Vita had spent many nights alone shedding tears and further lamenting her loss of status and wealth. Disowned by her father and rendered just as poor as any other. The blow was so bad she had to leave the town of her birth outright due to humiliation. Just thinking about it made the pain well up again and tears were being fought back!
If there was one thing left to her by her father though, it was her sword skills. No, he did not give them to her, she developed them herself! Even if she wasted her potential. Ugh! Why did she get stuck like this! She hated sword fighting, it was annoying. Fighting was so ugly and she only wanted something beautiful. Hmm, could she redefine combat to make it beautiful? Doubtful.
"Hey! New girl! Wake up! Pay attention!" Davian, the leader of this little escapade yelled at Vita drawing her out of her sleepy stupor. Once he saw her jump to alertness he returned to watching the road.
Vita yawned and shifted in her seat. She hated all this so much. Davian was such a pain and the others here were a bore. At least they got to ride in a cart, that was a plus, even if the seats were splinter ridden messes. She looked over Davian a moment, he was a hero of sorts, far more experienced than her and she knew she should learn from him, but he annoyed her. He was a fight nut from what she could gather, him and his dumb white hair. Did people think they got to be cool and act cool just because their hair was a cool color. Not like her dingy brown. Ugh! Why was she pouting about it? She was gorgeous and she knew it! Except she hadn't bathed in a week. She glowered at the others in the cart.
To her left was a swordmaster by the name of Jace, a real lazy sod who was actively drooling! Ugh! and SHE got yelled at to stay awake!? Someone save her from this nightmare!

Siegmund pondered silently as he looked down at his map. Julian had made notes along the path that Siegmund was to follow, yet for some reason he didn't...hmm...it seemed like Siegmund had missed a turn at a nearby village. Gah, Lycia was confouding him time and again. Bern was far simply to traverse and study. Lycia and its million fiefdoms made things far more complicated.
Siegmund was SUPPOSED to be headed towards Laus, to meet up with Julian's Steelborn...along with Leif, Reina, and Hadvar. He knew he should have taken the ride with them, but Siegmund had been struck with a touch of wanderlust ever since his fall down the mountain. Ordinarily he'd prefer to shoot straight towards his goal, but to reach his current goal, a greater understanding of Elibe would be quite useful.
...The problem was that Siegmund, frankly, didn't know where he was.
He pinched the bridge of his nose and let out a sigh before rolling up his map. It was bothersome, but there really was no need to fret. He could simply double back to the last village he'd stopped at and ask for some assistance. Siegmund still had about a week before the Steelborn would depart without him, so there wasn't much need to panic.
However, there was a possible turn around in the near future, as Siegmund heard the telltale sound of wheels rolling across the dirt road. Siegmund stepped to the side of the road and squinted at the fast approaching cart. Thankfully not TOO fast, it meant the young man would have a chance at waving them over. It was...a bit of a risk, in retrospect, but he doubted that cart would do well off-road. If they turned out to be brigands he'd make a break for the treeline.
“Hold! Hold!” Siegmund called as he waved to the cart. He hoped that they stopped, and that they didn't try to rob him...or worse.

The situation: Two teams of mercenaries would take two different roads in identical carts. If and or when the reported raiders showed up both carts would be protected but only one would have the goods. If they were lucky they would attack the one without the products, if not, well the mercenaries had best earn their pay.
The mission: To safely deliver both carts to the destination of the neighboring city and beat back any bandits that should come along.
Operation Procedures: Assume all travelers are hostile threats until proven otherwise. If they should instigate in conflict you have permission to strike them down without mercy.
These were the basic rules set in place for the job. Most of them were in fact decided upon by Davian and not the employer. Honestly they sounded like rules that would get them in a lot of trouble if things went wrong. What a pain. Vita looked out the window and saw a twig waving them down, no, wait, it was just a boy... oh no. Vita could already tell he was no threat to them, just look at him, but the amusement at what she knew would come next was way too goof not to smile at.
"New girl! Check that one out!" Davian barked the order.
"What!? Why me!?"
"Because you want to earn your pay and a spot on the team you will do whatever the f*** I f****ing say!" Well, when you put it like that... Vita hopped out of the cart quickly and drew her scabbard from her belt. Placing a hand on her hilt she took a ready stance.
"State your name and business! If you are a brigand we will show no mercy!"

