Aeos was glad that Gar had no problems with letting him keep both Oscar and the gem.
“I am sure the tiny metal man will have no complaints over my training.” Aeos responded. The spirits of the room responded to Aeos question. They blew away some of the sand off of a stone slab. Gar understood the basic principle of the seal. But, he couldn't hear all of the spirits at least not in the same manner Aeos could. From what he could tell they sounded like they could barely get one or two whispers out to him. Aeos knew Gar was not a mage and he certainly wasn't a dragon. So some of the more subtle voices of the spirits were lost on him. But, they were not lost to Aeos. He knew how to tap into some part of his element and listen to all the wind spirits. And they were whispering ill omens. This place was going to collapse once the seal was undone. From a logical perspective, it made sense. Why keep a special prison working once the special prisoner gets out?
He didn't blame the spirits. He knew the curses of longevity, the desperation of imprisonment, and sacrifice. He knew how desperate they were for release. The desert man placed his hand over the dragon stone around his neck. He knew the feeling of wanting to be free. Of wanting to fly. The spirits were invisible to the naked eye, they could fly freely, Aeos couldn't do any of that. His dragon form was too obvious. The spirits figured if the human died then it was nothing to them. His mind trailed back to the "Mountain" of Lycia. The "mountain" had a distain for humans too. Spirits are eternal. Aeos understood them. Part of him even agreed with their thinking.
He shook his head. Perhaps, if he had been raised differently, raised during the scouring, lost his parents violently, then maybe he'd think differently. Maybe he'd fully agree with them. Maybe consider sacrificing the human. But, Aeos wasn't raised like that. His parents were alive and well. They did not want vengeance for an era long past. Aeos was taught the value of life, he knew the struggles of life, and he knew how many ancient lives were lost to insure his parents survived. To insure that he would be born. So, that he could experience a life of his own. And he was not about to let the spirits take that away from him or from Gar. The dragon man cleared his throat and he spoke seriously.
“Gar wait! There be something you should know. If you put the box on the slab, this place will come undone. Trapping us here while the spirits go free.” He sighed.
“We be at a crossroads. If we leave the spirits remain trapped. If we free them then we remain trapped. Knowing this.. I still wish to free the spirits.” He paused. He wanted to hear Gar’s input before he spoke more about his plan. Aeos casually walked over and picked up the box. He stared at it for a moment, before turning to look at Gar. The dragon had intentions to let Gar leave this place while he stayed behind. Aeos was certain he could use his dragonic powers to escape this place unharmed.

Gar responded confidently at the conundrum they faced. “Luckily we have something the spirits don’t.” The pirate raised his left arm and flexed his bicep. Giving it a solid pat he attempted to reassure himself. “We got muscle. Even If the room caves in I can dig us out hahar.” Gar was smiling in an attempt to ease the severity of their situation. The smile slowly faded as he eventually understood this wasn’t a case that could be handled with simple bravado. The pirate inhaled deeply and released the air with a sigh. The stakes had been raised and Gar didn’t have a way out.
It isn’t fair. The only reason we’re in this situation is because of me and this dumb map. Gar clenched the map in his hand, then let it fall to the ground. He was racking his brain to find another way to release the spirits, but he couldn’t figure anything out. Gar scratched the back of his head in futility. Aeos began moving toward the metal slab, with the chest. The pirate moved to intercept him before he could get to his destination. A light breeze blew across the floor.
Gar placed his palm on top of the chest that Aeos held. He looked Aeos in the face as he spoke. “Let me do this. I understand the spirits should be free, but only one of us has to make a sacrifice.” Gar averted his eyes to the ground. He tried to speak with courage. “It should be me. I am the one who got us into this mess after all.” Gar had no intention of dying in the collapse, but he would certainly sustain a few broken bones. The self-proclaimed noble pirate was fine with the damage if it meant his friend would be safe.

