There was an itch that Liam could not reach. It was stuck on the back of his brain, the dragon would have scratched his skull till he could reach it if it would help but he knew it wouldn't. He had seen a relic from the past, his past, some time ago. There was a boy with blue hair wearing a shield that he saw in the time prior to the Scouring, one that had once belonged to his adopted son. Once Julius had passed away the sword and shield had been a family heirloom, passed down from father to the eldest son.
The boy with the blue hair with the shield must be one of Julius' descendants and something had told Liam he should seek out the boy and reunite the shield with the sword. There was only a single problem with that, Liam didn't human very well but he did have a friend that could. He would have to use the excuse of wanting to see little Julius, the wyvern pup, in order to talk to her again. After the battle with the Bael Liam had stuck around long enough to heal up a bit before he left in the middle of the night. He had left Julius behind as well as instructions of how he would like the young wyvern to be raised and if it wasn't followed by the T he'd take him back by force.
He hadn't been back since he had left, so he figured Aria would be pissed at him but he still needed her help. The giant of a man walked to the front door and knocked, unsure of who would answer it.

She wasn't home. Well, she was home, as in she was somewhere on the family's property. Mindlessly, doing some-sort of menial task to help keep the ranch going. The boy who did answer was one of Aria's cousins. The teenager whom the family agreed was a bastard child of their second son. But, he was family none the less and they treated him as such. He was older then the two twins and was often seen as the voice of reason between them. He opened the door slightly to peek at the man at their door.
"Oh. It's you." He tilted back a bit and looked around. No one was with him. The young man had a bit of a frown.
"She's kinda.. upset at you. Uh..Most of us are." He sighed. Closed the door, undid the lock and stepped out.
"But, ya got the gall to come back, must be important." He led Liam out towards the back of the house.
"Follow the south path out towards the feed pens." He pointed down the path.
"Chew's somewhere with her. Ya find her, ya find Aria."
And with those directions, the boy returned to the house.
Her body was still pretty sore after the incident with the bael. Who's fangs were put on a plague and now adorned the space above the fireplace. The twins were recovering quickly. Chewy's wounds had recovered. All she had left of the attack was a long white scar that will eventually regain it's reddish color over time. Maybe. Aria was excited to get back out there and accompany Liam on the rest of his way. While she did appreciate being home, she quickly got sick of all of the attention they had gotten in the aftermath of the Bael. Almost, overnight the story of the 'Bael puncher' swept through Lucerne and her various provinces like a wildfire. And the ranch became a bit to popular for her liking. People came from everywhere to hear the tale from the survivors. To which the twins and were happy to recount. Each different then the last. And conveniently ignoring the fact that they weren't there when Liam punched the fangs out of the bael. Aria had to thank them. Their constant retelling of the story helped to keep people away from her. The patrols around the ranch were redoubled. The Wyverns were slowly moved into pens closer towards the center of the ranch.
But, Liam had left them. And with him, were her reasons for leaving. He left little Julius with Aria's family under the explicit orders not to be used as a wyvern mount. Which Aria could respect. The family managed to find him a surrogate mother. One of Chewy's sisters. And little Julius was slowly adjusting to life as part of a nest. And while the family would respect Liam's orders NOT to train Julius as a mount. They still had to train him to get used to people. He needed to get used to the ranchers. To their tools. To grooming. And basic behavior training. His new surrogate siblings would teach him all about the highs and lows of being a baby wyvern. Play fighting, dominance, calls, whistles, clicks, and flying. The hardest part was on Aria. As she had to steadily put some distance between her and Julius. And despite her best effort she did have a bond with the little guy. It was especially hard on Chewy too.
Aria's father determined that Julius, if he survived to adult hood, would become a stud wyvern. An un-castrated male who would spend most of his adult life in a sort of hedonistic daze of feasting on good food and breeding with as many female wyverns as he could. Father hoped his unusual colors would blend in with their stock creating a dazzling array of show wyverns that could eventually be sold to nobility.
As Aria shoved another pitchfork full of hay into one of the pens she found herself thinking. Thinking about what she should be doing. She thought about chasing after Liam. But, remembered that she couldn't. The dragon was good at avoiding people. And both she and her were grounded for at least another week. The family didn't exactly take to well to Liam leaving either. This led to spiraling and depressing discussions about Aria's future as a spinster among other things. Her parents didn't want her getting hurt like that again. And while her brothers defended her, they couldn't do much else. They called her out for her abnormal behaviors. The spiraling arguments between children and parents replayed themselves in her own head. And she found herself crying as she worked.

