She opened her mouth to reply, not sparing a moment to consider whether her answer would be yes or no, but hesitated with almost characteristic self-inspection. The answer was not difficult, already ingrained in her mind and heart, but that was itself disconcerting. After so long spent alone, it still felt wrong to so glibly admit that she had a companion, to possibly offer information that could be used again her, but... she wasn't being entirely honest with herself. Again. Forcing herself to stay in the moment, Nayru nodded nigh-imperceptibly, a light smile gracing her lips as she spoke. "Indeed. Young, but she shines as brightly as the sun."
The issue wasn't really that someone was going to use that information against her, she thought. Wise precautions when in close promixity to bandit territory, sure, but Ilia was not exactly a bastion of freedom to do as one pleased, and she didn't think that her companion would make for a very good bandit, if for no other reason than that he wasn't currently engaged in painting the walls in the blood of babies while screaming incoherently. Or whatever it was brigands and their type did when they weren't being murdering thugs.
Perhaps - she hesitated again for a moment, not sure how willing she was to admit it to herself, but plunged deeper into the rabbit hole out of sheer frustration with herself if nothing else. Perhaps it was less to protect anyone else as to protect the shell she had built for herself over the years. Keeping people out for so long, being friendly but never open... she had managed to keep from being unduly entrapped by attachments to others for centuries, and yet within a few short months, the fuchsia fireball had penetrated more of Nayru's defenses than the dragoness was comfortable with. Prepared for, that was. She wasn't really sure how she felt about it, which made objectively devising a response somewhat difficult.
Where exactly was Elly, anyways, she wondered absentmindedly. Probably off flying into a tree. Or a mountain, with all the wyverns in Bern hot on her tail. Which humans didn't have. Tails. That idiom had never really made sense to her - since when did humans have tails? Or was it trails? Heels. There were so many human idioms, and so many of them were far too similar for her tastes, that it was hard to keep track of. Maybe the tail one was a dragon-inspired idiom. Or she was just going senile in her old age. "I am certain that she is well," Nayru settled for as a response, sounding much less convinced than she had intended. Mostly because she couldn't shake off the feeling that Elly had managed to create a world-ending crisis even in the backwards town of... wherever the hell they were.
Hopefully Veigue would be around to provide a calming presence. Yes, she decided, Veigue was definitely there, keeping Elly from getting into trouble. There was aaaaabsolutely nothing whatsoever to worry about, and everything was fine, and god DAMMIT she was still sort of worried. Worrying her lip for a moment, Nayru hesitated again, not sure exactly how to respond to his suggesting in regards to finding the Ellypocalypse. Feeling almost embarrassed by the urge to worry about Elly's well-being, Nayru continued without planning her wording as carefully as usual, glancing around the marketplace in search of a familiar pink mop of hair. "She - means well, but she is young and... excitable... I'm sure she's fine. No trouble at all."
The dragoness wasn't sure exactly who she was trying to convince, and that minor issue bothered her somewhat.

"Youth... is a gift to be treasured. One should not always be in a hurry to grow up."
He could tell by the tone of her voice that she was troubled. The two were close it seemed, more of a mother/daughter relationship than merely friends. With fighting form as such was shown previously, it was quite clear to see that his companion was not used to having her young friend out of sight.
Hayle could sympathise. It was good to see such level of caring still exist. Few enough people these days cared about themselves, let alone anyone else.
Of course, that blasted cat helped fix any paternal urges that he might have had left. Cats. Always so needy and so aloof at the same time. Warm in their own way, but nothing compared to being able to emphasise with another human.
"Well, I'm sure that we'll find her eventually. One such as you described surely would not be a common sight in the mountains. Perhaps we should make some inquiries whilst we partake of whatever the market has to offer?"