Aeos smiled softly at Gar. The young dragon put the chest down on the nearby shelf and gave him a firm pat on the shoulder. He made it look like he was reaffirming the sailor's choice in sacrifice. Aeos was afraid of this. He had a feeling Gar would be willing to make the sacrifice himself. Why can’t you just let someone else take the hit for you you idiot. The dragon man sighed for a moment. He tapped into a small portion of his power. The physical changes were minor. His eyes became more stilted and his finger and toe tips showed some signs of scales. He then pressed his foot forward so he can trip the sailor, grab him, and throw him several feet toward the exit.
“عدم السماح له بالعودة الأرواح بهذه الطريقة!” (Spirits Do not let him return this way!) The dragon man shouted. And the spirits responded in turn. They blew out towards Gar some pretty strong winds in order to kick up sand and debris. Aeos took advantage of their “sand” screen, to fully half shift. To insure that Gar wouldn’t come back down this path the dragon kicked down a few cracked columns. This caused a portion of the ceiling to collapse thus barring one man from the other. The dragon man made sure to jump a few feet back before the debris fell. He then drew his hood up over his head so as to hide any of the more obvious dragonic features.
“Spirits! Before I do this.. I need to know of another path out.” A faint wind blew. Revealing a small air shaft that now let in sunlight. Aeos suspected he could blast it bigger in his full dragon form.
“Alright then let's get this over with.” He spoke to himself, grabbed the chest, and made his way to the slab.

The wind spirits conspired with Aeos to force Gar out of the room. With an unexpected strength, Aeos sent Gar stumbling through the exit. Columns fell behind the pirate, blocking the path back into the room. Gar turned to face the debris. He attempted to move some of the rubble out of the way, but quickly realized the futility. The pirate slammed his fist on a slab of sandstone. The only thing he could do was shout in anger and remorse. "Damn it Aeos! It should be me!" Gar yelled at the rocks more than anyone else. He repeated the message, this time in a quieter, more somber tone. "It should be me." Gar stood, bearing an unfamiliar mix of emotions. It isn't right. The only reason he was even here was because of me. Now he's gonna bring that whole room down on top of himself.
The man was unhappy with how the situation played out, but he quickly regained his sensibilities. Gar grunted. "If you can hear me, listen here! I will get you out of there. I will!" Gar waited for a response he wasn't certain would come. He turned and began walking through the exit. Once he was outside, he attempted to pinpoint where the collapse would occur. The now hat-less pirate grabbed his turquoise bandanna and tied it over his head in the usual fashion. He was ready for the work he was going to have to put in to get Aeos out of the rubble. He was also preparing himself to use sacrifice for the Nabatan in case he was injured. I haven't used sacrifice all that much. I'm still not used to it, but if there was ever a time to use that ability, its probably now.
The pirate exhaled and awaited the upcoming collapse.

Aeos ignored Gar’s plea’s. Now that he was half shifted he needed to take extra precautions not to let the sailor see him like this. In his “scaly lizard man” form. Aeos wasn't overly fond of this middle man, between both parts of himself. This part of himself was much more honest and not in the good way. A personality shift that geared more towards survival than making friends. Euphemious learned this first hand.
This form gave him more confidence in his own capabilities, perhaps to a fault. Aeos scratched his back and could feel the nubs of where his wings were supposed to be. He had not yet fully mastered all of his half shifting capabilities. But, he figured at this point the legs, hands, and face would be enough to help him escape this hole. The legs gave him better agility and jumping. The hands were now claws so he could grip things better. His facial features heighten his senses which would be useful in the upcoming collapse. While his face still looked mostly human, it was littered with several scales that seemed to come from his hairline, all the way up to his cheeks. His neck was also covered in skin colored scales. His hair line closest to his forehead seemed to have four little nubs that would be the precursor to his little dragon horns.
He gave a small grin as he looked at the box one last time. Two sharp little fangs could be seen in his grin that were not there previously. The dragon man relished the moment. All the spirits were around him waiting with baited breath. They wanted him to free them from this cursed place.
"Alright spirits! Let's make this exit look cool. I mean really cool!" The dragon man put the box on the slab and waited. The whole room started to glow with green light until it stopped suddenly. The wind was whipped up into a frenzy as the walls with all the runes started to crack. The runes were the seal holding this place together.
He laughed as the wind spirits clamored in all directions out of their prison via the nearest air vents. Above ground there was something that looked like a localized tornado happening. With sand and dust being whipped around everywhere. Aeos took this opportunity to fully shift and blast his way out of the ruins. A large eruption of sand and rock blew out from the underground. When the twister of sand and wind was at its highest only then did he fly out. He stayed in the middle of the funnel in order to hide his large form. One could almost hear him saying “whee!” in dragon. Provided, if their ears could get past the noises of the gusting winds. To him flying in the middle of a tornado that wasn't his own doing was probably the most awesome thing he could do. The spirits did not disappoint. His time was running out though. Soon, there would be no more spirits leaving the hole. So, he landed and let out a burst of wind magic from his body. In order to revitalize the sand screen before the sand storm of the spirits faded. He reshifted back into his human form. He was exhausted but happy.
And then the tornado, the whipping winds, of sand stopped. The sand and debris that was caught in the air came back down as quickly as it went up. Aeos covered his head so as to avoid having any falling rocks hit him. This did not stop him from getting half buried in falling sand.

