Wein nodded. "The name's Wein. I'm a traveler from Ostia," he said in reply. "Now come on, we've got to hurry. Even if they're not hurt now, it's not smart to leave somebody in a fire."

Peace and quiet, Bridget thought. Lycia was beautiful, much nicer than home, and this forest was no exception. Seated on a bed roll, Bridget carefully examined the map laid out before her and sighed. Her finger traced over the familiar four letters that she had been staring at for four days. With painstaking precision, she crossed the four letters off with ink. After so much traveling, her first choice for her father's location had failed. Laus- that's what people said the place was called- was not his home. Oh well. Bridget wasn't too concerned; it had only been her first stop. She placed her map back in its sack and stretched out on her bed. She had already memorized the next location. A man from a nearby village had shown her what the five letters spelled out: O-S-T-I-A. The name meant nothing to her, of course, but it was supposed to be her next stop. Enough contemplation, she thought to herself. Time to sleeeee...
Bridget's nostrils flared as a familiar smell invaded her senses. Smoke. She'd seen enough fires in her life to know when one was nearby. Bridget quickly rolled her bed up into a neat little square and shoved it into her sack. Keep your wits about you, woman, she thought. Losing your mind in a fire will be the death of you. As she hastily pulled her shoes on, Bridget calmly recited the same word over in her head: Ostia. Ostia. Ostia.
As luck would have it, Bridget did remember the way back to the village. The same man who taught her O-S-T-I-A had told her- all she had to do was reverse the directions! Sarah wrapped a spare piece of red cloth around the bottom half of her face and set off at a jogging pace.
Bridget had a sick feeling in her stomach as her search dragged on. She began to fear that the smoke had caused her to run about in circles. I can't die here... She took the time to plant her feet and scan the area. Burning woods, smoke, fire, falling branches...holy- Bridget ran over to the strange sight and knelt down. It was some kind of feral...wolf...thing. The villagers had told her about this, but she hadn't believed them. "Okay. Now I really have get out of this forest." she muttered.
Reoriented, Bridget had little trouble clearing her mind to recall her path out. The shock of the wolf had also helped, and before long, she saw clear water. She threw the cloth from her mouth and splashed a handful of water over her face. "Sweet..." Bridget savored her momentary safety, which was interrupted when she noticed people. From their figures(she couldn't see much besides), they didn't look like bandits. Bridget stood up and ran over to the closest one- the smoke still clouding her eyes, she made out green hair but little else. "Do you know the way out of this forest?" she demanded, her voice scratchy. No time for pleasantries...

Yaen looked around at the burning scene. "You go on ahead, Wein!" He called. "I be with you in a minute...I hope." He said, the last part muttered under his breath. He'd looked death in the face twice in his life already, and that was one supernatural force he'd rather not meet again anytime soon. But he couldn't just leave. Not while everyone was hurt and retreating. He'd stay, just long enough to make sure it'd be allright.
He could feel the fire. The burning sensation was all around him, and the smoke was clouding his vision and making it hard to breath. But he saw no wolves. They were either dead or retreating. Confident that the wolves would not follow them, the Sacaen turned to leave, only to bump into the last thing he was expecting. A girl? "What are you doing? This is no place for a gi-ii-iiii" Yaen stopped in mid sentence as he blinked away the tears in his eyes and got a better look. That was not a girl. No way on earth was that a girl. Not with a figure like that. If he weren't already red from the heat, Yaen would have blushed. "...Ah, never mind! Come on!" he demanded, taking the gi-woman by the arm. Looking around, he cursed. Everything looked different when it was on fire! "...This way!" he stated, taking the safest looking exit.