Siegmund was relieved when the cart came to a halt rather than turn to try and run him over. At least if they were going to kill him, it wouldn't be with death on wheels. However any admittedly somewhat paranoid fears of being slain without warning were set aside when a long haired brunette stepped out of the cart to greet Siegmund. Not because she was attractive, or anything, though...wow, she was. Even though she looked like she'd seen better days...
...Uh, th-that aside, it was because of her stance. And her questions. Of course the threat of murder wasn't completely gone just like that, but it was certainly set aside for the moment. At least she didn't seem like she'd kill him on the spot. In fact, if anything, her aggression sounded a touch forced to Siegmund. It was over the top, almost...like she was trying to prove herself? He could have been wrong, best not to read TOO much into it right away.
“Well met! My name is Siegmund, and I'm a rookie mercenary.” Rather than show any fear or reverence to the woman, he instead gave her a confident smile. He didn't have anything serious to hide, after all, so he didn't have any reason to let his fears get the better of him just yet. “Though I am...admittedly rather lost. I simply waved your cart towards me so that I could ask for directions.”
Siegmund raised his hands up and took a moment to continue. He nearly reached for his map, but that could have set the woman off. “If you'd allow it, I'd show you my map, so that you can see my destination...”
...Wait, crap. Siegmund didn't exactly want this group to know where he wanted to go. The Steelborn had made it pretty clear this job was supposed to be secretive. Thankfully none of the details of the mission were jotted onto the map, so there wasn't much reason for the woman or her companions to suspect Siegmund, or pry too deep about his business in Laus. Siegmund hoped, anyway.

Ugh, why was he smiling at her? He was a kid and she had a blade at the ready, gross. "A rookie indeed. If you were a mercenary worth your salt you would be able to handle yourself instead of chewing on the good will of others." It was a purely antagonistic comment, not to mention hypocritical too, she took all the charity and handouts she could. It was practically her way of life right now. But right now she wanted him riled and antagonized, if he took action against her or called out his hiding buddies then she would have done her job to expose him, swimmingly.
"Well, Sigmord! Let me see your map and if my good will continues to last I will point you where you need to go, but if you try anything, and I mean ANYTHING, I will cut you until you bleed!" Was there any other result to cutting someone, that was kind of redundant. Ugh, interrogating was hard. He probably saw through all of it... but she must retain her composure and harden herself. To this end she intentionally furrowed her brow and scowled deeply. Yes, that was a mean face she could be proud of. Oh goodness did it tire her muscles to hold it though.
"You think she'll be alright out there?" Damian asked.
"Uh, I honestly don't know. I think she is better off than that poor kid. It's obvious he is no bandit, too well dressed and well... scrawny." Jace replied, now awake.
"Yeah... let's just enjoy the show then. Ought to be a good learning experience."

For the briefest moment Siegmund felt a slight surge of adrenaline burst in his chest. However, the longer the brunette continued to talk...and insult him...the more apparent it became that she was trying EXTREMELY hard. What for, well, Siegmund wasn't too sure. Though he wasn't familiar enough with mercenaries and warriors to read someone's skill just off a glance, this girl did not give Siegmund the same vibe that the Steelborn had given him. If he were to go off of that, then he'd imagine she's a rookie as well.
Of course, he could be off entirely, and Siegmund would rather not be proven wrong in the worst way possible. So he decided to think carefully about how he'd respond...his mother used to say things such as “kill them with kindness”. Perhaps his best tactic was to simply ignore her taunts and insults, in that case. It was worth a shot, Siegmund just hoped he had the patience to maintain such a tactic.
“Well thank you kindly.” Siegmund replied, attempting to be as sincere as possible. He reached into his pocket and withdrew his map, taking a step towards the pretty, but crass woman. He extended his arm to her and held the map out. “Though, if you don't mind, could I have your name as well? You don't seem to be a bandit...perhaps you're a mercenary?”
Siegmund assumed the woman wouldn't answer his questions. They were more to throw her off guard than anything, maybe to stop her from attempting to intimidate and instigate him. "Sigmord" did bother him, though. More than he would ever like to admit. Though the fact that she had seriously called him that meant one of three things to the young man; she was either trying to antagonize him on purpose, was hard of hearing, or perhaps just mentally difficient.
A true shame if the latter, and...almost charming in a way, if the former. She really was quite striking, even if her hair was a bit on the greasy side...

