As Scar fought the enemy knight bravely, a ear splitting roar sounded across the land. Cardin looked up, panicking, fearful of what could make such a terrifying cry. A large beast soared out of the sky. It was covered in black scales. A long, spiked tail protruded from it's back. It also had two large wings like a bat's attached, enabling it to fly. It's mouth was filled with what looked to be hundreds of sharp teeth.
The enemy commander screamed. A wyvern? THIS was a wyvern? Said to be the younger brothers to dragons? Cardin's mentor had once fought against a group of Wyvern riders. Fighting with extreme skill, they had used their own weapons as well as their Wyverns' own skill to defeat his enemies. That band of demons had been the reason that Dex had retired from mercenary work so long ago! This was even more terrifying a beast than Cardin could ever had pictured; There were people that fought ALONGSIDE these... things?
After knocking away the knight, as well as Scar, now in his beastly form, the wyvern began to charge toward Cardin and Isabelle. He remembered what he had needed to do. As it charged him, Cardin took his bow in hand, taking an arrow from his quiver. He nocked the arrow and calmed himself. He took his aim for the creature's wing, closed his eyes to still himself, and released the string. The arrow flew for the wyvern, hitting it low in the wing. Although it was not a large wound, it was enough to puncture the wing, and send the wyvern crashing to the ground, screeching madly.

Yeah, figures he reacted like that. Isabel rolled her eyes at that rough man's ridiculous outburst, firmly and calmly making her way toward the tree she had just pointed out. Honestly. Pride and honor were all fine and well, but they had no place on the battlefield, when matters were life and death.
... And then someone shouted something about a wyvern. Isabel wheeled around, spotting the great scaly beast - horrible things, really. They were a mockery of dragons, replacing all the wonder and majesty with ferocity and horror. The mage, ever quick in her thinking... Gave a frightened shout and started running in the other direction. Oh no, not these things. Wyverns, wyverns; what did she know about wyverns? Pegasi had an innate resistance to magic, yes, but did the other common airborne mount share that property? All that useless trivia about the origins of wyverns (a point of much debate, as some claimed them to merely be an offshoot of the line of dragons, while others claimed them to be the descendants of ancient feral dragons; still others claimed that wyverns were originally a human construct in humanity's race to match the majesty of a dragon, given life by a great sage) was just that - useless, and running around trying to figure it out would only lead to her being scooped up and becoming an angry beast's lunch.
So out was popped the Ruin tome. The beast was having sudden trouble flying - from a single arrow? A quick glance over the wyvern's wildly flapping wings revealed only one large tear in the membrane, from the boy's arrow. The wyvern must've been a juvenile, then, which would fit with this huge display of aggression. The illustrations in the old books back on her family's estate had shown adult wyverns in marvelous detail, and Isabel could swear she remembered something about their wings never 100% healing over, leaving some small tears in the wing membrane - for just one small hole to bring this wyvern down, it must have been quite inexperienced indeed.
Oh, but what had she been so worried about? Holding this powerful tome in her hands, the fearsome scaled beast, all wings and tail and fangs and talons... It was nothing she couldn't handle. Isabel raised her hand, grinning wildly out of a mixture of confidence and absolute terror, and then guided a short series of inky black tendrils to bind the wyvern, leaving the great beast writhing on the ground. Perhaps if she had a bit more experience, she could simply crush the beast's wings from here, but this would have to do.
"Okay, everybody, listen up!" Isabel kept her hand up and her eyes on the wyvern. Her hand quivered a little, seemingly struggling to keep her hold on the spell. "I feel like we all got off on the wrong foot. Let me reintroduce myself - I am Isabel, a wandering mage. My cat, Solomon, is around here somewhere. I am currently holding that wyvern down. If you want to have a big, scaly a**hole biting at you, by all means, come on and attack me. But! If you don't, which, for multiple reasons, I would recommend, maybe we can sit down and talk things out like adults." As the wyvern roared, Isabel clenched her fist, and a bead of sweat ran down her temple. "Actually, maybe one of you lovely gentlemen could go over there and finish the wyvern off before that. I'm a powerful mage, true, but not even I can hold this forever."

