There wasn't a whole lot to be said about Bulgar, generally. It was loud, crowded, and populated far beyond reasonable limits with shops, restaurants, and peddlers, and none of them were subtle about their wares. There wasn't a whole lot for Leiva to complain about, however; considering the fact that her mentor had recently informed her that she would need to steal her own meals. And it was now that the novice had found herself inside of one of these bustling shops, one with the noise and crowd. She wasn't entirely used to stealing regularly, and often found herself brushing by just the wrong person or, in the worst case scenario, someone noticing her blatant larceny. Still, she had been doing well lately; she'd had a few close calls at this point, but none of them were unable to be salvaged. A block of cheese here, a fresh apple there, and all Leiva found herself lacking for her impromptu meal was a loaf of bread. But then, as she observed the bustling outfit of the general store, she caught sight of a small stand that contained entirely fresh loaves of bread. Perfect. The kiosk was left unattended, making it the perfect target. The novice meandered towards the stand, quickly grabbing the hottest, most appealing looking loaf and shoving it into her cloak along with the rest of the food. After that, she swiftly rushed away from the stand before anybody, especially the clerk, could walk by and notice her shenanigans. It wasn't extremely graceful, but Leiva had been sure that nobody had seen her crime.

Yanno, running away from home to go be the hero of time and find your own way? Sounds a lot better in your head beforehand than when you're standing there with all the time in the world to think twice about it and a heaping headful of second thoughts swirling around the drain of regret. Heh. Kisaragi allowed herself something of a tiny smile, in equal parts amused, impressed, and repulsed by her newfound poetic nature. Apparently she waxed eloquent under stress... just not verbally.
In all seriousness though, while it was true that she was having something... resembling second thoughts, she didn't regret what she had done. Dad would understand, even if he wouldn't be happy about it - or maybe he would be, he was so god damn SUPPORTIVE it made her feel bad sometimes - but the excitement of being out on her own for once was heady nonetheless. For better or for worse, life or death, she was now stuck dealing with her own problems without anyone there to fix them for her. Not actually that new to her, she was pretty well used to having to be the one to do that, but there had always been the fallback. If she wasn't strong enough, dad was. If she couldn't figure out how to plug a whole, another villager could. They helped each other. Trusted each other. She loved them, respected it - but she had to find out if she could REALLY do all that stuff on her own, or just thought she could.
Bulgar itself was a god damn shithole though. She'd been here before a few times for shopping, but wandering around it purposely now, just watching people and things, was a bit overwhelming. But interesting. Kisaragi wasn't really used to being around so many people, or being alone, so it had her a little on edge. Not ready for trouble, exactly, just ready for... something. She didn't really know what. Maybe it was trouble. She sure as hell couldn't track everything going on around her, on the distant off chance that someone DID have a couple feet of steel aimed at her butt there might not be time to react, but it was mostly just the weird sense of claustrophobia. But if she knew what it was, she could handle it. She wasn't scared or angry. Just... alert.
Even with that said though, the Sacaen very nearly missed the events at the stall, and would have entirely if not for her second and then third thoughts on the subject. At first she just noticed it unconsciously. Then: does that girl work there? Then: not likely. Not looking that suspicious.
Fundamentally incapable of NOT getting involved in things that were none of her god damn beeswax, Kisaragi intercepted the pink-haired girl as she crossed at an angle, grabbing the hooligan's left arm as she passed in... well, if she was four years and forty pounds heavier it would have been an iron grip, as-is it was really just the fairly solid grip of a teenage girl who was used to a lifetime of hard labor. So definitely a lot more than you'd expect.
"That doesn't belong to you."
It was... difficult for a 16 year old girl to sound intimidating, exactly, and she didn't exactly have a uniquely deep voice to make her sound like a gravely badass, but there was a definite edge to the swordswoman's blunt tone. She didn't care much for thieves at all, and she didn't plan to stand by idly as some baker's work went to waste.

