"Of course I can ride. I'm the Crimson Mage." He pointed his thumb to his chest triumphantly, a large grin stretching across his face. He was a bit bummed there was no red horses to choose from, so instead he chose a chestnut looking one. In the right light, brown looked almost red, so it's almost good enough. Bit of a bummer really, but there was nothing to be done. He'd go out and wrangle his own, but alas they didn't have the time.
Sitting atop the horse, he had an uneasy feeling. It's been years since he's been on horseback. Back when his father taught him as a kid... Hopefully he still remembered well enough to ride with the rest of them... What was he thinking! Of course he could keep up! In fact, it will be they who will have trouble keeping up, right!... R-right?

Nathaniel grabbed the horses' saddle in front. He pulled himself up into the saddle. Could he ride? Yes he had been an officer, all officers got a horse. He rested himself on the big horses neck. He hadn't gotten any rest between the battle and now. He sat up looking at Mana, "Milady, if you could wake me up when we shove off..." And he was asleep.

"Well good." Garnet replied to Elias, oblivious to any doubts the Crimson Mage may have had. "I'd say we have several hours of good sunlight left. We probably all have sore bums by the end, if we don't stop." Garnet said as he pulled himself into the saddle.
His greatsword was strapped to one side of the horse, while the rest of his gear and provisions was tied down to the other side. In this way, he hoped to balance out the weight, and limit the difficulty such a load would cause.
"Just leave him, Mana. If he needs the rest, he should sleep in the saddle. If he doesn't need the rest, he'll wake up on his own." Garnet laughed as his horse sidepassed a few steps before heading forward and over to Cecil.
"Cecil, I think we're ready. About the fastest I've ever seen an expedition put together too."
"South we go then. To fame, and knowledge."
So they headed out, Cecil leading the way, and leading the pack horse, and the rest following in varying orders.
- - - - -
Once they were out of town a ways, Cecil pulled back to Elias. "So you researched Scrying, and it was at your father's urging? That doesn't sound too different from my own story, though for me it was alchemy that was thrust on me in my youth."
Garnet kept an eye on the old man, but eventually decided to drop back and speak to Mana a bit. "So..." He let his simple word hang in the air for a moment. "How long? How long have you been carrying that sword?" He said, nodding at her weapon to indicate what he was speaking of.

The horse bucked and lurched forward, Elias holding on to the reins. His hands clenched so tightly his knuckles had gone pure white, he tried to look composed but was failing miserably at it. His face was a crazed mixture of a smile and someone about to be flung off of a cliff. Now he remembered why he didn't want to become a mage knight...
"Uh-uh." He stuttered as the horse moved, his face white. He preferred Kyro's Wyvern to this, infinitely. "Y-yeah... He wanted to find- find this artifact years ago." He said, as evenly as he was able to. "We studied a lot of artifacts. Also the theory and mechanics behind them." Elias calmed down slightly, his mind on something else besides the horse. "We attempted a few experiments at home done scrying, some of them even were mild successes. But we could never get the range to expand pass eyesight. The amount of resources it took to get it working made it incredibly inefficient when a good scout could do the same." Elias had an uneasy smile. "Hardly the revival of a long dead magic to make the Crimson Mage known. We needed the missing bits of the formula, which my father thought could be found in the Basin of Scrying. However... after a few trips to Ostia we gave up and took up a different endeavor..."
After all that, a sudden wide smile appeared on his face. "HOWEVER! That is nothing compared to what name I'll make of myself from my sheer magical skill alone!"

