Selunae took a glance at her friend and paused, noticing that Kyra appeared to be lost in a million thoughts. The young huntress was curious. What was she thinking about? It had to be something juicy for her to space out so suddenly. Was it about the raven? Only thing for it was to ask. “Uh.. Kyra?” No response, so she patiently waited. When that didn’t work either, the huntress turned her attention back to the raven. “You silly bird, say I love you. You can do it. I love you.”
The bird seemed to be toying with Selunae, if such a thing could have even been possible. The raven cried out the tune of one of the nearby songbirds over and over, then finally finished with “Silly bird, silly bird.” The huntress could only sigh in defeat. She couldn’t figure out how to influence the raven to say what she wanted it to say. The black bird cocked its head to the side, and called out another shrill songbird tweet. The huntress rolled her eyes in dismay and finally nudged Kyra with her elbow, eliciting a startled reaction from her friend. Kyra then proceeded to act as if nothing happened, responding to Selunae’s previous comments as if she hadn’t been staring off into space for the past minute or so. The young archer let it slide for the moment, but was still curious about what had so completely wrapped up the novice’s attention. As if on cue, the raven chimed in and broke her train of thought immediately.
“Kyra? Kyra? Kyra? Silly bird.” Selunae was amazed at how meticulously the tone of her voice was remembered and replicated by the bird. It was uncanny.
The huntress giggled and nudged her friend again playfully, sticking her tongue out. “You are a silly bird, Kyra. Guess we’re done here, not like I have ‘nuff money to buy anything anyway.”

"Well, alright then. Guess we should go outside and see how late it's getting." Stepping outside the pet shop, Kyra was a bit disappointed to see the sun so low in the sky, but she just had to accept it. They couldn't have fun forever unfortunately, and they'd soon have to arrive at the tavern for actual, serious business. "Hmm, I don't really know where to go honestly... This was sort of an impromptu tour, and we won't have enough time to spend at most places tonight. Sigh.. I've had so much fun today. I almost don't wanna get back to the serious stuff, but it's the right thing to do. I'm sure it's what my father would have wanted me to do..." Trying to cheer herself up before getting too down she ruining the mood, she gave Lunie a smile. Maybe not the most convincing one ever, but it was satisfactory at least.
As they walked down the street, Kyra felt herself overcome with an oppressive sense of doubt, and all the feeling of confidence in their mission that they'd had earlier in the day was now gone in that moment. Speaking up, she said, somewhat weakly, "L-Lunie..? I know you and I had both said that we were gonna free all those hunters and stop the bandits and stuff, but... Well, do you really think we can do it? I mean.. we're just kids.. We barely even handled a wolf just yesterday with both of us combined." Kyra hoped that her complaints didn't ruin the huntress's mood too much, but it was bothering her too much not to bring up.

The late afternoon sun cast its orange tint across what was preparing to become an evening sky as the would-be-adventurers filed out of the door without so much as acknowledging the meek store clerk. The young woman sighed as the door closed, all she’d wanted was a little human interaction amidst the plethora of animals she displayed for sale. Not only did she fail to draw any attention to herself but she’d failed to find a home for any of her animals as well. Ah, the sad tales that went unnoticed.
Hmm, the novice seemed out of ideas on how to fill the limited time remaining. Personally, the huntress was getting pretty hungry, though she didn’t speak up about it. The two of them hadn’t even finished breakfast when the ordeal with Elle had occurred and candy, delicious as it might be, didn’t fill much of the void left by the incomplete meal. Besides, you didn’t show a girl a good time without filling her belly. It just wasn’t done. Was it? “Ya know? I’ve learned a lot ‘bout Lucerne today. Next time I’ll have to show ya around home. If ya want to anyway. I mean, you don’t have to or nothin’.” Selunae blushed slightly, embarrassed to make the suggestion, and steered away from eye contact.
As they continued down the street, the novice began to draw inward and become somewhat distant. Selunae moved closer as she sensed the change in her friend, unable to figure out why the sudden change in demeanor had occurred. They’d been having fun hadn’t they? Or was the huntress selfishly having fun this whole time without noticing that Kyra had been miserable? No, Kyra wasn’t allowed to be sad right now. The young archer would have to do something to fix it. Reaching around the young swordswoman’s back, she pulled the girl in close by the shoulder. “Are ya okay, is it something ya wanna talk about?” Almost immediately the novice spilled her concerns, seeming somewhat emotionally drained by the daunting challenge they had set before themselves. “Oh, you’re worried ‘bout that? It’s gonna be okay. I mean, all the serious fighting will prolly be handled by real soldiers and guards and stuff. And ‘course, once the hunters realize we came with help they’ll be able to fight back and escape. We’ll be heroes! We’re the good guys, right, and the heroes always come through in the end.”