"Mmh." Nayru kept her initial response to a measured mumble, but her mind was anything but able to move beyond it immediately. His words cut deep, a sordid truth she had learned through harsh experience. She regretted much in her life, but little more than leaving Erim behind out of childish stupidity, in her damn fool belief that she was being held back and belittled when Erim had only been trying to protect her. If she had known then what she knew now - how would that have changed her? Would she, perhaps, have been able to become something more than what she was now; free of the oceans of blood staining her hands and soul alike, free of an endless mountain of regrets?
Nah. She'd probably still find something to be miserable about. The dragoness smiled ethereally, resigned amusement and restrained pain alike seeping through. She had promised Elly, after all - but it was so much easier to make promises than to keep them. Old habits died hard. Even if she was determined to not fail, healing would take time. "...A lesson I learned far too late," she rejoined eventually, almost hesitant in her admission. "What seems simple in childhood is often anything but. Even when those wiser than us offer advice..." Nayru shook her head, heading off her thoughts before they could continue further. She'd been talking to Elly too much to be doing this whole 'talking about herself' thing to strangers. Her companion was easy to talk to and canny to boot, though.
"...My apologies - I have not yet introduced myself. My name is Nayru."

"Huh?" Elly paused at Veigue's question, blinking, before his words caught up with her thoughts. "Oh! Oh, yeah. Nana jus' vanished somewhere, I've no idea where she is. An' Heath's still at the stables. Nana wouldn' let me ride her through town." She puffed up her cheeks in indignation, crossing her arms. "I ain't a rookie anymore, I've learned to fly an' stuff by now! I ain't about to go crashin' into the stands again!" I think. The treacherous words rang out in her mind, unspoken, and she shushed her thoughts irritably, grimacing at the memories of her meeting with Nayru, not so long ago. Really, it was the commander's fault, and the entire wing barracks, they should teach pegasus knights to, you know, fly or something, it's not like they spent all their time in the air...their dumb drill exercises didn't count!
The teenager peeked around the swordsman curiously, following his gaze, unable to notice anyone of interest. "Hey, hey, Veggie, who did ya see? A friend? Ohhhh, I know, it's a bandit!" Her eyes shone with excitement as she turned back towards him, hands clenched into fists. "That's it, right? Whoa, you're amazin', you can spot a bandit in a crowd!" She punched at the air, her arm going high above her head gleefully. "Let's go catch 'im and hand him over to the guards! Then Nana will totes have t' let me fly, y'know!" She nodded to herself, already savoring her victory.
"Who is it?" She asked, looking around, her eyes darting to and fro before settling on the man Veigue had been watching. "It's the guy in the weird robes, right? The one all wrapped up? Huh, he does look suspicious, you're awesome!" She started walking towards the man, her steps filled with determination, oblivious to danger as she called out. "Hey! You!" She extended her arm imperiously, pointing straight at him. "We know you're a bandit! Hol' still, you're under arrest for, uh, banditry, an' stuff! Uh, in the name of the Illian pegasus knights..." she paused, before striking up a pose. "We'll punish you!"

"Oh, dear..."
The swordsman simply stood there in complete silence as he rubbed the back of his head, for even he couldn't keep up with the energetic teen as she was already gone within the moment he was going to finally say something in response. Though given that she was heading into potential danger, it was no time to stay frozen with momentary confusion. The robed figure didn't seem to make any immediate moves, though the moment Veigue caught sight of them gripping their sheathed sword as Elly approached, his natural instincts kicked in immediately as he dashed forth, the townsfolk in the way hurrying out the path of his quick charge.
When he sprinted past Elly, he performed a quick draw of his sword and aimed for the person's arm to try and quickly disarm or possibly cripple them. However, he didn't expect the mysterious individual to react with such haste, for they blocked his blade instantly and with no apparent effort as their swords clashed. However, what was more of a shock was their sword itself, which was quite similar to Kenji, his family's sword...and he remembers that mostly Sacaeans wielding those kind of swords. Actually having a little time to examine said person, their form was not that of a male as he originally assumed. But not having enough time to just think things out, he'd have to worry about that later. Didn't matter much anyway, since he was eventually defeated in the locked blades. To avoid being disarmed himself, Veigue released himself and forcefully slid backwards to gain some space in between, now ending up right beside Elly again.
"...Tch. Not bad." He silently commented, seeing as the opponent was no ordinary sword fighter. He was beginning to piece things together though as he remembered what unfolded before he darted in. Whoever the person was, they probably weren't going to even attempt to attack Elly if he didn't react. It seemed like the moment he looked over when she approached, it was then that they made it seem like they were defending their self...so it was now clear that he was the primary target.
"Elly...you might want to sit this one out. It seems like our little friend here is only after me..." He then locked his sights dead on the unknown person, slowly walking back at them as he kept his weapon out and ready.