The nerve of the human child of scolding him for returning. This was Aria's home, not Liam's so he didn't stick around. Plus there was too many young ones who didn't exactly control their voices as well as they should which disrupted the silence Liam was extremely used to as well as comfortable with. The largest reason he didn't stick around was the fact it was a ranch designed in training wyverns as weapons of war.
He remained silent as the boy talked, only shooting him a look of disappointment for attempting to scold the dragon. Liam followed the path he had pointed out leading to Aria where he saw her from behind shoving hay into a pen. "Honey, I'm home?" Liam said jokingly with arms spread out. He figured she'd be sour seeing him out of the blue after leaving like that so he attempted to lighten the mood a bit.
He lowered his arms to his side as he started to walk towards her. "I'm sorry for leaving like that, just needed my space. I've heard stories about the fight with the Bael, kinda glad I went poof. People would have probably thought it was me who tore them out with my size." He stopped far enough he could dodge the pitchfork if she felt the need to wack him with it. "But those stories aren't why I'm here, well I would like to request they stop telling them but that can hold off for now. I need your help with human stuff." He placed his hands on his waist waiting on her reaction.

Chewy looked up at the figure approaching Aria. Chewy wasn't well versed in the feelings of humans. But, she understood Aria. She saw Aria search for Liam around the ranch. Around town. And she saw Aria become very upset about him and her family in the aftermath of the bite. She knew Aria mad at Liam for something. And figured it was due to his sudden disappearance. But, Chewy was a wyvern concerned with other wyvern things. Like, little Julius, and galavanting about with others of her kin.
The big red brick of a wyvern kinda wanted to tackle Liam there though. Chewy missed Liam. Even if Aria wasn't particularly glad to see him. Fortunately, for Liam though, Chewy was busy eating. She was picking bones clean of some hapless farm animal. Before moving on to chewing and eating the bones themselves.
Aria on the other hand. Stood there glaring at him. Her face was still wet with tears. And red in a mix of frustration and embarrassment. She pulled off one of her work gloves and wiped her face with her clean hand.
“Don't you hey honey me.” She put the glove back on and resumed working.
“No, hey, how are you doing? No, hey, how's my wyvern son? No, how’s everyone else? No thank yous? Just jumping straight into a you problem. You… you.. selfish jerk.” Guess i'm just a whole lot of nothing to everybody. Insignificant. Burdensome. She violently stabbed the hay bush, scooped up its fibers and tossed it into a wagon.

The Scouring was what, 900? 1000? years ago? The death of his wife was a few hundred years before that if he could take a wild guess at it. Point is, it's been a loooooooong time since he's actually lived with another person, and once she passed away he typically stuck to himself since then so being polite wasn't in his vocabulary anymore. A part of him wanted to lay into Aria about calling him a selfish jerk, the family she knows is alive and has the ability to see them whenever she wants. The only "family" he has is connected to his adopted son's blood line that he cannot strike up a conversation when he pleases. This is the second time he's been to Aria's home, and it's already being associated with fighting, first the Bael and now with Aria.
The main reason he didn't because it would prove her point that he's a selfish jerk. Instead he walked up to her backside and wrapped his arms around her while bending over some, pulling her close. "I'm sorry. If it makes you feel better, you're still my favorite human." Letting go while standing up straight and taking a step back, in case she felt the need to wack him he'd let her, this time. Luckily for him, the only time he can feel empathy still is when it comes to anger. "That's the only reason I came here, I need help with something and you're the only human that I can trust. Once we're done, I'll try to make it up to you, dragon's honor."

