Name: Auria
Class: Pupil (Elder)
Age: 17
Born in: Fibernia, Western Isles
Appearance: Auria is a rather delicate looking young woman, with a soft face and soft features. A dainty lithe build and a pretty face, with long azure hair that she's been growing the better part of her life. She's not too tall, and is a bit shorter than the average height of most girls her age. With a pair of deep brimstone red eyes, they stand out on her face more than most things. Some people consider red eyes a sign of bad luck, but she's never given that line of thought any clout. Generally she wears a somewhat ratty looking robe that appears to be very worn, with the obvious sign of needlework across its fabric from where it's been mended after being torn several times. It is basically her only robe she owns, and it shows. Underneath she wears what is lovingly referred to as 'peasant clothes', and while they change out from type to type and color to color, they all retain a 'cheap' sort of feel to them.
Personality: Auria is a relatively morose individual. Perhaps that isn't the best word to use, but to many she appears to be as such. She's no-nonsense and is generally serious in most situations. She has no problem being harsh or rude, but she also has no problem being kind and sweet, she tends to tailor her personality to who she's dealing with. This is due to her ambitious spirit, and a strong desire to 'climb' above her station. When it suits her, she will be a yes-man sycophant, but when it does not she falls into a more grumpy sort of persona. She has powerful passion hiding within her, but she hides it well, and as a result she seems bored at most things even when it simply is not true. This tends to rub some people the wrong way, though she is quick to 'correct' this when it hinders her. It's a bit confusing if she's naturally grump or naturally cheerful at times, and the truth is simply she's a bit of both.
She rarely cuts loose and 'has fun' for a multitude of reasons, the least of which not being that she finds it a waste of time. She doesn't hate fun, but she is of the mind that if you have time to have fun then you have time to work. That isn't to say she doesn't enjoy doing things, but she takes enjoyment and pride in her work, and it's much less likely you'd see her doing something such as attending a festival or watching a play. She has a soft spot for 'cute' things in a typical cliche style, which drives her crazy because she thinks she's better than that. She also likes money.
She's not a foul person, but she is the type to take unpopular choices. While there is definitely a moral compass in that heart somewhere, it's confusing to those observing just which way it is pointing.
Auria is ambitious, driven, serious, calm, and hard to read.
Story: Auria was born in Fibernia, the capital of Etruria's hold on the Western Isles. Meaning, in many ways, she is more Etrurian then anything. However being so far from the motherland is bound to create certain differences and eccentricities that do not exist in the land of the Prophet. The iron clutch of religion isn't as tightly squeezing the people who live there, but you can feel the pressure all the same. Her mother, a woman by the name of Katia, was but a simple maid to a government official the presided over the capital. Or at least she was before Dahlia had been born.
Katia was born in Etruria, where she got a job as a maid at a young age, and when the man moved over to Fibernia she came along. She lived in the home with him, as she was relocated at his request, and she was still young. Only barely eighteen at the time, and a short while later she was found to be pregnant with child. It was very clear to everyone with eyes what had happened, but rather then admit responsibility the official quickly expelled the pregnant women from his home. He was a married man, an honest man of Elmine, with several children of his own, he didn't want nasty rumors to be started about his infidelity. It left the poor Katia on the streets with barely a gold to her name, and she had to scrape and work and save and try her absolute hardest to barely manage a semblance of a life in the island city.
Her family back home cut off all ties to her, following her departure from home. Some were jealous of how a young woman managed to get such a secure position with such a rich man, while others chastised her for being a harlot. They told her that if she left with the man, that she could not return, and they followed true to their word. Katia was abandoned, and had not a single soul to count on but herself in the raising of her daughter, Auria.
Auria was forced to grow up very fast, her mother had to leave her for long periods of time to eek out a meager living. She was a beggar, she was a maid, she did whatever she could to get any semblance of gold to care for her child. Meanwhile Auria was just a little girl and did not understand. She was not schooled, she was not cared for like other children might, she did not have a father who dared to care for her, all she had was herself and her mother. Almost everything she knew was things taught to her by either her mother or things she taught herself.
Back when her mother worked for this nobleman, he made sure she was taken care of. He taught her to read, so that they could secretly exchange notes, and this was a skill she passed on to Auria. Who in turn used this skill to great advantage as she taught herself many things. While other children played and were schooled by tutors and teachers, she was forced to school herself in the library of Fibernia. While she was clearly a clever girl, it meant nothing if she didn't even have the basics to work off of. It was a lousy, incomplete education, but it was the best she could hope to have.
As she grew older, she grew interested in magic. She wasn't a very strong person, however even the weakest man can be a great mage. For it was strength of mind and not strength of body that was important. This is how she saw it, and she was confident in her mind. While she wasn't the most knowledgeable woman in the world, she was clever and quick to learn, which she believed to be the most important qualities in magic. She wasn't content to just 'manage' and 'barely scrape by' for the rest of her life. She was determined, determined to make something of herself. She saw magic as the perfect vehicle for this. After all, to get out of this situation she found herself in, she was gonna need a little magic.
There were three avenues before the fifteen year old girl, Anima, Divine, and Elder. Divine would have been the easiest, as they were technically parts of Etruria, but she did not want to give her heart and 'faith' to a false icon that has never done a thing for her in her life. No. Divine would not do. Elder was 'forbidden' to learn, but it wasn't a strongly enforced policy. There were plenty of elder arts users in Fibernia, looking to escape Etruria's watchful eyes under the reign of the Prophet. Some stupid man Auria knew nothing about. That made the decision easy. Dark magic was the most 'powerful' kind of magic anyways, it would be fitting for her ambition.
While she was not a thief by nature, it wasn't difficult to swipe a tome from some wandering shaman for her own use. Old and worn, black and filled with small little notes from its previous owner, it was a perfect tome to start her training. By trial and error, excruciating analysis of the book, reference books in the library, and a non-stop supply of determination and passion, over the course of two years she managed to teach herself the basics of dark magic.
Now, emboldened by her success in magic, she left her home looking for her fortune and success. Determined to never go hungry again, and one day pay her mother back for all the sacrifices she was forced to make for her.