A clean getaway, sure. Way to jinx it, Leiva. A thousand thoughts ran through the novice's head as her arm was gripped by the young woman. Run? Explain? Sass? All of these options comparable in effectiveness, but at any rate, she needed to decide fast. She turned her head and looked up at her keen-eyed captor, her face swiftly growing indignant. The novice violently wrestled her arm out of the woman's grasp with notable difficulty. stumbling backward into another stall, narrowly avoiding toppling it completely. She had been holding it harder than the young thief had anticipated. Leiva crossed her arms under her large cloak with a huff and shifted her weight, delivering a sassy glare straight at the woman who had intercepted her. She thought once more for a moment, several witty retorts running through her mind, but she figured it would be unwise to antagonize her captor any further than she already had. "So? Why do you care?" Outright admittance might not have been the most advisable strategy, but maybe the lady would turn the other cheek. It wasn't often that Bulgarians took particular notice to thieves, unless it was their own pockets that were being emptied. The novice could only hope that she could get off scott-free on this assumption, but she wasn't entirely confident. She kept light on her feet, ready to run should the other call the guards. The novice didn't feel like the woman would go to such lengths, but she needed to cover all of her options. Upon closer inspection, Leiva had come to the realization that her initial assumption of the woman was incorrect; she couldn't have been too much older than the apprentice thief. She was taller than Leiva, that was for sure, and definitely stronger, but Leiva was sure that she could be faster if she absolutely had to. Aside from her physique, the girl was certainly striking in terms of appearance, at least to the would-be thief, especially with that garish kimono. Unfortunately, the clothing complemented the girl's appearance, and Leiva would be loath to admit that it made her slightly envious. "There are lots of thieves in Bulgar. I'm just one more. Besides, I need to eat."

"Whoever runs that stall needs to eat too," Kisaragi fired back with all the subtlety and restraint of a dragon falling out of the sky. She wasn't quite angry, but it was very close. Unwilling to back down, the swordswoman crossed her arms contentiously as well, temporarily satisfied that she wasn't going to be attacked and murdered just yet, though she trusted the pink haired girl about as far as she could throw her. And while the Sacaen was reasonably strong for her size, she didn't exactly have super strength going for her. So it wasn't THAT surprising that the little thief managed to wrest free by surprise, though wisely didn't try to run.
It was the brazen defiance that equally infuriated and confused her though. Rather than pleading or trying to excuse her actions, the thief saw nothing wrong with what she had done. No question of morality whatsoever, or of whether she SHOULD have done it. Only that she could, so she had. It took Kisaragi a little off guard for a moment, but did little to quell her feelings on the subject. "You're not a child anymore. You could earn a good meal easily if you worked for it. Whoever owns that shop is working for his livelihood - it's not a victimless crime." It wasn't exactly a subtle critique of Leiva's actions, more a hammer blow of morality mixed with a bit of logic.
The girl didn't even look any older than her. Maybe that was what struck Kisaragi the most. It was sort of like looking at herself in a broken mirror, something that she herself could have been if not raised right, and that bothered her a lot more than if it had been some six year old street rat. She would never condone thievery, but... well, honestly, she definitely wouldn't turn them in or cause a ruckus. Maybe that was betraying her ideals, but no kid deserved to have their lives ruined further just for trying to survive. Kisaragi wasn't exactly a philosopher or big on justifying wickedness, but even she could understand the difference between a murder and stealing to survive when you didn't have any other options. But this... girl HAD other options, she was sure of it. She was fast and clever and defiant enough to forge her own path if she was willing to. But she just... stole instead. The Sacaen could hardly encompass the idea. "Is it really worth the risk of ruining your life for some free food if you could earn it instead?"

