The moment the fight began, Lorna felt nothing but purest fire course through every fiber of her being. It was a trap. That was all she needed to know and all she could afford to think about. Her instincts told her to focus on the battle and she was quick to do just that.
Five men, all axe using buffoons, leapt out of the shadows with their weapons in hand. Lorna went to ready her lance with a fierce glare on her face. Of course they were using axes: the signature weapon of highwaymen. Axes didn't require nearly half the training a lance or a sword did, just the strength to swing them and basic combat skills. So they were cheap and easy to use weapons, which were all the average bandit could afford.
Before Lorna had unstrapped her lance Ace, to her surprise, dispatched one of the axe-men by driving his sword through the man's gut. That was one down, and four to go...no, five. The creep in the robes had drawn a tome.
That was her target.
The shaman's turned his focus to Ace after he had incapacitated a second brigand, so Lorna charged at him while he was distracted. She heard Ace try to yell something after her but she didn't give it any thought. Instead, with a cry of valor, she drove her lance straight at the shaman's chest with all of her might. In her haste and anger her form was quite off, and if she missed she would likely stumble and nearly fall down because of it. After all she was still a recruit, and this was her first real battle.

With the boy basically defeated and one of his minions were dragging him to the dungeons, the dark robed man turned to find the girl. To his surprise she was neigh 5-10 feet from him with her lance aimed straight at him. Her form was slightly off, so her aim was slightly off too. The shaman tried to move out of the way to his right, but was too slow since Lorna drove her lance into his left shoulder. "Gah! The pain! You buffoons get her! Stop making me do everything!" The shaman yelled at the two remaining axemen. The shaman pulled out the lance with his right hand, while his tome was on the ground because he held it in his left hand. He screeched in pain as the lance finally came out. The shaman knew it wouldn't kill him right away, so he decided to flee into the shadows to get healed.
Now it was just Lorna and the two axemen left. They looked at each other and gave off a stupid smile since they were alone with the girl. "Now, now li'tle girl. Why you tring to be so scary? You shud jus come wit us. We can have some fun!" One of the fools said in a dumb, uneducated manner. The other one just seemed nod in agreement to what the first one said. They came closer to Lorna each with a hand out trying to touch her, while the other hand held their axes.
-=-=-=-
Ace could tell he was being dragged since his body was burning. These nice clothes are all ruined,Ace thought sadly as he saw his clothes were getting quite dirty. The axeman continued to drag the young cavalier all the way down to a dungeon. It was dark, but voices could be heard. They took a turn and soon Ace saw what seemed like 30-50 people. He couldn't tell since the cells were so small and since there were so many people. The axeman came up to a cell with keys in one hand and Ace in the other. He opened the cell doors and threw Ace inside the cell. The axeman locked the cell and went to go guard the entrance of the dungeons. He left the keys on a stand nearby one of the cells.
"Are you okay?" Ace jumped when he heard the sound. He turned and saw a man looking at him with worrisome eyes. Ace noticed that he had armor of a cavalier, but it seemed to be more advanced in a way. To wear such armor must of meant that the man had quite some skill in fighting.
"Yeah I'm ... okay." Ace tried to say, but he still felt weak from the shaman's attack. Then the man pulled out what seemed to be a vulnerary. He applied it to Ace and soon Ace was feeling a bit better.
"I am Captain Riddick Leflore of Laus. I am in charge of the 27th Platoon for Laus, nicknamed Pax. Pax means peace if you didn't know. The middle aged man said. Ace was somewhat surprised to find this man in a cell along with all these young people that fell for the trap.
"Nice to meet you. I'm Ace Wilzor. Do you have a plan of how to get out of here?"
"As a matter of fact, I do..."