"Eh? Sit it out?" Elly stared at Veigue, dumbfounded, a dangerous look of determination creeping into her eyes. "I'mma warrior, too, a knight, I ain't gonna leave ya to fight alone!" She pursed her lips in frustration as neither seemed to pay attention to her, focused on their battle, the loud ringing of swords clashing filling the air. True, she had left her lance at the inn with Heather's bags, but how was she supposed to know she'd be involved in a battle for love and justice in the middle of town? That was still no reason to ignore her! How dare they! She wasn't some lost rookie anymore...okay, well, maybe she wasn't that good yet, but Nana said she was going to be a heroine, that had to count for something! She took a step back, scowling, her hand going to the small knife at her side, but vague memories of Nana and Veigue's teachings pierced through the haze of indignation; rushing in with a knife against a sword user was just going to get her hurt. She had to think. Okay! She paused, biting her lower lip in frustration, almost shaking in place as she struggled to restrain her instinct to rush in. Well, she couldn't just stand there and watch Veigue fight like some kind of helpless villager. So, that was out. She couldn't rush in waving her knife around blindly, either. Besides, they were trying to capture the bandit, not kill them.
The teenager's eyes flitted from side to side, settling on an empty cart leaning innocently against the side of the alley. She turned, sprinting away from the fighting duo as she rushed towards it, knocking away the blocks of wood around the wheels holding it in place with a kick. Taking hold of the handle, she heaved, wincing with the effort; she had never been the strongest in her class, but the cart began to move, slowly at first, gaining speed quickly. She smiled to herself; this would teach that bandit to not underestimate a knight of Ilia! Her expression turned to one of worry as she realized she couldn't control the cart's momentum anymore; she struggled to keep up, now running at full speed. "Veigue! Outta the way!" She called out, panting as she fought to keep her hold on the handle, letting out a shriek. Why did it always have to end like this?

As Veigue was fending off the mysterious sword fighter, he realized Elly slipped away, wondering where she was going. Before he could even attempt to look in the direction she was heading, the enemy's blade was coming at him horizontally. This forced him to duck down for dear life as he could have been beheaded if he was any slower at reacting. Each time he attacked though, his opponent seemed to keep up with his quick paced strikes. But their counterattacks were lightning fast...to where they seemed to surpass his own agility and he couldn't counter just to make sure he wasn't going to end up hit. But with each clash of their swords, he felt the enemy's attacks were beginning to strike more and more accurately.
When the opponent acrobatically back flipped from his next assault, Veigue took advantage of their recovery and darted right in. Still, it resulted in the opponent barely blocking the attack and they were once again locked into a clash of their weapons, both trying to overpower each other.
"...Huh?!" Veigue was planning on making a melee move next, however he heard Elly's warning loud and clear as he immediately heard something pushing towards them really fast, pulling his attention away for the moment to see the cart coming at the both of them. At first, he was just going to push himself off and roll away...but he had a real sneaky idea brewing in that head of his that he had to make the best of in such a short time. The opponent was thrown completely off guard, giving him the opportunity to break their stance by sliding his sword off theirs and pivoting himself to their side as he delivered a strong roundhouse kick to their back. He sent them towards the incoming cart and as such, he rolled away in the cold street out of the path.
The mysterious sword fighter was completely overwhelmed by this, unable to do much but end up being smacked head-on by the surprise rolling cart of Elly's, Veigue watching from the small distance in between as the force of the collision knocked the sword fighter off their feet and was rocketed backwards several yards until they landed a good distance away on their side. The Sacaean swordsman stared at Elly as he was completely frozen with surprise, feeling a little sweat drop on the side of his face.
"...Huh. She's a lot more clever than she lets on..."
It was indeed a surprise...and effective too, seeing as the mystery person was having extreme difficulty rising back to their feet. He didn't really know what to do next. They were pretty defenseless in the position they were in and if he'd move fast, he could interrogate them...but beforehand, he sheathed his weapon and did a hesitant thumbs up towards Elly while saying, "...Uh...nice job." before slowly pacing over to the downed sword fighter.
As he approached, he noticed them recovering a heck of a lot faster than he anticipated, hitting a sprint to try and possibly kick them back down. The person apparently realized his intent and rolled out of the way the moment he sent his leg flying towards them when he arrived. After a while, the opponent managed to get back to their feet and attacked Veigue again with their weapon. He didn't have time to get into proper stance, so he unleashed his blade and gripped the hilt with both hands, placing all his might into his counter, which both ultimately ended up clashing again and having their blades locked onto each other. As this continued, he heard the person finally say something for once.
"...Man, and here I thought this would be easy. I wasn't expecting the girl either...!" Her feminine and rather soft voice spoke in a rather fatigued manner.
"...What? That voice..." Veigue began to loosen his hold, but they soon pushed each other off their blades. Veigue wanted to say something else, but he remained quiet as he stared the person down.
"I didn't expect you to improve this rapidly, too..." The mystery girl now began to pull off the robes tied around her face as she also dropped the hood of her cloak off, revealing both her face and her lengthy black hair that was quite similar to Veigue's colors. She smiled brightly as she finally sheathed her sword. "...Long time no see, little bro."
At that point, Veigue literally dropped his sword due to the shock. Out of all the times that he wished for the reunion, he didn't expect it to be now...and he wasn't even focused on the fact that they were fighting. His hands began to tremble a bit more as he was trying to take in the moment before moving...but that itself was beginning to be difficult.
"...Lena? Is this...some sort of dream?" It was quite difficult to accept it, but the more he allowed himself to calm down and take it all in, the more that reality was crashing down on him.

