It was a very inconspicuous building for better or for worse, one without windows of any sort and only one door. Still Elias found it easily enough, he had been here enough times to have the path mapped out in his mind. Elias had a keen sense of direction after all, he used to do cartography when he was younger. At the least his mother made him read maps for her, since she was hopeless at understanding them. So even with the town as a shell of it's former self, buildings in ruin and abandoned, he found his self navigating the streets with only a trifling difficulty. If anything the inconspiciousness of the house made it more suspicious as it's one of the few buildings that hadn't been broken in to, though some people clearly tried. There were gouges in the stone door, like someone tried to force the thing open, without success no doubt.
It stood relatively small, about the size of a small house with one floor, most of the home was underground after all. It was much larger on the inside then it appeared on the outside and with the way the floors declined gently it was almost unnoticeable when you went below ground. The front door was made of a heavy slab of stone and seemingly without any door handle or means of opening. It looked like it was sealed of or something of the sort instead of being the way in. Of course you needed to know the secret to opening it. Elias approached it, feeling the chips in the stone. He pulled at each of the fingers of his white gloves with a gentle tug, revealing the naked flesh hiding underneath. It wasn't often he took his gloves off, but this was something he had to do with his bare hands. He took in a deep breath and focused the magic of his fire tome into his hand and centered at the tip of his finger and then slowly let the breath out. The magic was a small flicker, a spark at best, as he drug the burning finger across the stone slab. The places his finger touched burned with a red glow as it followed the path his finger took, drawing a symbol into the stone itself. He withdrew his hand only to place it again to draw the second part, and then drew away once more when he had finished. The symbol wasn't complex or difficult to make, but it wasn't one a person would just guess at random, most people didn't even realize the stone reacted to magic. Much less to a simple fire spell.
As he finished the heavy stone began to shift and shake, slow retreating down into the earth below, opening the home for him to explore. He remember to put his glove back on as he went inside, the stone sealing the way behind him once more shortly after entering.
------
There was a bit of irony in this situation, Elias was the one all requesting them to be on time, but it was he who would be late here. Or late-ish. It seemed that he wasn't the last one though, there was still ladyface and girl to wait for, but it seemed coolguy and talldude were all ready for this little tour of academia. Good, good. Elias waved with a lazy grin. "Hey, you've made it, good. I hope you found the place alright." Elias said as he approached the two. "I mean it's, like, super confusing to walk around when everything's all drab and bleh." He looked around the area as if searching for something. "Sorry I'm a bit late, you guys seen the others?" He said as he looked, as if they were going to pop out right behind him or something.

"Useless city guard", spoke Oya to himself as he made his way back to the meeting point. The pirate was well ticked by this point. It seemed that the guards had taken it as their civil duty to prevent plants from growing in the cracks of their wall. The entire wall from the inside was clean of any weed or root. Oya could only chalk their efficiency up to the recent crisis. It seems the guardsmen were dotting their i and crossing their t. Plants growing in the wall weakened the structure and the guardsmen had no intention of letting there be a breach as a result of weed growth. If Oya wanted more samples he was going to have to go outside the city.
"A complete waste of time. Hopefully the monster hunters had some decent information", spoke Oya. Which he doubted. The whole organization was probably filled with meat heads too eager to cross their blades with a beast claws than to study and record information. There was nothing wrong with a good fight, but fighting was not the reason humans remained on the top in the world. It was through knowledge and understand that humans were able to exploit the weakness of lesser creatures and rise to the top of the food chain. Even the mighty dragons stood no might against the ingenuity and thinking capability of humans.
As Oya looked up from his internal monologue he found himself the only one there at the time. It seemed he was the only one back at the time and had returned a bit earlier than everyone else. "Well since I am early I might as well get a bit to eat", spoke Oya. The pirate walked off to visit the local market and get something to snack on. By the time he returned everyone else was already there. "Sorry about that", spoke Oya in his feminine voice. "I came a bit earlier, but no one was here. So I left to get something to eat and I ended up comping back late."

Edrick looked up from his book as the others of the group entered the building, well except for Nacht, the creepy one, but oh well. Maybe he had left or something, it has been a while after all. He was about to address Elias' question, but before he could get out an answer Oya walked up behind him, saying that she'd been here earlier. "Well the building is alright, it probably couldn't do too much better under these circumstances though." For how the rest of the city looked the building was quite nice, but by many other cities' standards this was mediocre. Well at least in his experience it was. Actually, he probably didn't have a place to talk as he hadn't been to too many cities exactly, mostly small towns and his home.
"Well we're all here except for Nacht, so what exactly are we going to do? look through the information they've gathered?" That was one of the things they could do and probably the easiest. They could also maybe go out with them to gather information on them, that might be more benefiting, who knows what they could have possibly missed on what information they'd gathered up to this point. Hopefully Nacht would get here soon, or maybe the group could just move on. It wasn't nice, but that guy really creeped him out for some reason.

