Yasin clasped Gar’s shoulder. He told the captain to be bold and do his best. Joury placed a well cultivated, purple flower in his hand. She claimed that girls can never have too many flowers. Gar raised an eyebrow at the time. Surely flowers will get boring at some point. Nonetheless, Joury shoved him out the door with a word of encouragement. Gar took a breath and started making his way back toward the academy.
In time, Gar stood outside the academy. A number of academics passed him by as he waited. Gar placed his arms at his sides, not knowing what else to do. Eventually, hooded figure approached him. Gar instinctively leaned back. Gar was tall. He had to lean forward and tilt his head to peer under the hood. Belinda
“Ready to go?
Gar’s eyes met Belinda’s. His heart fluttered for a second and a half before he gathered himself. Hopefully that didn’t show. “Ah. Umm” He couldn’t recall the last time that had happened.
“Aye.” She moved and spoke quickly, Gar followed before he knew he was moving. The pub was in the same direction of the docks. “Oasis? I like that spot. Their mead isn’t half bad.” Gar spoke. However, he had to stop for a moment. Gar exhaled through his nostrils.
“Hold on. Hold on. This is for you.” With a genuine, hopeful smile he reached into his coat to bring out a carefully protected purple flower. It was just a flower. “I think this is a Lilac? Or a lavender or something?” Gar looked for how she reacted and scratched his cheek. Hopefully he hadn’t overstepped his bounds.
“Whatever it is, I want you to have it.”

Bel stopped walking and took a moment to examine the flower. It was a flower with a long stem and a bunch of little purple flowers. A gift of flowers was uncommon here in Nabata. Most tend to wilt and wither away due to the harsh temperatures. So she suspected this one must have been grown in an indoor garden. Someone took the time out of their day to put good dirt into a vessel and grow something pretty. Or perhaps this was something that was grown with the work of the new tome that was floating around the academy. Flora if she remembered correctly.
"Delphinium." She spoke. Then quietly rummaged through her pack pockets for a small pin and pinned the little flower onto her lapel.
"You may know it by it's common name, Larkspur." Bel had fond memories of this little flowering plant. They used to grow wild in the yard of her family manor. They attracted all sorts of little insects and the occasional hummingbird. In literature these flowers symbolized all sorts of things depending on the color of it's petals. Love, laughter, innocence, she'd forgotten exactly what purple meant. But, she knew it meant something nice. She wasn't used to such small innocent little gifts to be given to her by grown men. She was used to this sort of gesture from her little niece and nephew. Now Bel was left to think about what this all meant. It could have meant that Gar thought giving flowers to a lady was just simply a nice gesture, or he was trying bribe her. She doubted the latter. Bel didn't have much to give in return, and she had already agreed to the whole.. body guard study job thing. But, she appreciated the gesture all the same.
"Thank you." She smiled softly. Then she made a small nod to follow and continued on the way towards Oasis.
"Ah, so you've been there before. Well, It is a popular sailor's hang out."
Bel looked at the path in front of her. Bustling with people as always. Eyes in every corner. Most that ignored her some that eyed her. The usual. The shaman pulled her hood down a bit more so that it hid her eyes from most. She didn't want people to know who she was eyeing. She didn't want them to see the small bits of jewelry on her face. Copper alloy was common.. inexpensive. But, it was shiny and sometimes that was all that was needed to garner unwanted attention. She kept her walking pace to match Gar's, just in case.

Gar tilted his head and squinted his eyes in thought. Delphinium didn't ring a bell for him. It didn't sound quite right. Regardless, he grinned as Belinda pinned the flower to her lapel. He was happy that she accepted the gift. He was gladdened further by the explanation. He was sure June would like to hear about it as well. He clapped his hands together and pointed in affirmation. "Aye, Larkspur that was it hahar. It would've bothered me if I couldn't remember the name."
As they resumed walking Gar noted that Belinda pulled her hood down a bit. He frowned briefly then shrugged. Busy port towns like this frown upon pirates. It was smart not to openly associate with a pirate captain. Especially if this was the place of one's work. Gar respected that.
On the other hand, she could've pulled her hood down to avoid wandering gazes. Eyes from the same pirates and thieves that gave Gar a bad reputation. He saw that Belinda was walking at his rate. Just in case, Gar kept his eye on the passersby. He decided to learn more of Belinda as they walked down the main thoroughfare. Making casual conversation, he spoke about her profession as an archivist. "You know I could never do what you do. I get antsy if I stay in the still for too long. How can you stay in one spot for that much time?" Gar's parents always said that he had the blood of the nomads in his veins. He thought for a moment and listened to Belinda's had to say on the matter.

