The others I agree with but this one I'm iffy about. Alan, Katara, and Matis had his respect as warriors then he was also in love with Katara. Other those three he didn't really show kindness to people. Jya was the first he showed a heart of gold to. Speaking of Jya, there has to be a trope that describes the fact she was able to get the "awwwww" effect from both Kenshin and Alcibie.

Hence the jerk part, Kenshin was always a dick but there plenty of times that he still did kind things in spite. it's what you do not what you say. I think, at least.

Was Kenshin already a sociopath before Hargus came into the picture?

Due to the lack of a real back story it's a "idk" Was Kenshin already a sociopath before Hargus came into the picture?

Drew's comment somehow ended up in the middle of the quote: "Due to the lack of a real back story it's a "idk"". I call it Plot Convenient Amnesia. (and now's when Rob pops up bringing up a trope that fits better)

tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DoomedHometowntvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DeadLittleSistertvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/KnightInSourArmor (I like this one) tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/JerkassWoobie Specifically for this: First, the character must be a jerk. Typically they are not a complete Jerkass, but even if they help people they're not just selfish or insensitive, they're outright cruel, insufferable, immoral, and/or amoral. They have a mean streak that tends toward a sadistic side; they delight in hurting others, whether emotionally or physically, and often have little patience for anyone who disagrees with them. They have a hidden, softer side. Many are clearly capable of being downright friendly, courteous, and kind, but either are too angry and impatient inside, or fear showing their softer side when not behind closed doors. Others are clearly Troubled But Cute, with a Freudian Excuse. As if in return for their bad behavior, the author seems to delight in placing them in unpleasant situations, yet to show that they are sympathetic. Basically, the universe hates them so we don't have to.

KnightWithSourArmor are jaded but still knights. The trope still talks about people trying to do the right thing.

Characters grow in time. I think he started out as a Jerkass Woobie but evolved into a Knight in Sour Armor. Or YMMV, whatever.