"Hayle. That's Sere." Waving his hand to indicate his oft annoying but still lovable traveling partner now currently nestled in his hood, Hayle glanced away somewhat embarassedly. He sensed that it was maybe not the best subject to talk about and well, was best he remove his foot from his mouth before he lost toes.
Casting his eyes about in an effort to find some sort of segue, they came to rest on a market stall with an array of leatherworks. Of particular interest, a utilitarian belt with a bronze buckle in the shape of a dragon was hanging enticingly from a wooden stand.
"Ah... you were looking for a belt, yes? Did anything on that stand over there perhaps catch your eye?"[/color]

Elly closed her eyes in panic as the cart approached the fighters mercilessly, completely out of control."A-aaaaah!" She let out a yelp as the cart collided with something, sending a violent jolt through the wooden structure; already struggling to keep up, the teenager was thrown off the handle, landing roughly on the ground with a loud gasp as the air was driven from her lungs. She coughed weakly, wheezing, struggling to recover. Why were there so many pegasi in the sky today? No, wait, those were clouds...she blinked, wincing, struggling to her feet shakily. The cart rolled on, out of control, until a loud crash resounded from further down the street, angry curses following shortly behind. She winced, not quite from pain, her eyes wide. Uh-oh.
Well, at least they had the bandit! The town guard couldn't be angry at them if they had managed to catch a bandit, right? She turned to look at Veigue, grinning weakly at his gesture, pushing a strand of hair that had come undone from her braid away from her face, a sense of elation filling her. She had finally done something right! Victory was theirs, and she had actually been useful for once, not just a burden on their team. She thrust her fist into the air, feeling renewed as energy surged through her. "Yeah!" She turned towards the bandit, a confident smile still on her face. "Sorry, but that's how it works, y'all can't escape justi-" She trailed off, her expression growing sour as the bandit started to recover. Wow, they were tough, even a heroine like herself was winded after pushing that cart! "Veggie, watch out!" She called out to him, but the swordsman had already reacted, parrying the bandit's slash with his own blade. Whoa, Veigue was so cool! Her eyes widened in shock as the bandit revealed her identity; no wonder she was so good, and they did look similar, but a bandit was a bandit, after all.
Just as she turned to ask Veigue why his sister was a bandit, though, she saw the wanderer drop his sword, and a chill settled in the pit of her stomach; what had the bandit done? Veigue had lost his weapon, he was defenseless! She...was she so fast? She hadn't even seen the blow that had knocked away his sword. Worse, yet, Veigue looked shocked, too, and wasn't reacting at all...he was going to be hurt by the bandit! "Leave 'im alone, you bully!" She screamed at the top of her lungs, rushing towards her, determined to distract her long enough for Veigue to pick up his weapon. Ugh, why wasn't he moving, too? An evil person was right in front of them!