Lorna grinned wildly as her lance drew the blood of the shaman. She felt an odd shiver through her body at the sight of her spear embedded into the shoulder of the man. Her aim had been off and her thrust far, far too slow, but she was excited just knowing that she had done harm to the pathetic shaman, and practically laughed when he started screaming for his henchmen to assist him.
Battle lust had caught up to her, and she didn't notice her enemy pushing her lance out of his body. She stumbled backwards, struggling to find her balance again, and froze once she did. She felt the large, sweaty hand of one of the axe users cupped against her body. Slowly Lorna turned her head around to look at the man, and slowly she felt her blood begin to boil hotter and hotter.
"Get your nasty paws off of me!" She practically snarled, whipping her whole body around. Lorna stepped back and swung her lance at the disgusting man, nothing but rage and hatred in her eyes.

Ace watched as Riddick signaled something to a young girl. The next thing Ace knew was that the dungeon was full of shouting from this young girl. She seemed to be about 13 years old. It echoed throughout the dungeon making the axeman come from guarding the door down to the dungeon. "Shaddup!" He shouted at the girl.
"B-but I can't take living in this dungeon anymore. I-I saw how you took some of the girls out of this dungeon. C-Could you take me?" The young girl asked shyly. Ace hoped that this plan, whatever it is, succeeds so that the girl doesn't get in any serious danger. The axeman took the keys from the little stand and opened the girl's cell door. He just grinned and came closer to the girl. She did a fake smile and went for his hands. She acted like an innocent young girl, but as soon as the man loosened up his hands she grabbed the keys swiftly and threw them over to Riddick. He thrust his hand threw the cell wall and barely caught the keys he ran over to the cell door and opened it. The axeman was confused with what was going on and tried to find his weapon, but he left his axe over by the dungeon entrance. Riddick ran over to the axeman and tackled him. The young girl grabbed the keys from Riddick's cell and started to open all the other people's cells. Ace ran out of his cell and went over to the axeman's axe. He picked it up and saw that the axeman threw Riddick back into a wall. Ace ran over and with all his might he swung the axe into the axeman's back. The axeman stopped attacking Riddick and tried to pull out the axe. After a few seconds, the man simply fell to the ground with blood starting to pour onto the ground.
"Good job young man. I was in a bit of a pickle there." Riddick complimented Ace. Ace just looked at him nodding his head. Killing actual people was something Ace wasn't used to. All of the other captives were now freed. Riddick grabbed the keys from the girl and opened a cell that held the people's belongings. Riddick himself grabbed a steel sword and a steel lance, while Ace grabbed his iron sword. Ace noticed the weapons Riddick picked up.
"You're a Paladin!" Ace said in awe. Riddick nodded and went over to the crowd of people telling them to stay calm and wait here until it's safe He pointed at Ace signaling for them to go upstairs and take on whatever danger comes. They charged up the steps from the dungeon and ran through the fort looking for Lorna. After making a turn in a hall, they found Lorna with two more axemen, but no shaman. They seemed to be trying to touch her. This made Ace quite angry.
"Get away from her!" Ace yelled as he charged the axemen with his sword in hand. He tackled one of the axemen and did a spin strike to the the left, but Ace wasn't very experienced with that move and missed. The axeman swung his axe horizontally, but Ace parried it with his sword. In a quick second, Ace looked around to see what was happening with Riddick and Lorna. Riddick was handling two next axemen that must have just appeared from somewhere. Lorna was still with the other axeman. He seemed to give up touching her and grabbed his axe bringing it down with a vertical swing. Hopefully she can handle him. I think she can. She's tough. Ace gave up trying to outmatch the axeman's strength since the axeman was definitely stronger. Ace darted to the right and gave a quick jab to the axeman's right side. It made contact and made the axeman cringe and fall to the ground. Ace pulled his sword out of the axeman's side and looked over to see how his allies were faring...

