Vita commented after Siegmund felled the second brigand. She...put a lot of emphasis on one word. In any other situation it would have stirred thoughts that would have had Siegmund blushing. However, in that moment, he was just confused. Was that supposed to be a joke? It had very much fallen flat if that was the case.
At least she was quick to get moving again, and Siegmund followed suit. He kept his dominant hand over the hilt of his blade as he ran. Adrenaline had his hand twitching, his pulse so strong he could feel it in his wrists. A reminder that, for all of his composure, Siegmund genuinely was BARELY keeping it together. He felt pretty good about killing one of them but he did not want to find out how many more were going to chase them.
...And then he heard the heavy “clop” sounds of hooves on dirt. Siegmund glanced over his shoulder and saw two mounted men riding after them. Oooooh that wasn't good. They weren't about to outrun horses! Okay, best bet was to break for the tree line...but it was too far! The riders would be on them before they'd make it to the woods.
Already they were seconds away. Siegmund drew his blade and kept an eye over his shoulder. The rider that followed him had raised his own blade, and he was a mere few feet from Siegmund. Running was not an option – so battle would have to be.
As the rider brought his blade down Siegmund pivoted and raised his to parry. The sudden shift in momentum and position already had the boy at awkward footing that, when compounded with the momentum of a horse at full gallop, was enough to knock Siegmund backwards several feet. He landed hard on his back and gasped, a bit winded from the shock.
No no no, this was not good in the slightest.
