Who knew Theodore would get pulled back to Vinland only a few weeks after leaving his home! He had been hired by a group of merchants to make weapons and armor for them on top of helping human-taguel relations around Dwasbury. Maybe the taguels would feel less weary of the merchants if they had one of them helping them. For a few days, he had made weapons at a zealot pace before departing for Vinland... Freshly made swords, crossbows, leather gear and even the ocasional greatbow were stuffed inside of crates as him and his new associates were going to Dawsbury.
For a few days now, Theo and his now newly acquainted business associates had properly set up their massive stand. He had the job of running the armory section while the others would sell other commodities such as clothes, spices. One of the merchants he had especially grown fond of was Damyen, a skinny tanned man who shared his interest for blacksmithing despite his focus on tools over weapons. The two of them would help each other in the temporary forge they had built to make extra wares to sell with the unprocessed metal they brought to Vinland. They also liked to play chess and drink ale they would get from other merchants with some of their profit. Theodore definitely didn't dislike the work, though he knew he wouldn't be doing it premanantly, simply a quick and easy way to finance his trip across Elibe. Also it was pleasant finally working with somebody who understood his passion. A nice change compared to what other taguels were saying about his usage of "tools".
The present day was a slow one, only a few people would up to Theo's side of the merchant stall and eve nthen, most were window shoppers. How are they just passing up my amazing works of art? I just made the most exquisite scimitar and nobody is even taking a small gander at it! Making sure his weapons were all well displayed, he went back to his chess game with Damyen:
"You better watch your back Theo, because you're about to fall right into my trap... Check!"
He chuckled lightly.
"You humans sure have interesting ways of passing the time." he said, dragging his king back to try and salvage the game he was losing. He did only learn the rules a few days ago after all.
They kept playing and laughing together, only stopping whenever a possible customer would show up.

Fleur took a moment to appreciate the sights and sounds of Dawsbury. This place was the true pinnacle of human and taguel coexistence. A crowned jewel of a city that needed to be protected at all costs. And it was here that Fleur and her group were summoned to defend. Well, partially defend. The other parts were mostly used for shopping and restocking. Their trials around the Vinland had left their stock of supplies empty. The owl needed some new leathers for armor. The wolf was looking for a new weapon. And the lynx was looking for a good meal. And Fleur was looking for herbs to make new batches of healing balm. The balm worked to help heal the wounds of her comrades when she was too exhausted or not there to do so.
They decided to split up and spend what they could go get things that they needed. It had been about a half hour since they split up before Fleur ran into one of her group. The elderly wolf taguel Mavis. She was particularly interested in a weapon shop run by a group of the non-native humans. The craftsmanship of the weapons was very good. At least according to Fleur. Then again Fleur did not have much experience in the way of human-made weaponry save for the bone knife she carried around. Mavis, on the other hand, used human weapons like daggers to help cope with the fact that her fangs and claws weren't as sharp as they used to be.
"What about this one with the silver shine?" Mavis spoke. The elder wolf looked about as excitable as a puppy when it came to shopping for new weapons. Even going so far as to wag her tail. To which the usually stoic Fleur seemed to smile at.

"And that is... Checkmate, my fluffy-eared friend."
Sighing slightly, Theodore admitted defeat as he layed down his king on the game mat. Looking up to his fellow merchant, he said to him: "Let's see how you fare when we play cards next time." However, their conversation was cut short when Theo noticed that customers were showing up! Finally! Readjusting his tophat, he stood up to properly greet his two customers... Taguels on top of that. A wolf and a... rabbit? It certainly had been a while since he had met somebody from his tribe. He didn't really feel homesick despite that, what he was doing these days was more than enough to keep him occupied compared to the drag his old life was like.
Anyways, he smiled like any merchant should as the two arrived to browse his wares. Seeing the wolf have particular interest in one of his higher quality blades made him giddy as an earnest smile took over the "regular business" one.
"Ah yes, that's one of my best shortswords! 25 centimers in length for the blade and also made of a silver alloy, great for beast and monster hunting. Hold on, I don't normally let people do this, but I'll let you have a feel for it, consider it a small gift from one taguel to another."
Letting the older wolf woman take the blade into her hands for a bit, Theodore turned his attention to the other lady. She didn't seem to use much weapons from what he could tell. But who knows, maybe he'd get lucky and get her to buy a dagger or two. Taking of his tophat for a second to properly present himself, he gave the two of them a flap of the ear, for added theatrical flair.
"Oh, where are my manners! I'm Theodore and that one over there is Damyen, welcome to our small shop! (He then specifically looked at the female rabbit) Would you also happen to be interested in something? I also do repair work and special orders if need be."