Everything happened so quickly that it left Lorna, and her opponents, rather shocked. Out of nowhere Ace seemed to return to the fight and tackled one of the axe users to the ground. She heard the footsteps and voices of others, too...but she cursed anyway and glared at her opponent. Her last swing of her lance had been off target and she missed him, but at least the arrival of reinforcements distracted him long enough that he didn't counter-attack.
Lorna's blood still boiled as she held her lance out towards the enemy. He spat on the ground and raised his axe, cursing about the situation. It seemed he had given up on trying to grope her and decided he should just aim to kill her. Lorna snorted before thrusting her lance at him.
He should have done that in the first place.
The axe user side-stepped her attack but, unlike her running thrust she did at the shaman, this was a far more tame action. Lorna's balance was intact even though this attack missed, and she pivoted to slash her lance at the enemy, the tip of her weapon catching the burly man's torso and ripping through the flesh. He let out a howl of pain as his wound began to bleed, and once again Lorna wore a sadistic grin on her face.
Enraged by the pain the axe-man rushed her at full force, quickly moving past the range her last gave and bringing his axe up for a swing. Lorna, inexperienced as she was, failed to keep him at spear's length and cursed when he got so close. She kicked out as hard as she could, her boot connecting with the man's thigh, but that hardly stopped his charge. He brought down his axe on Lorna's left shoulder and she cried out when she felt the metal crush her pauldron and dig into her flesh.
It hurt more than any pain she had ever felt before.
And it only drove her into a deeper rage.
Lorna roared and brought her lance back, lining the tip up with the brigand's chest. The bandit moved to lift his axe out of her shoulder but she brought her left arm up and gripped his wrist as firmly as she could, buying herself enough time to drive her lance clear through the large man's torso. The brigand groaned out in agony, his grip on his axe loosening before falling forward slowly. Lorna tried her best to pull her lance out of the man's body but to no avail, instead crying out as his bleeding corpse fell onto her, knocking her onto the ground and pinning her there.

After Ace brought down his opponent, he turned around to see what happened to his allies. Riddick seemed to handle the two axemen quickly with his blade, but Ace knew that he had much experience in combat that the inexperienced axemen were probably easy for him. Ace and Riddick both looked for Lorna, but she seemed to have just disappeared. Ace started to get a little worried. He hoped she wasn't hurt. Ace kept looking and then noticed that a lance was sticking out of a man's back. Ace ran over to the body and noticed Lorna's burgundy hair sticking out from under the body. He heard what seemed like cursing underneath the body, but he wasn't sure if he was just hearing things. Riddick came over to help Ace move the body off Lorna. Riddick pulled out the lance as Ace held the body. Riddick held his hand out for Lorna.
"My name is Riddick Leflore, captain of Laus's 27th Platoon. You seem to be hurt, I'm going to apply a vulnerary to your shoulder." Riddick told Lorna in a calm manner in order to try and keep her calm. Ace scouted the chamber to make sure there were no more axemen hiding. He huffed out a sigh of relief when he found no more axemen were there. However, Ace knew that the shaman was still out there somewhere. Then Ace remembered Troy was missing. Ace gave a quick whistle hoping that Troy would somehow find him. Suddenly, the sound of hooves galloping occurred and the Troy appeared from the nearest hall. Ace smiled in glee that his horse was okay. Ace hoped on Troy and galloped over to Lorna and Riddick.
"How are you feeling Lorna? Do you know what happened to that shaman? He seems to be the one in charge. Ace asked anticipating her answer, while Riddick finished applying the vulnerary to his shoulder.