"I do not stay in the library all day. Most of it involves going up and down stairs, delivery of books, organizing supplies, supervision.." She looked at Gar. And then came to the sudden realization he didn't actually mean sitting in one place.
"My apologies.. you mean staying in one city." She mused for a moment.
"I do have a second job. I am in the employ of another Captian. He usually ships merchant goods or passengers between Khan Yunis and Badon. I balance his books when he comes into port. And sometimes I hitch a ride back to Lycia. With permission from Akademia of course." She didn't mention she had family back in Lycia. No she wasn't quite comfortable revealing that information yet. She trusted Gar, yes. But, her family's reputation was unsavory. And she did not know how much attention her family name might draw. Even though it's been years since she ran into any trouble from her father's debtors. And as far as she knew her old man was dead. Or rotting in a prison cell.
The pair turned a corner and arrived at Khan Yunis famous market. Stalls upon stalls of various wares. The market street was a colorful feast for the eyes and painful experience for one's wallet. There were other roads that worked around the market, and led out to the docks. They often led across people's homes, other pubs, and some shady hideouts. Despite the crowds, the market was the quickest way to get to where they were going. --
OOC- Please feel free to jump cut us to the Oasis pub.

Gar listened to Belinda’s initial response, then her second. Gar understood that she traveled the seas with another captain. Hearing her say that rang a bell in Gar’s mind. “Oh that’s right. A Captain… Cid if I recall. You mentioned as much at the banquet.” Gar chuckled briefly, he should have remembered that detail. “Sorry it took me a second to remember.” A number of memories came back into his mind. In particular, they discussed how fancy people liked to complicate things. In that light, it was good that they were going to the pub and not a restaurant for fine dining.
At Oasis, the lighting was dimmer. That wasn’t saying much since the sun was incredibly bright in Nabata. Even more so with it reflecting off the sandstone in the city. The interior décor held a couple of trinkets that set the place apart from other pubs. Gar scoped out a place to sit. He moved to a table and sat down. There was a hum of noise from the other patrons and staff. Luckily, it wasn’t so late that the people had gotten into their cups and started talking and laughing too loud. Gar would typically be fine with that, but it would make it difficult to have conversation.
“So between your two jobs, how would you say your time is split up? Do you spend more time at the academy or at sea?” As the captain listened to the response, he noticed one of the waitstaff walking up. The person spoke to the two patrons. “What’ll it be to drink? And are ya planning on eating too?”

"No need to apologize. The banquet was a long time ago." Belinda commented. The Shamaness took a seat across from Gar. She removed her cloak and breathed a small sigh of relief. She hung the cloak on the back part of her chair. Belinda frequented Oasis often, she was on good terms with some of the staff. She liked the atmosphere here. And she secretly liked to overhear the gossip that drunken patrons would let slip.
"My time is unevenly divided. It costs money to travel. Thus, most of my time is spent land locked at the Academy. I try to make at least one sea voyage per year, but sometimes it simply isn't possible." Belinda remembered her first year in Khan Yunis. It was a mess. But, she managed to make the most of it thanks to budgeting. She was about to ask Gar another question, when the waitress approached the table. Bel didn't recognize this waitress. And it would seem that this waitress didn't recognize her either. That was fine. Bel knew pubs like this hire new staff all the time. Plus, she was only a few months back from her last adventure overseas. She mused for a moment.
"I'll have water please. And what's the catch of the day?" Belinda asked. Squid? Octopus? Crab? She hoped it was squid. Squid usually meant that there was squid ink pasta available. If the catch of the day wasn't to her fancy then she would simply order the fish stew. Once, the waitress took their orders, Belinda returned her attention to Gar.
"Well, now I must ask a few important questions. Since, we are going to be working with one another for a few days. I need to consider the safety of the students and staff who live and work within the school confines. As you know Akedemia is a mage academy. And I know from experience, that sailors are a superstitious bunch. The school educates it's students on ALL branches of magic. Do you have any issues with any magic?"