When Lunie suggested that next time, she would guide her around Lucerne, Kyra couldn't help but giggle a bit. "Heheh, but Lunie, you said you'd barely even seen much of the proper city. How could you guide me around if you don't know where you're going? I'd be fine with it, I just don't know where you'd take us is all." Assuming they wouldn't get utterly lost, Kyra actually didn't mind the idea of travelling the city again, with her not being the one in charge of the tour this time. That'd be for another day though, if it happened at all. If we survive what's up ahead...
When Lunie had answered regarding her grievances toward the trials ahead of them, she responded, "Y-yeah, the good guys... Heroes don't lose... You're right, Lunie, I guess we should keep going. Maybe we won't see anything else tonight. It's gonna take us a while just to get to the tavern from here, so if we wanna be there at or around nightfall, we should maybe just head straight there before it gets too dark. My mother always said that it's not too wise to be walking around most of the streets here after dark, and there's only two of us, that may not be too wise. But for now, we've still got some daylight!"
I still don't feel good about this... I may seem more confident, but that's for Lunie... I can't have her falling into despair on me... She seems so.. happy and innocent. I don't want that to possibly be ruined by the bandits we're planning to face down...

When Selunae had caught on to what the novice had meant about getting lost, the confusion on her face vanished and a sudden burst of laughter escaped. “No, silly bird. You live in the city, but I live out there. I thought we might spend the day ‘round my home next time. Down by the river or around some of the other places I like to go to get away from it all.” The huntress giggled over the misunderstanding, not really paying it much mind. Food was a much more pressing matter. She was famished, if only ‘chatty Cathy’ hadn’t blurted everything out so quickly this morning. She’d barely begun to whet her appetite when she had been forced to abandon breakfast. Her spirits were beginning to droop, and she was starting to feel grumpy even. Now the novice was talking about getting back to business? Nuh uh. No way. Food first.
At first Kyra’s words began to fall on deaf ears as she had attempted to discuss the matter of arriving at the tavern in a timely manner. Then, they fell only on her own ears as the increasingly dismayed huntress abandoned the young novice in favor of finding somewhere to fill her belly. They probably could have waited and picked up something cheap (and questionable) from the Flagon, but Selunae had no intent of waiting that long. She was hungry now. That bread shop even seemed like a good idea at this point, but it wasn’t the direction she picked. In fact, Selunae didn’t even know where she was going or what she would find, if anything. She had unintentionally slipped away with little concern for anything beside her growing appetite. Munching on the rations in her pack was certainly an option at this point, but why waste them when a real meal could readily be had at any number of establishments in Lucerne. Wandering the streets at random, the young archer finally looked back to find that the only faces she saw were those of strangers and that Kyra was nowhere in sight. It was the logical outcome, of course, but Selunae had unreasonably hoped that she’d find her friend hot on her heels instead. Great, what was she to do now?