What the hell, thought Scar as he recovered on the ground. His head was pounding, which was a weird sensation for him to experience in his war form. The Lion lifted up his paw and placed it on the top of his head, but it did not help at all. For a moment his entire body ached. The trip though the air had done some real damage, but it was minor wounds compared to some other attacks he had survived in the past. The true problem came in the very fact that he was not ready for it. The attack caught him by complete surprises and as a result he was stunned.
Scar sniffed the air as he shook his great mane. The head throbbing was starting to go away as his sensus came back on line. Scar could smell the beast now. The creature that had successfully pulled off a sneak attack. It's smell was foreign to him. It was not something he was use to smelling. Still he understood what it was. There were a few of them mixed in with the humans near the docks before he left his homeland, Wyverns. Anger began to rage though Scar's body as he began to picture one of these massive beast knocking him over. As much as he wanted to object to the ludicrous of it the incident had just happened.
A great roar filled the plains for a second time as Scar came running up the hill. He was not in his true War form. The massive black Lion stood four feet tall and ten feet long. His massive body weighed over nine hundred pounds, but he sprinted across the plains like a gazelle. Ignoring the black tendrils holding the beast down Scar pounced on the Wyvern with all of his might. His great maw snapped around the beast neck and ended the creatures life with a fearsome snap. The plain turned a fearsome crimson as Scar rose from the carcass . His crimson eyes focusing on the mage and the hunter. With a quick press of his paw Scar toppled the Wyvern's body over and began to make his way toward Cardin. As his paws stepped onto the earth his body began to transform back into his more human form. Taking on full human form he walked up to the boy archer. "What the hell is that", he asked?

Cardin took a deep breath and sighed. That had been one lucky shot he had landed! Who knows how difficult that Wyvern would've been to defeat had that shot not grounded it. Scar had shifted back to his human form, and from the look on his face it was clear he hadn't seen a Wyvern before. Then again, neither had Cardin before today, he'd only heard of them.
"I think it's a Wyvern..." Cardin said, "There supposed to be a more feral kin to dragons." He then looked over to Izzy, who looked slightly confused. He couldn't blame her. If he hadn't known of the Taguel before meeting Scar, he would have been confused as well. "Scar here is a Taguel, they're a race of shape shifters. You said we owe you something? I'm afraid that I don't have much on me. We could help you take the Wyvern's corpse back to a nearby village. I'm assuming there would be some kind of reward if it really was a "Wild Wyvern" as the knight said. These creatures aren't native to this area. Also, you said you needed directions? Well, we are kind of close to Bern if that's any help. Where are you headed?"
Needless to say, this mage was skilled. Scar and Cardin were getting along just fine until those soldiers showed up. However, if she hadn't been there to help, it would have been MUCH more difficult to kill the Wyvern, even while it was grounded. They could use her help in the future, but they simply couldn't afford it.

"Yes, yes, I know what a Taguel is." Isabel was relieved to be able to let go of her hold on the wyvern, since it was... Probably dead? Yeah, no, definitely. So much blood. Was that really necessary? Not really, but if the cat-man was going to go off on a feral rage, better the scaly beast than her.
And oh, good, the kid truly believed he was indebted to her. Excellent. With any luck, he was the brains of the two (for the other was certainly the brawn); it would be so much easier than having to directly deal with the Taguel. "And most certainly you do owe me! But no, dragging a massive, stinking carcass across the plains isn't really something I'm interested in." Isabel wrinkled her nose, making a point to turn her back to the creature's body. "But if you can't pay me, well, you'll just have to figure out some other way of paying me back! Wait, don't take that literally. 'Paying me back' doesn't have to involve money in any way, it's just a figure of speech."
Isabel turned away from the duo for a moment, looking over the plains. Solomon had a tendency to walk off whenever a fight broke out, and it seemed the black cat was in no hurry to come back at the moment. No matter; he always turned up sooner or later. While she was turned away, she quietly switched out one tome for another, pulling the Luna tome out of her bag. Luna was much better suited for a close-range fight, if it turned to that, though it'd be difficult to actually deal with the two at this range... But she somehow doubted she'd be able to outrun the Taguel to put a proper distance between them.