Alright, avoiding conflict be damned, this girl was getting on Leiva's nerves. What was it with the novice and meeting people who couldn't comprehend the concept of checking your mouth before you spout trash from it? She couldn't tell, but what she did know was that this girl's high-and-mighty lecture on how she should make her own way in the world was clearly making the assumption that Leiva knew how to do that at all; she had lived her entire life stealing to survive. That was what she was good at, and here this privileged know-nothing was telling her that she couldn't make a living off of the only talent she could have the inclination to build up, having been an orphan for her entire life and all that. She found heat building up in her cheeks and around her ears as her anger flared, but she decided to express it in a more subtle way than she had in the past, knowing that screaming and trying to fight would be all but suicidal in a crowded setting such as this. Instead, the novice rolled her eyes and raised her arm up by her head, flapping her four fingers and thumb together in a blah-blah-blah motion. "Oh, yeah, I'm sorry. I guess I'll just go walk right up to some shop owner and go, 'hey, you wanna hire a dirty, crippled little girl to work at your shop? It'll be great for business!' That's cute," Leiva practically spat. Clearly the young lady had no concept of what working to get by was; apparently, she thought that stealing to get by wasn't work. The sentiment only served to further Leiva's anger at the situation, and it was getting harder by the minute to not sock the girl upside the head and make a dash for the nearest exit. Still, though, she restrained herself, knowing fully that that might get her arrested, or possibly worse. The novice crossed and recrossed her arms, still staring at the other with an irritated look, her eyebrows raised slightly and her eyes one-third of the way lidded. Leiva almost couldn't believe that somebody could be this ignorant. Well, maybe one other person, but that was another thing to be mad about for another time.

Okaaaaay then. Kisaragi had seen a number of ways this conversation might go. She had kinda expected pleading, was more or less prepared for a surprise attack - at least as far as she could be - and wouldn't have been that surprised if the little thief just made a run for it. Pretty normal fight or flight type responses, depending on how emotional or rational the girl was. She hadn't expected weapon usage, but it had come to mind, she just hoped it didn't happen. She was fairly confident in her own swordplay and speed, admittedly not as much strength compared to a guy but it wasn't like the pink menace was a hulking mass of man-muscle either.
The myrmidon definitely hadn't been expecting Hurricane 'Tude to strike like the fist of an angry god, Leiva apparently incredibly offended by the suggestion that she... try to contribute to society instead of leeching off of it. Grateful that she was more of a tasteful combination of purple and pink rather than some garish pink blob of nerves, Kisaragi found that she was actually quite annoyed, to the surprise of absolutely no one. The GALL of this... child. The ironic part of it all was that in her sarcasm laid the truth - Kisaragi had done exactly that and had it go well enough for her. The fact that the other girl thought it was so nonsensical it was worth mocking was either a testament to her lack of actually trying it, or a very, very different upbringing indeed.
"You'd be surprised how well that works if you actually put your heart into it," Kisaragi returned bluntly, managing to... restrain the urge to add any unnecessary insults to the statement. She was still on edge, ready to move if needed, but as long as the girl didn't attack her she wouldn't start anything herself. Honestly, while she certainly wasn't liable to tell the girl that, she wouldn't have chased if the thief had run off - the damage was done and maybe she really did need the food that bad - but at this point she just wanted to try to understand the diseased mindset that had warped her into thinking it was actually ok to steal, not just a necessary evil. Kisaragi was a bit unimaginative when it came to morality but she could understand crimes of necessity, or of emotion. Not so much malice. And malice was all she could really see Leiva's position coming from. "I'm not trying to tell you how to live your damn life, I just don't see why you'd choose to hurt other people for your own benefit if you have a choice."
Admittedly, calling the girl "you" was starting to grate on her, Kisaragi liked to call people by name when possible, but she had the distinct feeling that asking for a name probably wouldn't go very well at this point.

