Silence was what Jude's confession met, Mel lying still with her head resting on her arms. Her cheeks were aflame, and she dared not even look behind her to see what sort of expression the pink-haired buffoon wore. Mel didn't want him to see the awkward expression she wore, teeth clenched and lips pulled taut to avoid a smile. Somehow his words were satisfying, comforting, and honestly made her feel...well odd? She wasn't sure how to respond. There was an uncomfortable prickle in her chest at the thought of responding with anything more than a shrug. Receiving such soft words from Jude was certainly awkward. How had she ever wanted him to bring up so many things that she had done on mere whim into the spotlight?
"...Uh..."
She trailed off, still searching for the words as Jude's weight shifted in the bed. Her chest was simply aflutter, the girl curling her hands into fists in an effort to curb the warm feelings that bubbled up. Jude had yet to run off after all this time, and he had certainly been given reason to at quite a few points in their journeys. Mel could admit that at times she might have been a little, somewhat, maybe just a little bit harsh and forceful with her words. If she had use of her good arm sticks and stones would likely have joined the pile of offenses. However through all of it Jude hadn't wavered. The man had kept her company with nothing to gain, she could at least admit it to herself. Never, even on the threat of death would she admit that she was growing to enjoy his company. Foul filterless mouth and all.
"Don't be such a pisspot" Mel spat before she could concoct a more appropriate reply, eyes narrowed as she sat up to watch him climb off the bed. Her discomfort with the tension had acted before sense. She knew she was slapping him in the face, but she would never take it back. Jude gloating was far too irritating.
Wrapped up in her dilemma she ad barely taken notice of her patient leaving the bed until he already had one leg on the floor. That blithering idiot! Why didn't he ever do what she told him to! An unholy mix between a gasp, curse, and a grunt burst from her lips as she lunged forward. The girl's knees slammed into the hard wood, pressing up against his back to steady him after his fall. Her arms curved under his armpits, growling with the strain as she helped his useless carcass onto the bed. With how much he weighed it was a wonder why he wasn't a little larger. It might not be as pleasant to look at, but a round Jude was somehow less offensive than a fit one.
"What-did-I=tell-you-moron-to-rest..." The rest of her hurried verbal vomit became inaudible, the silver haired girl muttering under her breath as she shoved him back down against the pillows. She gave Jude a dark look raised an angry finger, mouth fluttering open and closed like a fish as she floundered for the right words to express just how... Just how irritatingly stupid he was.
"Stay!"
Mel jabbed her finger towards the mattress, hand on her hip as she stared down at him from atop his chest. "If you tear this ones I'll...I'll..." She sputtered, a path opening up to channel her discomfort unto Jude where it belonged. Damn him and his gratitude. "I'll set your-...No! I'll-...erm." The heat spread from her cheeks, whole face vibrant enough to rival a strawberry. She had just taken notice that she was sitting on his bare chest, and that he still lacked the pants he was so desperately vying for.
"Just stay..." Her voice trailed off, a few decibels higher than usual as she rolled off him and resumed her plank position. "Sleep...something...."

"ACK!" Jude exclaimed, feeling the uneasy and fierce weight of Mel's attempt to save him. His body ached, and every touch only made it worse. He didn't want to recognize that he'd done this to himself, and so he neglected to tell her how much pain he was in. He was certainly good at saving face-- and he would be sure to always be that way, especially around her. He still wasn't totally sure he could trust her. Sometimes he thought she could get him killed, but something in him told Jude to push that thought away, as though it were so unlikely it wasn't even worth considering.
The boy sighed heavily as he found himself on the bed again, and lazily lifted his eyes up and around the room, trying to avoid eye contact with this screaming child on his torso. He left his arms limp at his sides, trying his very best to ignore her, to look at everything so in depth that he could write a report on the room itself. Anything to keep from making eye contact. Anything he could do to keep himself preoccupied was great-- it meant he didn't have to deal with whatever it was that was going on between them. Jude wasn't even sure what to call it. As Mel's voice increased in volume, Jude sighed heavily, more loudly, in an effort to get her to stop. Eventually he realized he couldn't, and the red-eyed boy simply shut his lids and tried to breathe in deeply, shutting out all the sounds of the moment.
What am I doing? I'm in no shape for this sh*t right now. As much as I hate to admit it, she's right. She's right, and I can't tell her that. I just need to rest. We can take today off, maybe, and then... Hell, go somewhere tomorrow. I can't risk tearing any more wounds open again. It would be too much for her--
Jude stopped himself from finishing the thought and his eyes shot open as Mel told him to stay. His own cheeks flushed deeply red as he finally made eye contact with the girl and realized that hers were the same shade. "Oh yeah?" He chided, leaning forward towards her against his better judgment. "No, go ahead! You'll what? What is it, huh?! You'll burn my house down?! Ain't got one-a those! You'll take my sh*t? I ain't got anything! You can't do anything to me!"
The angry boy tried to push Mel off of him, but as his arms gripped around her shoulders, he couldn't. Scared, he immediately let go and let himself fall back onto the bed. He wanted to cry, but he wouldn't allow himself to do it. "If I'm such a pisspot, go on without me. You don't need me for anything else, right? Why do you even bother sticking around if I'm such a weight on your shoulders?"
Jude tried his best to turn around so he didn't have to face her, but his body was too weak. He sighed, disgruntled, but otherwise recovered. "I can't stand just sitting here, like a useless... F*ck, like a useless mass of weight. We have to leave. I'm fine."