"We have both squid and flounder today. I think we also hauled in a swordfish earlier. " The waitress spoke in response to Belinda. "Ill take whatever mead you got and can you cook up some flounder for me?" The waitress took the orders and took her leave.
The conversation took a more serious turn. Apparently Belinda wanted to know some important things. Belinda asked if Gar had any issues with magic. It was a fair enough question. Sailors had been known to be superstitious indeed. "I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on magic. Its too complicated with spirits and chants and everything. I could never be a mage. I can tell you my thoughts on them though." Gar shrugged lightly as he spoke. " I guess I know the most about light magic. It is born from willpower, faith, hope. Whatever you want to call it, light magic is cool with me." Gar's own weapon utilized light magic. "I think the healing staffs also use light magic of some sort. I could be wrong though."
"Then there are uhh natural magics. Fire, wind, earth, lightning. I have a friend who practices these elemental practices. They're alright too."
Gar began to frown as he continued. "Finally there is elder magic. Dark magic." He had a tinge of disgust in his voice. "Its powerful, but vile. Corrupted." Gar shook his head. " They're called dark for a reason. No good can come from those tomes." The berserker took a moment. "The answer to your question is yes. Dark mages are no friend of mine."

Belinda went ahead and ordered the squid. Belinda quietly listened to everything that Gar had to say about magic. And while Gar didn't know it, his words hurt Bel. But, the shamaness, didn't show it. She knew that as an woman cut from a slightly silkier cloth then most, she needed to keep herself calm. Remember.. to keep an air of sophistication Bel. Keep your posture. Keep your composure. She just sat there and appeared to be thinking. She knew people did not fully understand the beauty and complexity of elder arts. And she didn't blame Gar for his attitude towards the issue. The world was full of people who hated dark magic. And if the rumors were true, there were monsters out there born from Nether magic. Part of her hated the craft too. But not for the superstitions it brought, but rather for the effects it has on the human body. The madness that is born from it. She knew this. She'd seen it first hand. And yet, no amount of outside influence would ever turn her away from the Elder Arts. Elder Magic was in her blood. It was a part of her history. The waitress returned and brought the pair their drinks. She welcomed the small distraction. She quietly gripped the handle of her water mug and took a sip. Damn it. I knew this little exchange between us was.. going too well.
Now, she needed to figure out how to proceed. The school teaches all magic. Dark Arts included. She needed to be sure that Gar didn't well.. wouldn't hurt anyone involved those who practiced the dark arts. At least not the ones who practiced on school grounds. And she needed to make sure Gar didn't hurt her either. As far as she could tell, it seemed that Gar did not yet know that she too was a shaman. A practitioner of those evil and wicked arts. The shaman put the mug of water back on the table. She wished she had ordered wine instead. Alcohol would have helped to dull the pain of her next few words.
"That's a shame." She spoke in a calm manner.
"I don't know what sort of personal grudge you have against the Elder Arts. And I will not pry into that. But, I need your full cooperation if we are to proceed forward. Akedemia teaches Elder magic. We have students who routinely practice the craft in the courtyards. Lectures are given on the subject. People research it as they do any other classical work." She explained.
"I cannot risk their lives and safety based on your.. attitude towards the subject." She tried to choose her words carefully. She turned away for a moment. She then returned her full attention to Gar. She looked him in the eyes as she spoke.
"And.. I'm sorry to say. I am a practitioner of those very arts you seem to hate. I study it not as a means to gain power. But, as a means to understand the cause and effect it does to the human mind. To see if there is a way to help ease the burden of the madness it seems to cause after prolonged use." She let that sit for a moment.
"In light of this new information. I can understand if you choose not to continue with our pre-arranged agreement."