At this point it was safe to say that the boy before her was no bandit, nor part of any darker bandit conspiracy, but she still could not forgive his nonchalance at her and her threats. Was he toying with her now? She had a real blade in hand and at the ready! She was a master of the killing draw! Okay, proficient in the killing draw, she could not oversell herself too much. But, but, but, garrrrr! FEAR ME YOU BRAT!!!
Her inner dialogue and her outer self held some, major, disparities. This Siegmund, er, Sigmord, bothered her and it was her turn to continue to do the same back. Ah, Sigmord, what a stupid name to give him. Oh yes, so stupid indeed it was absolutely brilliant, delightfully so. She held back a smile but the side of her mouth quirked and quivered ever so slightly.
"Don't thank me! How juvenile can you be? You want to be a mercenary start acting abrasive, don't take crap from anyone and make demands. Geeze." Snatching up the map roughly it was a miracle it did not tear, more a testament to the materials than any cautionary action on her part.
She looked over the map and saw Laus. Oh, well that is not too far from here. Shoot, perhaps that should have been expected even, a rookie mercenary going to where the other mercenaries are. "Well, Laus is not too far from here. You can get there in a day or two if you hurry, but, you'd get more notice going to Cornwell." Perhaps her first bit of sound advice, with Cornwell becoming its own state built around mercenaries and guild actions there was an as of yet unformed void in important local leaders. Laus on the other hand had been at it for ages. She had failed to take into account the two would provide very different work.
"You don't need my name. My name is not relevant Sigmord. Sheesh!" She handed the map back over now. "So, yeah, you don't seem to be a part of any bandit actions yourself so I am going to get out of here. Ciao!" She promptly turned and offered a lazy wave.
"HEY BOYS! We found 'em!" Real bandits!? They were coming up the road and down it too. They were stalled so long because of him they still got ambushed. Vita offered a death glare at 'Sigmord' apparently blaming him as the other two men burst from the cart.
"Looks like we're fighting after all! If you're really a mercenary, I expect you to help!" Davian took this encounter in strides and even began to order Siegmund as though he were a part of the team.

Yeah, Siegmund was pretty safe to assume that the woman was trying a bit too hard at this point. To be tough, or stand-offish, or intimidating. A quick glance to the cart she'd climbed down from and Siegmund saw a group of...either mostly or entirely men. He couldn't tell if they were armed at all but they all naturally looked far more imposing than this woman, who declined to even give Siegmund her name, was. Perhaps she was attempting to impress them?
Regardless of the motives for her odd, somewhat irritating behaviour, the woman still wound up helping Siegmund. Which was all that mattered in the end. Everything else was simply a lost opportunity, as clearly this woman was not interested in socializing whatsoever. Still, Siegmund was left with a puzzled expression. He did not exactly understand WHY she suggested he head to Cornwell. Perhaps the area was friendly towards mercenaries? Or had a great deal of work?
That said, she never bothered to point out how to get to Laus either. Instead she just told him he wasn't very far off...which was good news, certainly, but didn't really get Siegmund going anywhere. And to top it all off, the woman planned on leaving just like that!? “H-Hold, mi-”
Siegmund didn't even get to finish. One of the men had yelled from the cart, though by the warning rung out Siegmund could already hear them approaching. Bandits. They must have crept out of the treeline and had begun to rush the cart from both ends of the road...ooooooh boy this looked very, very, VERY bad for Siegmund, didn't it? Sending out someone who looked harmless was a bait tactic even HE knew bandits had a tendency to engage in.
The glare Siegmund received from the brunette took a solid step in proving his fears to be true. Siegmund was about to stutter out a quick explanation, when instead one of the men from the cart climbed down and simply told Siegmund to help them fight. Did the others think Siegmund was innocent, then? Well...either way, he had his chance to prove that he was.
This was also an excellent opportunity to gain some experience. It would be helpful for when he met up with the Steelborn...provided he survived the encounter.
Siegmund drew his sword, determined to do just that. He couldn't die here. Not yet. It was far too soon for him.
“Understood. If there's a plan, I would love to hear it.”