This was unexpected. Liam actually hugged her. He hugged her. And for a moment, she was completely immobilized by the sweet gesture. And then it suddenly dawned on her what the whole thing actually meant. It meant that Liam was completely serious about needed her help with human things. And while she was still kinda mad at him, she was now a bit more willing to hear what he had to say. She took a deep breath in, held it for a moment, and quietly let it out before raising her arms and swatting his hands off of her.
"Okay." She took another deep breath in. And it sounded kinda like her nose was full of snot. She wasn't quite in the right emotional state yet. But, her mind and body were starting to take steps in the right direction.
"Don't make me regret this.." She sighed, then turned around.
"I know you trust me and I trust you too. Just.. don't go off in the middle of the night like that with out saying ANYTHING. Geeze. I know your human skills are terrible. I don't exactly like getting tossed aside like a sack of potatoes. And I was worried. I know.. you aren't human. But, I don't know who else doesn't.. does.. not know that! And with all of these guests coming around the ranch. I thought the worst. I mean I know.. you can take care of yourself and all.. but.." She stopped talking and wiped the budding tears off her face with her arm.
"You.. aren't invincible. And I.." I don't know why I'm even saying all this! Why is it making me feel worse? She took a took a stuffy breath through her nose. She took another few moments to calm herself.
"I know.. you.. aren't huggy... touchey... feely either. So.. what ever.. this help you need.. it must be something pretty damn important." She looked at Liam with a bit of a frustrated expression.
"I'm not agreeing to anything. But, I will listen to your request."

"Aside from when we first met, where I rescued Julius' egg on the mountain path," Some would say he stole the wyvern egg, to him he saved it from a life of being a tool. "as well as that town in Lycia I haven't used my draconic powers since... Probably the Scouring. I can fool the others from the mountain that it was some kind of magic like I told you, the two others in Lycia I can spin the truth to a lot of crazy crap was going on, are they sure it was a dragon they saw."
Part of him wanted to wipe the tears forming on Aria's eyes, but he listened to the part of him to keep his hands to himself. The woman in front of him had appeared to be very attached to him, he began to hate himself for breaking his habits and talking to her. Assuming he survived another encounter with the black skinned creatures he would more than likely out live her, he would spend her time on her death bed aside her and having to move on. The curse of aging at a much slower rate than humans was a terrible thing. One would think this old wyrm would have learned his lesson after generations of his son's family coming and going.
"I'm not sure if you remember him, but there was a blue haired boy at that wyvern festival a while back we went to. He had a shield with him. It belonged to Julius, my son, at one point in time. I think I remember where part of the Kalias family lived a few decades ago. I want to find him, but don't know what to say. You have a large, and nice family and I was hoping you could help me talk to him."

Aria wasn't sure why she wasn't even crying anymore. Liam was back, she should be happy for that. And He needed her help. She took another deep breath in, then swatted him off of her. She turned around to face him and did her best to try and act calm. He was still being kinda sorta selfish. Sure, she knew they can spin a tale to cover up his freaky fire powers. And the twins who were spreading the story weren't there to witness the events. So, while people were talking about Liam's prowess, they were all conflicting stories. And that helped to hide the truth. Unless, her brother's wyvern started to talk human and correct everyone. That will never happen.
She did one more wipe of her face to clear away any lingering tears. Then huffed. She remembered the boy in the festival. She remembered being really confused when Liam called him Julius, even though Julius the wyvern pup was with them.
"Your wyvern son Julius is fine by the way." She spoke with a bit of annoyance in her voice.
"We found him a surrogate mum. So, he's gonna grow up wyvern. With a bunch of other wyvern pups that are roughly his age. Despite our best efforts to rear him wild, he got spoiled by us. And he gets picked on by his new siblings. He's learning how to fight em off though. Typical sibling wyvern stuff." Talking about Julius helped to calm her down a bit. Something to keep her mind off of the fact she kinda embarrassed herself there for a few minutes.
"Not sure what my family has got to do with you helpin to find yer.. lost.. heirloom.. people.." She stopped for a moment.
"Descendants." Words. Why were words always so difficult to say when one was upset over something. She remembered not saying too much of anything when interrogated at all sides by her family. Gods. They were all so damn nosy. Though she knew they were only looking out for her but still. Sometimes she wished they'd but out and stop giving her their opinions on how she should run her own life. She rubbed her eyes again.
"Sorry." Breathe.
"Though if this family is Bernese. You can always open up a conversation by talking about wyverns and go from there." She shook her head.
"The kid was at a festival for all things wyvern ya know." She smiled softly. The festival was fun. She looked at the floor for a moment and thought.
"I.. I'll go with you." She decided.
"Though, you gotta give me a day.. maybe a day and a half to pack and dismiss myself from my home. I love my folks and my family and all. But, they can be so protective. It's suffocating. It's one of the reasons why I keep coming and going. It's why.. I kinda got mad that you took off without me. I don't exactly like leaving here with out a reason."

