Elesia hummed a little tune as cleaned off the mantle with the rag Hal's mom had given her, head bobbing back and forth a bit as she worked and thought and dreamed and hoped. There was usually more important stuff to do, or at least more important stuff to NOT do in her case, but this was the big day, and mom said everything had to look as good as possible. The queen of ash and cinder - Elesia was still working on the title but it sounded pretty appropriately cool - privately thought it would probably be fine to just sorta clean and throw the rest in a closet or something, but she didn't mind helping out and mom's enthusiasm for cleaning had been infectious. Like the black plague, but worse. Even Destiny had gotten pulled into it, though her mopping was uh, well, Elesia had a feeling she was going to get stuck cleaning up after that.
It was kind of weird to be doing his, but the last, uh, however long it had been, a few months at least she thought, had been pretty strange in general, and she'd learned to do a lot of things she hadn't thought she would. There weren't really any great and terrible threats to fight, except for spiders but seriously f*** spiders, so she'd taken the time to try to learn a bit more about magic, both her own and in general, and spent a lot of time thinking about what had happened when she and Hal came here, and also spent a lot of time helping out to make Hal's mom's job easier.
If she had been entirely herself when Hal left, she might have refused to not leave with him, but at the time she had been - well. It had been sorta hard at the time, and the idea of taking a step back and trying to figure things out had seemed like a good idea at the time. And she was glad she had, honestly, Elesia had to admit to herself, but she couldn't stay here forever. She hadn't really been able to advance her magic much without anything really suitable to practice it against - a small village in a forest wasn't really the best place for explosive fire magic, leaving her to try to figure out her wind magic. She hadn't realized it initially, really, but at least she knew that much now, and had some basic ideas of how to use it.
...She still didn't know what exactly to make of everything in general, but getting her head cleared out had prepared her for what came next. Probably. Hopefully. But they still had some time until Hal got home so for now, it was cleaning time. Ughhh. She hated the suds, they always made her hands all wrinkly afterwards. But she could hear other people in the house doing their work too, and while in most situations she would have used the opportunity of aloneness to skeedaddle on out, she owed mom and Hal enough to stick with it... for now.

The past few months Hal had kept to his word, or returning home every once in a while to see his family. This time though, he was going to have to break part of the promise and leave sooner than he normally would. He has been trying his hardest to keep track of events in his head, it would have been easier if he knew how to read and write so he could have done it that way. If his guesstimations were correct, what he had planned was quickly approaching. His excitement levels were... How would Elesia put it? More than a bear who discovered how to make fire. As silly as it sounded, it would probably be true.
He had made one final stop, when he was about half a day's ride away from home. He had made sure polish his armor extra good and make sure there was no wrinkles in his cape and have his hair trimmed a little. That way his mom wouldn't worry about him. The last time he forgot to do that she nearly "had cubs", which he sore Elesia said when his mom freaked out.
Once that was all out of the way he had finally made it to his home town, a bit earlier than normal. Normally he would see Sol patrolling the skies, keeping an eye out for him but not this time. Hal had entered his home with only his youngest sibling seeing him. He quickly brought a finger to his mouth and made a 'shhhhh' sound as he made his way to the chair his father use to always sit on. Picking Becky up he sat her on his lap as she hugged him. "MOM, I'M HUNGRY, WHAT'S FOR SUPPER?" He called out.

To her eternal credit, Elesia actually managed to catch the vase she had been manhandling (girlhandling?) a moment before when someone started yelling in the house, her surprise only barely overwhelmed by her reflexes. Or maybe it was the other way around... or just dumb luck. Honestly, probably that last one. Nonetheless, she had the presence of mind to put it back on the shelf and re-adjust whatever dumb flower plant thing was in it while trying to place the voice, she hadn't actually been paying attention and usuall Hal's mom didn't shout... much... and the kid made other sounds.
Waaaaaaaitaminnit...
"haaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL" came the banshee wail of a green-tinged ghost possessed of truly impressive vocal chords and very little understanding of an 'indoor voice,' her volume picking up both itself and as she dashed through the house on wings of wind - not literally, though she was working on that - and burst into the kitchen like a bear that had just been told there was honey. Actually literally burst in, there may have been some unconscious wind magic involved, 'cuz the curtains were swooshing like hell in her wake and her idea of braking involved, well, not stopping at Hal, though not for lack of effort! Waving as she passed him, skidding on the floor and lightly thumping into the naked wall in that direction a moment later, she catapulted off of it to encircle Hal in a squishy hug from behind.
"Hiiii welcome back!" She giggled in girlish glee, completely beside herself in excitement at the development of the day. It had been a while and she had been lonelier than she was willing to admit, at first the idea of taking some time to 'just live' had seemed like a good idea but the longer she stayed the more Elesia had come to realize that she didn't belong there - she loved Hal's family with the sort of immature childishness that was required to use the word so easily, but the stillness and... non-progress of town life was simply not for her. She had to be DOING something, getting somewhere with her life, to actually feel like she was accomplishing anything these days.
It was a bit of a far cry from how she had been in the forest, content to simply live, but that had been before Elesia learned just how big and complicated and beautiful and sometimes ugly the world was. There was so much to learn and so little time to see it all, and while she had made reasonably good use of her time here, she didn't want to keep doing it much longer. But she'd break that subject to Hal later. For now, she was just happy to see him. With her face nuzzling the back of his head - possibly searching for fleas in his hair, possibly looking for worms to eat, possibly just being affectionate, Elesia continued with a giggle. "Heehee. How was your trip? I missed you!"