Aaron looked up when he heard an unfamiliar voice.
"Do you know the way out of this forest?"
It was too smokey to see clearly, but he could tell from the voice that it was a young woman. He saw a form moving through the smoke, towards him. The voice didn't sound hostile, but he still wasn't sure what to do. He fingered his fire tome where he'd stashed it but quickly had a thought as he looked around. "No way. There's enough fire here right now." Still, a burning forest was the last place he'd expected to meet someone.
He was about to reply when Yaen, showed up out of the smoke as well. The nomadic swordsman spoke to her seeming to be taken aback by something mid sentence. As Aaron caught a better view through the smoke, he saw why. This woman could only be called well endowed. He chuckled to himself at Yaen's reaction, but, truth is, he was surprised, himself.
He replied towards the two from the vestiges of his focus on magic. "Glad to see you're still alive Yaen, that was rough business back there." The emotion seemed to have been sucked out of his voice from the casting earlier, but it was beginning to return now that he wasn't in his self-imposed cocoon of concentration. "Do you think you can get us out of here?"
The sense was fading, but he seemed able to feel a tingling all around him. It was the fire, he realized. He was able to feel the natural fires around them. The only problem was that, even though he could feel it, he was nowhere near strong enough to actually be able to detect enough to point them in the right direction. If they couldn't stay ahead of the flames, they would be burnt like the rest of the forest.

As Wein jogged around the forest perimeter, he noticed 3 figures running through the smokey woods. He moved into the woods to get a closer look, but the smoke stung his eyes. Squinting and peering into the blackness, he realized it was Yaen, Aaron, and...some woman he had never seen before. Clambering over fallen trees and burning roots, Wein stumbled towards the group, raising a hand above his head and waving at the three. "Over here!" he shouted. "Follow me, I know the way out!"

Selk hopped down into the water right behind Aaron and began moving with him. The cool water was soothing to the burns on his leg. It didn't make it any easier to breathe, though. Selk coughed in between struggled breaths as he waded the waters, following his comrade. When Aaron stopped and took note of the new arrival....wait....a new arrival? Meeting someone in the middle of a raging forest fire?! What was the world coming to? Things seemed more grim now than they ever had before. Selk wasn't sure if he'd make it through the remainder of the day....

Bridget's face twisted in anger. First she was almost burned alive, and now a bunch of people who apparently knew the two guys she'd just met had shown up. She tried to sigh, but was honestly too tired to. At least one of them claimed to know the way out, but still. And what was that guy saying? No place for a 'girl'? That's what it sounded like! Bah. When I get out this, he is so gonna be the first one I rob, Bridget thought.
For once, though, Bridget's mind wasn't totally focused on stealing. Whether she liked it or not, these guys were her only hope for getting out of this damned hellhole. So, she followed the man who had announced himself. If he knew a way out, she might just give him a kiss! Hah! Bridget ran after him, not minding her modesty- after all, it wasn't likely that anyone could see anything with the smoke. "Listen, guy, if you lead me to a crispy death, I'm gonna slit your throat! Got it?!" she called out.

Wein made a worried face as they ran out of the forest, thought it probably couldn't be seen through the smoke. This woman sure was...charming...and by charming, he meant not charming at all. "Now what would I have to gain by getting us both roasted in a fire?! I enjoy living believe it or not!" he shouted at her. He looked over his shoulder to spot see if Yaen, Aaron, and now Selk were following. He motioned for them to follow. "Get a move on, guys, unless you want to be cooked!" Wein turned, jumping a large root, and looked ahead. He could almost see the light.

Aaron saw that Wein was heading through the forest, and took off after him. The fires seemed to be beginning to get smaller as they moved through the trees. That woman that had shown up was coming along, and was sharing less than friendly dialog with Wein.
"I'm coming!" He was wondering what had happened to all the others. The fire had become chaotic though, so the others may have gotten separated. He hoped they would get out.

Kishou followed Wein to the river, albeit a bit slower than the archer. When he arrived, he noticed his accomplices inside the flame and smog. Wein rushed in without a second thought, but the monk hesitated, finding the flames becoming exceedingly dangerous to venture forth. He stayed behind, focusing light as he exploded the flames at the pathway.
He focused another light spell, but held it on his fingertips as a small make-shift torch. He spotted Wein and the others closing in, and called out to them, encouraging them.
"Hurry! This way!"

the green haired mage hurried through the woods. He saw several flashes of light as burning brush fell away. He felt a distinctly uplifting feeling at the flashes, like a booster shot to his confidence, and there was something in the air suggesting strength.
He looked up and saw a man with a globe of light over his hand urging them out. It was a practitioner of light magic, Aaron realized.
He hurried out of the forrest, giving an exhausted nod of thanks to the man as he passed. A coughing fit racked him but he knew he'd be fine after he was out of all the smoke. After he had moved a safe distance away, Aaron collapsed on the grassy hillside, watching and waiting for the other survivors to come out. He wasn't even sure who had gone where anymore.