"The only son I had is long dead" He countered to her comment about his wyvern "son". Humans are weird, they view 'pets' as children. to Liam wyvern were a cousin race to his own, he was doing the pup a favor and saving it from humans. Perhaps that's the reason why Aria had treated the wyvern far better than he had saw normal Bernese soldiers treat them, which could also be the reason why he's grown fond of this human.
"Don't spoil him too much, if he wants to eat he's gotta earn it. Feral wyverns know their place on the food chain, if they wanna eat they gotta show their dominance in the wild. If he wants to fight his 'siblings' let'em. In the wild they want an area to claim as their own, they have to know how to defend it."
There was something about Aria's smile that placed Liam at ease. He's survived in an age where people hated his race because of a war he didn't want. While he viewed humans as the lesser race, he didn't want harm to come to them despite of them winning the war with weapons that wrecked havoc to everything.
"There's a bond that most families have, one that allows them to look past each other's faults and accept who they are. That's something I haven't experienced since I allowed Julius to take his frustrations out on me. Like you said, your family is protective of you, that's a family trait. To those people, I'm some crazy man looking for one of their own, I'm not their family."
Liam was determined to look for the boy, with or without Aria, but her accepting his request calmed his nerves a lot. He wasn't exactly great when it came to dealing with humans outside of bartering. With her he had some sort of edge. "Take all the time you need. I don't want to rush you." After what had happened in the forest, he did wonder what Aria told her family. He didn't want to press the issue at the moment due to the amount of emotional distress he already put her through.

"Not that me and my family spoiled. We spoiled him." She pointed at herself and Liam.
"You say that. But, wyvern Julius sees you as his parent. Wether you like it or not. But... it's been a difficult transition period for everyone. Chewy nearly fought the surrogate mum for custody till we pulled them apart." She pointed to the big red pain wyvern pain in the ass, that was looming around her. It was weird that she was starting to feel better.
"Family is crazy. Complicated. And Confusing. You can't really live with them, can't live without them." She spoke and shoveled another bit of hay out of the way. She knew she loved her family dearly but they could be overwhelming. And she knew they wanted only the best for her. But, sometimes, they fail to consider her desires, they smother her with their own ideals. It's why she trained to become a knight, though the war took that opportunity away.
"Well then I'll be taking an extra day of prep work then. Since, yer being kind with your offer. I know you must be.. uh.. anxious about wanting to meet this kid. But, You've traveled with me long enough to know how hard it is to get a whole wyvern up and moving. I'll fetch you a map so you can start figuring out what area you kinda sorta remember." Ah yes, her on and off again farmer's accent. Her heritage liked to rear it's ugly head whenever she was excited, upset, or nervous about something. Or sometimes for no reason what so ever. --- With the departure date set, Aria went to work. She broke the news to her family that she'd be leaving again. And that she was still going to do the job she originally agreed to do. She was going to take Liam to his family. Though she left the destination vague and gave basic answers to their prying questions. But, in the end, they couldn't stop her from leaving. They knew if she they tried, she just fly off in the dead of night. And probably never return. They were all stubborn and mule headed that way. Aria spent the last two days prepping for the trip. She gave Liam a map and a book about Bern and it's territories. Hopefully something in those pages might jog his memory of where his former family lived. Just so they wouldn't end up circling around Bern for years. She did what ever work needed to be done around the farm. She sold a trinket of hers for a little extra cash for the trip. The rider stockpiled what provisions she needed to get by for at least a day or two. She knew Liam and Chewy to be a good hunters. So, she knew food was at least taken care of. The rider packed some extra material to repair her lances. Flint. A good sleeping bag. A large tarp that could be converted into a tent. And what ever other provisions she remembered from her military training. She met Liam at the city limits of Lucerne. It was far enough away to avoid most of the usual foot traffic. But, still within the view of the city's guard. Not the best spot for a meet up. But, not the worst.

