Story:
Giles was born in Laus and raised by two merchants of middling income. The two were a part of a merchant guild, which had Gil’s father travel quite often, leaving his mother alone to care for the young boy. Gil grew up as a healthy, headstrong boy. There were times while his father was away that townspeople would make passes at his mother. Gil had no tolerance for the disrespect and would speak his mind to these men, often to get ignored. His mother claimed to be able to take care of herself, but was still thankful for Giles’ concern.
Aside from his education, Gil’s parents had him trained in martial arts from a young age. Gil complained that it was pointless, quite literally, when he said hand to hand combat didn’t matter when enemies have weapons. Gil had dreams of being a glorious soldier, but was far too young to begin training, so he had to settle for swinging brooms and sticks throughout his youth. Until the day eventually came when he could sign up and join the army. The boy’s entry into the ranks without prior service landed him the role of a recruit, where he began his training with a lance. Many members of the knighthood treated Giles as more of a glorified servant or worse. Giles was capable enough to withstand the work given to him and eventually the time came for battle.
Recruit: The bandit wars came. With only a few weeks of arms training, he was given a lance and an ill fitted helm to engage the enemy on the front lines. Gil was nowhere near battle ready, but did manage to survive his first few engagements with luck. It was more than a couple times that it was all he could do to keep an enemy at bay until he could be saved by a more proficient soldier. It was rough for the young man to always have to be protected. He felt as if the day would never come that the role would be reversed.
Gil would keep these feelings of inadequacy to himself throughout the rest of his first tour in combat. The young Gil struggled through this time, but eventually emerged as a slightly more seasoned combatant.
Knight: After his first few battles were completed, Gil returned to Laus for more official training. He had a choice to make. Would he become an armor knight or a cavalier? Although the stories of his youth depicted heroic cavaliers, Gil found it more practical to become an armored knight. It was at this time that other members of the Laus knights became more respectful and friendly. Gil eventually encountered a man who would not only become a strong training partner, but a best friend. The man went by the name of August.
August and Giles returned to the front lines in order to bolster Laus’ strength. The two worked together to defeat their enemies. Bandits crumpled before the knight duo. That is until they got pinned down in a fort. There was only one option, make a break for the main castle. Gil agreed to do it, alone. Once in the castle, the knight realized he was there as a puppet. He alone was an aggressor that would provoke the small country to retaliate against Laus. August moved in defense of his friend. He met the enemy in the battlefield against his orders. Gil and August fought off the incursion. All and all, Gil and August survived, but only one of the two was an insubordinate.
While Gil got the honor and accolades, August left the knighthood in disgrace. It was an unknown suicide mission that Gil managed to survive. This “exemplary” act of “valiance” gave Gil the opportunity to become a royal guard and protect the Marquess of Laus.
Great Knight: Gil was aware he was deceived and still, against his better judgement agreed to be raised up to a royal guard of Marquess Francis Revelin. He loyally served at the Marquess’ side for seven years, without trouble. He continued his training daily with drills in lance work and riding. Eventually, the time came to get some new blood in the royal knights, and Gil was asked to leave the knighthood. Gil did not take this happily. He served Laus and its Marquess for the majority of his life and now that there were some promising younger knights, he was being removed. Gil departed by throwing his royal armor at the feet of Marquess Revelin and stormed off. He later came to the conclusion that he possessed no other skills aside from protecting, so he bought a new set of armor, one that he thought reflected his worth, and started a new practice of being a bodyguard.
Bodyguard: After a few years of work as a bodyguard, he has started to recapture his sense of self-worth.