As Kyra continues walking, imagining exploring the outskirts someday with Lunie as her guide, she didn't even see the red hired girl walk off, as she was still focused on reaching the tavern as soon as possible. Once she rounded a street corner, she could see the location still a decent ways away. "Well, there we go, Lunie, we're almost there now!" Waiting for a response, but hearing none she turned turned where her friend had been earlier, but found she wasn't there anymore. "Lunie? Lunie, where did you go?" Now Kyra began to get worried, knowing Lunie had no idea where she was going in the city by herself. I have to find her before she gets lost, or something bad happens to her. Gods, this isn't good at all.
Backtracking the way she'd come, Kyra began looking in every nook, cranny, and alleyway she could find. Why would Lunie just run off like that? Wait.. no... Was she kidnapped by someone and I didn't even see or hear? Oh gods.. please don't be that... That could mean she might be dead too. Maybe bandits found her? Ugh, this gets worse and worse the more I think about it. Don't worry, Kyra, I'm sure she just got lost, and think that's it. As she walked through the darkening street, Kyra kept saying loudly, but not quite shouting, "Lunie? Lunie where are you? If you're trying to scare me, this isn't funny! If you can hear me, please come out!" Kyra hoped that the huntress could hear her words well enough in the event she was lost, or at least have the common sense to ask a guard where to go.

The huntress wandered the streets, one after another, searching for either a cafe or restaurant where she could sate her raging appetite. Her criteria consisted entirely of smell and signs depicting food, which admittedly wasn’t going to be too helpful, except in the case of establishments like that bakery she noticed, or the candy shop. Perhaps she should go back to the bakery, at least that place had something to eat for sure. Which way was back again? Selunae took a look around – nothing looked vaguely familiar to her. Well, that idea was shot. Even if she did go back to where she had impulsively left the novice, she wasn’t sure which particular streets would lead where anymore. That is when it dawned on the young archer that she should have paid more attention to where she was going.
There were really only two options here, aside from just waltzing into random buildings. One, ask for help and two, wander until she knew were she was again. Quite frankly, the huntress didn’t know how to waltz anyway. So, option one.. scanning the lightly populated streets for someone that would be willing to help and didn’t absolutely look like a creep was a more laborious task than she imagined. It was getting later in the day and the more upstanding citizens were settling in at home for their own dinners now, making way for the less savory fellows on their daily tavern crawls. The few not included in that lot were inattentive to the archer – perhaps her presence was lacking or maybe they just didn’t want to be burdened with hearing her out. It was a relief when a slender middle-aged woman halted at the red-haired girl’s call.
“Oh, um, excuse me lady. Uhh, I got separated from my friend and got lost and was lookin’ for somewhere to get something to eat.. Could you-” Selunae’s hopes were thwarted as the woman grew visibly annoyed and stopped her before she could finish.
“Another filthy urchin looking for handouts. Off with you, little brat. Scurry off to your slums where your kind belong!” Slums? Her kind? What was the meaning of this?
“W-Wait! I’m not-” The huntress desperately tried to explain and plead her case more clearly, but the woman still wouldn’t listen.
“Don’t talk back to your betters. Get away before I call for the guards!” Selunae was wounded by the woman’s pugnacious attitude, not understanding at all why she wouldn’t listen to reason.
“But I h-haven’t-” Moving closer in an attempt to be heard out, the young archer found herself on the receiving end of a harsh shove as she came within reach of the angry citizen.
“Get away from me!” The bitter woman sneered as the huntress fell to the stone road and hurried on her way with complete disinterest, leaving the girl shocked and in tears. Whether by fate or chance, Kyra’s search for Selunae just happened to carry her down that particular street as the scene was concluding. The archer wasn’t facing in her direction and didn’t notice her, gloomily lingering on the ground in the very spot she had fallen.

Kyra was beginning to lose hope as every twist and turn she made through the streets was met with failure. Lunie was nowhere to be seen, and she was beginning to get seriously worried. What if she'd been kidnapped? Gods, she wouldn't be able to forgive herself, despite Lunie being the one that had run away of her own volition. Luckily for Kyra, the next turn she made brought her out onto a street that was now very sparsely populated, with her red-haired friend sitting in the ground, looking away. It looked like perhaps she'd been knocked down. What had happened? Had she gotten in a fight? Kyra wanted to find out, but first she was simply happy to have found her friend.
Walking quickly over to Lunie, Kyra hugged her from behind. "Oh, Lunie! I'm so happy I found you! Why did you run off? What happened to you just now?" Slowing down a bit, Kyra spoke again, "S-sorry, I'm just so glad you're okay, for the most part. You seem a bit down, but you're still in one piece. What happened exactly? You're just sitting here in the middle of the street. Did you get lost, and just give up trying to find me? Or is it something else?" Kyra wasn't sure if Lunie was going to answer her questions in full right now. Maybe it was something that Lunie didn't want to talk about. Either way, Kyra figured they should get moving towards the tavern pretty soon now, as they'd already lost enough time as it was.