Gar waited rather impatiently for Aeos to make his move underground. After shoving me out of the room like that, he better not be hesitating. The pirate's concern was answered by a pillar of wind that pierced the sky. Gar had never seen a tornado of this magnitude. It was tall enough and powerful enough to be seen from miles away. He was forced to dig his heels into the sand to prevent himself from being blown off balance. He also raised his arm in front of his face to keep the flying sand from hitting his eyes. Gar understood why the spirits were so excited. They were finally free after being imprisoned and forgotten for a long period of time. Anyone would want to make a scene of their freedom, apparently spirits were no different. Gar believed he heard some cheers of exhilaration from the wind spirits but he couldn't be sure. It could have just been the roars of a raging tornado.
Gar was relived that the spirits had obtained their freedom, but he had other things on his mind. The wind began dying down and Gar pressed into the tornado, moving slowly toward it's center. Sand was still whipping by his face and small pebbles pelted his chest and legs. Gar was able to pick up his pace as the wind stopped. He made his way to the location where the tornado once churned. Scanning the pit, Gar's eyes quickly fell upon a black haired man buried in the sand and rubble. The pirate let out a breath of relief. He wanted to be upset over the stunt Aeos pulled to get him out of the room, but he was truly thankful that Aeos was, for the most part alright. Gar descended into the pit, shoving smaller rocks out of the way as he moved. He reached his friend and knelt down to help out. The pirate had expected it to be a much more challenging rescue, but it seemed simple enough.
He began by shoving a couple rocks off of the Nabatan, then he dug aiming for one of the buried man's arms. Gar wrapped his hand around a forearm and pulled. He drove though his legs to lift Aeos out of the sand to a standing position. Gar patted Aeos on the back to brush off some grains of sand. "Glad you're okay mate. Looks to me like the spirits protected you in the collapse." While the conclusion Gar came to may not have been entirely correct, he was sincere about his relief. This meant he wouldn't have to use sacrifice. If he had, there were no guarantees he would have remained conscious. Being passed out in the desert is a quick way to lose a life.
Gar laughed out loud as he made a realization. "The treasure! We left it in the room and now it's buried deep." Gar shook his head, knowing they could try to dig it out. He didn't really want to do so. "Ehh Whatever, I'm content with the spirits being freed. What do ya say? We can just call it a successful treasure hunt and head back." They did find the treasure after all.

