Caught unaware by the Paladin's sudden movements, Karina fumbled and fell to the ground. When she fell, she did so in a way that her staff was caught under her, and while at the same time being held by Rayl, it snapped. She took a moment to stare at the heap of limbs and wood that was Rayl, she and their staffs, and burst out laughing.
"This is the most fun I've had in a while," she said between fist of mirth. "Are you alright?"

When Rayl heard the snap, he feared for the worst that he may have broken one of Karina's arms or something. Rolling over to his knees to check up on the still maiden, when she started to laugh he found himself falling back and over again in shock, though found himself laughing nervously before pulling a chunk of what was once a practicing staff from under him," If I can survive being hit by rubble I can survive having someone fall on me."
Up onto his feet, he extended a hand out to the pegasi knight, before he heard clapping. lifting his head up, he watched as guards on the walls, stairs, or around them were applauding the match: It wasn't every day you see your commander fall over a lot and be bested by a pretty little newcomer.
"Well...I guess that this 'spar' belongs to you...next time I'll have to stop teaching you and focus on hitting on you!"
OOC: you know, that 'hitting on' bit was an error, but I think I'll leave it in there for lulz sake.

Karina blushed, and tilted her head to the side a bit after hearing Rayl's comment and the guard's clapping. Her time in the wilderness had taught her to see small hints in an animal's actions to try and understand what it was thinking, but Rayl showed none of these. Had they need any other animal, they could just sniff each other for the telltale smells of attraction. Did he mean that to sound so... Oh, never mind. Just take his hand, she thought. Karina took the knight's hand and got to her feet. "I don not think I can be called the winner. If anything, this was a draw... You're really good, but that's pretty obvious. I mean, I don't think you could get any better. I have a lot to improve on... I hope I'll have time to." she brushed herself off and walked towards the fort's door. "Well, I suppose I will see you tomorrow, Sir Rayl."

Rayl stared back at her she started examining him...was it something he said? looking back over his words as the pegasi rider turned around, his face took on a grim expression for a moment as he realized his error, though his expression was his usual calm self when she turned back around to face him," Oh, and L- Karina, you'd best take the officer's quarters, it's right up there, left side at the top of the stairs...last thing you'd want would be to sleep in the barracks with a bunch of lonely men!"
He trusted his men, but still, nights in a fort were very lonely...that and how could his men, in such a lonely place, resist a sweet young girl in a short skirt...why did his mind keep going back to her skirt, anyways? It was just a part of the uniform, after all...

Karina smiled at Rayl, thankful for his offer. "But where will you sleep, Sir Rayl? I trust you won't have to sleep like a common recruit?" she asked. She wondered how he would react to her question. She wasn't trying to get him in the same quarters as she, but she was told that boys often thought that way.
I wonder how many woman he's been with... I'm sure he's had his share of gentlewomen callers. He must see me as a child, or perhaps even a pupil. But still, I can't help but wondering what all his armor is hiding... Her mind strayed from what she had meant to do this night. She had never thought that Rayl would have come out to spar with her, or even why. maybe he wanted to see me tonight...

Rayl looked back to her, not sure what to really say, but then just gave a shrug," I don't know, I couldn't sleep anyways. Tried to, but woke up hearing you practice...keep it up, you're pretty good with a lance...creative too." he flashed her a warm smile," Besides, I'm used to sleeping outside or in the stables, comes with the background, you know? Living with animals is something men and women of our profession do."
with this he turned to begin picking up the shattered staves along with the practice axe, setting them down on a crate before reaching down for the practice sword," Have you ever thought about trying something different Karina? Weapon-wise? With your footwork and the way you wield a lance, you could be adept at a sword one day...if you'd like I could teach you how to use one when mounted later, though I'm sure you're too tired for now." some soft chuckle as he made to put the wooden weapon away, looking back over his shoulder, opening his mouth to say something he may just regret:
"Don't you ever get cold in that uniform?" her uniform had been on his mind for awhile, and he just couldn't understand the logic of putting such a skirt on such a uniform if you hail from a place plagued by perpetual winter...

Karina looked at Rayl with surprise. He told her to go to bed in one sentence, and prolonged the conversation the next. "I have thought a bit about that. My teachers in Ilia often talked about how we would have to one day choose an axe or a sword. I was always told that with my frame, a sword would be best." She was aways told her was too delicate to wield an axe. Most of her teacher had marveled at the fact that she could even lift her lance.
Karina them looked down at her short skirt, and brushed her hand across her exposed thigh. There were tiny bumps, but she hardly felt the cold anymore. "I suppose we Ilian girls are more immune to cold weather than others... But I have though of supplementing my skirt with tights and fur-lines boots." she mused aloud. She flashed Rayl a quick smile.
OoC: short skirt, leggings, uggs. Karina wants to be a biddie.