"Wyvern" growled the Lion as he turned and looked at the carcass. The lion walked over to the husk of flesh and blood and began to examine it. He did not know what a dragon was? He had heard the name, but never heard of the beast. They rarely had times for such stories back when he was a cub. Everything was about survival to them. Dragons were not a current threat and as a result they were rarely talked about. If this thing was like a dragon Scar was starting to understand why they were not spoken of much. They were not where near as strong as some of the other beast on the island. Then again this was a cub of its kind, or close to it. Dragons, from the little he knew of them, where suppose to be much bigger and magical. So there was probably a big difference between fighting them.
"Owe you", roared Scar as he jumped up from the corpse. The Lion had been half listening to the conversation and he did not like the way it was going. Scar did not like the idea of owing anything to anyone. Especially that of wizards. Wizards were a bad deal. The lion turned around and placed his fearsome gaze on the shaman. "What in the world do we owe you for! The soldiers attacked you on there own will. We did not bring them down upon you. The beast, I could have handled myself. I did not need you to jump in. You jumped in on your own actions! So what in the world do I owe you for!"
Scar looked at the mage as she touched her tome. His crimson eyes narrowed on her book. Was she going to attack him, or was she simply reacting to his outburst. Scar could not tell. He wanted to shift to his War From, but he understood that it would probably initiate a fight.
"Listen up Women, the boy may owe you a favor, but I won't. I never needed or asked for you help."

Cardin was torn apart. He didn't know what he should do. He knew that if he did indeed pay this woman back, Scar would be grumbling the entire way. Cardin also knew that if he didn't pay her back somehow, he would feel guilty. He decided that before worrying about any of that, they should take the two survivors, the knight and one of his subordinates whom Cardin had struck in the arm, back to the nearest village so they could return home to their families. If the men simply disappeared, he had no idea how the families would feel. It was then that Cardin realized that guilt was one of his biggest flaws. He always felt that he had to do the right thing, or he would feel guilty afterward.
"We should settle this later," said Cardin, "First, we should take these two back to a village so they can get back home." He gestured to the two men passed out on the ground. Cardin then took a knife from his satchel and brought it down on the wyvern's head. He figured that, if he was going to sell any of it, the horn would probably make the most. It was made of a hard bone, and could easily be used to make strong material of almost any kind. He carved around it and cleaned the flesh off. He decided to use anything that he did make off the horn to pay off Isabelle. Cardin still felt like he owed her something. She kind-of was defending herself as well, but still. She had helped them both.

"Newsflash, beast-brain." Isabel suddenly snapped. Oh yeah, the big tough Taguel, who existed in a world where might makes right, would think he's hot stuff, but this? This was just ignorance. "Those knights, who I can only assume were out here just to do their job, only attacked us because you insulted them, and then they attacked me because they assumed I was with you. So yes, actually! You did 'bring them down on' me."
She took a few steps toward the big beast man. Better to close the distance if this turned to violence now - she could get Luna off more easily that way. Despite her much smaller stature, the intensity of her gaze wasn't lessened by how she tilted her head up; she wouldn't be intimidated by the brute. "And oh, I'm sure you could've taken the big ol' wyvern down on your own. Why don't we go find another one? Your archer friend and I will sit back and watch you jump up into the sky, batting at empty air, while the beast just lays into you with claws and teeth. And even if you don't believe me about the wyvern, then you can't argue the first point - bringing the wrath of some hapless soldiers down on me through your insults!"
The blue-haired young woman huffed. "I'm sure that you think this is a world where everything can be solved by your big muscles and cat teeth, or whatever. But it's not! Some situations require a bit of diplomacy and tact. Now, you can stand here and brood all you want - besides, we haven't even discussed how you'll actually repay me."
Wait, where did the boy go? Isabel turned her head, scanning the area. Oh. He was over there, messing with the wyvern's head. The boy probably still though that he needed to actually pay her back with money. Why were boys like this? Thick-skulled brutes who operated on a "my way or the highway" mindset... She sighed. Today could be going so much worse, for sure, but there weren't many ways she could or wanted to actively think of...