"Geez, sleeping in time like this." Mana ignored him and brushed the horse's hair with her slim fingers. She remembered the time when she was riding horse in plain, so much fun.
She turned to Garnet. "Yeah, he looks tired." Mana rode her horse towards Nathaniel's, looking him sleeping soundly. "Should I let him sleep? Hmm..." She placed her finger on her lips as she thought. Well, he told her to wake him, she would do it. Poking his cheek, she tried to wake him. "Hey Nat, wake up. Nathaniel..." She was frustrated seeing him still sleeping. She continued until he woke up, thankfully, she could control her temper now.
And then, they began their quest to find...something Mana didn't even bother to try remember the name.
On their way, Garnet approached her and asked about her sword. She followed his stare towards the Slim Sword on her waist. "Oh, I am not sure, but I think since I was nine years old, maybe." She didn't remember when she got this sword. "My tribesmen taught the children how to use weapon to protect ourselves. You know that the plain can be dangerous sometimes, especially since the war broke out."
She matched her horse pace with Garnet so they could talk more easily. "Flo...Eh, Garnet I mean." It was Elias and Nathaniel's fault, they always called him Flo. "I saw you fighting before, you sure have experience, something I don't have."

Cecil listened. Many parts of the story, about the difficulties of scrying, for example, sounded familiar to him. "That's what I'm hoping this book will be able to help with. If there's anything at all we can gain from it, then it will be of some help to me and my friends." He rode on a bit, watching the landscape scrawl by. "Hmhmhm... Yes, I've got some experience in Mage craft, but nothing like the men I'm trying to obtain this for. They are the real scholars."
He paused in his speech. "Hmm.... Boy you look like you could use some help with your riding. Let me help hmm? I'll give you the lessons my Father gave me."
He removed a pipe from a pocket hidden somewhere on him, cramming some sort of leaves down into it, and popping it into his mouth. A moment later, he lit it with a gesture of his hands. There was an intense flash of light, and the a slightly burnt smell, and he was set to continue.
"First, grip tightly with your legs. And remember to always hold onto the saddle horn with at least one hand..." He puffed for a moment on his pipe before continuing. "Next, be sure you never, ever fall off. Lastly," There was a glint of earnestness in his eyes at this point, as if this was the most important thing in the world. "Be fearless. Never let the beast know that you're terrified. You have that?" He waited for an affirmation, before nodding. "Good" Then he swiftly slapped Elias' horses rump as hard as he could and yelled "Yahh!!! Show'im who's the boss, Laddie!!!"
And off went the Crimson Speed Demon, riding as if on the back of a thunderbolt!
- - - - -
"I can imagine." Garnet answered Mana when she told him the plains could be a dangerous place, though he really had no idea what kind of dangers lurked in the plains.
Garnet saw where she was going when she mentioned his experience, and decided to go ahead and explain a bit. "I was a town guard for... oh... at least three years before I...." His town had been destroyed due an extremist mob from the Etrurian Church. Specifically, those who followed the Prophet. He'd been one of a handful who had survived. "... ehh... Before I became a mercenary."
At this, he noticed something up ahead. Cecil and Elias seemed to be speaking quickly. Cecil in particular seemed very absorbed.
"Well, Those two seem to have made friends, anyw-"
"Yahh!!! Show'im who's the boss, Laddie!!!" Garnet stared, slackjawed as Elias' Horse bolted. Then he shook his head, and put his face in both palms.
"Ohhh... Who have we gotten ourselves involved with..."

"My father is an accomplished Sage from Lycia." Elias responded to the man as they rode. "He has a penchant for old relics, like what we're searching for." He added, but his conversation took a sudden turn for the... well...
"I-I know how to ride!" Elias said back, though that typical crimson confidence that filled his every action and word were nowhere to be found. The old man insisted, on the point of Elias didn't even think he was listening. There was a quickly flash and the pipe he was smoking was suddenly relit, Elias could feel his eyes go wide in watching. Was that... His mind was suddenly reminded of the animal underneath him as the man started to lecture and correcting his posture.
He nodded with a gulp, and suddenly...
I HATE HORSES! Make it stop! Make it STOOOOOOP!