"...Whoa, whoa, whoa! HEY! Take it easy! I'm on your side, kiddo!" Lena panicked as she barely managed to catch the Ilian and halt her with both of her arms. She tilted her head towards Veigue, still struggling at keeping Elly at bay. "S-she's...your friend, right? A little help here would be appreciated!"
The swordsman witnessed Elly coming at his sister before they even collided, but he was still in the shock of the moment to really react. But since he was mostly calmed and returned to his usual demeanor after regaining his sword, Veigue crossed his arms as he passed off a small smirk. "...Ah, I dunno. I would, but I think you should start talking."
"Fine, fine! Just get her off of me..." Her hold on Elly was weakening due to her still being exhausted from the cart earlier.
"Hah...she hasn't changed at all, at least." Finally deciding to move now, Veigue eased over as he rested his hand on the trainee's shoulder right after Lena released herself and jumped back to give herself some distance. "It's over now. Thanks, Elly. Let's hear out her reasons now, all right?"

"Then it is a pleasure to meet you, Hayle, Sere." Nayru spoke with the hint of a smile as she nodded to the cat, on her face as well as her words. A reference to how silly it was to be introducing themselves properly only now, perhaps, or mayhap it was simply the bracingly cool air and familiar bustle of the marketplace that served to make her feel more comfortable than otherwise. She would never truly be a part of the throng, she knew, but there was a sort of vicarious joy in simply watching people go about their business in peace. More than once she had attempted to become a part of that idyllic existence, but it was always a fleeting pleasure. Humans had such short lives, and she had her own inner demons to contend with.
The ringing eruption of a crash, accompanied by several shouts, roused her from her reverie in short order - as did the crushing sense of dread, the sinking realization that she had an educated guess on what was responsible for the cacophony. The manakete's shoulders slumped as she glanced in the direction of the commotion, willing herself to ignore it and carry on with her life and never ever look back. "...And that will probably be Elly." She considered ramming her face into a wall. Several times. Both the pondering it, and repeating the action until the thinking stopped.
A longing glance at the leatherworker's stall, weighing the options of upgrading her wardrobe or dealing with what was probably Elly's latest catastrophe. "I - ought to check and see. Just in case. Perhaps people will need help. Or she has managed to accidentally unleash the Demon King and drown Elibe in a sea of shadow." In retrospect, some things you just didn't joke about; Nayru had the sinking feeling that her erstwhile companion would find a way to accidentally do so given half the opportunity.

"...Demon King?" came Hayle's somewhat faint reply. Whatever the commotion was that was happening a short distance away, clearly it was enough to cause Nayru significant distress. Did he really want to get involved with another disturbance so early in the day though? Knowing his luck, it wouldn't take much more for the local authorities to brand him a troublemaker and evict him from the village with due haste and no care for his safety.
"Are you sure it would not be... wiser and less frustrating to just let the authorities handle this? I'm not sure it would be a good idea to get involved in another ruckus today."
With a wistful glance over his shoulder at the food stalls, Hayle resigned himself to the high probability that eating would not be happening very soon. With a somewhat resigned sounding sigh, he squared his shoulders and dredged up what he hoped was a note of cheerfullness for his voice.
"Well, if you wish to investigate, I suppose I can tag along and offer my assistance."