Jumping one last branch, Wein's vision was flushed with daylight. He failed to clear the final log, causing him to trip, and sending him face first into the ash covered grass. Realizing he could now breathe fresh air, his lungs began coughing out the smoke in favor of the clean air. It was harsh at first, but after a few breaths, it began to soothe Wein's lungs. Talking in a smoke filled forest: not good. Wein made sure to make a mental note, adding it to his "not to-do" list.
Breathing freely now, the archer pulled himself to his feet, and saw Aaron lying on a hill. He trudged over and sat himself down next to his green haired friend. "Did you know most forest fires are a natural occurrence that replenish the soil around, causing the next batch of trees to be better fertilized?" Wein looked back at the forest. Smoke still billowed out of the gaps in between trees. He had seen Kishou, but he wasn't sure if anyone else made it out. He wouldn't mind if the she-devil stayed inside. "This was not a natural occurrence, though. Be a bit more careful next time, alright?"

Aaron looked over at his archer friend in bewilderment when he started explaining about forest fires being good for the soil. He'd heard such things before but never really thought too much about it. After Wein finished speaking, Aaron let out a slight laugh, born of guilt and anguish at the destruction caused around him. Would the others make it out? Several had been close by...
He put a hand to his weary head as he commented. "Agreed to the caution bit. Nothing about tonight seems particularly natural."
The greatest harm can result from the best intentions, he thought to himself. He'd been fighting those monsters, and had been unprepared to avert the ensuing disaster. Something about his mind's statement just seemed to fit.
He hunched forward and coughed a few more times before taking a long cleansing breath. His mind turned back to the vicious creatures they had all fought earlier. He was worried that these creatures may be running freely across the countryside. Worried mostly for his home in Ryerde.
"Wein, have you ever seen creatures like those...things earlier?"

Wein sighed. Those things sure were scary. "No, no I have not," he responded. "I have seen many things, but I've never seen anything like those wolf...monster...things that we just fought." The archer put his hands behind his head and leaned back, looking up at he clouds in the sky. The smoke from the forest fire left one giant black cloud that stood out from all the white ones. "I did see a dragon once. Wait, scratch that, I saw two dragons," said Wein. He held up two fingers to emphasize the two. "Two dragons and an evil mage. And the dragons were fighting. Destroyed an entire port, boom, just like that." He made an explosion motion with his hands, then let them drop to his side. "Before that, I never even thought dragons existed. I wonder if these things have anything to do with dragons..." Wein trailed off. He hoped everyone was all right.

Bridget struggled to keep up with the men running in front of her, encumbered by her loot and unfamiliar with futzing around in fiery forests. Her eyes watered as she struggled to focus on the signs leading the way out. She could still make out the guys' figures, and a few sporadic flashes of light helped. For once, Bridget would have to...sigh...put her life in the hands of some chuck headed men. A tree branch fell a few inches to her left, scaring Bridget out of her mind. Throwing reservation to the wind, she put all of her energy into sprinting in the direction of the flashing lights.
Sunlight. Fresh air. Green grass. Bridget collapsed onto her knees, inhaled deeply, and then began to cough and hack like a madwoman. After a solid minute, she felt better, if hoarse. She glanced around and noticed that she was once again in the company of the same two guys she'd been with before. Bridget knew from the sounds she'd heard in the forest that there were others, but these two were the ones who she'd followed. "Thanks." she said, trying to muster up a smile. "Lissen, if there's any way for me to repay you, y'know, for savin' ma life in there, just say so." Bridget stood up, knees wobbling. "I'm Bridget. And who the hell are y'all?"