Gar had seemingly made a mistake. He not only learned that the academy taught dark arts to children but Belinda herself also practiced the magic. Maybe it wasn’t a mistake, rather a miscalculation. Either way, it was all quite upsetting. Gar exhaled sharply. His thoughts swam in his head for a moment. Where's Jun? He silently reprimanded himself for allowing his weapon to be studied by a dark mage, intelligent as she was. Gar had been a fool. Such a fool.
Belinda spoke. She was a practitioner of the dark magics. Gar's weapon was a holy axe. The voice inside his head was overly righteous. But the weapon wasn't here now. Gar grunted his response. “A shame.” He clenched his jaw. What was I thinking? The Oasis waitress brought some drinks for the pair. Gar clamped his hand around the mug of mead and brought it to his mouth. He downed the beverage and signaled for another. “Arrr.” This Berserker scanned the place again, with a new perspective.
It was clear that Belinda wasn’t an enemy. Gar knew enough to know that Dark magic deteriorated the mind and soul of its wielder over time. Belinda stated as much herself. Even so. There was no way to know if or when she too would become too corrupted to be part enemie's ranks. Staying close to her just wasn’t worth the risk. “Aye. Our arrangement is finished.” Gar’s thoughts continued to move around. She's smart and so damn pretty… If only she hadn’t been a dark mage. Gar couldn’t understand why someone would risk their whole existence like that. That said, Gar wasn’t going to leave a woman to eat a meal on her own. Especially not a woman that he had come to trust.
“Lets go ahead and eat some food. Is that alright with you?”

"I could never really say no to food." Belinda commented. She was a bit upset that the conversation had soured so much. She was looking forward to talking to Gar about other things. But, she knew what ever her opinion on things would be marred by the simple fact she was a shaman. A true shame. But, she couldn't just let this sit. Not after he did allow her to examine axe and those notes are going into the archives one way or another.
"Still, I do wish to talk. I'll try to keep the conversation.. neutral. We may be on opposite terms when it comes to magic, but that is no reason for us not to be civil." She explained. Hopefully, Gar shared similar sentiments.
"You did, let me examine your axe. I can still get you the information you want about Naval Warfare. You won't have to set foot within the confines of the school. I can have a copies of those documents sent to your ship. Provided you are in port." Belinda explained. She hoped Gar would at least let her do that. She kept her hands wrapped around her mug of water. Her posture in the chair remained the same. Upright. Even though her back begged for her to slouch a little. She couldn't do it. Subconsciously, she was a bit nervous about this whole situation. She hoped Gar wouldn't become violent the longer she sat with him. But, this was for the best, she guessed. She did need to account for everyone else's safety. That was the responsible thing to do. Best to rip that bandage off early, rather than later.

Gar squinted his eyes as he tried to read Belinda’s facial expressions. They were difficult to read. He exhaled deeply and untensed his shoulders. The silence forced him to speak. Gar had to say something. “Aye.” Was what he came up with. Gar’s eyes looked at Belinda’s in an effort to understand her. True understanding was increasingly difficult with these new revelations. If someone had told Gar a year ago that he would be breaking bread with a dark mage…
She’s smart… Smarter than I am. She knows what she’s doing with this wicked witchcraft… Right?
I can have a copies of those documents sent to your ship. Provided you are in port.
“Sounds fair to me.” Gar was suspicious enough to make sure his own people transcribed the information held within these books. “Ill send my own scribes to record the information.” He would not allow any unknown person on his ship. Gar was being overly cautious dealing with a known dark mage.
Gar still had a number of questions to ask Belinda. Even so, he turned toward the bartender and asked “Can you get the lady a glass of wine already?”
The waiter brought out some steaming hot food. Gar’s nostrils reacted instinctively. It smelled good. Fantastic even. He had to leave the food to sit for a minute, allowing it to cool off. The food was accompanied by a glass of ‘wine’ for Belinda and a 'mead'. At least is was what passed for wine and mead. Gar was content either way, he smiled widely and raised a glass.