Grr, Scar roared in his head as the maiden walked up on him. This women was infuriating, thought Scar to himself. He knew her game well enough to. If she was closer she could get a clean hit in before Scar transformed into his War Form. To be honest Scar had no intentions of turning at the moment. The maiden was arrogant and pushy, but he kind of liked that. She reminded him of a few lioness he knew back on the island, and at the same time ripping her to pieces would gain him very little. However Scar was not going to let her shoehorn him into owing her a favor. That was not going to happen.
"I disagree vixen", roared Scar. The Lion clinched his fist in rage. It is not my fault that humans are stupid and do not know there place! That human had no right to make demands of me! He is weak! This is not his land, and he was not doing his duty! As quickly as they jumped to attack you they probably would have attacked you anyway. I owe nothing for the actions of the foolish and weak humans. As for the Wyvern", spoke Scar as the lion began to shine in his eye. "I can go and hunt one of them down right now, vixen. Such beast do not scare me. Just because I got caught off guard one time does not mean the beast holds a advantage over him! If it had continued it's assault I would have ripped it's bloody head off!
As Scar began to have his argument with the shaman he noticed Cardin attempting to move the injured soldier and the knight. "Leave them", roared Scar as he turned his attention toward the wounded. "They would have done a lot worse to use if they had been the winner. Leave the warrior to die as a cripple and the knight, well feed him to the crows."

Cardin was now torn between the two even more! He felt that both Scar and Isabelle were right in their own respects. Scar had indeed started the fight against the soldiers by insulting them. They were just trying to defend the innocent citizens of their home country and the surrounding villages! But he also felt that Scar was being overconfident by saying that he could best a full grown wyvern alone. He wouldn't just let Scar go and get himself killed. "Scar, please stop!" Cardin said, "Both of you just please stop fighting! I don't want anyone else to die or think they are better than one another! Going after another wyvern, ALONE, is a death wish, Scar, even with your strength; and, although she was partially defending herself, she did help us take out those soldiers, even if you did start the fight. Now let's both just calm down, and try to sort this out PEACEFULLY." Scar began to think of other ways he could pay back the mage, this "Isabelle," that didn't necessarily involve money. "Do you have any hobbies, Isabelle? I've heard that a lot of mages are into brewing medicines. If there is something you need for your hobbies, we could help you retrieve it. Would that be a good way to pay you back?" The woman's cat, (Solomon?) rubbed up against Cardin. Apparently he liked Cardin's idea. He reached down and scratched the cat's back. It was already near dark, so Cardin took some coals from his bag and began to start a fire.

"Oh, I disagree Cardin - let the beast hunt down a wyvern if he wants! I have no problems watching a fool who thinks only with his muscles get torn to shreds." Not entirely true; gore was gore, and gore was gross, and she didn't want to get into the habit of watching bloodshed. And then, on the other hand, Cardin's good reasoning skills simply fell apart. She had had such high hopes for the kid, too... Did he take her for some sort of wandering medicine woman? "No, no, medicines aren't exactly my forte, or even an interest. No, the best way for you both to pay me back would be to escort me to the nearest civilized town." If the two of them couldn't piece that together on their own, well, she wasn't above spelling it out for them. "I don't want money from you, I don't want any pieces of that wyvern. I want to get out of these godforsaken plains and leave all of this behind so that, just maybe, I can find some decent company and a group to hire me for my talents!" The blue-haired witch let out an exasperated sigh, stepping away from the two of them. The black cat Solomon, having returned and gotten what affection he desired, walked away from Cardin to sit next to Isabel. "So, the beast who hasn't had a fully-formed thought in his life, and the boy who picked up a bow and thought that made him a man. For getting me caught up in all of your nonsense, the best way to repay me will be to escort me to a town or a city in..." She looked over to the soldiers. "... Bern, I suppose."Click here for spoiler Oh god, I'm so sorry. I promise that this is just a result of the rocky start... If you all want to keep threading, I'm sure some downtime to get to know one another will help Isabel warm up to Scar and Cardin.