Now this was unexpected, Fleur was expecting to find these foreign vendors to be human. She had not expected there to be a taguel among their group. Let alone another rabbit taguel. Fleur's expression changed to that of it usual expressionless one. She squinted her eyes a bit to get a better look at this other rabbit taguel. His clothes were strange. They were were nothing like the clothes her family tribe wore. They were certainly something of a higher quality then the hempen cloth she wore. He could almost fully pass for one of these foreign humans with the top hat on. He spoke differently too. But no amount of silken clothes, fancy baubles, or fine speech could hide what the merchant was.
Pathetic. She could smell the scent of the island on the white rabbit. This man was a taguel. He should be proud of it and the roots of where he had come from. He should be wearing the traditional attire of his people. At least that's what she thought. And while the rabbit took some time to address Fleur. Fleur did not acknowledge him back instead she stood there with her arms crossed. She let out an annoyed sigh. Her previous mood had been soured by the sight of this other rabbit. She turned her head away and focused on something else in the distance.
Mavis seemed to grin a bit at the well dressed taguel's offer to hold the new knife. She took it and examined it intensely. She swung it a bit to test it's weight. It's fluidity in the air. Yes she deemed it to be a fine knife. One that could pierce through the hides of any beast or stubborn vine that got in her way.
"Hey what do you think?" Mavis turned around to ask Fleur. But, the elder wolf saw that her younger rabbit companion was in one of her moods.
"You alright over there?" Mavis asked. Fleur just flicked her hand over to Mavis direction. That hand gesture was one with many meanings. Usually it meant hurry up, don't worry, or keep going. Either way Mavis knew what it meant and she turned back around and refocused her attention back towards the two shop keeps.
"Eh. Don't mind her. Im Mavis. Nice to meet you boys. It's a fine blade. Perfect size. Shape. What's your price? You willing to give me some sort of senior discount?" Mavis asked.

The rose seems to have some thorns... he thought as the rabbit taguel simply brushed him off as she crossed her arms and looked away. Theodore couldn't help but grin at the woman's hostile reaction, she reminded him of how his mother would react when he'd come home with whatever weapon or tool he had built with the help of the closest neighboring tribe who were adepts at blacksmithing, completely different from his traditional home.
Turning his attention to the taguel who actually wanted to talk to him, he looked at her happy expression as she seemed to take a liking to the blade. When she came to ask for a price, Theo brought his gloved hand to his chin as looked at her for a bit before making a decision, it was made of silver after all... But he might be able to talk to the rabbit if he acted nice and gave her a nice discount.
"Hmm, well since you asked so nicely, Mavis. I think I might be able to make you a special price. I could part with it for oh... How about 700 gold? All I ask is that you take care of it, I'm very attached to the blades I make, you see? I'll even add in a whetstone so you can keep it nice and sharp, wouldn't want you to find yourself in a dangerous situation with a dull blade now would we?"
Damyen seemed to chuckle at the savviness he showed for business. Despite living in Vinland, Theodore was able to develop his speechcraft and become a respectable merchant, so selling a silver dagger wasn't a difficult task at all.
He decided to ask the wolf taguel about her companion as he leaned to whisper in her ear (even if rabbits had amazing hearing so it didn't matter a whol lot), curious about her earlier reaction:
"But before we seal the deal on your purchase, could you tell me about your friend over there? It seems like I might have done something rude to upset her. Wouldn't want bad publicity for the shop you know... Do you know if there's anything I could do to at least stop her from having that emotionless expression?"