Ugh. Leiva's own feelings had begun to feel redundant to even her, the other girl's endless lectures on the virtues of working for what you have grating in the novice's ears. I mean, Christ; it almost sounded like the girl wanted Leiva to give back to life in some way, as if she owed the world for something, but that was, in fact, the largest load of horse waste the would-be thief had ever heard. She had been everybody's punching bag since the very beginning, and rage sparked inside of her every time she thought of her village's destruction or her abandoning at the hands of her parents. Even disregarding the fact that Leiva had never not been bitter for as long as she could remember, she was frail and weak. With a frame like hers, she'd be lucky if she grew to be taller than 5'2", and finding decent work when you have the proportions of a particularly beefy piece of bark was difficult, to say the least. It wasn't as if she had tried, of course, but still; it was so ingrained into her mind by nobody but herself that she wasn't wanted that she figured the only way she could get anything would be to take it. And she would, because it was what she was good at, anybody else be damned. There was something funny about this whole thing, though. In that bitter way, where it's not truly funny but you laugh because it's so disappointing that you can't help yourself. Leiva couldn't pinpoint it exactly, but it was something in the myrmidon's mannerisms, the way that she spoke and how she kept fire just behind her eyes as the two infuriated each other more and more. The novice would be loath to admit it, but she knew that if something in her life had gone just a little bit right in some way or another, she could've been more like the other girl than anyone, even herself, would think. And that made her very, very mad. She didn't think anything was wrong with herself; sure, she stole and everything, but it wasn't out of malice. She was no worse than this holier-than-thou girl in terms of morals, and convincing her otherwise would be a nightmare. A glare flashed across Leiva's face momentarily, her grip on her crossed arms tightening for a moment. "You know what? I don't even know why I'm talking to you right now. I've got better things to do than explain myself to somebody who doesn't know crap about me." She huffed and tried to calm herself down, taking deep breaths and normalizing her expression. After a short silence, she spoke again. "But I guess, if you care, my name's Leiva. I think if we hadn't gotten off to such an awful start, we coulda been friends."

She bit back the urge to agree with Leiva. It WAS a fair question, honestly; Leiva certainly wasn't doing herself any favors by arguing with her instead of getting the hell out of there. And they certainly weren't going to agree on anything apparently, that much was becoming clear, as if it hadn't been crystal obvious from the first few seconds of their interaction. For... whatever reason, the thief had a hell of a chip on her shoulder and an attitude to match, and apparently didn't take well to the concept of morality, or not screwing other people over. Kisaragi wasn't entirely a country girl, but she definitely wasn't familiar enough with the big city, especially its darker side, to really have been exposed to it much before, so it was a bit new to her.
Not that that did anything to quell the righteous indignation angle of course, Kisaragi wasn't THAT good at introspection. But at the same time, it was... not that bad to just stand there and have an arguing match with someone. Sort of like a fight, but with less murdering and and the subtlety of a charging bull coming from either of them. She could stand there arguing all day if she had to in order to win. That all said, it wasn't like Leiva was really hurting herself by returning the favor either, though giving her name was... probably not the smartest thing a thief could ever do. It didn't occur to Kisaragi that OBVIOUSLY it would be a fake name, she just took it at face value. Almost said something about it too, off the cuff, before realizing how... silly it would be to lecture Leiva on that subject too.
"Look, I'm... sorry," the Sacaen forced out with visible effort, trying to reign in her own frustration as she recognized that she may have gone a little overboard. "You're right, I don't know anything about you." Not that that made stealing acceptable, or that she was going to just frickin' congratulate Leiva on doing it. But MAYBE there was some sort of good reason for it, even if she couldn't think of one and Leiva certainly didn't seem interested in offering it. "But I couldn't stand by when-" Her hesitation was palpable, pronounced, before Kisaragi swallowed her words and continued on a different tack. She wasn't going to get anything accomplished here apparently, and the little myrmidon was a practical sort of girl. If she actually realized she was wasting her time, not a sure thing given her stubbornness, she wasn't going to keep at it forever for some fancy moral reason. "Name's Kisaragi. I'm, uh, not from around here."
She couldn't tell if Leiva was actually trying to be decent or just lull her into a false sense of security, but Kisaragi generally assumed the best of people and didn't always think twice about her actions, so she took the bait(?) and extended one arm with a nervous smile, the wind taken out of her sails in terms of yelling at Leiva at this point. If nothing else at least it was easy to tell where you stood with her, in equal parts a strength and a weakness.