Belinda went ahead and ordered herself the squid meal. She knew it was going to be the squid, some sort of grain, and a sauce. That was the standard fare when it came to the pub food.
"Fair enough." Belinda replied back to Gar's comment. It seems that the Captain would not trust her copies. She calmly ignored that a fact and focused on what was in front of her. The waitress returned with their orders. Belinda's meal consisted of bits of squid. Fried in a little bit of oil. There were little bite size pieces of potato. She spied some pickled capers. A few bits of black pepper. The sauce smelled like faint white wine. It was no squid ink spaghetti, but was it's own heaven on a plate. Gar did something surprising, he requested that Belinda had some wine. Wine, cheese, and sweets were her guilty pleasure. Those foods were childhood reminders of her old life back in Lycia. A life that enjoyed some of the more finer things that were unavailable to the common people. Not that those foods weren't available to the common man, but, they were symbolic of decadence. Tasty. Tasty decadence. Belinda requested her own wine. A simple white wine to go with the light flavors of the fish. Red wine would have been too flavorful.
"Thank you." She waited for the server to pour her a glass of wine. She raised the glass to clink it with Gar's mead.
"To safe travels." That was something that sounded very neutral. She took a good sip of the wine and put the glass back down on the table. She quietly griped her fork and fixed a small piece of squid onto it's tines. She blew on the piece softly then popped the morsel into her mouth. Delicious! She felt herself relax a bit. She repeated the act a few more times before feeling the urge to talk again.
"So, tell me about your travels. With the exception of Nabata, I've never traveled past Lycia's borders. How do the waters beyond Lycia fare?" Are the rumors true.. Are there really monsters roaming across the lands? Ghost ships?

“Aye, safe travels for all.” Gar brought his drink to his lips. He was glad that she was still willing to drink with him despite their different perspectives. What a thoughtful toast Gar drank and turned his sights toward his food. He had forgotten that he ordered flounder. Regardless, he quickly cut into it and took a bite.
“My travels typically aren’t pretty. Sailing west often ends in a battle. Someone there needs what you have. They’re usually willing to fight for it.” Gar took another bite before he kept speaking. “Either that or Etrurian ships want to get involved.” Gar grunted. “Those people need their hands in everything for some reason.” The captain shook his head.
“Then moving east. Sailing to Badon is one thing. There is lot of… lets say secure motion in those seas. I’ve seen some lordlings and rich merchants needing passage. They typically have guards. I’d also recommend keeping away from ports leading to Ostia.” Everyone had to know how dangerous that was these days. Gar took a bite of his food and a sip of his drink. “East of Lycia would be Bern.”
“From what I hear, they won a war or something. Naturally wars are taxing so, I can’t imagine they have a strong naval presence.” Gar didn’t know why he was divulging this information. Saying it out loud did have a way of reaffirming his thoughts. The area probably had petty pirates and such. It wouldn't be long before they got handled.
Gar had also sailed up to Sacae before. He decided not to mention any of that. Gar sighed. “ I’ve been talking too much, huh?” He tried to read Belinda’s reactions once again. “ Tell me about some of your voyages with Cid. ”

