Stop one: Santaruz
Merio had been called to Santaruz by order of the marquis, for reasons unknown. After a bit of asking around, he learned that he wasn't the only one who received a summons like this, only the most recent. Lately Santaruz has been contacting the smaller territories of Lycia for some reason or another, he's never quite figured out why. Of course it would all become clear shortly, but at the moment all he knew is that the lord wished to see the Knight-Commander of Tania, and he would comply. Truthfully Tania had little in the means to refuse, Santaruz was the largest and wealthiest of the Lycian league and it could crush Tania with nary a thought if it so desired. Meanwhile if they were proposing an alliance of sorts, it could be of great benefit.
This summons is what spurned Merio's quest to explore about the country of Lycia. He was leaving Tania either way, but this way he could use the trip as an opportunity to learn about what is happening in Lycia as well as drum up support for Tania. Along on this quest was his lord, Audric, and he hired the mercenary Orcleous to come along as well. Then there was Chelsea, and perhaps her friend Claire as well. A motley crew to say the least, but five bested one, and it was better to have company upon a trip such as this. It could be long, and boring, or perhaps even dangerous. Who knows what is happening in the other territories? Perhaps too much for him alone to handle. Either way it's best to have men at his back, Merio was a leader and he worked better when he had people to lead.
What would otherwise be a normal day like any other was marred by a dark cloud and a storm of grey. It was otherwise a chilly day late fall, maybe early winter. Sometimes it was hard to tell the two apart, perhaps Merio should invest in a calender. A frigid rain fell from the sky, sending shivers down his spine as the icy air eased on into his bones. It was like a mist of cold coming from a thick sky of grey, the clanging of thunder was in the distance but it lacked the lightning that preceded it.
The streets were bare, no one wished to be out on such a foul day. Of course when you were preparing for a long journey you didn't have time to be picky about weather, and so Merio found himself wandering the streets of Santaruz nearly alone. It wasn't quite as abandoned as he said, people rushing through the rain from building to building and people bundled up in coats of fur and hide to stay warm. Merio felt a small chill through his spine as he walked about with his tunic and a coat, getting wet and hopefully not sick. He had left his armor this time because he hated having to clean it after rain, and it wasn't so important that he have it on today. To prevent rusting required a lot of time wiping down and waxing his armor and really he just didn't have the time for that right now.
He was near the guard station, waiting for a few minutes to see if anyone would show. He wasn't planning on it, but he didn't want to be gone if they did show. Just in case.
