"I understand why you'd want to eat later." He said this only to make him feel better. Sure, he did understand, but Shadow lost that feeling in his gut a long time ago.
"Alright, let's get out of here," Shadow said, almost eagerly. He didn't need anyone seeing him at a scene like this. Now, only Alphonse could he trust. Shadow got up, and waited for Alphonse to lead the way.

Alphonse stared at Shadow for a second, lost in thought, then shook his head."We should get going," He said to Shadow still a bit tired. I wonder how we'll fair at the river thats coming up... Alphonse wondered. He had looked at many maps before embarking on his journey, and he knew that they should be coming up to a river soon. It shouldn't be too far. The priest then turned west, and started on his way.

It wasn't too long when the two started walking that Shadow noticed something. During his time of traveling, most people would give Shadow cold looks, or even run away. Yet, something different happened when he met Alphonse. There were no worried glances in his direction, no running in terror. Instead, Alphonse somehow looked past his scary demeanor, and accepted him. For what reason, Shadow still wondered. All he could tell was that traveling with Alphonse would be interesting.

Later that morning; 10:45, at the bank of a stoney river.
Alphonse looked over at the rushing that was only a few meters ahead of him. He took in a deep breath of the river air, and let the sound of the trickling summer water sooth him. Alphonse opened his eyes and looked down at the smooth stones below his feet, then back up at the bank that Alphonse had climbed down. Shadow was still on top of it, looking into the distance. Alphonse looked past Shadow; there were only but a few small trees behind him; the large forest had disappeared form sight.
Alphonse looked back up at Shadow. "Come on down," he said to Shadow with a slight smile. He wasn't in a hurry, but he sure did want some water...

Shadow looked down at Alphonse. Being higher from the ground reminded him of a sad time. It was on the wyvern; the wyvern of a dead companion. The two never were close, but they had an understanding. Shadow sighed. He would remember him falling...
A weariness overtook Shadow, as he rubbed his eyes. He focused on the priest once more, and said, "I'll be right behind you, no worries. I'll watch your back." His voice was weary, but sincere.

Alphonse gave a slight shrug and headed for the river. That Shadow is quite a strange character; always wanting to be alone and silent. Alphonse stopped near the edge of the river, trying to look for some good stones to stand on near the water. He hopped around onto the stones, one after another, until he found a good drinking spot. He looked down into the clear, crystalline water, I wonder if something happened to Shadow to make him this way, or maybe he was just born the way he is... Alphonse kneeled down and scooped up some water with his hands. "Finally," he said with a sigh, then gulping down the water in his hands.

After a short while, Shadow jumped down. He landed lightly, making sure not to make too much noise. In silence, even a breath is a piercing sound. To Shadow, this is the same in every situation. With or without company to lead.
Within a very brief period of walking, he was behind Alphonse. A light feeling in the inside of his cloak told Shadow that was low on water. He kneeled down near the rivers edge, holding his wineskin (for water), and lightly letting the water flow into it. He brought it up once he felt there was enough water. He did the same with the second. Shadow was always prepared. During this process, he wondered if Alphonse had noticed him.

Alphonse splashed some water on his face and lowered his head, taking in a large breath. Alphonse looked up and across the river. This should be interesting, trying to cross this river. Alphonse looked down into the water; he could see that it got quite deep, too deep to wade through. The priest took a glimpse around and was startled to see Shadow, for he hadn't heard him coming. He gave a slight jump and almost fell into the water, barely keeping balance. Alphonse walked back away from the river, and when he finally stopped he gave a large sigh.

The river wasn't the biggest, nor the current the strongest. Still, it could be dangerous. Shadow then said to Alphonse, "We have to cross this, right? I know there aren't any bridges, just to make sure you know that." Shadow wondered why he even said that. It made him sound like some sort of person who points out the obvious. He criticized himself in his head for that one.

Alphonse gave a nod, with a confused look on his face. Not what I was expecting for the shaman to say, but we do need to cross this river. Alphonse looked over to the river, then back to Shadow, trying to think of a plan. Alphonse then started walking upriver, and as he passed Shadow , he turned to him and said,"I hope you know how to swim..."

As Shadow was examining the river, an idea popped into his mind. He asked Alphonse, hopefully, "You wouldn't have any rope, now would you?" There was a spark of excitement in his eyes, but that could also have been anticipation. Either way, Shadow's mind was set on crossing that river.

Alphonse starred at Shadow blankly, almost as if he was face-palming without actually doing it. "Shadow, does it look like I just carry around rope with me wherever I go?" Alphonse said to Shadow in a slightly irritated voice. "Now come on, lets go." Alphonse turned back around, heading upriver again. Rope! Where would he get the idea that I have rope!?

Shadow brought his hand to his chin, then let his gaze wander to the river. He then replied, "Hmm... I guess you're right. Well, I guess my first plan was no good." He then remembered Alphonse saying something about swimming. Shadow wasn't truly listening, as he was thinking of ways to cross. But, like Alphonse mentioned, swimming was their best bet.
Shadow looked up to Alphonse again. He said, quietly, "Swimming is the only option I see right now. Tell me, do you know how to swim?" This time, he'd better say yes. Because if he couldn't, Shadow would really question why he was out here.

Alphonse gave a chuckle at Shadows question and turned to the river. "So, who's going first?" He said, looking up at Shadow. He didn't really care who went when, he trusted Shadow. He looked back down at the stream, deep in thought.

Shadow didn't look over at Alphonse when he said, in a rather serious voice, "I am." He began to take off his cloak. He then checked the inside pockets, making sure everything was in place, firmly secured. He then wrapped the cloak into a dark ball of cloth, again, making sure nothing would fall out. When everything was as it should be, he tested the weight by giving it a little toss in the air. Then, Shadow took his aim, and threw the bundle of belongings over to the other side of the river. It landed just feet from the water's edge.
Shadow sighed in relief. He was hoping that he didn't land his belongings in the river. However, it was a success. Shadow looked back to Alphonse, asking, "Anything you need over their before you get wet?" He had a slight smile, and his serious voice was no more.