Fleur's ears perked up a bit at the bunny man's mention of her mood. Oh, she could hear the conversation and she knew exactly why she was annoyed. This taguel had integrated himself in the life and culture of these non native humans. He had tossed away all aspect of his island heritage. There was something to be said about her unwillingness to accept these foreigners. But, she could not help it, she didn't like them. They reminded her of ants.
Ants sent out scouts to investigate an area, they sent signals to one another, if they find conditions favorable, then they move in. Ants would take over any nook and cranny if you let them. These humans behaved similarly. They arrived from the sea, scouted an area, set up a base Aurion, and now they were encroaching deeper into the island. She feared that these sea humans would be more like locusts then ants. She had seen Aurion and the destruction they caused to the neighboring woodlands. The use of that wood to make homes.
She shook her head. She hated ants. They were tasty, sure, but she hated that there would literally be thousands of them left for every ten or so eaten. She knew that the little six legged creatures had their place in the world and in the forest. But what place did these humans have here?
“Seven hundred gold pieces is a stiff price.” She handed back the dagger. The wolf woman rubbed her chin.
“Hmm.. let me sit on it for a bit in the meantime. We've an owl boy who's in need of a new leather guard.” Mavis commented.
“Better cover them delicate ears of yours boy.” She then nonchalantly morphed into her her wolf form. Mavis wolf form was just what one expected from an old maid. Her form was standard when it came to wolf taguel. She her fur was jet black with several grey hairs littered throughout her fur. Most of which congregated around her face and muzzle. The old wolfess let out a howl. Fleur covered her ears briefly in anticipation for the howl.
“Sorry bout that Theodore. And don't get that cotton tail of yours in knots. Our rabbit is always like that. Might be upset at you or upset at something she heard three stalls down.” She shrugged and leaned in closer.
“Although she's not too fond of foreign folk.”
“Geeze Mavis I was only a few feet away!” Spoke the voice of a disgruntled young man. A brunette boy no older than fifteen flew over and landed nearby.
“Boy, see if these fine folk can fix your guards.” Mavis asked.

Despite being an older lady, her roar still had a powerful punch to it. Theo desperatly held on to his hat to try and save his delicate eardrums from too much damage... Did she really need to do all that just to call over her companion? She probably disturbed the entire street! Anyways, Theodore was already over it as he turned his attention to the female rabbit when Mavis started explaining why the girl was in such a mood. Getting a smirky look on face as he brought his gloved hand to his chin to add a bit of theatrical flair and also to try and get under the rabbit's skin. Theo, you sassy rabbit, you...
An irritated owl taguel appeared in front of the stall. From what Mavis was saying, he could need a new leather armor... Eyeing the young boy, Theodore realised that to make any kind of armor for him, his wings would have to be considered. Looking to his friend Damyen, he quickly told him: "take the boy to the back and take his measurements Damyen, I have to take care of these two." As Damyen was about to say something, he decided to not say anything when he noticed Theo's look in his eye. He only knew him for a few weeks, but that look was the sign Theo had just found something interesting... And it's impossible to stop Theo from studying interesting things, Damyen learned that in only a few days. Better give up right now and not waste any energy trying to stop him. "Come on mister, let's see what we have here." the human said, dragging the owl a few feet away where he could take his measurements.
He softly chuckled before adressing the rabbit directly, deciding to go all out: "So just like a prickly flower, the rabbit prefers to keep people at a distance. Why such animosity towards outsiders, my dear? And whatever that reason may be, am I not one of your kind? Don't my fluffy ears and tail prove the fact that I am an equal to you? It simply wounds my heart for you to look at me with such disdain... Please, I only ask for you to speak a few words, I simply must understand why is it that I'm upsetting you this much."
Was he having fun? Oh baby, he was having the best time of his life right now.