"Less frustrating, perhaps. Wiser... arguable. The only wisdom is in not leaving her alone with a sharp object for longer than absolutely necessary." Her response was a touch absent-minded, but the idea of Elly in a minor tiff with the authorities was absolutely the last thing that Nayru wanted to deal with in this lifetime or any other. They didn't need to start another war so quickly after the last one between Bern and Ilia died down, really.
"But I'm... certain that it's just, ah, a misunderstanding. Possibly involving landing her pegasus. Into something. Someone. Again." Nayru flinched before setting her jaw resolutely, determined to build up the courage to find out just what sort of nightmarish scene they would be walking into. Hopefully the carnage would not be too absolute. "-And thank you, Hayle."
With that, she broke into the teeming mass of humanity, forging her way through the tide to reach the seen of the ruckus as quickly as possible. For better or for worse, there was little in the wise of blood, undead monstrosities, or demon kings to be found - just an upended cart, a garishly pink walking apocalypse, and what appeared to be Veigue having sprouted an extra head. Oh. No, wait, he had just been... in the path of the cart? Along with the other person?
There was a fantastic explanation for this, the silver dragon decided, forcing her way through the edge of the crowd with an expression as serious as nuclear winter plastered on her face. Yes, there was a fantastic explanation for this entire debacle that absolutely was not Elly's fault in the least. No sir. It had been a bandit, or an accident, or... something that was not Elly. "Elly. Veigue." Greeting both perfunctorily as she strode into the clearing, Nayru continued to cling to that increasingly-unlikely hope. Yes, there was a FANTASTIC excuse for why Veigue was holding Elly back from murdering someone. Absolutely fantastic. So good it would be told in legends for millennia to co-
Oh.
Not entirely certain how to react, Nayru froze the instant she caught a glimpse of the third individual's face, a rush of information she that had been lodged far back in her mind tumbling to the forefront of her consciousness in an incoherent jumble. It was not often she ran into people she recognized.

Trailing a short way behind his silver-haired companion, his head awhirl with a cacophonous jumble of thoughts as to the insanity that he was now involved in, Hayle was uncertain of 3 things.
Should he laugh, cry or run screaming in the opposite direction, leaving this clearly gods forsaken place behind? Because clearly, he had gotten involved with a bunch of madmen. And women.
Surveying the destruction with what he could hope was a neutral expression, Hayle was struck by an inexplicable urge to pound his head into the nearest wall. Repeatedly. Alas, stoic was his default setting and deviating from the norm would only make the situation worse.
Noticing the tension in the lines of his associates body however, made him pause. Was one of this new trio a danger, perhaps? Stealthily moving his hand towards his quiver, Hayle slowly drew an arrow, holding it loosely in his hand, ready to be used at a moments notice.
Hopefully it wouldn't come to that, but with the day going tits over teakettle already, he could not be sure.

Elly pursed her lips, her mind registering Veigue's words, but her heart refused to acknowledge them. Why wasn't he helping her take down the bandit? All bandits were evil. They were heroes, and heroes fought evil. It was simple, wasn't it? Black and white, right? She stiffened at his touch, her shoulders tensing for a moment before slumping in defeat. "Fiiiiiine," she said, rolling her eyes as she gave up her struggle. The teenager glared at the taller woman as she stepped back, crossing her arms.
She wasn't sulking. Pegasus knights did not sulk, after all.
She rounded up on Veigue, righteous indignation filling her as she desperately tried to persuade him. "It ain't like a bandit's reasons are goin' to change anything, you know! They're all liars, an' thieves, an'..." The young knight trailed off, only now thinking back on the bandit's words. She turned back towards the stranger, confusion etched on her features. "Our side?" She bit her lip, deep in thought. If she was on their side, she couldn't be a bandit...but, Veigue had spotted her, and he'd said she was a bandit, right? She couldn't remember...but, Veigue wouldn't lie to her, so that meant she had to be lying, and wasn't on their side, so she could be a bandit! Ha! Nana had said she had to stop jumping to conclusions, and she had been absolutely right, of course! She had unraveled the bandit's dastardly plan to confuse her. Her expression lit up with triumph once more. She'd won!
The young knight turned as she heard her name being called by a familiar voice. Wasn't that neat? It was almost as if thinking of her friend had made her show up! Unbelievable! "Nana!" She waved to the tall adventurer as she approached, beaming with pride. "I did it, I did it, y'know!" She waved her arms around the scene proudly, almost sparkling with enthusiasm. She had finally done something right! "A true heroine like ya said an' all!" She waited for a few moments, anticipating the shower of praise that was about to fall upon her. Yes, the crowd would raise her over their shoulders, and a parade would be held, and...wait, the crowd? She looked around herself in puzzlement. When had so many people arrived, and why were they all staring at her? Her gaze turned towards Nayru, finding her standing in...what was that expression? Shock? Awe? Probably the last one, given her accomplishment. "Nanaaaaa!" She huffed out her name again, tugging on her hand insistently, her tone urgent. Why wasn't she paying attention to what she was saying? "I caught a bandit, y'know!" She looked up at her friend expectantly, completely oblivious to the archer and the readied arrow shaft he carried.