Dumbfounded and bewildered, Selunae seemed to be lost in her thoughts as her friend unintentionally sneaked up on her. The moment Kyra came into contact with her, she tensed up tremendously, having been too absorbed in her efforts to figure out how things went so horribly wrong to register the sounds of the encroaching novice. A sharp gasp of shock was the only warning that preceded what would have been an incoming scream, however the sound of Kyra’s voice brought relief and an end to the panic that surged in the archer’s frantic reaction. Quite frankly, Kyra was about half a second from an unintentional elbow to the face and an earsplitting scream. Instead of turning absolutely violent, the huntress leaned back against Kyra, comforted, and slowly opened up to her. It wasn’t so much responding to the swordswoman’s questions though, it was more addressing the confusion and emotional distress she was struggling through.
“I was j-just t-trying.. to ask for help.. and she was so m-mean to me.. She knocked me down.. and told me to g-go back to t-the slums.. What d-did I do wrong?” The wretched woman had actually attacked her. Maybe not in the sense of conventional combat, but she was still emotionally wounded from the hostility and cruel words. No one had ever treated her that way before. Certainly the bandits hadn’t done her any better, but this was something new and incomprehensible for the red-haired archer. Her head hung low ad her eyes remained downcast, like a beaten animal. Had she been possessed of a tail, it’d certainly be tucked firmly between her legs. At best, the rigid tension was easing away as if she were a snowman melting into the novice’s arms, but her demeanor didn’t brighten to match. Her hunger was at least partly to blame, at least to the capacity of leaving her more prone to feeling down like this. She wasn’t really thinking about that though. For the moment, she only thought about the disgust the snobbish woman had regarded her with, and of gratitude for Kyra’s support.

As Lunie leaned into Kyra's hug and relayed briefly what had happened to her, Kyra felt herself getting very angry, but also protective. "Oh, Lunie, I'm so sorry.. If.. If I'd been there, I wouldn't let that person get away with it. I'd talk back to them and make sure they never talk that way they you! People like that are poisonous scum... You're such a sweet girl, and you definitely don't deserve that sort of emotional harm..." At that, Kyra hugged Lunie even harder, not letting go for a few moments, as she wanted to make her friend feel as safe as possible. "Here, c'mon, let me get you something to eat."
Though she didn't know food had been Lunie's reason for running off, Kyra figured it'd been long enough since they'd last eaten, as she too was pretty hungry. She also thought Lunie would simply appreciate a gift of food in the wake of what just happened. Heading over to a small street stand that was almost about to close, Kyra payed for a couple warm, medium sized sandwiches, handing one to Lunie, and stating into her own. "Dig in! We can head to the tavern for real this time while we eat. Here.." Taking a gentle but firm hold of Lunie's arm, she began walking towards the Rusted Flagon, "For both our sakes, please don't try and run off again. I was so worried about you.. The streets can be really dangerous at night, or so I hear. It'd be best if we're in a tavern or somewhere else safe when that night falls."

