Garnet closed his eyes at first, as he felt the line sag heavily under his weight, but realized he'd rather know first if he was going to sling down into a wall. He opened his eyes. He was most of the way down, only another fifteen or so feet to go. That was when he felt the rope drop out from beneath him.
He fell the rest of the way, throwing his hands infront of him, instinctively and rolling. The impact made is knees feel like they'd just been smashed by a boulder, but it was a lot better than what could have happened. He glanced back up towards the tower, watching the rope fall away, as he heard shouting coming down. "KILL THEM! SEAL THE GATES!" That guy cut my zipline down! Garnet thought indignantly, as he imagined smashing the shouter's own knees to bits.
Despite the pain, he pushed himself to his feet and half threw, half fell his way over to where his "partners" were climbing atop their horses. Garnet himself managed to crawl his way, quickly, into the saddle, before the threesome took off towards the gates.
Unfortunately, the gates were already closed, even while the three were a good way off. Garnet almost stopped, until he saw the large, man from earlier raise his hand. Energy crackled and a bolt of blue lightning blasted towards a small pile of the barrels he'd seen down in the cellar. What followed could only be considered magic.
On contact with the lightning bolt, the barrels exploded, a massive conflagration of fire and force blowing the gates clean off their hinges. The horses shied, but the fearsome crowds closing in didn't present much room for them to turn away.
Amazingly, they'd escaped. They rode for hours, cutting back on the speed in favor of traveling a longer distance. "What's wrong with you!?" The woman rounded on the red headed merc. "Your Melodramatics could've gotten me killed up there! They said you were a professional"
Garnet attempted to assume a nonchalant air, acting like everything was normal, and that he belonged. "I thought everything worked out nicely." The woman grumbled something under her breath at this, but couldn't catch it. Something Garnet was reasonably sure he didn't want to catch.
They rode on in silence for a bit more before Garnet realized that he was now in the middle with the woman leading, and the magic man behind. The Red-head was suddenly a bit more apprehensive. "Well Fal, it's about time we parted company." Garnet turned and saw the large man handling a bag of coins. "300 gold pieces, just like we agreed through your agent."
"Just toss it here, and I'll be on my way then." Crack! That must have been the wrong answer. Garnet felt a hard knock to the back of his head, and fell off the side of his horse. When he could finally see something other than stars, he saw the woman bending over him. She stood up with his weapon buckler, and gold. "First off, your name is not supposed to be Fal. My comrade has a healthy sense of suspicion, and he decided to test you. Secondly, 300 gold pieces is piecemeal for a target of Carlyle's stature. You did help us though, so I suppose we'll leave you with your life. Corval, stun him."
"Yes, Lady Karen." Garnet heard the sizzle felt himself going numb, as the mage, Corval hit him with a low powered thunder spell. His eyes widened at the shock, but he gritted his teeth and resisted it. He was still struggling against it while they rode away from him. With the horses, as it turns out.