"It's fine. I dunno how you can eat, I'm too excited." He balled his hands into fists and pumped them up and down with a wild smile. Girl seemed to be all girlish, tallguy seemed to be all tall, and coolguy was being cool and quiet. Ladyface wasn't anywhere he could see, which was a bummerino. Elias crossed his arms and frowned a bit. "Oh well, I'm too impatient to wait any longer." He at least he was honest about it. "I'm sure he'll catch up later. Or not. I dunno." The mage shrugged. He looked at tallguy. "As for what we're doing, well you're pretty much on the nose there. I mean it isn't like I'm planning on there being a live specimen, though that would be wikked awesome and totally useful, it's a bit much to expect. They probably don't know a whole lot actually. Most of the mages left Laus for Santuraz when the monsters began to show up. The ones that remained might know something, if they aren't busy tending to people like dying and junk."
"I mean we could always do a little field work and see if we can see the zombies in the wild, it shouldn't be too hard with how they're supposedly crawling all over, but I'm not sure how useful it'd be. I've actually seen a dissected revenant, it's gross. Disgusting really, oh and the smell, makes you retch. Point is, they're pretty much just a person inside. Whether or not it's just a very good facsimile created by magic or literally a revived corpse we can't be sure. The innards are too decayed to get a good reading." Elias explained, he's done a bit of legwork on this subject before they even arrived. He's been studying monsters for a bit now, though not entirely effectively which is what prompted the field trip. After all when the only thing you have is a lot of 'I dunno's then you don't really know a whole lot. "Anyways, at the least we'll know how to kill them. Which might give a hint as to the forces that animate them. I hear "the brain" a lot, but I'm not entirely sure if that's true or not. I've set quite a few on fire and that seems to shut them up. Not the wolves though, buggers are fire retardant."

"hmmm", spoke Oya as he began to think on what Elias had said. He had not ran into a remnant before and fighting one would prove to be a entertaining series of events. Plus he would like to get a closer look at the magic himself. However it seemed that fire was effective against the walking corpses, but that was probably more too the fact that the body is burning more than damaged to death. Then again the rising temperature could cause the brain to over heat. Thus destroying the brain without having to pop open the skull.
"Maybe the temperature could have and effect on the brain", add Oya in a feminine tone. Oya made sure to keep his disguise up while he was with the group. It was too late for him to reveal he was a guy and this was starting to get truly interesting. "Speaking of which you mention that the wolf monsters were resistant to fire", spoke Oya. "I wonder if that had anything to do with elder magic that might be in their bodies, or more to do with their fur structure. If we were to capture one of these monsters alive, or simply kill it and then test its hide resistance to fire we could get a better understanding about them. Not to mention a chance to discover fire resistance material that could be uses in later situations to avoided burns."
Oya was back on his path of destruction. If he could discover something here to aid against the power of fire magic and the burning pain that came with it he might find a useful tool out of this whole trip. "I suggest we go monster hunting", spoke Oya.

Reid remained quite as the others were talking, pondering on what they were saying. "Elder magic cannot protect one for fire, at least from what I've seen about it. Just because they're fire proof doesn't mean they're magical, it could have been an evolution of some sort, if they were around a lot of fire mages it could have been an adaptation to combat them. We may have to do some field experiments on them if we're lucky enough to kill one." Reid stopped talking for a moment as he looked at Elias "If we do find any sort of monster charbroiling them isn't going to help any, do you know any other spells that aren't fire? Perhaps maybe an ice spell so we can preserve the body?." Reid wanted to get a hold of one of the walking dead's body's, one theory was their blood was tainting the soil, killing all life. He wanted to gather their blood to test that, but it would require plant life that's not from Lycia to do so. "I agree with the little one, it would be more beneficial if we set out to find real answers out side of what others think."

Two of the other wanted to go out into the field to study the monsters; it seemed like a good idea, samples would offer a good chance to study the corpses and the compounds that may be affecting the body like they were pointing out. Hopefully the corpses didn't have anything contagious that might effect any of them, that would be really bad. But other than that one thing that might be a setback all other reasons pointed to yes. "I think it may be beneficial if we were able to study some specimens out in the field; It might give some helpful insight about the creatures."Now all that was left was for Elias to agree and they could be off, assuming he didn't want to stay in this dreary town any longer than necessary.