"I'm not sure I should be taken to the back room of anything with strangers." The boyish owl joked. Of course, he was more than capable of defending himself from all sorts of humans. But he knew those sort of responses ruffled some of Mavis's and Fleur's feathers fur. Fleur raised her hand to her forehead, almost ashamed of the owl boy. She knew he was joking. The old wolf sighed and shook her head. She'd follow the boy where he went out of duty to watch over the younger generation. Despite all their bickering, she did care for the little owl boy. As she cared for all the members in her pack. He shifted back towards his human form. The demi-human form of himself sported the broken leather guard in question. All he had to do was take it off and show the new human. But, if he was going to get a whole new guard, might as well have it done right. The older guard was getting a bit tight on his chest as he transitioned from teenager to adult. Plus he was never really measured before. At least not by a tailor, he was a little eager to learn how much he had grown within the past year. An actually numbered measurement instead of him clawing the top of his head upon his adoptive's father's door frame.
The other two taguel were away and this white rabbit now had every opportunity to talk to Fleur without any distractions. The brown rabbit sighed and approached. She was not going to carry this sort of conversation at a distance. Even with both of their sensitive ears, she didn't want to speak loudly on this subject. If these humans had done something to Theodore to force him to abandon his taguel pride, then she will do something to help him regain his nativity. But, if he left his heritage behind, by choice, well then she'd react differently.
"These outsiders are unknown and potentially dangerous. Tell me why do you cast your lot with them?"

Theodore was happy to see that the woman had chosen to finally speak up. Not only that but it wasn't an insult! Good, now he knew he could continue a bit more with the sass before she'd blow her lid. She seemed to question his reason for joining these humans. Theodore almost felt as though the question was silly, but from a "regular" taguel's perspective it made sense. Protecting the mother earth is kindof a big deal for them.
"Do you not see these fine clothes my dear? How could I find such amazing fabric in Vinland? Clothes aren't the only good things humans know how to make. You should see the sweets they cook up... Oh, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it now I fear... Delectable carrot cake, you are a cruel addiction..."
Theodore saw that she wasn't the joking type so he went back to a more serious attitude to show her he wasn't entirely a jester although he could very well make a damn fine one... Sighing a bit, he decided to not keep his real answer a secret for much longer. Slightly whispering to make sure Damyen and the rest wouldn't hear him, he kept a smile one while explaining himself.
"To tell you the truth. I simply find them a lot more intriguing than taguels. Their culture and customs are so interesting to observe! Did you know they worship a lady named Elimine? Apparently she was an important person in history... I mean come on, worshipping other humans, doesn't that sound strange? Personally, there's no way I can stop myself from learning and observing these little guys as much as I can. It's almost like a gift that keeps on giving!"
Theodore had left his excitable nature take over for a bit as he was explaining everything to the rabbit. Still grinning, he waited for her response.

"Confectioners foods and fancy silks... Is that really all it took for you to abandon your taguel pride?" Fleur kept her expression neutral. She was a master at not showing her emotions. She knew that a level head kept a person alive much longer than an emotional one. But, this other taguel, aggravated her. She did not know if he knew how these humans had already begun a crusade against one of their own. These humans had already taken a numerous amount of the islands native griffons to be broken and sold. It would only be a matter of time before these humans started taking taguel as slaves. And she feared that these humans would lure those with curious minds, those who were still children, with trinkets, food, and clothes like they did Theodore.
"I am familiar with their concept of their worshiping a dead human. A family of these outsiders told me and a child that we were cursed by this dead maiden. Simply for being taguel and not a human." She kept her breathing steady. She did not like that impromptu visit to the village of outsiders she was forced to make. The other little fox she was with also seemed to hold some sort of curiosity towards those humans. While the fox taguel was young, who knew not the dangers of the foreigners.
"They called us demons." She shook her head slightly. She knew what the word demon was. Demon was something that was associated with monsters. And not the monsters that followed the laws of nature. No, it was a word associated with monsters who had been corrupted somehow. Monsters who had no mind.
"These outsiders are no gift." She paused for a moment. She needed to choose her words carefully.
"I know not what game you think you are playing Theodore. But, I think you will lose it."