I refuse, Scar screamed in his head. The Lion refused to let the women dictate where things where going. Scar was not going to give her anything. He was not going to budge, not even a inch. Who in the world did this human think she was! Who in the world did Cardin think he was! How dare he underestimate Scar's power. The Lion knew he had the power to take down one of these winged terrors. They were similar to the powerful griffins on his homeland. He snapped one of there necks and he can snap a Wyvern's next just as easily!
"Listen here women", shouted the Lion as his crimson eyes turned more feline! "You can take that load of dug and feed it to another person. I am not taking you to Bern, nor am I going to take you anywhere. We are heading west to the land of demons and monsters. Once there we shall train. You can go south to the land of whatever on your own. However as for me I move as I desire and I owe you nothing! Stupid humans will be stupid humans and I will not pay debts created by stupid human actions!"
With that Scar walked away from the maiden and Cardin. "I am going hunting, I need the meat", he spoke as his body began to make the transformation. His hands became paws and his skin turned into thick fur. The man shifted into a massive lion with pitch black skin and a crimson mane. With a strong kick off the ground Scar scattered into the darkness. he had half the mind to turn back and rip the mage into a thousand little pieces, but he remembered the sight of her magic. Scar feared no beast or man, but magic. Well magic was something else. He did not understand it and that lack of understanding bothered him more than a little.
OCC: Don't worry about it Izzy. Scar is a jerk and is Rp as a jerk. As a result it makes it hard for Izzy to build up a relationship[ with him or get off on a good start. I am up to keep threading. Scar will come around once he gets lonely.

'Wow' thought Cardin. He couldn't believe how Scar had acted toward Isabelle. He couldn't believe how Isabelle had disrespected Scar! They were both in the wrong here, this argument could have been over much earlier and they could have been on good terms, but neither of them could let it go. They seemed to think it was a fight for dominance. This thought made Cardin laugh. Scar was part lion, which sort of made his "need for dominance" make sense. As Scar stormed off, he could see that Isabelle was still fuming with anger. "Well," Cardin said, trying to calm her, "If you want, you're welcome to join us for our meal once Scar gets back. He is pretty cold at first, but he is actually very kind underneath all that 'holier than thou' exterior." He sat down and began to tend to the fire. He hoped that those two would become friends eventually. It would make things a lot easier. However, Cardin could understand Scar's logic. Isabelle had just been defending herself; they didn't owe her anything. But Cardin knew that she had wanted to help too. He could see loneliness in her eyes. She just desired kinship. "So what are you doing this far south?" Cardin asked, "I'm traveling with Scar to become stronger. I wouldn't have been able to survive on my own for much longer without him." He realized how much he owed Scar. Scar had taken Cardin under his wing, even though he didn't have to. Cardin really appreciated that. OOC: Yeah LOL. I'd love to keep threading here. Maybe Isabelle will decide to travel west with us? Who knows...