Aeos was pulled out of the sand by his sailor companion. He was still very happy over the whole situation. He was happiest when he was flying and as of right now he still felt like he was flying. He rolled his head over to look at Gar and he still had a grin on his face. The sailor had deduced that the spirits had protected him from the collapse. Oh.. If only you knew the truth! He was tempted to grab Gar and shake him a bit just out of sheer excitement and joy.
“Did you see that!? Did you see that whole twister.. And it went woosh! And.. and..” I was in the middle of it spinning and flying and...And it was great!
“And..and.. Gar.. i’m just so happy! The wind spirits were so happy! And ..and.. And..” And just like that the happy feeling that made him feel lighter than air had stopped. His body felt very heavy and found it difficult to stand. He found himself leaning on his companion. He suddenly realized that there was a very real chance that Gar might have gotten hurt in that tornado of wind and sand. All because the dragon wanted to have a moment of fun with wind spirits. Gar was close to the ruins and the twister, what would have happened had he been blown away? He found himself looking down into the sand. He noticed that he had lost his sandals somewhere in the landing. At least we didn’t crash this time.
“And.. I am missing my sandals?” He shook his head. Forget the sandals!
“No. I mean I am glad that you be alright. You saw.. You were close to all that!” Aeos tried to stand on his own two feet for a moment. Just so he could get a good look at Gar. Just to make sure he was okay. Mistake! His inner dragon quipped as almost immediately the dragon had fallen flat on his back into the sand. Ah.. Sand. Nature’s cushion. He lay there for a moment. Just letting everything sink in. They had done a good thing here today. He closed his eyes then started talking.
“Yes.. I agree we should be heading back. Soon. Just.. give me a moment to.. Recuperate. I.. only just realized now.. I was in a twister. Near a twister? Vertical sand storm? Something! Very mortally dangerous. It was exhilarating! But deadly! I..” He let out a deep sigh.
“I am sorry for throwing you out back there. There was no guarantee the spirits would have spared us both. They all seemed.. So.. excited to be free. Excitement leads to distraction to forgetfulness..” He took another deep breath then exhaled it. Slowly, he could feel his strength recovering.
“The sky.. Is so wonderful.” He blurted out without thought. He then opened his eyes and sat up. A gentle desert breeze passed over them.
“The spirits say thank you.” He spoke with a smile. He eventually pulled himself up out of the sand and back onto his two feet. He tapped himself to make sure the rest of his belongings were there. Surprisingly, Oscar was still firmly secure in his bag. Aeos chuckled at Gar’s mention of the treasure. Aeos had forgotten all about it in the fervor of the wind spirits.
“We did something nice for.. Other persons.. Er.. for other spirits. Things who are not us! That be better than any gem or golden jewel. There be a saying.. “What goes around comes around.” Who knows.. Maybe we will be rewarded later in the long term for this?” He shrugged. Then winced in pain. And.. Now the repercussions show themselves. He pressed his hand over one shoulder. He spent a lot energy keeping himself airborne in the middle of the twister. And the spirits were whipping around in every which way, this made it difficult for him to keep himself in a steady position. He didn’t realize it then just how hard he was flapping his wings to stay in the air. But, now his arms and neck were sore from the experience. He eventually started to walk and eventually stood alongside Gar. His feet stepped on something hard. At first he dismissed it as a rock but it wasn’t jagged like the rubble rock. The dragon man bent down and fished it out with his hands. He found his sandals. Yay! No trial of the feet! Stuck to one of them was a silver bracelet with a gem attached to it. Aeos didn’t know much about gem’s and stones but this one had a pretty blue color. He removed the bracelet from the sandals, then pressed the silver object into Gar’s hand. Then he went about putting on his sandals. He wriggled his toes a bit, happy for his shoes.
“A successful treasure hunt indeed.”

Aeos emerged from the sand better than alright, he was delirious with excitement. The happiness was so infectious Gar couldn’t help but smile alongside the Nabatan. It was a cheerful scene. The two had both been in danger, but made it out without any major harm. All the while, they had helped those in need. The duo had accomplished something great this day and Gar held a strong notion of pride. “Aye I caught most of it. Remarkable.” The pirate raised an eyebrow and let out a chuckle. Aeos had lost his sandals and hadn’t even noticed until now. Gar almost spoke to poke fun at the shoeless man, but he lost his train of thought as Aeos fell to the ground.
Gar wasn’t too worried, from what Aeos was saying, he was just tired. “I guess being in the middle of a tornado can make you a bit dizzy. Loopy even.” Gar laughed at his light-hearted remark. Aeos spoke of the spirits how they gave the two their thanks. Gar looked around, unsure of how to communicate back with the invisible presence. “Uhh no problem. Just be careful not to get locked away again. I won’t be around in another hundred years to save you next time.” Gar smirked and listened to Aeos recite the classic saying. “What goes around comes around. These wind spirits must know all about that. With their tornadoes and all.” Gar laughed again, he thought this was one of his better quips.
Gar was getting ready to begin their trek back to the small village when Aeos bent down to recover his sandals. Aeos then placed a silver bracelet into Gar’s palm. Gar brought it closer to his face to inspect it. It was a nice piece of work, silver inlaid with a blue gem. Gar smiled, blue was his favorite color. It had to be with how much time he spent out at sea. Just seeing the blue kindled his desire of getting back to the coast. The pirate had left his map behind, but he remembered the way back for the most part.
The duo retraced their steps to the village. Leaving the spirit's tomb and passing the boulder of faces, they walked. Eventually, they made it back to the town. The shop-keep looked concerned that Gar had already lost the hat he had purchased. The pirate couldn’t do much else but shrug at the man. The shop-keep spoke out to Gar as they made their way past. “Were you out there with that tornado? Shame you had to return with nothing.”
“I wouldn’t say nothing. It’s just something more spiritual.” Gar smiled and said his goodbyes to his friend. The two agreed they would meet again. Gar wished his friend good luck and departed out to sea.
