There was a vague sense of movement, and then he was on the edge of the river near his old home. The sun felt... cold? That was odd, but otherwise the scene seemed to fit. He lay back and decided to take a nap. Things seemed peaceful enough here, and there was nothing better to do....
Whap! The hits registered finally, and Garnet opened his eyes to find a face full of smack coming at him. He coughed as he struggled for air, and instinctively raised his arm against another blow coming. Pain wrenched through the arm, and he felt himself tipping over to the side, simply rolling with the pain.
"Grah...." He coughed some more, clutching with his good hand at his throat. His voice croaked out unsteadily when he spoke, but it wasn't hard to tell he was mad.
"Fool girl! Keep hitting me like that and you'll end up saving these fighters the effort to kill me!" He closed his eyes and grimaced as he felt his arm's resistance to moving. The fight was still going on though. It had degenerated to a brawl, but they were still fighting.
"Help me with this arm." He tore a vulnerary loose from his belt and started trying to slip out of his coat. He needed to get the arm on the mend, or at least dull the pain from it.

"Come on Garnet, it worked didn't it?" Aleth replied in a cheerful voice, glad that the man was alive and spirited to say the least. The negative comments was probably because she woke from a good dream. Well, that was the only way she could explain it at the moment. Even as she got up, something whizzed past her from behind. Looks like the fight still hasn't forgotten them.
She carefully returned to a crouch position, finding that it would be safer then fully getting up. She helped tug the clothing off, whilst keeping an eye out. The fighting seemed to get even more intense, especially with the sound more yelling coming from the tunnel system. They better hurry it up before the big boss of these guys showed up, she did not want to face their leader alone.

With some help, Garnet was able to get the coat off and away from him. The Wyvern skin felt like it was being peeled off as it came away, revealing the crimson red of his breastplate underneath, and the re of his blood staining his arm. An arrow shot past him and Aleth as he started to apply his vulnerary to the worst of it. It wouldn't be a real fix, but it would help keep things from getting any worse as the fight continued.
The pain deadened a bit, and he looked in the direction the shot had come from. There were no more fronts of battle. Only isolated clusters fighting wildly among themselves. He did spy the archers though. A couple of them were at the edge of the fray, picking targets.
The red-haired swordsman pointed them out to his white haired heroine as he stood to his feet.
"Aleth, I don't want to get shot anymore tonight. I could use some backup to go and deal with those two."
The trick was going to be getting there alive. plenty of fighting in the way. He took a couple of steps forward, and immediately had to step out of the way as a pair of fighters fell towards him. He picked up the pace, dashing forward and grabbing an axman around the throat with one arm from behind, and grabbing his weapon with the other. One of the soldiers fighting in the cave made a slash down the bandit's front. He wouldn't be much longer for the world. The twang of a bow, and Garnet whirled towards the sound, ripping the dying bandit with him. A solid "thwump" seemed to catch Garnet's improvised shield, and knocked the swordsman back a step. He checked the man in front of him. An arrow was sticking out of his chest, and he wasn't moving anymore.
"Yep. Definitely dead." His attention snapped back up in front of him as an enemy jumped forward and swung his weapon at Garnet, who promptly shifted the dead body into the path of the attacker's weapon.

Aleth nodded as she saw a pair of archers close by. She knew that she would very well be shot if they saw her approaching. This was one time she wished she had another arm for a shield. Actually the idea of a shield wasn't too bad. She glanced around, while sheathing her blade. Garnet will need to fend for himself for a few moments.
"Coreh and Spence with me!" She called recognizing two of them close to one another in a fray. For once her socializing paid off and the two rushed over after easily finishing off their respective bandits. While they finished up however, Aleth had picked up her own shield, or rather temporary buckler. She motion for one to stand beside her while the other made sure they weren't flanked from behind. With all this in mind, she ordered Spence to bang his shield a bit, doubting it would fully attract the archers.
"You know what you're doing right?" Corey asked, his tone completely unsure about this whole idea.
"Yeah, just don't be afraid of the arrow, I've been a practice target before, nothing to be afraid off if it hits you on the arm or leg once or twice," she tried to encourage but only got a strange stare from the two. With that in mind, she began to charge forward at the archers, her partner having trouble keeping up.

