thought this a prime opportunity to save his record.
Vincent took into consideration the distance between himself and Gressil before charging in. He would have to trust Baako not to take a shot at him and watch for exploding balls of energy. Should be a piece of cake he told himself as a way of self motivation.

"Aeternis tenebris, circumda tibi nectens tuum sit."
The same sort of dark energy burst into existence from the pupil's hands, but instead of a ball soaring at the charging attacker, it simply flopped into the earth and disappeared. Sonneillon's face stayed calm and collected as the boy drew nearer, and suddenly, he muttered something and tendrils of shadow erupted from the earth, flailing at Vincent's legs and trying to bring the boy into a trip. If they connected, they'd feel strange. Hard and cold, but formless. They would almost feel like being grabbed by a freezing hand and yanked downward.
It was easier for Sonneillon to cast these spells, since he didn't have to put as much force behind them. After all, he was sparring, not trying to kill them. But it was still tiring. He'd have to try and bring them down or at least keep them at bay so that he didn't exhaust himself.

Vincent charged raising his iron sword to eye level. It was a stance he'd learned from watching myrmidons but suddenly icey hands wrapped around his legs and he fell fat to the ground smacking his face in the dirt and losing his sword. "Ahh! Dang it all! What was that!?" Vincent looked in time to see the tendrils fade away. "So you have other tricks up your sleeve then? Alright." Vincent saw his iron sword several feet ahead but decided to give Phoenix Heart another try. Grabbing the hilt he could feel the surge of power and the phoenix crest burn into his hand, but then as it had before it pulsated in rejection and numbed his arm. "AHH!!!" It hurt.
Deciding to abandon using Phoenix Heart he dived for his sword grabbing it and stumbling to stand. He'd have to fight left handed now due to his own foolishness. "Baako, flank him from his left side!" While Gressil focused on his flanks Vincent intended to strike at his back or front instead.

"Hah. Tricks? No. Skills? Yes. I don't have many, but I do have some. Aren't they fun?"
The swordsman was grabbing the hilt of his other sword, but it seemed like it had backfired on him or something. What was really a milestone for young Neil was the fact that for only the second time in his life, he'd crafted tendrils that could grab and pull and act like arm extensions. It was second nature for Verrine, but this was a great leap for the pupil.
"Double teaming? Now that's cheap. Nevertheless, it's good practice. I'll take you both on!"
Backing up and widening his stance, the pupil started charging more dark magic, his breathing becoming a little more ragged. Casting was still quite tiring for him.
"Take this!"
The ball of darkness erupted from his hands again, huge and menacing, but then wobbled as it neared Vincent and suddenly crackled and fizzled out of existence. It had been too much for Neil to maintain safely. He'd tried pushing the limits... And found them to still be quite solid and immovable.

"Take this!" Vincent cringed as he prepared to take the blow from Gresill's orb when it shattered before his eyes. "Here goes!" Vincent cried lunging forward with a mighty thrust. This was going to be his match again. He felt a moments pride but his opponent had worn himself out; not much of a triumph. Then again it was his first exposure to actually fighting magic.

"No. I will not give up. I will not lose. I -- AH!"
There was an enormous bang, louder than anything Sonneillon had heard before, and a shock wave of darkness seemed to force its way out of him, shooting out and slamming into both swordsmen and no doubt sending them flying. Suddenly, the pupil crumpled into a heap, his mouth moving even as his body lay limp.
"Discipulus auctorem passionem crucis Redemptionem in regnum immergunt Obstinata mente divina vincula Da locum ignis pastor."
What on earth had happened to him?