"Well, bandits from Bern mountains is the main threat. In fact, my village was...destroyed..." She paused, this topic brought only bad memories. Looking up, trying to smile, she continued. "That what happened."
"Oh, you were a town guard. Sounds boring...Uups." Mana used her hand to close her mouth. She just insulted someone's job, she hoped he didn't hear what she said. Trying to act normal, which was totally failed, she looked at his blade. "I know people who like big sword like that. Isn't that heavy?" She asked Garnet, she never used a big sword before. it just didn't suit her small body.
Suddenly she heard Elias shout...no...it was more like a scream.
Mana saw what happened and laughed. She wanted to help but that wouldn't make Elias better with his riding. Quickly releasing her grip of the rein, Mana stood on the horse's back. "Come on. You're Crimson Mage. You can do it." She shouted.

Cecil rode on, chuckling a bit now and the. He seemed mostly lost in old memories. Garnet didn't see the need to disturb him, although he was tempted to deck the man on Elias' behalf, even if the old man thought he'd be helping.. He'd started to feel an attachment to the excitable, young mage. It might even be similar to the bond that had existed among the guards. Shaking his head, and waiting till Mana stopped laughing, he picked up on where they'd left off.
"Yes, I'd say it's heavy, but I lost my buckler back there, in the fight. I figure if I'm waving this monstrosity around, people will be less likely to attack. Besides, it shouldn't take long before I'm used to the weight of it."
At least Garnet hoped that was the way it would work. He'd known a few people who used these large blades, but he'd never had very much experience with them himself.
"Heh.... The Guard was anything but boring. We protected the town from brigands, as well as dealing with any troublemakers. It was our Guard that made sure the surrounding areas were safe. Even the other towns called us in to help, because we were the best." Garnet was lost in his memories. It had been a long time since he'd spoken of home.
"Captain Bryant was fond of rivers, because wherever there was a river, there was a bridge. And where there's a bridge, we would set an ambush. One time, we even dressed up our men as a troop of nobles passing through with a train of followers. When the bandits hit," The merc put his hands together and made an exploding type gesture. "Pop! Out we all came, out from the hills, the wagons. We were the best of the best."

"I will remember this!" Elias cursed into the wind, his voice crackling with hysteria and malice. It almost sounded like he was laughing as he spoke, but he wasn't, he was whimpering. His hands grappled tightly around the horse's neck, his entire body shifting when the horse bobbed it to and fro as it ran. Damn, if he could look the horse in the eye he bet the monster would be laughing at him.
Still, he couldn't help but have his mind fixated on what the man had done back there. Well, the part of his mind that wasn't screaming like a little girl. The man used a spell without a tome, a small fire spell, but it was a spell all the same. He was a liar, he was no novice at magic. Using magic without a tome, no matter how small of a spell, is something that takes years upon years of training. The thing that really confused Elias though, was why he did it. Sure the answer of 'he really wanted a smoke' was alright for a normal person. But he did it right in front of Elias' face, whom he knew was a mage. Whom he knew would of found it odd. It was like he wanted to get caught, that wasn't a stupid mistake a person just did.
Well whatever. This could wait for later. Now is the time to cry. Oh and cry Elias shall.
"I HATE ALL OF YOU!"

"I HATE ALL OF YOU!"
Nathaniel woke up. He heard, Elias screaming something. He had dreamt he had been stabbed multiple times in the cheek. His felt soar so maybe something had happened. He sat up noticing they were farther out of town then he expected. Why hadn't Mana woken him up? Whatever, he went over to Mana and Garnet, if they wanted to talk to him they would.