"Eh, the bodies I examined weren't burnt to a crisp, they were sliced and diced by some dudes." Elias shrugged. "Of course I'm more then willing to get a second opinion. I'm not exactly an expert on anatomy, I mean I've been studying it lately but I've been studying a lot of things lately. It makes it hard to focus on any one thing as a result." He crossed his arms as he thought a bit, his face skewed slightly. "I heard that there was some of those mauthe doogs during that big old forest fire in Ostia like years ago, after Ostia was smoked the first time. Er, second time. First time would be the dragon I guess, it was after Etruria blew it up. Before the whole lava swallowing the place whole. Geez. Poor Ostia. However it was only rumors, so I can't be sure if that's right or not. I mean I'm not sure if it's relevant or anything, but those buggers have a history with fire and not really dying to it. I wonder what could have caused it?"
"Ice spells? Erm..." Ice spells. Well... "Not exactly. I mean, I don't have one. I don't even have a good fire spell right now. In fact I'm kinda running low on tomes." He chuckled nervously. He took in a deep breath before shrugging. "Though I know where I can get one." He said with a frown. "If it'll help our research, then I don't have much of a choice."
"But sure, I'm down for some monster hunting. Still since we're right here and everything we might as well see what they already know inside. I'm sure the monsters will still be there in a few hours. Maybe there'll even be more, who knows? Zombies are tricky like that." Elias smirked, losing his moment of awkwardity and replacing it with more awesome. "That way we can prepare as well, these creatures aren't really to be taken lightly. They've basically annihilated this kingdom." Elias gestured at all the nothing around him. "I'm a pretty good doctor though, so I'll take care of getting medical supplies." Crimson cleric over here.

"Well Elias has a point", spoke Oya. "If we just run in there blind we might just end up getting ourselves killed. If we are going to go monster hunting we might as well stop by the guild. We can not only get information about how they fight and their tendencies, but we might also find out were they are at. I am pretty sure they have stocked up on a few good items to help deal with the badies by now. Not to mention we will be doing them a huge favor in both man power and in research knowledge, and at the very least if they do not decided to share their secrets we can at least get some information from the wounded near their guild hall. The scars on the body tell more tales than any book in my opinion."
"Not to mention", spoke Oya adding a extra comment in the end. "I am a bit tired of staying in this city. Believe it or not but this place is kind of depressing."

Reid started to pace back and forth after Elias spoke, disregarding Oya. The chances of more of them appearing if they wait did not sit well with Reid, combined with the poor state this city was in it was very unlikely that they would get anything useful from people here. He stopped pacing and turned to Elias "No offense my good sir, but by judging the state the city is in I doubt they'll have any useful information unless they were really bad at fighting. Then when you factor in what you said before, the monsters are something not to be taken lightly giving them time to reproduce in population would put us at a greater disadvantage. I cannot speak for you guys but I'm not a fighter." Reid had wished to set off on their journey as soon as possible because science.

Edrick sat there listening to Eli Ramble on about the Mauthe dogs, zombies and how much Ostia seemed to like getting blown up. But the Ostia part he already knew about, and the fact that monsters were there, and the lava. Poor Ostia, the Lava didn't even make sense, How does the earth just split open like that?
Upon listening to the other speak he turned to Oya with a confused look. "You do realize that we are at the guild right now." He throws his arms open towards the guild building next to them. "Are you sure you were here earlier? Eh, doesn't matter. And if you guys need supplies that you should get them, I'm set on them myself. And it is good to have a healer like you Elias, especially with where we're going. Hopefully no one will need it though." Hopefully if they needed supplies the others wouldn't take eons to get them.

"I'm not suggesting we mull over the details for days on end, I'm just saying a little preparation can prevent a lot of harm. Even if they don't know anything particularly worthwhile, they should at least know how to kill them. Something that might be useful if we're trying to fight them." Elias stopped for a moment and shuddered. "I don't think revenants reproduce. Or if they do, I don't want to see it." It seemed coolguy was in a huge rush and thought that taking the two seconds it would take to see if there any useful information to be a waste of time, they weren't in a huge amount of danger right now though. The Silver dudes, that guild with the cool logo, they keep the monsters from getting too far into the city. Still there was something to be said about being prudent, he wasn't sure what that thing was, but he was sure it was wise and insightful.
"I still need to get supplies and an ice tome, so I'm going to be taking a little bit no matter what we do. Unless you wanna go ahead without me, but don't be crying when your leg gets chomped off and I'm not around to help you grow a new one." He looked around a little bit. "Also that other dude still isn't here." Elias mentioned with a groan. Maybe he left? Or maybe they were just moving too fast? Oh well. "How about this, you two check out the guild real quick. Meanwhile I'll get things ready, and you can plot our course of action. Shouldn't take too long. Maybe half an hour." He pointed at girl and talldude, then finally at coolguy. He was a bit bummed since he wanted to check out the guild, but looks like it didn't matter. He needed to head back to his home real quick. Or, well, homeish place. Whatever it would be called. He didn't really have a home, more like a base of operations. Anyways, there was Fimbulvetr tome back there. He was hesitant to just, sorta, take it, but desperate times etcetera etcetera.
"We should be outta here soon. So don't worry your head." The mage smiled. "You say you're not a fighter, but I am. So stay behind me and everything should be cool. Relatively speaking."

