Alphonse could feel the heat of the sun beating down on him, the smell of the dirt filling his nose as he walked, his cold sweet running down his forehead like a summer stream off a mountain. He wiped his forehead with his hand and rubbed his lips, feeling as though they were rugged with dirt. He took a long drawn-out sigh and stopped. He rested himself on his staff."I need to find shelter soon, or I'll bake here out in the sun," he said to himself, startling a passerby. The man that had passed the priest soon turned back toward the priest."There's a village just up ahead," the man said pointing down the road to where Alphonse was heading,"its just a mile or so down the road." Alphonse sighed with some relief. But still, a mile? Or so? Alphonse thought to himself, obviously not happy with the sound of "mile." The priest managed to smile, somewhat."Thank you kind sir," Alphonse said while reaching into his pocket."Oh need kind priest," the man said, running off back in the direction he was headed before."Nothing..." Alphonse said riddling around in his pocket.
Alphonse could see the first of the houses ahead."Finally!" he yelled aloud, with a smile on his face. He walked faster than he was before, eager to get to shelter. He stopped at the first building he came to, dropping to his knees, and whispering under his breath how grateful he was for the shade. He rested there for a few minutes, nearly falling asleep, but continued on to find an inn. Feeling much better before, he walked through the small town, looking for some type of inn. At the first of the inn pushed trough the door, as if pushing through a locked door(even though it wasn't) and took in a deep breath."So much better than in that damned heat!" He said to himself. He went up to the innkeeper,"One room for the..." Alphonse shuffled around in his pocket, remembering that he had no money."Oh... I seem to be..." Alphonse stumbled on. The innkeeper looked down at his pocket and then up at his face."What kinda buisness does a priest like yourself out here?" the inn keeper asked, glaring at him. The priests face froze, his smile disappeared, and his head dropped,"that is none of your concern," Alphonse looked back up at the innkeeper, who was obviously frightened by the priest."First door on the left," the innkeeper stammered."You serve drinks here right?" Alphonse asked, now much less serious, but now more intimidating.
Alphonse gulped down his second beer,"Now this is what I needed." smiling to himself, soon wandering into thought, and slowly his smile disappeared.

Years. Is that how long it has been? Is that how long I have spent my time looking for nothing but safe areas and books of elder magic? Is that what finally concludes to where I am now? In this blistering heat? Shadow thought on that long and hard. He had been walking down a road that he wish he didn't take. The sign a while back said there was some resting place, but he never found one. At least, not yet. He was sweating, not profusely, but it was a bit obvious. He needed some kind of shade, a drink, a bit of sleep. He was mumbling this to himself as he noticed a person walking this way. The person looked like a normal civilian, but Shadow didn't pay attention. Not until the person spoke to him. "Huh. Now whats a person like you doing out here. Shouldn't you magic types by somewhere in the capital or something?" Shadow was silent, but he was listening. The person probably couldn't tell by the hood that covered his face. The civilian began again. "Silent type, eh? Well, I'd bet you will be whooping for joy when you get to town. It's a few miles, but you'll make it. I sure hope that priest did though..." At that, the civilian walked away, certainly creeped out by Shadow. But he didn't care; he had a new reason to walk down this dusty road. Shadow then began his walk, with a little more speed into it.

After who knows how many beers, Alphonse was completely inebriated. Though he wasn't slurring words, he was stumbling about and talking to himself. The innkeeper looked up at him,"So you gonna get some sleep or what?" he said with a slight tone of annoyance in his voice."What's it to you!?" yelled the priest, slamming down his beer on the table."Your just, your just being nosey*hic*now aren't ya now?" the priest stood up and stumbled towards a wall near the innkeeper and ran into it tumbling backwards, tripping over a chair, and falling onto the floor."You want a fight now do ya?" the priest said, trying to get up."I don't need to fight a*hic*weakling like you." Alphonse stumbled through the door and fell into the dirt. The priest sat there for a few seconds, a few minutes, time passed by quickly. Tears started to fall onto the dry dirt, but Alphonse remained quite. He soon got up and wiped his face with the sleeve of his robe."I should probably stay*hic*outside." The priest sat down against the wall of the inn and closed his eyes."I'll feel better in the morning..."
Alphonse fell asleep as soon as he had finished talking. He could see nothing but darkness, infinite darkness. He then could see a flame, far in the distance coming towards, fast. He could hear it whistling towards him he turned around and tried to run but there was no earth beneath him. He turned around and the flame suddenly consumed him. He screamed aloud as he was burned alive. The priest was gasping for air as soon as he woke up. Sweat was running down his head. He looked down at his palms, they too were covered with sweat. He leaned up against the inn wall and looked up into the stars."No sleep for me I guess," the priest said with a sigh.