"A plan? Nah, there ain't never a plan that survives first contact with the enemy!" Davian laughed maniacally. Hoisting his great shield with one arm and his great blade with the other. Vita was taken aback by the sight of it. His sword was the size of a great sword but he carried it deftly in one hand! What madness was that!? "If bandits want to make a go of us then let them come! They will break themselves upon us!" He laughed harder.
Jace meanwhile calmly adjusted his cap and drew his blade. He let out a long sigh, "Let's just make this quick eh?" The two seasoned veterans contrasted one another quite strongly but they had one thing in common. Neither of them were exactly worked up over this. Vita on the other hand...
"Oh goodness! They have horses!? I thought bandits were a bunch of ugly axe wielders!" She suddenly began to order Siegmund. "You watch my back and I will watch yours! You got it!?" She looked nervous, frightened and distraught even. Then suddenly she calmed and began to laugh. "What am I getting worked up about?" She looked back to Siegmund with a wicked grin. "If I am not destined to die today then what is there to worry about? I can do as I please!"
Well that was one way to see the world, whatever kept her head in the fight he supposed. "Alright! Here they come boys!" Davian watched as the bandits closed in from both sides. The ones on horseback slowed to a trot. They looked down at them with skull masks to obscure their faces. The one in the lead raised his axe hot steam bursting forth from it. A magic weapon!
"Leave the cargo and you may walk." He said his voice echoing from under his helm. The steam was beginning to obscure like a fog.
"You two! Get out of here! This is beyond the both of you!" Davian's cocky and crude attitude was entirely replaced by one of urgency.
"You heard him kid!" Vita was not going to say no to that, but to their rear the escape was blocked by a few bandits of their own. "Great."

“No plan that survived first contact with the enemy, hm?” Siegmund didn't know how much he agreed with that statement. On the one hand, his plan to capture a wyvern had failed at first contact. That said it hadn't been a very good plan. Ah, the cruel benefits of hindsight. All the same, that didn't make the statement a universally true one. Plenty of plans survived first contact with the enemy, at least aspects of them. The key was to adapt quickly and utilize tactics to overcome unforseen obstacles.
...Of course this wasn't a casual debate with Reina or Hadvar, but instead an ACTUAL battle. For which Siegmund had no plan for whatsoever. The only thing he had to worry about surviving first contact with the enemy was himself. Instead Siegmund got to watch as two older men, each one imposing in their own right, marched towards the bulk of the enemy. Unfortunately...they seemed to be on horseback. Strange skull masks to boot.
Perhaps even less fortunately was the fact that the nameless woman had begun to panic. The concept of horseback bandits seemed to bewilder her...which was quite telling. Perhaps she'd had a sheltered upbringing? It would explain quite a bit about her behaviour, or at least Siegmund supposed. It was grating, but Siegmund wasn't in a position to give orders or entirely ignore her. He'd need the help of her and those mercenaries to survive.
“Agreed.” Was all Siegmund said to her. Half of her nattering had turned into some rant about destiny? Ordinarily Siegmund made an effort to pay attention to all that he could, but he preferred to keep his eyes focused on the brigands in question. Not ALL of them were on horseback, it seemed, and given that some were behind him, well...Siegmund couldn't count how many there were...
One of the riders raised an axe to the sky after he spoke to the mercenaries and...was that...steam? Siegmund blinked in shock as he watched steam erupt from the blade of the axe! He'd never seen a weapon that could do anything of the sort! Was it a weapon infused with magic? If so then ah...that did not bode well.
Fear began to creep in and merge with Siegmund's otherwise calm demeanor. He did his best not to show any outright signs of it, but he would be a liar if he said he didn't feel his knees quaking against his will. A rush of adrenaline surged through his being as he was given the order to flee, reinforced by Vita's urging. He followed the brunette only to find the path blocked off by the other brigands. At least none of them were on horseback...or launched steam from their weapons.
“Okay...” Siegmund tried to take a breath and raised his sword once again. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest, he needed to breathe deep to keep calm. “Okay. How do we handle this?”