Lorna blinked as she felt the dead man pulled off of her. The man who did this called himself Riddick, and was a captain of Laus' military. What was one of her superiors doing here? She watched as he freed her lance, now thoroughly soaked in blood, and then winced as the man applied a vulnerary to the gash in her shoulder. The sting of the medicine only served to remind her that she'd need a new pauldron, which further fouled her mood.
"Captain Riddick. My name is Lorna Scathach, a new recruit into Laus' infantry. I have not yet been assigned to a platoon or a captain," She stated, pausing to grit her teeth in pain. The vulnerary was working it's magic but her wound would take at least a week to fully heal. At least the bleeding was beginning to stop. She gave the captain a glance before looking away, quietly uttering a "Thank you,"
Lorna then turned her head and looked over at Ace. In her rage she hadn't really noticed the shaman...he was wounded, though, so the odds were he scurried off to tend to his wound.
"I could be better, obviously," Lorna spat. She then winced and hesitated. Ace had helped save her life, twice now at that. The man had been nothing but kind to her, so snapping at him made her feel a twinge of guilt. This was unfortunate, as guilt only further served to aggravate her. "Sorry, the wound hurts like hell," She replied quickly. Lorna wasn't the type to apologize, and even when she did she thought she was rather bad at it, so the quicker she got it over with the better.
"As for that creepy bastard...I think the craven crawled off into the shadows. I got him good with my lance, so he's probably trying to stop the bleeding,"

"Sorry, the wound hurts like hell,"
Ace gave Lorna a sympathetic look. He hoped her wound would heal well. Ace wondered whether or not he should chase the shaman. He organized all of this, allowing for all those young people to be captured for days, some even weeks. Ace knew he couldn't allow the shaman to roam free. He could try to do something awful like this again in the future. I absolutely can't allow that to happen.
"As for that creepy bastard...I think the craven crawled off into the shadows. I got him good with my lance, so he's probably trying to stop the bleeding,"
"Captain Leflore, do you think we should go after the shaman? I don't believe we can afford for him to be roaming free," Ace stated his concerns to the experienced captain. Riddick looked over at Ace after he finished inspecting Lorna's arm to make sure the vulnerary was doing its magic.
"We have to finish this. I didn't tell you this, but before I got captured- Riddick paused before continuing again. " My platoon came here to investigate the mysterious disappearances that were being reported. There were 15 of us. We got ambushed from the brigands. There were about 50 of them probably. Most of my platoon was killed, while some cowards fled and left their brothers behind. They captured me thinking that they could ransom me off. We were able to kill most of the brigands off however. There are probably only a few left in this fort. We must take the fight to their leader. If we finish him then the rest of the brigands will disperse." Riddick finished with a flame of determination in his eyes.
"Alright, I'm ready to finish this." Ace looked to Lorna in concern. "What about Lorna though?"
"Lorna came come with us. She may be able to observe something that might save us. The more the merrier I always say." The paladin gave off a laugh. Ace just smiled at the captain's enthusiasm. The cavalier was on top of Troy and offered Lorna a hand to help her get onto Troy as well.

The two men seemed to have the idea of tracking down the shaman. Hm, if he was the leader of this band of corpses than Lorna was more than willing to see his life come to an end. After all the whole reason she was here, and the reason her should had a gash in it, was because that creepy shaman created this stupid plan. "Ransoming hostages? Real original tactic for a bandit..." Lorna thought bitterly. Being who she was, it as unlikely anyone would pay a single coin for her safety...which only made a fate as a bandit hostage even more terrifying. After all: what did brigands do with women they couldn't sell?
Lorna's eyes darkened as she took Ace's hand, though she did wince due to the pain in her shoulder and she climbed on top of Troy. "Yeah, of course I'm in. Not sure I'll be of much use in the fight, but I'll help you two track the son of a bitch down,"

After what seemed like an eternity of traveling throughout the dark fort, the trio ended up finding a chamber with what looked like an old throne at the end of the chamber. Sitting in the throne was none other than the shaman. He sat in a relaxed, laid-back position with his legs up on one of the arms of the chair. As the trio entered, he just started clapping slowly.
"Well, well. It seems like you have 'saved' the captives. Are you proud of yourselves? He took a moment to pause and wait for a response. "Never mind, don't answer that. It won't matter once your dead. My minions are ten times weaker than me, especially when I'm wielding my true tome ... Luna! He stood up from his seat and casted Luna. He sent it flying towards Ace and Lorna. Ace pulled Troy's reins to the left and the horse quickly responded. The dodged the attack just barely. Riddick charged the shaman and started to engage him.
"Lorna! Defend yourself in a safe area. Riddick and I will handle this." He let Lorna get off of Troy so that Ace could ride into battle. He charged the shaman with his sword in hand. Ace saw Riddick lose his sword from dark magic, but the paladin grabbed the steel lance resting upon his back and prepared to use it. Ace could tell Riddick was a little uncomfortable with fighting without a horse. Ace and Troy got closer to the shaman and prepared to strike him with a horizontal slash...