Why can't he just stay put?
Is he some sort of overgrown toddler that is unable to comprehend the difference between someone being mean and someone being right?
"You are a useless f*ck. Did you miss the giant sign pointing to you?" There was a bite to her tone as she turned her head. "No?" Mel raised herself up onto her elbows and stared at him, eyes narrowed into icy slits. Oh how he vexed her. Jude was just about everything she hated, save the rampant zealotry. He was stubborn to well beyond a fault, hotheaded enough to cook eggs on his scalp, and loud enough to make her ears bleed. There was nothing good about him, not one spec of usefulness in all of his tall stupidity. Why did she feel the need to stick so close to something that left her peeved.
"We aren't going anywhere. We're staying here until I say so." She sat up fully and scooted towards the foot of the beg where his legs rested. "Did you think I was going to let you get up and ruin my work on your leg? Again? Leaving you useless for even longer?" She raised her hand and slapped the wound venomously, not breaking eye contact with the buffoon even to blink. "There" she spat, slapping it a second time without hesitation. However she didn't feel any better from it, and her point for the whole matter had flown right out of her thoughts.
Once again she had to question why it was she even cared enough to stick around the useless ape. Why she cared to take care of his injuries he had obtained through further stupidity. She knew why, but she didn't want to admit it, especially at times like these when he frustrated her to the point that pulling out her fingernails was a far less stressful use of her time.
"If you stop being a pisspot and listen you'll only be in bed for a few days." Mel quickly rose from the bed to avoid the angrily flying limbs, hands childishly rising up to cover her ears for another one of Jude's rants. She raised her own voice further to drown him out. "We aren't going and I said so! You're staying right there! It's your fault I can't just leave you, it'd be irritating to be alone! So shut it!"
A booming voice drowned the both of them out, a fist slamming on the door as another patron bellowed at them to be quiet.
Mel rolled her eyes at the disturbance and leaned in towards Jude's face, staring firmly into his eyes, so close that their noses nearly touched. She spoke in a soft whisper, hands pressing into the mattress as she leaned over him. "So just shut your useless mouth or find something better to do with it than be stupid."