Aria had claimed that "we spoiled him" while pointing to the two of them, he had done no such thing. "How do you think 'we' spoiled the pup?" He had wanted to add more, but it would have sounded like he was the wyvern's mother which would have proved Aria's point. C-A-R-E-T-A-K-E-R, that's what Liam was, not parent. He let out a faint sigh, he did not wish to anger the girl any more than he already had done so he let that argument slide for today.
Liam was tapping his foot while he waited for Aria to return with a map so he could see if he could find the city Julius's family lived near last time he checked in on them. Eyeballing the map he decided to make some small talk. "I don't think you need your family, so to speak. I mean I've been alive for a long time now and been on my own for a while." While he appreciated the kind act of bringing the books out, he knew what kind of landmark he was looking for so the history of Bern wouldn't help him, even if he could read human language. It was south west of Bern, the capital not the country.
Pointing to the map "It's somewhere around here. I remember the eldest son going a little bit further south to a mining town last time I was around." Liam had vaguely remembering the boy arriving to the festival on a wyvern, the way it had acted was different than the others. It had seemed more feral than the other wyverns, was it possible the boy was able to train a wild wyvern as a mount? He thought about bringing little Julius with them but decided against it.
---
Liam had met Aria where she had wanted, traveling light. Very light, bringing only himself and a few small tools for survival as well as Julius. "Hello Aria, how are you today?" He had said as she approached him, didn't want her to get mad like the last time. He waited for a response before continuing. "Sooo... Do you have any idea of how we could approach them?"

Aria gave Liam a wave as he approached. She was busy reviewing the various straps and buckles that were attached to Chewy. Everything seemed to be in order. She was dressed up in her usual attire. Her mix and match well worn armor adorned her body. Her hair was braided in a low ponytail. Chewy herself was saddled and ready to go. She was freshly groomed, washed, and now sported along sort of blanket underneath her saddle.
"Good Morning Liam." She spoke to him in a more casual tone. Her mood had improved within the last twenty four hours. She didn't get any of her family's blessings. But, at least they didn't argue or yell at her like they usually did. As a matter of fact the adults practically ignored her. Which meant that they were mad at her. The younger members of her family though they seemed to understand her need to go. It was them who helped gather the supplies needed for the journey. They who helped to groom Chewy. They who helped to clean and polish Aria's armor. The only thing they asked from their aunt was for her to return safely. To return and bring them back new stories.
"Oh, how to approach your distant family. Yeah, I didn't think about that. Figured we cross that bridge when we got there." She spoke and gave Chewy one final run down.
"Alright. Chewy is good to go. And.." It was at this point she got a good look at Liam.
"You.. haven't brought anything.. extra. Good! That makes things easier. Store what ya have in the saddle bag. Then climb on." She motioned to a specific bag on Chewy's side. The rider then hopped on the saddle and strapped herself in. She waited for Liam to follow suit.

