Name: Remel
Class: Thief
Dragon Element: N/A
Age: 23
Born in: The dreary township of Farpost, in the West Isles.
Appearance: A tall, lithe, and pale young man of average stature. Slim build with muscular frame. Adorned in a dark coat with an ominous black hood to shroud himself in the night. Removing the hood reveals a handsome young face with a clean shaven breadth of blue-black hair. His eyes are dark grey.
Personality: A true criminal at heart. Greedy, ambitious and sociopathic, but at the same time cold and calculating about it. Has learned from a young age how to feign kindness and take advantage of others and their goodwill. Usually carries a laid back and easy demeanor about himself, disguising his cold observations as comical wit. He finds this false mask to be charming and non-hostile, lowering others' guards.
History: Remel's story begins with a love story, as with the story of any human. His father was a traveling mercenary who was hired to deal with the bandit problem the town had (and still has), while his mother was the daughter and helper to a proud farmstead couple. The two met on a fateful day, when his mother was at the Breadville marketplace selling fresh goods until the daily routine was halted by a sudden bandit attack on the marketplace. His father happened to be among the defenders, and joined the guard in fighting off the bandits and escorting the innocent to safety. This was the moment the two laid eyes on each other, and soon after the incident was resolved kept in touch. Love was born between the mercenary and the farmhand, but Remel's grandparents did not approve of the unison, as they had planned to marry the daughter to a local retainer's son. The grandparents at first attempted to cut off the relationship, but were too late to stop their daughter from not only losing her virginity but also conceiving a child. The grandparents scoffed, and disowned their once beloved daughter before casting her out. Remel's father took his love under his wing and married her soon after, before the two settled in a rented land just west of town.
Months later, another fateful day came to them, as Remel's father heard of a peasant rebellion rising in Caledonia, and the nobles of the region were desperate to hire mercenaries to supply their ranks. Against his wife's wishes, he embarked on the journey under the promise that the pay would be enough to help them start a new life. He kissed her one last time and promised he would return in three weeks' time with a huge bag of gold. The next dawn he took a ship to Caledonia, but sadly never came back, and neither did the gold. The mission he was assigned to went awry, and in the chaos he lost his life to a poisoned arrow. Though the battle was later turned around and the rebellion suppressed, this did not bring back the man whom a woman and soon child depended on.
Months later, Remel was born in the slums of Farpost's East Wind district. His mother was still grieving for the loss of her love, and eventually had to move to the slums of town due to the fact she could not work for the proper rent. Her life was ruined by the ill circumstances that befell her, and she clung to the child she now loved dearly.
Despite the unfortunate station of his birth, Remel was able to lead a relatively normal early life. At least, normal by East Wind standards. Growing up in abject poverty in a village known for its unsavory types took a heavy toll on Remel's formative psychology. Every moment he lived was for himself, to ensure he had food in his belly and clothes on his back. He was supported by his mother's love, and the apprenticeship he held towards several criminals throughout his childhood. Remel had little time spent in the world before he was learning how to operate under the long arm of the law, and his childhood passed for him quite quickly. At the age of 10, Remel moved on from being an apprentice to being a member of a beggar gang. Here, his career ramped up for him. No longer would he be under the protection of a master. Now, he would have to set out on his own to earn his daily bread. Picking locks and pockets was his go-to when begging simply wouldn't work, and his gang eventually built enough bravado to commit somewhat more grand heists and operations. If he was ever caught, he would be sent to the dungeon to be beaten by a Bailiff for several days. On a couple of occasions, he would even be hauled into the mines some miles north of the town to perform back-breaking slave labor. Despite the dangers and risks, Remel was able to adapt to his criminal career rather easily, and was surprisingly successful in most of his endeavors. This allowed him to collect a small wealth that both he and his mother lived off of.
However, by the age of 14, things began to change. Puberty took a hold of he and his gang, and around the same time they became bored of simple thievery. Their blood began to boil as they took up arms and began raiding travelers to and from the town. First they did this by stalking and waiting until they were most comfy and striking, and then with the help of the right figures began to grow a proper warband with which to meet caravans and rivaling gangs. A few notable figures stuck out from the rest in battle, the most prominent of whom were Remel with his dangerous dexterity and fair war tact that saved the gang from total destruction, and the other was a huge warrior type known as Viktor the Axer who could mow down practically anyone who opposed him. Viktor with sheer strength and intimidation became leader of the warband, and his methods of raiding became crude and forward. Simply march in and cut down anyone who isn't willing to share. Despite his success, his life came to and end two years later when he challenged a paladin of St. Elimine and promptly got a broadsword of light thrust through his chest. Remel took on the reins as leader after Viktor's death, and decided that his life in Farpost is to come to a close. The only gracious deed he ever did was using a portion of his pilfered wealth to purchase a small home in a farmstead northwest of Farpost, so his poor mother could settle there and have a new life. And there she settled, soon being married to a farmer there and being able to finally have a proper family.
As for Remel, he would take an act of vengeance on behalf of himself and his mother for the years of suffering they had to endure. He spent another bit of money on new clothing, specifically tailored to match the color of night. And in the dead of night they came, upon the wealthy farmstead of Remel's grandparents. And the blackness of night began to light up with fire and smoke as the old couple were mercilessly cut down in a flaming house. All food and everything of value was swiftly taken as they scattered off into the night before the guard could arrive.
It has been seven years since Remel became leader and led his first raid. Though he is respected among his brothers-in-arms, the gang he leads has been splintering and declining due to lack of proper leadership. Remel faults himself to a level for not having the maturity to be a proper leader, but this setback hasn't stopped Remel from his spree of robbery and razing all throughout the Western Isles. His ominous black clothing and tendency to strike at later hours has earned him the title of "Nightblade", which he wears with pride. Remel and his gang's current hideout is an old abandoned fort shrouded by a patch of forestry.
Alternate Backstory: The gang broke up after the raid knowing they were going to become infamous from this attack, and Remel is now a vagabond thief wandering the region looking for pickings. This version of him is only 19 and less powerful or feared. This is a backup in case the mods decide the main backstory is too Gary Stuey. If they don't, ignore this.
Remel's ultimate ambition is to become a noble, or at least as rich and renowned as one. Whether he will make it to that point is yet to be seen.
NPC fight: Swift, brutal, tactful, and completely dishonorable. Remel is willing to do ANYTHING he can to triumph over his opponent with as little damage to him as possible. If he engages a fight, he will usually do so by singling out a target and rushing his blindside in attempts to land a killing blow before he can even be seen, ending the fight before it even starts. Even if this fails, he can still be quite competent in real combat by making up his lack in defense for agility. Dodging blows and landing them onto openings is typically how Remel fights. This has proven to be quite effective for him, as Remel has more strength in him than the average thief. However, the two big fighters that prove to be obstacles to him are mounted cavaliers who can outrun him, and armored warriors who can overpower him. Remel knows he is far from the best swordsman out there, and if a potential combat situation seems unwinnable, he will do what he can to evade it. If he finds himself losing a fight, he would much rather flee than risk death.
That said, his sword isn't the only way Remel deals death. He's just as likely to poison your meal or burn down your bed while you sleep than to actually engage combat with you. He's no stranger to forming "friendships" with his targets only to backstab them (both metaphorically and literally) when the time comes to strike, and he makes sure to strike hard. Remel is a criminal through and through.