The way Hal's mom, Elanor, described Elesia wasn't something a normal person would do about another human, but Elesia was a special case. There was an improvement when it came to Elesia's manners, Elanor wasn't sure if Elesia was simply mimicking her or had actually learned a thing or two about being a lady but she was sure of one thing. Once Hal came home, all of that went out of the window. She would say Elesia was like a puppy who missed it's master and went haywire when they returned.
Hal let out a laugh watching Elesia enter the room, it was a sight that wouldn't get old any time soon. It didn't take the girl long to start to circle him like a pack of hungry wolfs before almost pouncing on him from behind with a hug. "I'm happy to see you too." He said before reaching above him, placing his hand on the girl's head ruffling up her hair a bit. "It was okay I guess. I would be lying if I said I missed you as much as you missed me, that would be impossible, but I did come back for a reason." He would have normally tried to stand up to he could return Elesia's hug but he knew he couldn't break free from her grasp just yet.
"Guess what? I have a surprise for you." He figured Elesia would never ever guess what it was, not in a million years. Watching her try to figure it out or search him from head to toe would be his entertainment for the time being.

"Ehehe!" Blissfully unaware of any comparisons to over-affectionate puppies that would probably have drawn an impassioned and outraged response from the sometimes hyperactive little mage, Elesia was free to act the part perfectly with absolutely no self-awareness whatsoever, leaning into the head-patting without reserve. Not that surprising that she might be starving for a bit of affection given her history and how long Hal had been gone. Hal's mother was kind enough and the remainder of the family was tolerable too, but it was real nice to have a familiar presence to bask in.
Unfortunately FOR HAL, Elesia the great detective - she had read a book about some guy named Sherlock Homie the other day and was now convinced she had supreme deductive powers - was on the case. "A surprise?" Let's see... surprises. What did Hal surprise her with? Uhh... books, clothes, flesh eating zombies, more zombies, even more zombies... Hm. You could almost notice a pattern there, if you looked hard enough. "Is it zombies? Wait, no, that would be too obvious I was just um testing you." Of course he wouldn't make it that simple for her. Hmm... "It's food, right? It's TOTALLY food you can't hide it from me I will find it!"
She wasn't actually sure if Hal had it on him, but it didn't stop her from immediately frisking him nonetheless, hunting for the promised paradise within her grasp. Never mind that she didn't smell it, it was there somewhere, right? Yeah, it had to be, that was how these games worked. But it wasn't THERE. She stepped back, deep in thought as the hamster-in-a-wheel in her mind slowly took a few steps forward. "Wait, you hid it somewhere else, didn't you?" Yes, Hal was crafty, but she was kraftier yet. Yes, kraftier. Krafty-er? It was a new word she had invented that was even more clever than crafty. OBVIOUSLY he would know she would know, which meant she had to know what he knew that she didn't know, so - wait, crap, she was getting confused again.

Elesia had seemed to enjoy him patting her head, he dept doing it, then suddenly she had exploded with excitement of hearing he had a surprise for her. Her first guess was zombies, seeing those vile things again was on the list of nope for him. Her second guess was food, both guesses were wrong but linked to an extant. She began to frisk him, Hal letting out a laugh when her hands passed his stomach, and a couple other ticklish spots on the boy.
She deducted that he didn't have it on his person, which was correct but it wasn't simply something he could just give her. Hal rolled his eyes. "I guess you're sorta right. I don't have it with me, we'd have to travel to get it." He paused for a moment. "Tomorrow. Or maybe in a couple of days, it's not going anywhere and I'm beat." Hal rose to his feet to look at Elesia then wrapped his arms around her to give her a hug. It was only fair, she basically had him in a choke hold the moment she came running into the room. "You've been on your 'bestestist' behavior right?" Hal was trying to imitate the way Elesia would speak.
His mom stood in the door way drying her hands watching the two with a smile on her face. "Just remember Hal, I'm too young to be a grandma." That caused Hal to blush as he let go of Elesia and mumble under his breath. "We're just friends..." Avoiding eye contact with Elesia now he asked her a question. "Did you help with making supper? Should I have ate before coming home?" Looking at his mom he told her the two would be leaving either tomorrow or the day after.