Mana was surprised when Garnet made that gesture, but felt funny and amazed at the same time. "Wow, I thought it was boring at first, but now after hearing your story I think it is not." She rolled her eyes like she was thinking something. She was imagining what the bandits thought when they suddenly got surrounded by guards. "Well, I just heard from my friends that the guards duty was just standing near the gate all day."
"Hmm...At least you had something interesting to do. I spent most of my days just with training or doing laundry. Sometimes I ditched them and went to a river where my brother was usually sleeping here." Mana remembered those times. "Only to find my angry mother when we went home..." She giggled.
Mana looked over her shoulder, Nathaniel was coming towards them. He looked like someone who just woke up. Wait! HE-JUST-WOKE UP? Did that mean he didn't really wake up after her effort waking him before? She sighed and looked at him, "Sleepyhead. You're lucky because your horse followed us." She waited until he was near then stroked his horse. "Nice. You are a clever."
Talking about horse, she remembered about Elias. "Hmm, want to help him, Garnet? If not, he will hate horse for the rest of his life."

As Mana told him of her time growing up, Garnet's laugh could only be compared to clear water falling over the rocks. It was so fresh that he managed to forget all his old troubles for a time, and be at piece. He couldn't remember the last time he'd felt at so at home with other people, though, oddly, Francis had helped prepare him for this.
"Well, you've got something plenty interesting now."
Nathaniel started to stir then, and Garnet glanced over at him for a moment, before glancing away again.
"I think you're right, Mana. Why don't you go and give him a hand up there. I want to talk with Nathan a bit."
Garnet dropped back after a moment, to where the monk was riding. He just rode there for a bit, in silence. "I imagine the Prophet's reign has been hard on the less obedient churchmen, like yourself, hey?" His speech had the sound of sorrow in it again, but he was no longer a man ruled by sorrow. Now that he had defeated his grief, he could truly turn to making things better than they were, or so he thought. "So many men of the cloth follow that tyrant still...."

Nodding to Garnet, Mana instructed her horse to run faster, tightening her grip on the reins as the horse began to run at full speed. Elias was a little far ahead, but she could reach him with this pace, the wind was strong because her horse ran really fast, her hairs fluttering. She tried to keep her eyes open as she became closer to the crying Crimson Mage. "Elias!" She shouted bit her voice didn't reach him, she tried again but the result was same. "Hold the rein! Elias!" Mana looked at him, he looked scared.
Finally, she was in his right, her horse running at a same pace with his. She stretched her hand to grab his reins. It was not easy because the reins was waving wildly. "Tsk. What did that old man do?." Slowly, she tried to stand up again, but this time was different than earlier. She was in full speed, which made it harder to keep balance. After she was sure she could keep her balance, Mana watched Elias horse's movement. She focused on their pace, waiting for the chance, she inhaled slowly.
"Now!" Mana jumped. She made it, the timing was perfect. The excitement and fear ran in her veins at the same time as she landed on the horse' back. Quickly, she fixed her position and sat behind Elias. Her eyes looking for the reins as her hand gripping the saddle. "Where is it actually? Ah, there!" Elias' body covered the horse neck from her sight, she couldn't grab the reins. "Sorry Elias." She forcibly pulled his body away then gripped the reins with one hands, the other hand holding Elias so he wouldn't fall. "Stop! Stupid!" She pulled hard to make the horse stop. The horse understood and braked.
They almost fell because the sudden brake. Mana sighed, she felt kinda scared. "Are you alright Elias?" She asked.

Elias just kinda sat there, eyes looking manic, his hair moreso. (even compared to usual) His hand were around some imaginary figure, the was probably the horses' neck before Mana overpowered his frail mage physique. ERM, not that he couldn't stop it if he wanted! He just, let her overpower him, yeah that's it. He could of totally resisted if he wanted.
He turned a slightly frazzled head, smiling unevenly. "Th-thanks." His eye twitched slightly. He slid off the horse and looked it in it's big, evil, murderous eye of badness. He was SOOOO lucky that Elias didn't roast him right there. And he was thinking about it too, but no, this wasn't his horse. It should count itself lucky though, usually Elias was too lost in his own mind to care or notice when he did something wrong. It must of been the near-death experience giving him clarity.
"I... I think I'll walk." Elias grinned oddly. His eyes suddenly widening as he turned sharply away to violently vomit.