“I just w-wanted to find a great place to eat and surprise you. Ya took me to all these great places today and I thought if I could find one for you, it would make it up to ya. Since we didn’t get to finish eatin’ breakfast, I thought that’d be the best way. Soon as I left your side, I got lost though. Guess I messed it all up huh?” A halfhearted chuckle was all the huntress could muster with her feelings of guilt for worrying her friend. She felt bad for wandering off the way she did, even if her intentions were good. With her crying out of the way, it took little for her to bounce back to her usual happy self, though, especially with the promise of food. Enthusiastically getting back to her feet with a small hop, she followed after Kyra with somewhat exaggerated steps. Anyone watching would never have guessed that she’d been so distressed such a short time before.
As luck would have it, Selunae had been a single street away from a selection of food vendors. Many of them had packed up their goods for the night, but a few were still eager to get that last customer in before calling it a day. Everything smelled delicious, robust aromas filling the street with mouthwatering goodness. If the archer had been left to choose, everything would have been cold before she could make up her mind. If only she had went a street further, then the nasty business with stuck up woman would never have happened. Thankfully, for all the parties involved, Kyra was pretty clear on what she was buying. Selunae wouldn’t have even been able to pick something before dark, much less make it to the Rusted Flagon. Everything just looked and smelled so good when she was this hungry.
Selunae stared hungrily at the two sandwiches that Kyra had purchased, eyeing them like a wolf sizing up its prey. The scent of the succulent meat made her impatient, nearly to the point of snatching it up before it was offered to her. It should have been no surprise that she wasted no time in ripping into hers the moment she got her hands on it. The ferocity which which she began to consume her meal would have certainly made her seem reminiscent of the waif she had been mistaken for. She was absolutely using both hands to stuff the sandwich into mouth, mumbling something of which no syllables could be distinguished when the novice’s hand wrapped around her wrist to make sure she didn’t go astray again.
“Ah wonf du ith a’in.” The second attempt to speak didn’t go much better than the first, but there was at least some vaguely recognizable words this time. Finally taking the time to finish chewing and swallowing, the archer made a third attempt, though neither of the three attempts resembled the other. “No worries, I’m not gonna run off like that again. Guess ya could say I learned my lesson. Is Lucerne really that bad at night?” She’d never really heard anything of the sort before today, but she never actually visited the city anymore until now anyway.

"Aww, Lunie.. you hush... You didn't mess up a single thing. What matters is that I found you now, and I know you're alright. Thank you for the thought of wanting to do that for me though. It's very much appreciated nonetheless." Kyra did her best to make Lunie feel okay for what happened. She knew it wasn't Lunie's fault that she had such an insatiable curiosity, and maybe an admittedly scatterbrained mind. Kyra didn't care about those things though, because without them, Lunie would stop being, well, Lunie, and she wouldn't want that to be the case.
Once they had gotten to the food stand and Kyra had ordered a sandwich for each of them, she was amazed at how eager Lunie was to grab it. Even more impressive was the speed with which she ate, devouring a large portion of the food within a few moments. Wide eyed, Kyra began eating her sandwich at a mostly regular pace. She could almost feel pain in her jaw just from imagining trying to eat that fast. "Well, I take it you like the food then, huh? Heheh."
As the two girls began walking, the sun still somewhat above the horizon, but not for long, Lunie began asking about Kyra's comment about the streets of Lucerne at night. "Well, I mean, that's just what I've heard at least. My mother and a friend of mine would always talk about how bad it is, plus what happened to my father with those Ilians kind of deterred me from ever wanting to go out at night, even if my mother hadn't prevented me from doing so anyway. From what I know, certain parts of the city are rife with thieves and other unsavory folks. I think we should be okay though, especially travelling together, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Stopping for a second to finish up the last bites of her sandwich, Kyra turned to face Lunie. "So, uh, was there anything else on your mind that you wanna talk about? I suppose we can spare a bit of time before we show up at the tavern, and I feel like I've mostly just been a tour guide today, making sure we get to enough interesting places in a limited time. I just hope you didn't feel like I was ignoring you or anything." With that, Kyra gave Lunie a friendly smile as she awaited a response from the young huntress.