Lorna was forced to dismount Ace's horse after the cavalier narrowly steered them out of the range of strange magical blast. Lorna hadn't encountered too many mages, let alone dark mages, so she had no idea what sort of power this "Luna" tome held. The recruit cursed as she landed on the ground. Her shoulder was in a great deal of pain still, and she would be more than useless for the remainder of the fight. The best thing she could do was try to evade the shaman's black magic.
"Damn it," She cursed mentally, gripping her lance with her good arm and watching as Ace rode out towards the enemy. She hated this feeling: being powerless. It was half the reason she was so focused on getting stronger in the first place. Lorna wanted to be able to depend on nobody but herself in any situation, yet today she barely managed to take down one pathetic brigand and suffered quite the injury for her efforts.
Her blood was still boiling, though. A lust for battle coursed through her veins even with that sharp pain in her shoulder. A lance was a weapon that required both hands to wield to full effectiveness, and with one arm lame she wouldn't be able to utilize hers properly. So, for the first time since she began training and fighting, Lorna was forced to stand back and watch. Even with her chest ablaze with excitement and battlelust, she would have to endure it...and not just tonight. It would be at least a week before she was ready to battle again, Lorna imagined.
At least she hoped it would only be that long.

Ace's inexperience showed when Ace had a clear shot, but only managed to graze the shamans chest. Ace's horse continued to gallop past the shaman and prepared to turn around. As Ace turned and looked back to the shaman, he saw Riddick dodge a blast of Luna. It seemed like the shaman had inexperience with this "ultimate" tome of his. Riddick landed on his feet and leaped at the shaman with his lance pointing straight at his chest. The shaman didn't have a chance to react at all. The lance went straight threw his chest making it come out the other side. He gurgled up blood and slowly looked down to see the lance inside his body.
"I-I lost. This ca-can't be happ-happening ... I'm be-better than y-you all!" He screeched and his last breath came soon after. The shaman was finally dead. Riddick was panting hard while Ace and his horse galloped back over to him.
"Are you okay Ace? Did he get you?" Riddick asked with concern. He inspected Ace to make sure he was okay.
"I'm fine I think. You handled most of the fighting anyways." Ace was just tired from all the fighting to be honest. He felt like he could sleep for days after this. "We need to go get Lorna some medical assistance away from here." He looked over to the recruit and hoped that she could hold out for a bit longer. I know she can.
"Go ahead and start taking her back to Laus Castle so that she can get healed up more properly. I will go get all the other captives from the dungeon." Riddick turned and dashed out from the main chamber in search for the dungeon. Ace and his steed hurried over to Lorna and Ace helped her up to ride along with him. They took off quickly with hopes of getting away from this fort and never having to see it again.
-=-Timeskip-=-
Everyone had returned back to Laus Castle. The captives returned back to their lives and thanked Lorna, Ace, and Riddick for saving them. It was just the three of them now. Riddick had acquired a white steed from the castle and came up to the two young warriors.
"Well you two had quite an eventful little experience. I am grateful for both of your assistance in the trivial matter. I know that Lorna needs to go and get her shoulder checked to make sure there is no infection and to also get some rest. However, I want to discuss something with both of you real quick. As you two know, my platoon has been decimated down to just me. I just asked a commanding officer a very important question and he said yes. So Lorna and Ace, would you two like to join Laus's 27th Militant Platoon? I could use both of your skills and help teach you how to become stronger." He finished his question with a grin and waited for the two younger people's responses.
Ace was quite surprised at the captain's proposal. Maybe this could be the first step to becoming a stronger warrior that will eventually help rebuild Ostia one day. He had heard rumors of Lycia wanting to fight Eturia or something, so maybe this was a step forward towards becoming part of that. Ace just wasn't if he was ready to join the military. He looked over to Lorna and wondered what her response was going to be...

