OOC: I'm just using this as a place to post a series of stories dealing with this guy. It is closed.
IC:
The long days passed as seconds in the time span of his life. Countless days had come before, and countless days would come after. They would join in the centuries of life he yet had remaining with him. Over time, he would begin to grow lonesome, but that problem was easily rectified by the meddling of a certain human.
For the one named Athos knew, and he understood. As he explained to the Guardian of the desert who asked him once, “He has nothing, no friends, no family, not even any enemies anymore. Were he to die today, nobody on the earth would even notice his passing. Truly, that is the definition of alone. Alone for centuries, all he had to hold onto was the hatred, the revenge, it was all that was left. But I seek to fix that.”
“He will not come to you, and he will not listen to you. You are his enemy after all.” The larger man questioned. “That is true, indeed, but that does not mean that he is unreachable.” A smile curved his lips. “I believe an answer will make itself known soon enough, do not worry yourself.”
A long, dry wind cut through the large cave. The dragon slept in a corner, relaxed in a pillar of the hot desert sun. Being in Dragon form was comfortable, but it was exhausting so he spent much time sleeping. It was only the sound of a voice echoing in the caves tunnels that roused him from his sleep. A young voice, a girls. What was a young girl doing in this cave?
“Helllloooooooooo!” The shout echoed about the walls. “Is there anybody hoooooooooome?” She called, her footsteps growing closer. Without waiting anymore, Aerious reverted to his human form and moved further into the cave to avoid the prying eyes of foolish humans. In stepped, as he expected, a young girl. Didn’t appear older then a decade by human standards. Long straight blond hair, emerald eyes, and one very important item of note, a pair of dragon wings protruding from her back. A dragon, though not skilled enough to hide them apparently. Aerious found no need to hide anymore and stepped out from behind the rock.
“Why have you come here, little one?” He addressed her simply, and without any sugar-coating or honeyed words. She looked up at him with a glare, stopping her foot in a childish act of frustration.
“I’m not little, I’m two ‘undred and sixty-three years old!” She declared indignantly. Aerious turned his back to the child, waving his hand at her dismissively. “Psh, barely older then a hatchling. Didn’t your parents warn you about going beyond the towns protections?” Even he knew about the artificial sandstorm the Archsage used to hide Arcadia. He’d never been there, but he knew of it of course.
“Uh-huh. But Grampa said there was someone out here I need ta bring something to.” She began rummaging in her pockets, clearly frustrated by her inability to find it. Finally her face lit up as she found it, and pulled it out, beaming at Aerious. Aerious looked at the small seal of metal in her hand, and picked it up for a moment. As he glanced over it, he recalled it. This was a seal, to bypass the sandstorm around Arcadia. Which meant it could only come from one person…His fist clenched, and the dragon stone, which was on a chain around his neck, glowed dimly. His fist shattered the disc of metal, and the girl shrieked as she jumped back in surprise. Almost immediately her eyes began to tear up as she looked up at the taller man.
“W-Why *sniff* would you do that?*sniff*” She said through her sniffles, ending the sentence with a hiccup. “Grampa made that for you, and you broke it!”
“I have no need of that old mans generosity.” Aerious said, opening his hand so the scraps of metal could fall to the ground. “Now go, and tell him not to bother me again.” He commanded, turning his back on the girl to retreat further into the cave, but fate would surprise him again today.
“No.”
He whipped around, starring at the little girl, standing there defiantly with her arms crossed over her chest. “What did you say little one?” He asked, not able to remove the threat from his voice. The girl, however, did not move or falter, she just glared back at him.
“I’m not going until you tell me why you broke Grampa’s present!” She said, full of anger. This girl…a fraction of his age, was standing up to him. In a way he could never have imagined it, but it was happening now. And she was stubborn, sitting down on the ground, cross-legged, staring at him.
“Fine, suit yourself.” Aerious remarked, transforming back to full height, and curling up to resume his sleep. It was, however, interrupted by a annoyance akin to a fly buzzing around the room. The little girl had jumped onto his massive body and now spent her time simply keeping him from ignoring her.
This was going to be a long day, even for him.
After an hour or so of unsuccessful sleep, Aerious had reverted back to his human form, and gathered a small stash of dried meat he kept around in case he did not feel like hunting. Today was such a day, and he ripped of a piece of the meat, chewing it quietly, when he heard some noise fill the cave. He looked up curiously at the girl, who looked down almost ashamed as her stomach growled yet again. With a half smile, Aerious ripped off a piece of the meat and tossed it to the girl, who caught it with a surprised ‘Eep!’.
“Eat, I have no desire to watch a child starve. After that you are going home.” The girl tore into the meat greedily before she looked up at Aerious. “I’m not going yet!” She said defiantly. Aerious just glared at her. “You presume I gave you a choice.”
He knew she wouldn’t go easily, but it wasn’t hard to overpower her, even as she struggled against his massive claw as the wind pushed past them. Her shouts of protest were silenced by the roaring winds, and Aerious saw the sandstorm that was his marker. Flying low, he released the girl, who rolled once or twice on the dunes, before he picked up altitude again and flew back to the south, towards his cave. The girl stood up and shouted after him, but her voice was lost on the winds.
She would then return to the Archsage’s chamber, but and he’d greet her without turning around.
“Ah, welcome back Elisa. How did the visit go?” She hung her head low in response.
“Oh, I’m so sorry! He broke it, after you spent so much time making it! He was so mean and angry, like a goat or some nasty cat!” Athos laughed at the child, and placed his hand on her young head. “Oh it is all right my child, I had a feeling he would. You did exactly what I wanted you to.”
“Grrr, why was he so mean? He shouted at me, and threw me into the sand, and and…oooooh!” The little girl vented, Athos smiled and shook his head. “My child, sometimes we can’t understand what other people feel. But did you really think he was a bad person?”
Elisa thought for a minute. “Well…no not really, but he’s really stubborn…and rude too!”
Athos nodded. “Thus the wisdom of youth is revealed. Thank you for your help Elisa, it has been very enlightening.”
The girl then left, feeling thoroughly disappointed with herself. Athos merely smiled.
“And thus the first step is completed, now we leave the rest to her.”