Once a good bit of sandwich had been devoured, the huntress was able to slow herself down and actually take time to converse. She felt somewhat less guilty about slipping away now with Kyra’s kind words, and it certainly put her more at ease as far as opening back up again. “Mm-hmm, it tastes so good! I wish I had more!” Selunae giggled cheerfully, the presence of both good food and a good friend still having a dramatic improvement on her mood. Of course, enjoying good food with good company was one of the simple pleasures that made the hardships of life worth enduring.
Enjoying another mouthful, Selunae took in Kyra’s explanation for her concerns of night dangers. Embarrassingly, it had slipped the archer’s mind what had happened to the novice’s father. That had been quite some time ago, though, and the Ilian occupation had been over for a while anyway. She had seen several figures who may or may not have been ‘unsavory’ though, come to think of it. Many of them had shuffled about without so much as a glance in her direction, but the ones that had turned their eyes upon her had made her feel uncomfortable, at least since she had been alone and lost at the time. Still chewing through the bread and meat she had stuffed her mouth with, all she could offer Kyra in reply was a simply nod and an affirmative sound in agreement.
Kyra seemed to be satisfied with Selunae’s assumed acceptance and moved on to a new subject, or rather passed the choice of subject to her. What did she want to talk about? There had been something earlier that bothered her. Oh, right. Back at the pet shop Kyra had a thousand yard stare at the bird cages. Was it okay to ask about that though? Well, the novice hadn’t come forward about it voluntarily yet. It seemed the only way to find out would be to bring it up.
“Hmm, oh uhh.. well.. now that ya mention it, I uhh.. was kinda wonderin’..” Could she really just ask Kyra like this? Would she get mad? The novice was smiling at her, right? Of course it would be okay. “Well, ya didn’t seem to be yerself for a bit there when we were at the back with that big raven. I was uhh.. wonderin’ if somethin’ was wrong.. Ya looked all sad, like ya remembered somethin’ bad. I was hopin’ ya’d tell me what was wrong, but ya just acted like nothin’ happened.”

When Lunie mentioned how she had been staring off into space around the raven earlier, Kyra halted her movement and stared blankly at the ground, her smile gone, but also not quite in a frown. "Ah, so you did notice that, huh? Well, if you must know, I was remembering a moment from when I was younger, when I was playing with my father behind our house. I had seen a raven up in a tree, and I asked him what it was. He told me, and explained to me how most people see them as an omen of death, but that it's just superstition spurred on by ignorant people. The thing is, before he took me inside, we had seen more ravens show up, and he seemed to get scared. It was strange, because they were all looking right at him. I don't know if it was for shadowing his own death years in advance, but thinking back on it, it certainly is a bit... unsettling."
Still standing in place, Kyra turned her head to face Lunie. "It's really not a big deal, honest. It just sorta stuck in my mind once I saw the raven up close. I think the scar over its eye might have also reminded me of my father's own battle scars. That memory though... it was something I'd remembered vaguely as the way I grew to appreciate ravens in a way that many seem not to, but now that I was reminded of it in more vivid detail, it seems like a more sinister moment in time, in hindsight." Shaking her head a bit, she continued, "I dunno, maybe we should just keep moving. I would hate to kill the mood with this sort of talk..."

The huntress’s eyes widened at Kyra’s explanation. “Oh.. I’m so sorry..! I didn’t mean to drag up any bad memories of your father. Guess I kinda walked into it though, askin’ a question like that of ya. What do you think though? You seemed to like that raven at the store. Do you think they are bad omens?” Selunae paused, but before Kyra could answer, she added a spooky tone to her voice. “Do you think we’re gonna die ..horrible deaths.. because of that raven?” The huntress emphasized the jest with a nudge and giggles. “Do you want to go back and get it, though? I don’t have much but I’m sure we can make enough to buy it someday. I think that hawk was pretty awesome too. We could be, like.. bird buddies or somethin’, ya know? ‘Sides, ya already said the thing wouldn’t survive in the wild.”
The archer munched on the remains of her sandwich as they continued along. She needed to get away from the subject of ravens and death. It secretly bothered her a lot. The gravity of what they planned to do could mean death for them if things went poorly, but she couldn’t afford to think of things that way. She had to keep a brave face, after all Kyra was expressing doubts and it wouldn’t do any good for them to drown in anxiety over this. Gotta stay positive. “So, um where ya plannin’ to go after all this is done? Need a goofy sidekick? Two lost souls against the world!” Selunae threw her arm up in an energetic fist pump, showing no concern for the attention she drew to herself from passersby. In moments like this, she believed the two of them could take on the entire world together.