Jude snarled, leaning forward with all his might. He immediately reached down and held a hand over his sore abdomen, as though keeping a hand on it might help him feel better. It didn't. Feeling isolated and stuck in place on the bed, all the boy could do was lean forward, angrily gritting his teeth, trying with all his strength not to hit her. It was a tough job; he felt like even in his weakened state, it wouldn't take much to throw her out the window and hope that she hit the ground hard enough that he might not have to deal with her anymore. A quiet grumble slipped out of his flashed, animalistic teeth and he leaned his head in closer, fierce eyes trained on Mel as she slapped his wound not once, but twice.
Her head didn't move, and his didn't either. He felt the surge of pain, and moaned a little through his teeth, but otherwise left his gaze fixed, his eyes unflinching. He leaned in more, red eyes glowing more with hatred by the second. How dare she, he thought. How dare she.
His voice was low, a growl, like a tiger about to lunge at its prey. "Who the hell are you to tell me what I can and can't do? The hell do you think you are, my mother? F*ck you, Mel! F*ck you!" He hissed, leaning in more as he said it. He tried to pick himself up, and his eyes squinted shut as the pain in his body begged him not to move. He was at his limit by this point, only moving forward by the will in his heart to be right, to show Mel that she couldn't boss him around. He screamed loudly, waving a hand in front of his face. He was growing so tired of his physical body; to him, it felt like a cage; he wanted to move, to get away from her, and for once, his body literally would not let him. He was finished... He needed to rest, and yet he still refused, time and again. He wouldn't let her win this one.
"You're not my godsdammed mother, so don't act like it! Gods! You're such a... Gods!" He let go of his abdomen and shoved the girl off of him forcefully, using the remaining energy in him to do so. "She's dead anyway! I don't need another! I know my limits, you gnome-looking, screeching little bastard! If I'm so stupid, f*cking leave! I don't need you!"
Jude tried again to roll over, and it failed him. He shouted again, then he heart the fist on the door. It shocked him back into himself a moment, and he blushed, quickly looking away towards the window as Mel approached him again. When he looked back, she was centimeters from his face. Jude could almost feel the sweat and the anger radiating from this blue-eyed demon. For a few very long, very tense moments, Jude was utterly silent, angry, vicious red eyes trained on the girl he wanted nothing to do with. He hadn't the energy to push her again, but he wasn't going to be moved by her attempts at controlling him. "I'll do what I want. So just... just..."
He swallowed hard. What was this? Suddenly, he realized that she was here, still with him, he was still mostly naked, and she was closer to him now than any girl had ever been before. His eyes faltered a moment, switching between vulnerability, fear, and anger. "I... Just... Gods, I hate you!" He turned away, and the words spilled out of his mouth like water being knocked from a table, uncoordinated and sloppy.
With terse movement and awkward handling, he craned his head slightly to the side and separated the girl's lips with his own. His eyes stayed open, looking away from her for a brief moment, before meeting them again as he awkwardly broke away, leaving his lips on hers for not any longer than a second or two, unsure of what to do or how to react.

Jude's kiss was clumsy, his lips just brushing her own almost as if it was an afterthought. He lit up like a torch and turned away, somehow embarrassed by the action. Mel didn't comment. She didn't understand. She simply pulled away and ran a hand back through her hair, tucking it behind her ear as she dropped down by her bag.
It was different that it was with Hiro. They usually had some sort of goal, or there was an underlying punch line. She couldn't quite detect what it was that Jude was intentding, but she certainly was not going to question it. Whatever it was he was staying still and quiet. Mel wasn't going to mess that up after fighting for the last ten minutes to get it. Instead she busied herself with bundles of herbs, dividing them up to estimate just how best to stretch them out. She could always pick more, so if selling some medicine gave them the finances for a few days more then it was worth it. Now all that was left to make some.
She leaned forward and started to work, Jude's kiss shoved to the back of her mind without a second thought. It was just a kiss and obviously meant nothing. With a sigh Mel began to work, stripping leaves from stems and staining the tips of her fingers green as she used her nails to claw open stems. Three days cooped up with Jude while he recuperated. It wouldn't be that horrid right?

"Um--"
His voice cracked, and Jude immediately regretted opening his mouth again. He looked down at Mel, who had climbed down the bed and was all but ignoring him outright. His gaze was fixed, but again detached, as though the boy couldn't be emotionally affected unless it was in anger or distaste. He felt neither of those things, and so he looked simply disinterested, though he wanted more than anything to be able to say something to soothe his awkwardness. Finding nothing, he simply watched her as she busied herself with her herbs and bag and the like.
Turning his gaze back towards the ceiling, Jude let out a quiet sigh and closed his red eyes. He wasn't sure what had just happened or what he'd just done, but it was certainly the first time it had ever happened, and he still couldn't name whatever feeling had come over him. For now, he figured it would be best to simply ignore it, but... Something was telling him not to. Whatever the something was, at present, he had more willpower than it. He hoped he always would. He didn't want to deal with anything right now. More than anything, he wanted this awkwardness to dissipate so they could leave and be on with their journey.
Declining to open his eyes again, Jude pretended he could see what was going on, and he pretended Mel was looking at him. He felt warm and red and exposed, and after a few seconds, pulled the blanket over himself. It didn't take him long at all to fall into another deep, restful sleep that lasted much, much longer than he would have ever intended.