Ooh boy, looks like he had found the pinacle of taguel traditionalism. 1st prize ladies and gentlemans! Theodore just won the jackpot it seems! The white bunny couldn't help but chuckle while she talked badly about the humans. He felt right back at home with his family and their closed off views and their boring traditions and superstitions. What complete trite... However, when she mentionned that Theo was playing a game, that's when he decided to speak up. His usually playful grin turned into a smile filled with could attributed to malice. He didn't usually show his true self like this, but with this taguel in front of him, the situation was damn near perfect, he thought.
"You sure do talk a big game, thinking that I'm some kind of child being lurred by strangers wih sweets and gifts. Let me tell you something missy: I could not care less about any kind of taguel pride you think I should have. Pride is the most vile and disgusting I've seen in both humans and taguels. To me, I don't give a single care about what happens to the Earth Mother or its inhabitants. Actually, I'd probably enjoy watching this damn continent burn down to the ground, if only to see our stagnant society burn down. At least THEN, something worthwhile would happen... In only a few weeks on Elibe I've done more things than I ever could in years spent on Vinland. I've learnt some things about blacksmithing and other skills that would've taken years of research for me to discover on my own. These people progress at an incredible rate. While they may be zealots, we're comparatively just as worst by the fact we're too scared or stupid to advance as a society."
Looking at her with the same look that he had during his speech, he sighed a little before bringing his hand to his face, closing his eyes to talk in a much more calmer tone: "Taguels like you are exactly the kind of people who piss me off, thinking that their cause is more righteous than the others... We are all demons, like it or not, neither of our races are good. I simply decided to not choose a camp and watch the world slowly burn."

Fleur shook her head slightly. She did not expect such a response from the white rabbit in ludicrous clothes. She was clearly mistaken by his demeanor and intentions to siding with this rabble of humans. A rabbit who wishes to see the world burn. While some of his reasoning was true. Taguel society was stagnant in some sense. But, her work as a member of the scales had her travel the island and seen it for what it was. She had seen ruins of civilizations long past. She knew not the history of those ruins, but only knew not to go in them. The denizens who live around them do not like to be disturbed.
"You are more foolish than I thought." What sort of man sits idly by while the world burns at his feet? A man with no family that cares for him and no family for him to care for. It was not an uncommon life for a taguel.
"You claim pride to be a disgusting vice. While pride in excess is terrible. But, pride should not be something you should be ashamed of. Without pride, there would be no risks. Without risks, there would be no examples to be learned from." Her voice was neutral.
"You have pride in your work, in the tools that you make. In your appearance.. however questionable it may be." She pointed a long finger out towards the weapons on the shelves.
"You claim not to take any sides in this short life. That you wish to watch the world burn. And while it is true new life emerges from the ashes. I advise that you take care not to let yourself be consumed by the flames." She shook her head.
"You are an adult. I will not chastise you for the path you choose to walk in your life. If you find use in these strangers then use them to how you see fit. By all means, reap what you sow. However, If they betray you and stab you in the back, well then do not say I didn't warn you." She took a step back.
"And try not to drag any other innocent people into what hell you wish to see." All actions have a consequence. She could hear the voices of the others. The complaints of how the new guard was too loose. And Mavis telling him not to worry he'll grow into the gaps.

