It was a rather uneventful day of traveling, and the sun grew low in the sky. As talk was made of preparing camp for the night, they would spot a small plume of smoke coming from further on the road. Perhaps someone else had thought the same thing.
Wyatt, however, was totally oblivious to this. Happily plodding along.

Although the group had been somewhat enthralled in their ongoing conversations to keep from being awkwardly silent or bored out of their minds, Selk had also tried to be aware of his surroundings. On the battlefield it was a requirement of staying alive to know where your opponent is at all times. Despite the fact that they hadn't encountered anyone else on the path yet didn't mean they wouldn't encounter someone. And a glance into the distance at this point told Selk that the meeting he'd tried to stay alert to was drawing near. He could see the smoke billowing up from somewhere down the path in front of them.
"So, do we want to meet up with whoever that smoke pillar belongs to? Or are we going to try to go around them?" He pointed up ahead towards the gray clouds sprouting from the horizon as he said this.

"I guess..." Malachi started as he answered Selk's question. "I guess we'll have to meet with'em." Malachi clenched his lance in his hand, he could feel his blood rush, a drop of cold sweat ran down his forehead and onto his cheek. He had not felt this way for years, it had been so long since he had been in a battle, and because of the battle back in the mountains in Laus, he was ready for another. I haven't felt this way in so long. Malachi looked down at his lance, he knew who they would meet could be some travelers, or they could be a group of bandits after a nice days pillage. He was going to find out.

At the possibility of a battle ahead Lilith offered to stay behind to guard the carriage. Makes sense, Denzel thought. There's no reason to take our valuables with us if there's trouble ahead. Beyond that thought still , Denzel was also relieved. Despite his own reassurance that Lilith was a magiscaster of great talnent in her own right, he could not help but worry about her. With those worries out of the way, Denzel nodded at Selk and Malachi. 'Let's go check it out.'

Aaron looked up and hopped out of the cart he'd been riding in. He had seen the pillar of smoke that the others were talking about. If it turned out to be your average travelers, they would likely be worried when they saw a whole troupe of armed fighters coming towards them.
"It could cause trouble if we all go barging in there at once. Should some of us go ahead of the others to see what the situation is?"

Wein pointed a hand out towards Denzel, Selk, and Malachi. "I dunno, but it seems like we've got ourselves a scouting crew already," he said. He tapped his legs. "If my legs were more up to it, I'd go scout it out, but I'd probably just slow things down." He turned to Winsett. "You could hang back here with me if you want."

As the three approached, they would start to see a small fire come into view. The light coming off of it would reveal the shadows of three people. Thanks to the fire, Denzel, Selk and Malachi could see them well, while not being easily seen themselves.
However, since two of the scouts were in heavy armor, and the third in foot soldier armor, they were heard.
One of the three at the campfire leaned down and picked up a bow, pointing it in their direction, though it was obvious he could not see them.
"Who's there?!" He called. "Don't bother to hide, I can hear you."

Denzel cursed under his breath but came out first with his hands halfway up. "No cause for alarm, we're just a couple of travellers passing by." Denzel held a pleasant smile on his face as he came into. He didn't feel like abandoning cover before the man that noticed them put his bow away.

Selk kept silent until Denzel stepped up and spoke to the three at the fire. Selk then followed suit, moving into their view with his right hand up and his left hand hanging loose at his side. "Whoa, now. No need to go pointing arrows. We're just passing through here," Selk said calmly. What he and Denzel had said was the truth, to a degree. They were travelers and they were heading through this area. That wasn't the whole story, although these three at the fire didn't need to know that.

Malachi looked up at Denzel and Selk, sheathed his lance, and stood up giving a sigh. "It's true, we saw the smoke and thought maybe we could..." he stopped himself there, not really knowing what to go on about. Malachi couldn't tell them they were suspicious and decided to check out where the fire was coming from. He just smiled nervously, trying to seem friendly. This is a bit of a situation we've gotten ourselves into. Malachi looked back over at his friends, hoping they could help him out.

There was a tense moment when the people around the campfire obviously went for their weapons. Though they were not brandishing them, they were clearly holding them. The other two looked to be a swordsman and an axeman.
"All right, you want to approach, do it slow. We won't attack." The archer called back, lowing his bow slightly so it was no longer pointed in their direction. He did, however, keep the arrow strummed.
Meanwhile Wyatt and the others could hear this all, he whispered to Aaron. "They don't sound like bandits..."

Aaron had stayed behind, sticking with the wagon and company. He'd listened to the exchange up ahead, and didn't think the others were in immediate danger. The Archer had said they could approach after all. If they were hostile, he would have wanted to keep them farther away.
Aaron heard Wyatt whisper to him, and spoke softly back. "No, they don't, but I'm not going to let my guard down just yet." He knew that there must be plenty of civilians who traveled the lands. Not everyone could be bandits.
"It doesn't sound like they're particularly trusting." he said to the group back at the wagon as a whole, smiling wryly.

Wein's brow furrowed at the conversation. Cautiously, he knocked an arrow and held his bow up, ready to loose the bolt if necessary. "Then I don't see why we should be too trusting either," he said, staring ahead, slowly easing his horse forward. "I refuse to be anything but careful."

Yaen stood at the back of the group, his iron sword already drawn. "I really don't think we should be here..." he commented, looking around warily. "What if there is more of them, and they aren't as inclined to chat?" he asked. The Sacaen was nervous, and it was as plain as day. He didn't want anything to do with Etruria, and given the current circumstances, who could blame him? "The things I do for money." he muttered bitterly under his breath.

Denzel began his slow approach. I suppose being overtly cooperative would be the best course of action now. 'So, who are you guys anyways?' Denzel asked. Being that there were only three of them, he doubted they were soldiers, even irregulars, Denzel supposed they might be messengers or some bandits that were overly careful.