Rayl looked her up and down as she told her story, oddly enough not replying as she talked about her teachers in ilia...though he still listened as always. "You probably should when we get to Bern Karina: You don't want to be driving all the men wild now do you? Well, good night, and I pray you'll have pleasant dreams. I'll be out on the watch if you'll need me." With this, he waved a hand in a quick farewell as he deposited the wooden weapon back into the barrel he obtained it in, and began talking to a patrolling soldier, apparently dismissing him from duty to go get some rest.
OOC: Eh, short post but whatever, I figure you'd want to get another post in before a time skip to morning or something. Also we'd probably want to wait after that so we can get Kelvin in tomorrow.

Karina waved back at Rayl as he walked off, thinking of what he said. I'll buy some more conservative clothes at the next village we visit. Or not... I do rather like the attention I've been getting. I never really got much. she smiled to herself, looking down as she walked.
Karina got back to the captain's quarters and undressed. She put on a night gown that was more concealing than her day clothes, laughing internally at that bit of irony. After washing her face and arms in a basin on the floor, she crawled into bed. Exhausted from sparring and the late hour, Karina fell asleep soon after her head hit the pillow.

A young man appeared from the woods, carrying a bag of tasty breads. He called out to the watchmen, "Hello again! I brought some pastries to thank you for your hard work again." Some of the guards within earshot came up to him, taking his breads with gratitude.
Ralph had been coming to this small border fort about once a week to give the guards a treat, as his way of thanking them for keeping everyone safe. It wasn't very far from his home in Pherae, and it gave him good practice for his baking skills. "Tell me, guardsman. What time is it?"
"Well, it's the middle of the night, Mr. Meglane. Not many people are up and about."
"I see, thank you. I'll walk around to see if anyone else wants something to eat." The guards gave him entrance, and he walked into the fort, now with only a half-full bag of breads.

standing close to the gate, head half hanging in sleep: the spar, however brief, had been just what he needed, and here he was, on his own will too! Well, such was life...he jolted up however when he heard the gates open and caught a glimpse of two of them on the outside of the gate chomping down one something, as a man came wandering in, garbed in red and blindfolded, with a sack over his shoulders...an odd sight indeed, the man did not seem inhibited in any way by his condition, but nonetheless. Moving forward, quieter than usual without his armor, he placed a light hand on the blind man's shoulder, and smiled an unseen smile," Excuse me, good sir, but is there something you need?"
He didn't know anything about this man, but he was apparently well known in the fort, as soon after the few soldiers still up and about on duty came flocking around, joyously shouting comments and praise to this 'Ralph' man.

"Eh? Your voice is familiar, a rare, adventurers voice. One that speaks with a hint of righteousness and humility. I'd never forget the voice of a man like you." This man, Ralph knew he had heard his voice before. There were some voices that Ralph would never forget.
"I remember, your name is Rayl, is it not? You came to my friend's bakery at a time that seems to be so long ago. It is not strange if you don't remember me, my name is Ralph. I come here every so often to give the soldiers a treat from our bakery. Care for something baked fresh today?" On the ground in front of Ralph was his bag that soldiers were grabbing pastries out of.

"Ralph...Ralph..." Rayl pondered the name for a brief moment, though it slowly donned on him: it was that moment with Alcibie, was it not? Looking down to the bag, he was tempted to, seeing as that brief spar and that they hadn't eaten anything since breakfast that morning," Well met Sir Ralph, pardon my forgetfulness, a lot has happened since then." with this, he slowly reached down to grab a pastry from the bag, holding it tenderly before looking back to the young man," But pray tell, why would you come out here at such a late hour?"

"I see no sun, all is always dark to me." He replied in a rather cold manner. "What then shall I know of when to sleep and when to rise? My only knowledge to these are when Bill and Caecus do not answer my call, and all I can do is assume that they are asleep."
He removed the blindfold wrapped around his eyes, but the pure-white optics gave no thought to focus on anything in particular. "A sad fate, is it not? To only miss something once it can never be regained."

Taking a step backwards, if only out of apology, he handed the pastry in his hand to another knight: hardly proper for him to eat it now," Pardon me, for I was only looking out for your safety...even with our work, there are still brigands about, even here in Pherae." another step back, and an apologetic bow that, while unseen, was still done as a sign of respect," If you wish my presence gone, you have but to ask, good sir, and I will be on my way."
