The jogging pace he'd set only lasted a few moments in reality. He decided that walking was plenty quick after beginning to trek up and down a few hills as he followed in Claire's trail. He'd thought himself a woodsman when he was younger. In truth, he'd only ever been a mere beginner. He could tell directions, and walk for several hours over rougher ground when need be. Since beginning his travels, he'd met people that put his abilities to shame. What had originally confused him about his outdoors skills, was not outdoors talents, but simply knowledge of the natural world, and its elements. In short, he'd worked smart. Not skillfully. He'd suffered a minor blow to his pride when he'd understood this, but it had amused him for awhile. Ahead, he could see Claire in the company of someone else. The both of them were still fairly distant, his friend riding atop her horse, and him using only his own two feet. At least this visitor to a dead land looked peaceable enough from here....
"Hello. Who's this, Claire?" The green haired sage spoke up as they got close enough together for him to not have to raise his voice. He adjusted his blue cloak over his shoulder so that it was more out of the way as he came to a stop, and tucked it back over his shoulder to keep it there. He was of average height and build, and looked remarkably young to be considered a sage. He didn't feel very sage like when he thought about it. He mostly just felt like a man who'd learned magic and begun tinkering with another form of magic. All those holy words in his lightning tome and lines on the pages still were beyond easy comprehension to him....
"I wasn't expecting to find many people at all when I came here. Maybe Ostia's prospects are growing?" It was a question directed to the newcomer. Sort of a roundabout way of discovering her purposes for coming here, and if they lined up with his. He still hadn't learned to take simpler, more direct routes in conversations.

Vanadis... Vanadis... Claire could remember this, it wasn't like she had problems with names just this one she hasn't heard before. Claire needed to hold onto hope that her dream was real and Christophe was able to get somewhere safer before the land turned to this state, even her new ally doubts people could be stranded here. She nodded and looked back as Aaron finally caught up, it's a good thing she wasn't too far ahead of him. "Aaron, this is Vanadis. She would like to aid us if that's okay with you."

Not for long, the friend of Claire arrived where the women were. He possessed deep greenish hair and garbed his body with a cloak, like magicians, plus a shoulder pad. Vanadis twitched a little wondering if the man was from Etruria, as she would doubt what good intention that country would have for the city they had done with.
However, the lancer stayed calm just in order to see what kind of aid this man was seeking. At least, he did not seem to be a violent vulgar.
Miss Claire already introduced her to her friend, 'Aaron' was his name if she heard it correctly. the blonde lancer bowed a little to Aaron, and said after glancing at Claire a little.
"Vanadis Lieven, a pleasure to meet you." Vanadis offered a hand shake, her violet eyes locked at his face to see his reaction, if not some suspicious response. "I heard from Claire you could use some assistance in order to rejuvenate my hometown. If so, I'll lend you a hand."

Aaron came up and took the woman's hand in a firm grip, meeting her eyes with his. He felt like he was being analyzed. Slowly disected layer by layer until she was satisfied with her understanding of him. For his part, he let her. He wasn't hiding his intentions or his goals, though at the moment those were both a bit grand. He had very little idea how to start, but maybe with three heads working on it, they could stand a chance.
"Nice to meet you, Vanadis. And, it is my intent to help. I'm just still at a bit of a loss as to what I can do to speed things. For now, all I can think of is helping what life there still is here. Alot of it was choked out by ash... and worse than that. There is good news though. I have yet to find any signs of the tainted corruption which was here. Life is returning though. I found some last night on a barren hill not far into the wastes."
Aaron backed away and tightened his pauldron down a bit on his shoulder. "It's not much, but right now, all I can think to do is try to shelter the little bit of life coming back here. More options may open up as we proceed.