Liam's normal every day carry items included a knife, some fishing line, a hook, and some flint. Today in also included a couple pairs of change of clothes since he wanted to look his "best" for his distance relative that he kept in a small sack. Aria had suggest that he place them in the saddle bag, would would provide to be a better idea than possibly losing them midair, "Thanks." Liam said as he placed his sack in the saddle bag. He didn't say it to make her happy, but to practice his "manners" for when they found the blue hair kid, if they did.
"I guess you could say we're going to just 'wing it' once we get there?" Liam gave an over exaggerated wink with the whole turning his head so his eye faced her, if he had tried to give her a wink it would look like he was blinking, at his "dad joke". As he got on the saddle behind aria he wrapped his massive arms around the small girl, locking his hands together near her mid section. The sight of the two on top of the wyvern must have slightly awkward looking as it felt for him.
A man his size holding onto a woman that he dwarfed in terms of body mass and height. He hoped not too many people saw the two, not that he cared too much outside of his ego. "How long do you think it will take us to get there?" Liam asked, he wasn't accustomed to Chewie's flying speed with the weight of the two on her back nor her normal fly speed compared to his in general.

"As a wyvern rider, I can assure you. Winging it is what we do best. The joke and terrible gesture wasn't lost on Aria. She merely shook her head and lightly rolled her eyes. For Aria, winging it or 'just figuring stuff out as we go' was her daily approach to life. It was one of the reasons why she disliked the life of a true knight. The monotony, the orders, the formations... she didn't deny it's usefulness. She tolerated it because it was her duty. Because it was stable. And by the saint she hated it.
"If the maps are accurate.. and my math is right.. I can estimate that the trip will take us about three to four days. Barring weather any other distractions." Distractions. The world was full of them. Aria's immediate list of distractions included, monsters, bandits, territorial wild wyverns, and pesky border patrols. Aria hoped that they would not run into any of those things as they traveled. The border patrols wouldn't be too much of a problem as Aria had all her papers in order to be on Chewy. And Chewy recognized Aria as her rider. Liam wasn't traveling with Julius anymore so they wouldn't appear as wyvern smugglers. Bandits were a persistent problem in Bern, more so after the war. Desperation would drive even the most meek of villagers to take up the axe and steal for a living.
"Alright. Ready. Hold on. And here we go!" Aria wasn't going to explain to Liam how to hold her while she was flying. He should know by now considering how long they've been traveling with each other. Aria took a deep breath in and let it out. Then she lightly tapped Chewy with the heel of her boots and the stationary wyvern almost to spring to life. She let out a light roar to signal that she was about to fly. She pushed her body upwards and flapped her enormous red wings. She circled around for a moment to get her bearings and steadily made her way upwards into the sky. She flew up past the tree line and took off in the direction Aria guided her to.

The next four and half days had been pretty uneventful, they stayed in the skies for what felt like ages, only stopping to give Chewy a break and sleeping. Liam had asked Aria to land when he could see the town in the distance with a red wyvern flying above in circles above the town, alone. "We'll go the rest of the way on foot, should take about half an hour. That wyvern flying above the town, it didn't have a rider yet it didn't look like it was looking to attack anything or anyone in the town."
As the two made it closer to the town, there had been a fence built around the town, it had looked semi newish. It wasn't that well built, just logs stuck in the ground with enough space to see through but too small for somebody to squeeze through and at the "gate" was a perch. Upon the perch stood the wyvern he saw flying above the town. Judging by the size of the wyvern and how 'protective' it seemed to be of the town something had to happen and it was loyal to someone inside. It had just sat there, watching them silently only breaking it's silence to let out a honking noise as the three entered the town. Liam could hear it shifting in place to turn around to watch them. He was guessing it was 'warning' the town of outsiders. The few people he could see outside shot a glance towards the gate when they heard the wyvern, some going back to what they had been doing as if this was normal and a couple keeping their eyes on Aria and Liam due to the fact they had a wyvern traveling with them.
Liam approached an older woman and had asked "Is there anyone by the family name Kailas heres?" The older gentleman next to her began to glare at Liam and Aria he spoke pretty rudely. "Whatever you two want, you need to leave now. That family has put up with a lot, they aint needin your crap." Liam looked towards Aria as if he was asking if he could throat punch the old dude.