Leiva cocked an eyebrow. She certainly didn't have a hard time believing that Kisaragi wasn't form around here; hell, Leiva had only been an active resident of the city for a short while, but she already knew the ropes enough to know that bothering thieves was going to get you stabbed, mugged, killed, or anything in between, so it struck Leiva as strange that the other young lady didn't have a true grasp as to how to act in such a large city. But, aside from that strangeness, the novice could see that it was nearly physically painful to Kisaragi not to lecture her further, which, from what Leiva had seen, was definitely in-character for the girl. It also appeared that the young lady was actually content with making discussion with the novice, which surprised Leiva. She thoroughly expected Kisaragi to sling more self-righteous drivel at her, despite her own best efforts to diffuse the situation. Needless to say, the fact that the novice had seemed to calm the situation relatively well came as a relief to her. Maybe now they could discuss something like rational human beings, and, if Leiva was lucky, she could get away with her dinner still intact. And, of course, herself unarrested. "I can believe it." It had never really occurred to the novice to use a pseudonym when being confronted by someone who maintained that stealing was unacceptable no matter the context, and Leiva cursed herself for it. Now, should the conversation go awry once more, she would have almost no capability to defend herself against the guards, or possibly even Kisaragi herself. She eyed the other girl warily, still unsure of their temporary truce. She couldn't believe that that had worked. "I'm sorry too. I guess." The novice thought for a moment. An idea took its place in her head, a small grin spreading across her lips. "Hey, you said you're not from around here, huh? Well, if you wanted, I could show you how to keep all your stuff from getting stolen. Take it from an actual thief; you'll thank me later." Leiva really hoped this worked. She wasn't sure if Kisaragi was going to call the guards on her, and the novice considered herself fairly cunning; maybe showing Kisaragi how to guard from scoundrels like herself would keep the girl from acting on her government-allowed right to jail Leiva.

Holding one's tongue was rarely as difficult as when one thought they had a great deal of wit - a belief that reality did not always back up. In this particular scenario, Leiva's responses were ripe for verbal savagery the likes of which would make Etruria back off in abject horror and Bern swear off war forever, or at least a bit of snarkiness. Most prime of all was the honesty of her apology - 'I guess' wasn't exactly the pinnacle of heartfelt sorrow and regret to say the least. If anything it made the apology sound even less sincere than no apology at all, if that was possible. Sarcasm and all that. BUT fortunately for both of them, Kisaragi had juuust enough self control not to say anything especially stupid, which was an achievement in itself given her tendency to sometimes go, ah, 'off script'.
The little thief's offer took her off guard quite effectively, though. That was DEFINITELY not the way she had seen this conversation going. Leiva seemed to have calmed down a bit, but trying to draw her into this... web of deception and delinquency was an unwelcome offer at best, bordering on insulting at worst. The fact that Leiva likely hadn't MEANT it that way kept Kisaragi from actually getting mad at her, but it was still a bit annoying. Even if it had been meant well. It probably wasn't right to bristle at an offer of help, though... not for the first time, the myrmidon wished that life was just a little bit simpler, a trail of yeses and nos, good and evil, right and wrong, so she didn't have to cut through any of this morally grey bullshit.
"...If you want," she demurred, not quite refusing or openly accepting of the offer. It was Kisaragi's attempt at being diplomatic. It didn't seem that hard to her though. One of the few things that her size gave her an advantage in; no one expected her to move quickly or have quite the grip she did. And she didn't see what else there could be to it than just keeping an awareness of her surroundings and catching people's hands as necessary. It had worked for her twice so far after all. That said, it wouldn't hurt to humor the girl, and even if Leiva wasn't... exactly... what she was looking for in a friend, it was at least nice to have a... very vaguely familiar face. It did help her feel SLIGHTLY less alone in the city, at least. And it wasn't like Leiva was actually trying to get her to do anything bad, just tell her how it worked, right? Not that any of that stopped Kisaragi from arguing a bit, obviously. "It can't be that hard though, can it? Situational awareness and a quick sword hand when needed. Most thieves aren't fool enough to die for some coin."