"You don't know how to fight, or you don't like to fight", asked Oya in a curious tone. As much as he could tell the guys had to at least know magic. There was no way he could move around in the world without knowing how to defend himself a bit. Then again Oya was not truly sure were this guy usually stayed. Oya was a man of the sea and fighting was second nature to him. Bern was pretty much bandit territory and meant that fighting was a way of life. For all Oya knew this guy grew up in a field of flowers.
Oya was a bit smug about the whole conversation with Reid and then Edrick came and smashed his confidence to dust. Oya had not realized that the door was right there, but he knew he was in the right location. Still it was completely embarrassing for him to be called out like that. If he was out at sea he might have punched him in the face, but such actions were not appropriate for a lady. Unfortunately for Oya he was acting like one, and there was the bonus factor that people on dry ground did not take too kindly to being punched in the face. Though pirates out at sea did not either, but there was a roughness code out on the waters that was acceptable there, but not here. Oya stayed his wrath, but a bright blush crossed his face from embarrassment. Oya hated his pale skin sometimes. It showed his emotions far too easily.
"Whatever", spoke Oya. Then the red mage began to talk. It seemed that he forgot something important back at his home.
"Fine I will go ahead and take a look at the guild", spoke Oya as he open the doors and walked in. He had a lot of questions to ask the monster hunters and it seemed like he would have little time. Off his head he had already formed a few. Was monster blood acidic. Does their blood attract more. Are their furs fire resistant. What does their insides look like. How effective are axes. Do they have unique saliva.

Elias returned to his home where he retrieved his father's Fimbulvetr tome, feeling sheepish all the while. Like he was doing something naughty, and was afraid to be caught. Stealing cookies from the cookie jar, of course he was far too old to be worried about such a thing. It didn't mean that the feeling would ever go away. This tome was his fathers, Elias even remembered when it was left here. His father left it there in case some sort of accident caused him to lose what he had, stolen, fire, any number of things. It was a good idea in retrospect, considering their last home was destroyed in a plume of ash and fire... The fact this tome was never recovered though...
He held the blue book in his hands. It was weird, he was so used to the fiery red of Volcanon. The two tomes were as different as night and day. Still he could feel the spirits dance about him, spirits of water, spirits of frost. He touched the cover, feeling the binding. Across it's cover was a burst of white, it looked like a snowflake. Or a crystal made of ice. It would take some getting used to, to be sure. He touched it once more, held it his arms and held it close to his chest. Breathing in the air slowly, and letting it out as a frosty puff of white.
He held out his arms, opening the tome, the pages turning on their own as if possessed by some unearthly winds. The runes and sigils inside began to glow an icy blue, he took it in. Breathed in the magic into himself, felt it swirl among him. Channeled the ice, directed the dancing spirits. In one hand he held the tome, in the other he held naught but the air. Inside the space began to form a crystal, slowly but deliberately. It mutated and twisted into fractals of frost and ice before growing solid. It was as if he was holding ice itself, and in a single instant it shattered in his hand. He let out the breath he had held, sighing. He was trying to practice his precision over the spell, not his strength. He wasn't completely used to it, Ice was fundamentally different from flames. The spirits that commanded the elements were no different. He'd have to take his time, he couldn't expect to have the mastery he once held over fire as quickly. He knew he would get it though, he's always been good with the spirits. It was the reason his father adopted him after all. His natural talent in magic.
He snapped the book close and put it away inside his cloak, attached to his belt where his Volcanon once laid. A grin on his face. He ignored the implications of the fact he held that tome might suggest, and simply continued on his business. He was researching monsters! Come on get excited! MONSTERS!
He left his home with a doofy grin, the same type he always wore, the stone slab sealing itself behind him. Hopping up on Demon and trotting across town on his steed. They went hunting for monsters, but didn't learn anything particularly new or interesting in the process. They would do what they came here to do, and quickly be away to Ostia. The ruins where their next stop, another place his Ice tome might come in use. If the heat was still as intense as the last time he had been there.