Isabel rolled her eyes - it felt like she was doing that a lot in trying to interact with this Scar fellow. It was his fault that she got caught up with the soldiers and the wyvern, since he had instigated that fight, but whatever. He was gone, and with any luck, perhaps another, more mature wyvern would swoop down and have him for a lovely appetizer.
She sat down on the ground across from the boy, and oh boy, this duo just got weirder and weirder. As he worked on setting up a fire, he kept shooting her glances, and Isabel got the distinct impression that he was trying to read her. "Well, sure. A meal, at the very least, would be something." As she awaited the fire, she swapped her tome for a regular book from her bag, and set to reading it.
... Until Cardin started talking. Well, it'd be rude to completely ignore him, but with the way things were going, the temptation was strong. And yet... "You're asking what I'm doing in Sacae? Well, if you must know, I was brought here with a merchant caravan. They had hired some muscle for protection, but all that brawn and no brains was surely going to be a disaster, so I was hired as well. Unfortunately, they seem to have, ahem, left me behind." She sighed, leaning back and propping herself up to look at the sky. At the very least, the sky was pretty, and the plains had plenty of fresh air. Those were positives, she supposed.
The blue-haired young woman didn't respond to the second part of Cardin's statement right away. "Perhaps you'd be better off finding some, well, humans to travel with? I don't mean to come off as, well, judgmental as I surely am, but that beast... Scar. He's... Probably not the best teacher for someone like you." She sat up again, looking directly at Cardin. "I'm sure he can teach you plenty about survival and acting all stupid and macho, which men seem to care about, but what about learning how to better wield a weapon? I've traveled with enough archers to spot lucky shots when I see them, and you certainly got lucky a few times today. I don't think Scar has that kind of expertise - but hey, I could be wrong!"
She left that sentiment out to dry for a moment before continuing. "... And you two are heading somewhere dangerous? For training? You can only throw yourself against the same brick wall so many times before that's pointless. You need a real teacher to show you proper form. If you're heading out there, hoping to hone your skills or whatever, without really learning how to defend yourself, then you're only heading toward disaster." Isabel stopped there, briefly flashing back to a time, at a dilapidated fortress, where she had been in way over her head... It was a miracle that she had made it out of that alive, but she had had good friends there, watching her back, and she watched their backs, too.
... She did miss them. Calvin was the one she remembered best from those days, but there had been others... Was that back when Jya and Valorian had still been with them? And she thought she remembered a knight as well, but now she couldn't recall his name...

Hunting did not go well for Scar this night. To be honest it never did when he was angry. He was not hiding in the shadows or sprinting fast enough. The Lion was simply roaring though the night and moving with a heart filled with anger and rage. Who in the hell did that mage think she was! What makes her think she can talk that way to him?! #$%^ a wyvern! As the lion brooded over the incident his nose picked up on a scent. It was not a strange one, but one of great concern. Men, and a lot of them. They were moving though the plains with purpose and setting off signals. It was clear to Scar that they where looking for something, but he was not sure what, or who. The Lion decided it would be prudent to investigate this recent movement. Taking his time the Lion began to move tough the tall grasses slowly and steadily, hiding his fur in the darkness of the night.
"Where in the world could they have gone", spoke one man.
"Maybe they simply got lost? The plains are a big place", spoke another as they began to scream across the plains. They kept calling for a name that Scar did not know, but wheat he did know was the color of there armor. It was the same as those one humans.
Friends of there's thought the Lion as he hid in the grass. The light from torches shinned all around the area as a search party moved around looking for the missing patrol. Scar, no longer desiring to be around began to move though the shadows and make his way back out to the plains. He began to wonder if the boy had finished off those humans as ordered. He hoped he did. Sparing there lives was not going to prompt the soldiers to spare his. As a matter of facts go Scar was sure it was going to get him killed.
Suddenly and with little warning Scar let off a loud roar. The sound of his voice shattered the calmness of the night. The soldiers jumped in there boots as a few men on the outskirts saw a gigantic black figure moving though the dark of the night.
"You see that", shouted one. However Scar was long gone into the night.
Fifteen minutes later Scar rushed into the duo's camp. The giant ninehundred pound lion just shot out though the darkness with a great leap and trotted though the camp. Scar did not even bother to leave his beast form before he began to bark out orders. "Grab your things boy! The west is cut off we move south! Move quickly or we will be surrounded!"