"How do we handle it!?" Was he a mercenary? Or was he just some chump punk kid that had no idea what he was doing? He should not have to defer to her for guidance! He should just act and fight? Right? Okay, if she was being completely honest with herself and Siegmund she too had no idea what to do or what she was doing. She was hoping for further guidance from others instead of having to make snap fight decisions of her own. It was simply just not her forte.
"Okay! Fine! We take them together and focus on breaking through! Okay!?" Geeze! Would that satisfy the nagging boy's needs? Because nagging was exactly what he was doing. Not staying more calm and composed than her and simply deferring to another's judgement, nope. As she reached for her hilt her hands were shaking uncontrollably. Having practice matches with her sister and boys back in the village really did not translate to anything here in this moment, when it truly mattered. Faced with real combat and men willing to kill, she was left petrified.
Damn it all! She was a gifted swordswoman! She was better than these louts that bared her way! She was incredible, and amazing and the best damned thing since her favorite tea! She managed to clasp her hilt and prepared to rush the bandits. "I will down one of them in a single strike, but the other I won't have such an advantage for!" She needed Siegmund to contend with the other.
The two bandits meanwhile looked at the two and clapped the shafts of their axes in their hands. "She's a cute one. Shoot, the boy is too." He laughed. "Think they'd sell well?"
"Boss wants them all dead you idiot. If we are to pass this initiation we must follow orders." The other retorted.
"Fine, fine." They prepared to rush.

Well, it was very nice to see that Vita was just as poor at this as Siegmund himself was. Though the boy had pegged her as significantly less experienced than the company she had traveled with, the still held the strong possibility that she had at least some degree of experience with brigands or ambushes. At best Siegmund had his skirmish with those two brigands back on the Pheraen-Bern border, and even then he'd barely survived that encounter.
Still, Siegmund was all for the idea of teamwork...though he didn't trust Vita to watch his back whatsoever. He just had to hope she saw their co-operation to be imperative to their survival. Unfortunately Siegmund also had to trust in Vita's own self-confidence. She claimed she'd be able to down one of the men instantly. Siegmund uh, would have to see that one for himself. But at the very least he would give her the opportunity.
“I'll cover you, then, and keep the other one off your back.” Siegmund kept his voice low, for the brigands were talking. Not necessarily distracted, but not entirely focused. This was his moment. There was a slight hesitation before Siegmund let out a sharp cry, specifically to shock and attract attention from the brigands. If he was to give Vita her one-stroke opportunity, he'd need all eyes on himself...
Oh boy how badly this could end.
Siegmund brought his sword up shoulder level and charged at one of the men. Steel gleamed in the sunlight as Siegmund extended his arms and twisted, using momentum from his run to help in a heavy vertical swing. If it connected it'd likely do some fairly heavy damage – neither bandit looked well protected or armored. However the swing, while calculated, had been calculated by a novice of the sword. There was unnecessary motion in it, and it the wind up left Siegmund a bit too open all the same.