Lorna couldn't help but grin a bit as the shaman finally fell to the ground, dead. It was nothing less than what he deserved. Trying to collect a bunch of a people just to ransom them off for profit, what a sick joke. The whole experience just served to remind her why she hated bandits in the first place. That, and that she still had a ways to go when it came to getting stronger.
Ace rode over to her and offered her his hand, which she took to help climb on top of his horse. He aimed to head back to Laus and seek medical treatment for her at the castle. Tch, she'd probably get made fun of by her comrades, at least a little bit at any rate. What soldier was stupid enough to willingly walk into a trap like this and wind up getting themselves hurt? It wasn't exactly a battle scar Lorna would be proud of, since it only came from some pathetic brigand. At the same time she supposed it was the only one she currently had.
And she would get more, ones that she could take pride in.
-
Lorna didn't really know how to react when the other captives thanked her. She was happy for them, now that they had been freed, but during the battle she hadn't really thought of them at all. Awkwardly she would tell them it was "no big deal", even though some of them felt guilty about her injury. Lorna didn't see why, it had been her stupid fault that she was injured in the first place.
She was even further surprised when Riddick asked her to join his platoon. Lorna was close to graduating from recruit to infantry, and if she joined with Riddick, who had personal experience with her and saw what she could do, perhaps she'd climb the military ranks faster. But with Lorna it wasn't about how fast she could climb ranks, but the best way to get stronger. Right now Lorna couldn't help but think that she needed to keep training with her fellow recruits. Perhaps when she was a full-fledged soldier she would join.
"Thanks for the offer, but I'll have to pass for now," Lorna replied. She didn't bother going into details as to why she was turning the offer down, she just didn't think it was necessary, but she smirked back at him and Ace, "Besides, it'll still be some time before I'm combat ready. Speaking of which I gotta head back to the infirmary and get checked up,"
She looked between the two men and nodded, "Perhaps we'll meet again, and...thanks," Lorna uttered quickly before turning on her heel and walking away.

"Perhaps we'll meet again, and...thanks,"
Well it seems that Lorna had made her choice. He respected her decision and her dedication to working hard herself for what she wants. He was a bit surprised that she said thanks. He smiled at her as she started to walk away. She was a good person at heart, no matter how hard she tried to hide it. Ace turned to hear Riddick begin talking again and the cavalier knew that he had to make the decision for himself.
"Very well Lorna. It was a pleasure to meet and fight alongside you. I know that you will become a great soldier one day. Maybe a leader of your own platoon or possibly something even larger. He did a slight bow and turned to Ace. "Well? What about you? Are you going to take up my offer?"
"Um ... uhh ..." Ace was at a loss for words. He wanted to join Riddick, but something was holding him back. Fighting for Laus wasn't something Ace ever considered doing. Ace wanted to fight for Ostia. Ostia was his true home, not Laus. I need more time. "Riddick, I thank you for all of your kindness and for your offer. However, I need some more time to think about it. Will you keep your offer on the table for a while longer? Ace hoped he would say yes.
"I will keep my offer available for some time longer. Just come find me somewhere near Laus Castle. I will be anywhere that is in need of assistance. Riddick grinned at Ace and yanked the reins of his horse. They made a quick turn and began to travel away. Ace turned to see Lorna leaving to go get medical assistance. He pulled the reins of Troy, so that they could catch up. The path forked when Ace caught up to Lorna. They just looked at each other and seemed to say goodbye in a silent way. She walked to the left as Ace and Troy went right. Thanks Lorna for ... a good memory. We will see each other soon enough, I just know it...