Belinda listened to Gar talk about his travels. She was genuinely interested in what he had to say. The Captian seemed to be well versed in the various coast lines and seas of Elibe. That didn't stop her from eating politely though. She took pauses in between her bites whenever he spoke. Just to make sure the chewing did not mince his words. She commented where she could.
"Eturia. Ever the menace. From what Cid's told me. He used to run his trade ship up to Ligure. But, then the government changed hands and it became too difficult for him to gain the needed paperwork. Such a shame too. He was very fond of their wines. Supposedly, it was some of the sweetest wine on the continent." No doubt better then the wine that's currently in my glass.
"The inability to effectively trade with Eturia has also impacted traded with Caledonia. Ore here is expensive because of it. Since, most of it needs to go through the land route. And those who do maintain relations with Eturia charge an arm and a leg for it." Then he spoke of Badon. And Belinda wasn't sure if he knew her own history regarding Lycia's most famous port city. Her childhood city. Her first home. Part of her missed living in their large villa in the country side. But, that was ancient history now.
"I wasn't aware Ostia had a port to begin with. Mountains on one side.. though I suppose the river northwards does have a connection to the sea. But, isn't Ostia desolate now? A volcano of some kind destroyed it?" Belinda wasn't sure what had happened there. And anyone who recounts the story of Ostia tells it's story differently. A great battle. Then some sort of horrible natural disaster. Some say it was ruined by a meteor. Others say a volcano. Divine intervention by Elimine herself? What ever it was she knew it left Ostia as a sort of no-man's land. A land where the undead are said to spawn from. Born of black magic. The vengeful souls of the dead who could not escape the city's fate. As she thought about it a chill went up the shaman's spine. She banished the chill with a sip of wine. The semi sour spirit brought her right back to normal.
"I've never been to Bern. But, sailors speak of the aftermath of the war against Illia. Bern reclaimed their independence and are starting to rebuild. Which is good. Hopefully Cid can establish a sort of relationship with what ever new power happens to be in place there. If he does then that would be great. Because, I am curious to meet a wyvern in person."
Belinda was about half way though her plate when Gar decided to shift the conversation back to her. What were her adventures with Cid?
"Cid's travels are safe." Boringly so. She paused for a moment.
"That is to say any time I've been on his ship.. the travels have been safe. Except for this one time. We were ambushed by pirates just as we were on the cusp of Badon waters. Fortunately, Cid's crew, myself, and my guards, managed to route them before the ship sustained any major losses. Cid isn't fond of murder. Rather then kill all the pirates, his crew sabotaged their ship, so that it stayed afloat but remained motionless. He left the survivors stranded in those waters." I've no idea what became of them. she put her now empty wine glass to the side. She was less tense now. Comfortable talking to Gar about ships, travels, and oceans. So long as the conversation did not stray into talks about magic things were good.
"Not much else in terms of excitement I'm afraid. I've been in his ship during a storm a few times. Those experiences were not pleasant."

Gar made a mental note of this wine from Ligure. Belinda apparently knew much about the trade between Etruria’s crops and Caledonia’s ore. Certainly, Gar’s antics had something to do with that interruption. Bullring’s slave labor mine had become Gar’s fair payment mine. “Ore should have an expense... We work hard to pull it out of the earth.” The price of ore went up when it stopped getting mined by slaves. Belinda didn’t need to know all that. The conversation continued toward Ostia.
“You’re right, Ostia doesn’t have a port. I just avoid the coasts and rivers closest to the former city.” Belinda asked more about Ostia. “I honestly don’t know what happened out there.” He took a sip and shook his head. “ I hope I never have to find out how it got that way.” Gar drank again to chase away the downhearted feelings.
Belinda progressed to respond to Gar’s remarks of Bern. She mentioned that there was indeed a war between Ilia and Bern. Bern came out on top. She also spoke of wyverns. Ilheod right? The one that fought the green swordsman before I did. Gar shared his experience. “Those Bernese Wyverns are something. I’ve only seen one. Same for Ilia’s Pegasi. They fly so high and fast it’s hard to track them.” Gar kept speaking without really thinking about it. “At least with paladins and great knights they’re in front of me.” Gar was comfortable talking in between bites of flounder.
“I should go to more arenas and keep an eye out for these mounted fighters.” Gar fixed his posture. “I shouldn’t be talking about battles right now.”
Belinda went on to answer Gar’s inquiry about how travels were with her and Cid. It was as pedestrian as Gar had expected. That is, until she mentioned a group had attacked them at some point. Gar furrowed his brow briefly.
“If that happens again, mention my name. It’s made people think twice before hahar.” Gar laughed but if someone jumped Cid’s ship with Belinda aboard, the berserker would sink their whole crew.
Gar finished his food and drink and looked toward Belinda’s empty wine glass. He pointed to his empty mug. “Another round?”