"Uh yeah, sure thing, you do that then." Well, it was a plan of sorts she supposed. Let's go with it. But, how assured could her one strike one kill draw slash really be when the enemy was aware she wanted to kill him? The answer not very. But she had not time to reflect on this notion as the boy, Sigmord, er Siegmund, put all of his eggs in her basket, and boy did he put ALL of them as he took off running.
Oh, he was a true blue idiot. Huh, she could let the bandits both focus on him and just slip right by, she had no reason to put her neck out like that! I mean, come on, there was some sort of monster behind them, reserves on the sides of them and guys in front of them, did anyone REALLY expect them to stay and fight? Or make it out alive if they did? But no one would forgive her for doing that, least of all herself. Why did she have to have a conscience? It was such a pesky nuisance.
The bandits were bandits and no less a master of combat as Siegmund. IF his attack connected he would have put a man down and out of commission for certain, but as his attack was highlighted and easy to read the bandit thrust the blunt tip of his axe into his wrist before he could properly get momentum on it. The two laughed at how simple this would be. Well, they both laughed until the other found their throat slashed open.
Vita had done it. Her sure to kill strike had landed flawlessly, oh, she was sure to use this to brag and boast about he greatness later. No need to mention the bandits were completely distracted. Nope, all her, and her amazingness. "Come on! You brute!"
One bandit to face the two swordsmen. His anger was clear as he let out an angry howl. "I'll smash your face for this girly!" Yeah... rethinking that running away part now.

Siegmund wasn't quite sure where he'd gone wrong, but clearly he'd made an error. Much to his chagrin. Before his attack had landed he felt a sharp sting ring throughout his wrist. It was almost enough to force his weapon from his hands but the youth maintained his grip, teeth grit tight as he recoiled. The pain was not extraordinary beyond the initial strike – but it was the sort of irritating sting that dredged up rage in a man. At least the brigands were too fool to follow up.
Or pay any attention to his comrade.
Whilst the two brain-numb miscreants cackled at their minor success of parrying Siegmund's first strike, the one that had yet to do ANYTHING, let along something to brag about, was the one who'd received a gash across his throat for his trouble. Of course the latter was extremely shocked at this turn of events, another brilliant sign of his intellectual inferiority, and cussed Vita out for the act. Once again he'd failed to adequately assess both of the threats he had before him. No, rather than pay note to the armed man he'd failed to wound, disarm, or eliminate, he simply fell for Vita's taunt and put his full focus on her.
His gift was the full length of Siegmund's blade thrust into his side. The sound of steel biting that deep into flesh – grinding against bone and innards alike – was a foreign one to Siegmund. He'd never landed such a blow on an opponent before. For an instant, amongst the adrenaline or perhaps because of it, he felt his stomach churn a bit. The young man watched the brigand bleed out all along his blade for a moment, before he planted his boot on the knave's knee and drew his weapon from his side.
Siegmund sucked back a few breaths to calm his stomach and his nerves. He watched the brigand's knees buckle, and his footing give out beneath him. The man's weapon dropped to the ground as he attempted to cup his wound in vain. All he accomplished was staining his hands red before he finally fell forward.
“...How anti-climactic.” Was Siegmund's first thought. If he weren't swept up in the moment it may actually have disturbed him. However the sounds of battle raged on behind them – a reminder that there was no time to dally. The youth swung his blade, the bulk of the blood that coated it flung from the steel and onto the grass before him, and sheathed it before he began to move forward.
“Let's hurry.”

Did that just happen? No, really, did that just happen? Her one hit, sure to kill strike just connected AND then her young compatriato there easily stuck it to the bandit, quite literally, while he was distracted by her great and glorious self. She really wanted to say something witty now, it was gnawing at her tongue, her lips, it was right there so cherry picked for her she could not help herself.
As the bandit held his guts in his hands but before he could fall she looked at him and stated simply, "I guess, you could say, this was a... STICKY situation!" Oh, that felt good, but she thought she could do better, maybe, guess you couldn't cut it? Oh, wait, he is dead on the ground, guess she will have to settle for it.
'Let's Hurry'
"Yup! You don't have to tell me twice! Let's get far away from here!" Vita hoped the boy could keep up, she was nimble on her feet, something she attributed to her light clothing and unparalleled natural graces. "Town is only a few miles away, if we're fast enough we can get there in about twenty minutes!" It was three miles to be exact, and she knew she could make it in nineteen minutes, but she could not speak to the boy's athleticism.
"Hey! We aren't letting you two get away like this!" The shouting came from a pair of cavaliers. They must have noticed their escape and managed to get ahead of Davian and Jace.
"Eep!" it was not a brave noise or a confident challenge that left her lips right then, even if she wished they were.