Wait, was that the first time Hal had actually hugged HER? She couldn't remember, which wasn't really a big surprise considering Elesia rarely remember what she'd had for breakfast the day before much less 'important' crap, but that did seem kinda important at least. Or maybe not. Maybe he gave hugs to ALL the girls.
Whatever the case, she didn't mind the idea of walking to see it, which wasn't exactly unusual given that Elesia had no issues whatsoever with exercise and got as much as she could get away with regularly... just not intentionally. She would have looked at you blankly if you suggested pushups and workouts. She was just active as heck darn diddly doo and had more than enough youthful energy to fuel an entire Bernese invasion. "I been acting real good, right? Right?" She looked askance at everyone in the room but didn't bother with such minor, irrelevant concerns as giving them a chance to answer. "AND I got to learn more about magic too! Did you know they have LOTS of books about that stuff? I only ever got to read one before but - but - there are these things called Spirits that make magic, or maybe they let you use it, I forget, and there are a bunch of elements like fire - that was the book you got me right? And I found out some more about wind too, and there's... uh, anyways." The blank stares weren't really something even she could totally ignore.
"Yep," Elesia agreed brightly instead, smiling guilelessly at Hal's mom in her own uniquely clueless way. "Grandmas are old people, and you're not old, so you can't be a grandma yet!" Flawless logic. She nodded to herself in satisfaction, though... hmm. Her smile dimmed a bit as Elesia worked through the snag in her thoughts, realizing what it was after a few agonizing moments of not knowing what it was. Duh! "But I don't get what Hal and me have to do with that?" She looked between Hal and the older woman in hopes of an answer. Maybe Hal knew?

Hal began to blush hard at Elesia's innocence of not knowing what his mom had said. To try to hide it he began to remove his armor, wrapping the cape around it as he gently set it on the floor next to the chair he was sitting on moments ago. Elanor has confirmed that Elesia hadn't been causing any trouble what so ever. "That's good to hear." Hal said as he stood up straight again, turning to Eleisa "Maybe I'll explain it to you later." He never thought about having to give the 'birds and the bees' talk to anybody, especially to one that was close to his own age.
Hal could typically 'fake it till he makes' it with most subjects with Elesia but magic was one of them he couldn't. "Spirits huh? Maybe you can tell me more about them while we're on our trip." Hal's mom began to usher a couple of his younger siblings to the cabinets. "Supper is almost ready, I'll have the little ones set the table. You must be wore out after your trip back." As she left the room Hal plopped back down on the chair as the kids began to scurry around to set the table as he looked up towards Elesia. "So, on a scale of one to ten, how excited are you to see what this surprise is?"

"Yea, you /better/ explain it," Elesia shot back, staring at her counterpart suspiciously. Obviously there was some great secret here - an Adult Conspiracy of sorts, if Hal's mom was in on it too - and the great detective-queen Elesia refused to accept the idea that maybe there were things she was not meant to know. The world was her oyster, whatever the heck that meant, she wasn't really sure but had read it in a book recently and thought it sounded cool. Anyways, the point was that she deserved everything ever and depriving her of her rights was basically the same thing as murder if not worse since SHE was the real victim here.
But she did have just enough self-awareness to not push the subject further, or at least that was what she would claim to her deathbed. In reality Elesia just got distracted by Hal's mention of spirits and the sudden burst of activity in the room as his mom started doing dinner stuff. Unfortunately, the woman made the fatal mistake of NOT dragging Elesia away to help this time, which meant she obviously didn't help and instead just continued pestering Hal, hovering around him like an omen of death. Or derp. Maybe a little of both. She nodded sagely(?), smiling happily as she did. Hal's mom was nice, but she didn't really do the magic thing and wasn't as big about adventuring either, so it was nice to have someone to talk to about this stuff. "Spirits are super cool. And I'm super excited!"
No deception there; Elesia stated her thoughts with the guileless simplicity of a child, her eagerness and honesty evident in her voice. "Surprises are always... well, usually fun, and if you think it's a good one it's definitely a good one!" Unless the surprise was that he was going to murder her, in which case it wasn't a really good one. But Hal seemed pretty hype about it so she figured it had something to do with food, magic, or heroism. Maybe all three. At once! "C'mon, gimme a hint!"

Hal wasn't sure how to react to the suspicious look Elesia was giving him. He was sure his mom hasn't given all of his siblings 'the talk'. He was almost 100 percent positive if he did she would be dead set on playing 'show me yours, I'll show you mine' or something like that, something he didn't want to do in front of the kids.
Luckily his question had very quickly changed the subject from where babies come from to magic, even though it was momentarily before wanting a hint about her surprise.
He put some serious thought into the hint, he knew he had to give her something or else she wouldn't stop asking for one. The real question is what to tell her that wouldn't straight out say what it is, he could mention Sol but seeing the number of places the three have gone could be counted on a single hand. They've been to one festival and it was the surprise so he couldn't say that, then he had an idea.
"Okay, here you go." He said as he reached over and grabbed her hand and just held it. He remembered when they got to the crowd of people she had became scared of it and he held her hand to comfort her. "That's the only hint you're getting." Moments later his mom returned with a large pot filled with some kind of ground meat, tomato based sause with some sort of spices and seasonings, and noodles. She knew it was Hal's favorite, she had made it knowing he should be coming home soon and hoped he got home that day.