"The land is one thing, but..." Vanadis muttered, as though she was not certain if she should discourage this nice person with her wording. However, she decided it would be best to notify him. "How would you convince people to return to this place? Could you promise them that Etruria won't burn them alive again, like what they did last time. This place...is like a massive graveyard for us Ostian now."
The lancer turned to the grave of her father just to confirm what she just said. For being one of the victims, she understood that the mental wound caused by such incident was far greater than this amount of physical damage. Thinking about the sudden invasion made her armed hand shiver that she had to hold it with the other.
"I'm sorry, Sir Aaron, I didn't mean to be difficult when you're volunteering to help us." Vanadis bowed a bit. She pondered about what the man said again. Thinking optimistically, if the land became good for agriculture again, some people might return, or even new people. They could start small, and took each step slowly and stability, until the land become lively once again. She wondered how long she could turn blind to her opinion and help Aaron proceed with this plan. "And yes, sheltering the good land would be a proper start, how do you think we can start though?"
In her mind, Vanadis still thought that they essentially needed a huge city wall around this new land, as great as possible, to fend off the future foe.

Claire didn't know what to say or do, Christophe would though. Only if she was more like him, more the reason to find him. She couldn't remain silent "Well... If the land can support life it could... Umm..." If she couldn't convince one person all the work Aaron and her will be doing would be for nothing. "It can inspire people to comeback, Ostia isn't going to be alone. I haven't been there but I heard what has happened in the past and one thing I've learned about Ostia, no of Lycia. No matter what happens we band together and rebuild, whatever anybody throws our way they will never break our spirits. We will prove to Elibe we're something not to be taken lightly." Claire's little speech even gave her confidence the three could accomplish anything.

Aaron's head lowered as he realized his mistake. He'd taken for granted that the Ostians would even want to return here. They'd always rebuilt before. This was their home. It held so much of their history. The tomb of Lycia's greatest hero and founder was here in Ostia.... But now that he'd thought of it, he couldn't blame them if they didn't want to come back. He'd done them a disservice by assuming. Still, Claire's reaction helped brighten his mood. Above all the other countries, Lycia was known to pull together in times of trouble, despite its scattered cities and rulers. And, there would be some people who wished to return.
"You're right. I can't promise that Etruria won't return to finish what they started here. Not alone at least. But Ostia has rebuilt before, and it will again. And next time, they won't be struck unawares with a city killing mage assault." The kind of fire that could devastate a city couldn't be easy to gather in this day and age. Thousands of mages must have been present to cast that kind of spell barrage. He still remembered feeling its echo the first time he'd seen Ostia after the invasion.
"The land's recovery will take years, and I'm not sure about how I can help it yet. I have some talent in magic, but I don't know if I can adapt it to anything that can assist here." He'd caused a cold snap followed by a rainstorm by accident once, when using fimbulvetr for the first time. He didn't have the best handle on controlling that monster of a spell yet though. So, while he could potentially learn to make it rain, experimenting with it would need to be done carefully.
"Maybe there's some resources left in the mountains to the west that we could make use of. Either way, getting to the far side of Ostia is something I'll have to do eventually. I need to see what's on the far side, and I need to see the city for myself."

"You people are really a cheerful bunch." Vanadis revealed a vague smile as she chuckled a bit. Clarie seemed to be good at cheering up, she appeared to be someone who can give her comrade plenty courage during a war. She could imagine such personality in most successful leaders. "Okay, please allow me to tag along, myself will probably be some use."
"One question before we go," The lancer said when she was about to move, but then chose to halt for a bit to clarify something. "Why do outsiders like you guys choose to waste your time doing a charity work like this?"

Aaron was glad to see Vanadis' mood lightening a bit. She'd not seemed to have much hope for the remains of Ostia when she came, which made him wonder about her reasons for coming at all. That was perhaps a discussion for another time and place though. Her question was more relevant to the now. He really wasn't sure he knew the answer right off the bat, but he knew that someone would have to do this work, and it might as well be him.
"I have my reasons. For one thing, my Grandfather is hosting many of the refugees from here and Laus at his facility. They languish there, as there's only so much people can do to stay busy." Aaron laughed for a moment.
"I'm sure the grounds are getting more work done to them this season than since before it was built, still that can only last so long. Those people need to have a home to return to, and this is the first step in making it safe again. At least, as safe as we can. We'll need to do more than simply rebuild before we can bring back the largest chunk of the populace though."
It wouldn't be right to bring people back here to live without a reliable method of protection. The green haired sage wasn't sure if Ostia had ever been flattened to this degree before. It would be a challenge to bring people back.
How about it, Claire? Your horse giving you any trouble in the ashlands?"
