Name: Zangan
Magic: Anima
Tome: Volcanon
Physical Description: This massive weapon is always hot to the touch, brimming with desire to burn brightly. A giant axe formed of what would appear to be solid stone, with veins of magma running through its blade. The blade of the axe becomes searing hot at the command of its wielder, and can render even the thickest armor as weak as paper from the extraordinary heat. Wounds from this weapon tend not to bleed, due to the sweltering nature of its power. The weapon is simple in design, forgoing impressive design for peerless function. It weighs far more than any mundane weapon, and only the strongest of fighters can even wield it. That is, unless the axe itself decides to assist.
Personality: As much as people associate fire with destruction, Zangan is not a violent spirit. Zangan is the spirit of passion. His nature is that everything attempted must be done with all of ones heart, be it fighting or simply constructing something. Dedication, determination and perseverance are the traits he cherishes in his wielders.
Zangan's powers are mostly confined to the axe, believing that combat should be close and personal. Any ranged attack requires the weapon to strike the earth. This action, if the wielder is in tune with the spirit, will cause a massive fissure to split the earth from the point of contact, conjuring forth a massive torrent of magma. The heat of such an attack is enough to melt flesh from bone, and even being near to it can be fatal from the raw heat it gives off. The axe will protect its wielder from the initial spray, focusing it away from them, but provides no additional protection for him and his allies. After the attack, the fissure will remain until the lava has suitably cooled, causing a lingering and deadly change to a battlefield. The nature of this weapon makes non lethal strikes all but impossible.
Origin: Zangan was discovered by Wyatt of Laus in a natural cavern underneath Ostia. Removing the axe from its resting place destabilized the entire region, causing a massive volcanic event. The reason for this comes some seven hundred years ago. The lava rivers running underneath Ostia were discovered quite by accident. A powerful mage of that day, by the name of Zangan, determined that the fire beneath the land was going to reach a volatile state within the decade.
Many suggested alerting the Ostian nobles, who were not aware of this situation. Zangan, however, felt that they could resolve this issue without causing such panic and destruction. In time, he succeeded in crafting a magical axe with a very rare connection to the Nether. It was designed to siphon out the power of whatever was around it. With no hesitation, Zangan planted it firmly into the magma river. The axe, made of rarest metals, worked as intended, perhaps too well.
Seeing that his invention would stave off the eruption, at least for the time being, Zangan cast a teleport spell to leave the caverns. The spirit of the axe, however, lashed out at his magic. As it did with the magma, it sensed the raw power he possessed and drew the very soul from his body. His flesh crumbled to dust in the molten caverns.
The axe retained his determination over the years. And while it was only to be a solution for a century or so, it held the volcano in check for over seven hundred years, until it was removed. It is curious to note that the axe was originally made of metal, though now it appears to be made of molten rock. Time has degraded even the stubborn Zangan, and the axe's durability has faltered because of it.
When Wyatt first pulled the axe, he could not do much with it besides calling on its cutting heat. After his injury in Bern, where he refused to give up and forced himself to recover, the weapon seems to have deemed him as the worthy successor to its secrets.