It was dark by the time Shadow got to the town. As he entered the town, he saw houses with little candles lighting the window sills. Near the center of the town, there was an inn. It wasn't the greatest, but it would do for a night like this. There weren't many sounds. In fact, he didn't even hear the crickets chirping their sounds in the distance. Nothing of the sort. He decided to go to the inn. As he was walking towards the building, he noticed a white bundle of clothes. As he neared, he saw it was a man. He only wore white garb. Shadow was going to take another step, when he noticed the man was moving just a little. Looking around, he backed up to a house. He didn't want to startle the man. Shadow was backing up once more, when he stepped on a twig. The twig made a loud snapping kind of noise. It probably wasn't that loud, but it sounded of a volcanic eruption to Shadow. He stopped in his tracks, waiting for some kind of response from the man.

Alphonse was deep in thought, looking up at the twinkling stars in the great skies. Alphonse snapped out of his daze and lowered his head."I shouldn't go through Ilia..." the priest said aloud, continuing to mumble to himself. Suddenly there was a loud snap nearby. Alphonse quickly turned toward where the noise came from. He slowly stood up,"Hello? is any one there?" the priest said quietly. He started to walk towards where the noise came from, but stopped. It's probably nothing he thought to himself, I bet it's just some squirrel, or maybe I'm hearing things. He rubbed his forehead, turned around and started back towards the spot he was sitting in before.

Shadow was hesitant, but he decided to make a little appearance. He stepped out of the shadows, and into the moonlight. He was now visible in the night, and it felt awkward. He began to speak to the stranger. "You can say there is someone here." Shadow didn't say it loudly, or harsh. He just said it in a monotone voice that gave no indication of his current mood. He then waited for the man to respond, which probably wouldn't be to short of a time period. It's not everyday someone dressed like the Grim Reaper comes out of a shadow to you.

As Alphonse was walking back towards his spot against the wall, he heard something like that a whisper behind him. He turned around to see a dark cloaked man facing him. Alphonse froze, not knowing what to do. What should I do? Run? Call for help? The priest took his staff in both hands, as if preparing to be attacked."Who are you!?" The priest said in a quiet, afraid, angry voice. He was for the dark figure to attack him.

Shadow saw something he never saw before. And that would be a priest armed with a staff ready to fight. The reason he figured the man was a priest was the clothing. White, holy, clothing was the main factor. To the white cloak, back down to his shoes. It was apparent that he was a holy man. Another reason was the staff. Most priests and clerics have staffs with them. Because of this, he decided not to attack. Shadow wasn't even going to attack in the first place. The man's voice made Shadow respect him a bit. Even this man within peace and prayer knows when to stick up for himself. Casually, Shadow raised his hands to indicate he had no weapons, only the dark tome in his cloak pocket. He then began to say, gently, "Peace. I am not going to hurt you, good priest. I've only come to get a room in the inn." Shadow was about to walk by the man to get in, when he noticed the dirt on the man. His face looked like he was shoved in the dirt. In a more concerned voice, Shadow asked, "Are you alright? You seem to be hurt a bit."

Alphonse slowly lowered his staff, puzzeled by why he had held it in a battle like position, as if he would use it that way. The priest looked down at his clothing to see it spattered with dirt."Oh yes, I'm quite fine," Alphonse said with a tense voice. He looked the cloaked figure up and down. He could tell that he was a young man and possibly a dark magic user of sorts."Remove your hood, so that I may see your face," Alphonse said with suspicion in his voice.

The hood Shadow wore was hiding the furrowed eyebrows he was making once more. Dang, he thought to himself, this guy doesn't let anything go by. Oh well. He then nodded to the man. He lifted his hood, revealing his upper part f his face. Nothing much to see. He had strange white hair, and deep blue eyes. His skin was pale, especially in the moonlight. Shadow looked at the man, then said, in an easy tone, "I know I look suspicious, and for a good reason. You've probably figured this, but I am a student of elder magic. Here is my tome to prove it." Shadow reached into his cloak, and pulled out a dark book. It had strange, ancient designs on it. He opened the book, showing the pages to the man. There were also strange symbols on the pages. The book shut, and he placed it back into his cloak. Shadow looked up from the pocket, and asked, "Say, priest, I never got your name. May I ask who you are, and why would a man such as your status would be traveling here?"