Oh man, silver-tongued and proficient with metaphors? A woman right after my own heart if her beliefs weren't so idealistic. Really does sound like when my family would berate me for my lack of respect towards the community in general... I take pride in my insolence and that will never change.
Looking at the bunny lady, a huge smile started to form on Theodore's lips. Slowly, a laugh could be heard, progressivly getting louder as he started to hold his sides. However there was something... unnatural about this laugh, almost as if it this was an evil laughter, fuelled by Theo's repressed anger towards taguels and his completely clashing views compared to the woman. After what seemed like a bit too long for somebody to laugh, he soaked up the tears the started to form with his gloved hand before starting to talk: "Me? Stabbed in the back? Oh please, I always watch my back, no matter who I'm with, comes with the territory when you've had to survive on your own as a child."
Making sure nobody from his group was listening, considering he prefered to keep the extremist viewpoints out of business, he continued to explain to the woman how he saw this whole thing. "But you know what's really beautiful? I don't even have to do anything! I just have to observe you all and it definitly looks like you need no help to destroy yourselves. However, I don't think I've ever seen taguels fight meaninglessly the same way humans have, those guys have turned that into a literal artform... Anyway my point still stands, the way I see our species being so defensive against the humans is truly amazing. Actually, let me guess, the little owl with you must be fighting because you've all told him that it was the right thing to do right? Have you ever considered that maybe he could be doing something better with his life than risking it on the battlefield in the name of our great and meaningless taguel pride?
Surprisingly enough, Theodore did actually care about children. To him, they represented a completely free person, not tied down by any imaginary belief like religion or duty. He completely hated to see children being led down a strict path by others the same way his parents had tried to show him the so called "right way". During his life, he had actually met and took care of children other members of his small sedentary group had. To him, showing them to be themselves and never be bogged down by what others say was extremely important.

"How sad.. To have grown up without a family of your own. I can see how that would affect your mindset and create your bizarre goal. I grew up within a large clan of several different taguel. We were all family and did what needed to be done to keep the peace." She could almost see her tribe in her mind's eye. A veritable menagerie of rabbits taguel all living in their den's underground. They had learned to cultivate the land to plant wild berries and other root vegetables to help them survive. They foraged the forest for what they needed. They traded with other clans for the things they did not have.
"The owl came to us because he has someone he wants to protect. While I cannot speak his full reasoning for him. I do know the person he fights for." Fleur glanced over at the closed off area where the Owl was. She could almost see the old bear with him. Probably commenting on how good the leathers looked.
"The boy has an elderly father. His only family. Who can no longer defend himself. In nature not being able to defend yourself from the dangers of the world is a death sentence. And while the good sir lives in the trade city, surrounded by people, defended by the guard, and living a good life among taguel standards. His son still worries for him. So he joined us to learn the art of combat so as to better defend him. There is no shame in wanting to keep your loved ones safe." She turned her gaze back to Theodore.
"We have warned him that this path he chooses to walk is not an easy one. He will get hurt. He will see a loss. He will have his spirit tested time and time again. He knows he is free to leave our group whenever he pleases. But he chooses to stay with us regardless." She didn't even know why she was telling Theodore all of this.
"I know his father. And I know exactly how he feels about having his only son wander off into the wilds of the island. Trying to keep the order between human, taguel, beasts, and creatures. A parent does not want to see their child come to harm. The boy has been with us for half a year now.. and he is family to us."

Theo may not have liked the lady, but that didn't mean he thought she was lying. He honestly felt relieved to hear about how the owl was doing this of his own accord. He didn't agree with him forcing himself to help his father, but if that was what he had to do to be happy, then Theo was glad the kid was doing it... Oh geez, that meant he had just said all those words for nothing. One thing he hated was when he knew he had said something wrong.
"Well, I guess I just made myself into one big pile of rabbit dung with those words... Look, I know I get carried away, that's just who I am. I'm not saying I'm apologizing since it'd be fake anyways, but I can tell that you're helping that kid, just not in the way I'd do it... Alright, I'll try for today to tone down the arrogance how does that sound? Anyway, I think I released all of my pent up frustration since last month so I'm good.
In reality, she just seemed like a person that would fight back if Theodore started talking smack. He rarely actually held grudges since those things are so meaningless and only serve to restore one's pride. The only grudge he can't get over is the one he has against his parents... That one could never be fixed until he found them and gave them a piece of his mind.
"I'm curious, you said you lived in a pretty community correct? Tell me, from a traditionalist's point of view, how you can live like that. During my childhood, all I could think about was getting out so how did you do it? Or I guess what was that made it worth it?