Garnet let the dead bandit in his grip drop, but still held onto the corpse's axe. He leapt forward over the falling body, and headed straight for the archers, much like Aleth did. The little arrow slingers were always a problem for any army that let itself get mired down in close battle. They had to be dealt with sooner rather than later. Otherwise your forces ended up pincussioned and, you were slowly overwhelmed.
Unfortunately, Garnet seemed to be attracting enemies like iron filings to lodestones. He backstepped away and around a small brawl that pushed its way in front of him before seeing a bladesman of some sort taking a swing at him out of the corner of his eye. The red-haired Mercenary hero slung his stolen axe up and around, putting it into the path of the weapon coming for him. It was his own iron blade that some enemy combatant had picked up! Couldn't be having that!
The handle of the axe recoiled from the strength of the blow, and Garnet heard splintering. He wouldn't trust it for another hit. He did reach up and hook what was left of it around the blade though, before cutting loose and flinging both weapons down into the dirt. It was almost comical to watch the bandit trying to react to the heavy weapon's sudden descent as Garnet stepped in, following through with a sturdy fist to the face. He caught the man at the top of the temple, angling it downward. There was a quiet grunt as the man's head snapped down, but Garnet wasn't finished yet. He snapped his other fist out and down, sending the man sprawling to the dirt, knocking the iron blade fully loose.
The redhaired swordsman could just feel a pleased expression tugging at his lips as he suddenly felt the haft of a weapon slamming into his back. He was tilted forward and knocked to his knees from the impact. It was a rough fall. Getting up wasn't an option right then. He was within reach of his weapon now though. He reached down to grip his weapon, before whipping it out and back towards his foe. The bandit ended up merely jumping out of the way of the strike, the broken handle of some old tool used as a club in his grip.

Weariness was absorbed into his being. His body was drained, bruised, and even strained in some places. His head occasionally would start ringing from injuries sustained. But somehow, he was still on his feet. He stood his ground, like any man loyal to his people, and the Etrurian Nobility. Down with the Prophet! Down with his Herald! Down with the whole damn regiem which Saint Elimine's Church had been twisted into... Somehow....
The red headed swordsman stepped in and swung, planning to engage three enemies which the others could then pick off. Instead, thee heads fell to the ground followed a moment later by their lifeless trunks. Garnet wasn't going to argue with good fortune. All around him, he became aware of death. The death of those who opposed him and of allies. But this wasn't due to some claimed predestination. It was the work of axes and blades steadfastly cutting away an enemies vitals. Twisting, and readying his lowered weapon, he leaped and whipped his iron blade towards a fighter being backed into a corner. That one fell, a gouge chopped out from him.
That was pretty much it. It seemed kind of anticlimactic after all their struggle, but he was more glad that it was finally over for the most part. Now came the cleanup. And the recovery....
Garnet let the tip of his sword hit the floor and dropped to a knee recovering. He looked around and saw similar scenes, as well as soldiers helping allies recover. He should be doing that too, like them. He pushed off the blade in his grip, and tried to lift himself. But nothing happened. In fact, he was feeling pretty exhausted. Adrenaline wasn't helping anymore, and.... he reached over and touched his shoulder where he'd been shot earlier.
"Still bleeding, eh? Of course, you can't go through a run, two battles, and substantial healing in a day without feeling the effects, Garnet...." He was talking to himself now. He must be feeling tired. "Aleth..., you may have to take charge." He lasted a few more breaths before just kind of laying himself down and rolling into a stupor. There were flashes of consciousness, but it all felt too dreamlike for him to actually know what was real and what wasn't.

Echoes of sound, flashes of light, and the overwhelming sensation of cold assailed Garnet. It was like an angry sibling, always demanding attention. But whenever he did turn his attention there, he immediately began to feel worse. Cuts and bruises raged over his body, clamoring for his attention and he couldn't decide whether he was going to wake up. At some point, the decision was taken from him though. It was dark, and it was quiet. He was cold, but it wasn't as bad as it had been in Ilia. Honestly, Garnet felt ready to just let go. This made him sad. He'd not dreamed of this ending when he was younger. He'd not wanted to simply fade into dust, but what else was he going to do with his life.... The quiet began to envelope him, and he began to relax into it, whatever he was on. He wasn't comfortable, (It felt hard, and uneven.) but it was what he had. When suddenly he felt a burning liquid washing down his throat, and he surged from where he lay.
Hands held him down, and there was a great deal of noise around him as he even managed to lift one of the people off the floor before they got him back down. He rolled over to his side and let out a horrible wretching cough on the floor. Had they just.... He'd just had whiskey poured down his throat! He could still feel it and smell it. In fact, that was about the only sensation he had right then.
Slowly, sounds came back clearly to him.
"It's about time he woke up. Carryin him all the way back to camp was rough, and if he'd not gotten back from that, It woulda all been in vain."
Garnet coughed a few more times, before finally getting enough control of his rough voice to spit something out. "What happened.... Did we make it?"
"Most of us took some good nicks and scrapes, but we got them. Only a few casualties. It pays to have clerics and priests on hand, I guess."
Garnet took a moment to catch his breath. His breathing still felt rough and he still hurt everywhere. The pains were coming back. Someone had at least bandaged him up though.
"Where are we? What about the raiders we went after?"
"They didn't have healers on hand." The soldier gave a quick grin to Garnet, high on victory. That didn't answer his other question though.
"We're back at the Lance Captain's camp. She's moving us to a small town not far from here to resupply and look for recruits. Shouldn't be long before we're there. A couple of days' march time. Wake up, Buddy. You're gonna need those legs..."
Garnet heaved himself up, feeling worn, but not so weak as to fall down immediately. Time to wake up again.