Alphonse looked at cloaked man with sharp eyes as he took off his hood. The moonlight glared of his pale skin and shined off his white hair. He looked into his deep blue eyes, they were like wells of unbound knowlendge and wisdom. The priest felt as if he was looking at an old man in a teenagers body. Alphonse raised his chin at his first comment. He listened intently as he talked of elder magic, of which he had no problem with.
The priest watched as the man pulled a tome out of his pocket and shoved the book in front of him, flipping through the pages. Alphonse looked with curiosity and confusion at the pages scattered with odd symbols. The man closed the book before he could examine the symbols any further and watched as the shadey man slipped the book back into his pocket.
Alphonse looked back up at the mans face at his question."I am Alphonse Zsoldos," said Alphonse in a proud and slightly drunk voice,"I'm passing through, headed towards Ilia." Alphonse was now much more relaxed now knowing this man was no threat, or at least it seemed so." What of you? What might your name be, and what is an elder magic user like yourself doing out here."

Shadow repeated the name in his head, quickly. He then said. "Alphonse, hmm? Well, to tell you the truth, I really don't know why I'm out here. Usually, when I find a town, I try to find a library, or someone who knows of elder magic, which is very rare. So are the libraries, but I find at least one every three to five months. some of the information is false, or already known. But that's just me. Other than that, no particular reason to travel." Shadow suddenly grinned a little, and said, apologitically, "Sorry for not giving introductions. Most people who care to know who I am call me Shadow. At least, that's what I go by." Shadow looked like he was relaxing, then became serious again.
He was inspecting the man, becasue something seemed off. Was it his speech, or was it some alignment of his body that seemed... different? Alphonse appeared to be fine, and he seemed healthy. Yet, Shadow had keen senses, and he lightly breath through his nose. Then he understood; alcohol. It wasn't that he did not like people who drank it, but alcohol itself was his enemy. He saw many a good men that had been subdued by the addiction to drink, and it particularly scared him. Shadow never let that fear show, however.
Shadow asked to Alphonse, "Won't you come inside? If there is, or was any trouble at all, there won't be. I can assure you that."

Alphonse listened as the shady man explained himself. Some of his words came out in a mumble. He shook his head to try and get his hearing back, just in time to hear the man tell Alphonse his name. Though I feel comfortable around this man, Shadow, he still seems... The priest couldn't think straight, he could feel Shadow's eyes walking up and down across his body. He was confused by his thoughts, where he was, he couldn't understand the wold around him. He heard Shadow mumble something to him. The world went into a blurry spin.
The priest could taste the dust in the air, his saliva running down his cheek. He must of fallen sideways into the dirt, he could not move, he heard nothing. Suddenly everything around was dark. There was no smell, no taste, no feelings. What had he done to himself?

Shadow watched, surprised, as the man fell. He wanted to help, but the man was already falling, and had hit his head on the ground. The man laid there, still, but breathing. Shadow looked on, not sure what to do. He muttered to himself, "Oh dear..." Shadow kneeled down towards Alphonse. He obviously needed help and he was sure that the priest was in some sort of trouble. His physical strength was not great, but Shadow tried to pull Alphonse up by the arms. It was already apparent that this was going to be tricky. Somehow, with dumb luck, Shadow had gotten one of Alphonse's arms around his shoulders, leaned Alphonse against himself, and walked him into the inn. As Shadow did this, he found a nice, isolated place from the very few people in the room. They all watched, intently. Usually, he did not care if people stared at him, but this man needed some help. Yet, no one even moved a muscle.
He finally got Alphonse in a chair, his head propped up by the side of a wall, near the corner. Shadow then looked around, saw the bartender, then asked, "Is there any water?" The bartender slowly nodded his head, and went back to get some. Shadow then turned his focus again on Alphonse, and said, "Come on, wake up. I have no idea what's wrong, but if you don't get up, what else am I supposed to do?"

Alphonse was in complete darkness, he could hear echoes around him, he could feel himself moving. He tried to make out what was happening, but it all came in as a fuzz. He could feel his stomach burning, his head boiling. He felt himself sit down and then he heard yelling. Everything was getting brighter, but he still could make out what he was seeing. He could see a dark blob standing over him. He tried to say something, but he couldn't move his mouth.
He tried to lift up his arm, his leg, he couldn't. He looked up at the dark blob. That must be Shadow, who else could it be? He lifted up his arm, struggling with it and grabbed Shadow's rode. He looked at what he thought was his face. He tried to make out the word "sleep" to him, but didn't know if he had succeeded. He then leaned back, let go of Shadow's robe and fell back into the chair.
He was not fully asleep, he was still aware of everything around him. Sleep...