If you want? Who the hell did Kisaragi think she was? At this point, Leiva was thoroughly aware of Kisaragi's apparent ignorance of almost anything, but it seemed she was breaking new ground with this particular conversation. Assuming that, at this point, the novice wanted to do anything but kick Kisaragi in the shin and book it the other direction was a complete misstep, and Leiva wouldn't be quiet about it if prodded. But barring that, the young thief had to devote a few moments of thought to even beginning to formulate a retort that wouldn't piss Kisaragi off more. However, just as she was about to speak, the novice's captor let more sewage spew forth from her mouth. Oooooh, no. Leiva sucked in a breath and bit her lip, barely swallowing down the urge to just walk off entirely, but she might do well to at least be decent to this girl. She had been doing a passable job already, and in her situation, she honestly couldn't afford to be any more sassy than she already had been. She exhaled sharply, clearing her mind and trying to respond reasonably to Kisaragi. "Okay, I'm going to ignore the 'if you want' thing and give you a bit of advice. It doesn't matter how big your sword is or how good you are with it, people are gonna take your purse because the idea is that they don't get caught at all. So, I'm gonna ask again, final offer: Do you want me to show you how to protect yourself from scum like me?"

Oh look, Leiva got incredibly angry about something for no reason at all. Again. Maybe Kisaragi was just being a little defensive due to realizing she was a little out of her depth in the big city so to speak, but either way she didn't really appreciate how... angry the girl was all the time. She was all for a good argument, but there was 'disagreeing' and then 'being offended by f**k**g everything,' and Leiva was a frickin' master of the latter. It was emotionally draining at best and definitely unusual even for the stubborn Sacaen to have to deal with, she was used to more, ah, 'stable' individuals. Even if they had very different belief systems than her and they got into arguments a lot. Which was only... sometimes her fault.
And realistically speaking, while she did like helping people, the key value there was that she helped people who WANTED help. She could be very patient with someone who just didn't understand how to do a chore or milk a goat or do, uh, basic math, Kisaragi wasn't exactly an expert on much beyond basic addition and subtraction but dammit she had SOME education at least. Leiva... didn't want help. Or at least she didn't seem interested in any from Kisaragi. And frankly, that was just a recipe for wasting her time. There were any number of things she could be doing that did not involve interacting with an angry child. Lodgings, mercenary work, gathering information, looking for people to randomly challenge to fights, looking for evildoers to murder in cold bloo-FIGHT IN THE NAME OF JUSTICE.
"Leiva, I'm not going to turn you in. It'd be too harsh for that crime." Kisaragi didn't quite manage to separate the exasperation from her voice, there was definitely an undercurrent of it to be heard, but beyond that her voice had a flat, final edge to it. She was done with this bullshit and entirely out of patience for these shenanigans. She didn't know Leiva's story or her reasons for acting the way she did, so she wouldn't necessarily judge them with finality - but she could definitely have opinions on what she'd seen. "-So you can f**k right off and go back to being scum if you want. It's your life to waste."
No point in lecturing further from there, but she had literally a million better things to be doing today. Her thoughts stated in no uncertain terms, Kisaragi turned and walked away with controlled movements, pushing her own frustration under the surface as best she could in order to keep her senses sharp. If Leiva was smart she would take her advice and just leave, but the bundle of nerves and issues might also do something really, really stupid like attacking, and while Kisaragi definitely didn't want to be responsible for actually hurting her, she was of the camp that the best defense was a sword to the throat. If necessary. She wasn't a master swordsman by any means, but her exposed back wasn't nearly as vulnerable as it looked.
