Shugo simply sat there and listened. It was an inspiring story. It seemed that Marric father was a man of both Valor and bravery. "Did he really do that", asked Shugo as he looked on. The young lad had regressed a bit back to his younger days after hearing that story. He looked on doe eyed and in awe.

If the good General said so... But my father said he fought AGAINST Ilia, my mother always said the same... Marric frowned. Were his parent mistaken or had his father fought with the rebellion in Bern? That would explain why his father never spoke of Eren, but that would mean Eren was lying about something. Why his father defected, maybe even the story too.
If Eren had told the truth however, that would make things far too confusing for Marric to comprehend. If Marric's father fought for Ilia, why had he taught Marric the ways of a BERN soldier? Likewise, if he had fought for Ilia, and it was as the General said, why did he leave Ilia? Nothing made sense for the moment, and he was obviously having trouble thinking something out, as it showed.

"Well, you're a sharp one, hmm?" Eren acknowledged. He hadn't wanted to disclose this... Well, the kid did have a right to know, he supposed.
"Your father joined the Rebellion.
We didn't agree with our paths... Mine was the service, his was the opposition. We met one day. My lance and his. Nobody dared interfere... We danced a tango of sorrow... Of loss, and what-ifs. Of friendships torn asunder, of bonds built and broken. We danced, and the ring of steel on steel was our accompanying melody.
Your father was a damn good fighter. Almost beat me, too. He gave me this," Eren said, motioning to a scar on his arm. "His lance almost impaled my arm, but Mika turned and all it did was puncture the edge. But... I left him with a neat hole through his left forearm that day. We both retreated... To nurse our wounds, I suppose. Even if I could have subdued him, or him me, I doubt we would have killed each other... But everything was tainted after that. It was after a few more unsuccessful raids that he stopped appearing in the sky. I thought he'd retired.
Guess he died. It's a damn shame. I would've liked to apologize."

It seemed the plot thicken. For a while Shugo thought that Eren was lying, but after hearing what he said about the rebellion and them fighting it made sense. Still it make the young rider begin to think. Which side was right in this conflict The rebels seem justified in their quest to retake their homeland from a foreign power, but the loyalist seemed to have a point. Shugo had never put much thought into this even though he was from Bern. He never thought on the war and never really had a side. In truth that was thanks to his parents. They kept most of that away from him. Valin did not talk about it much either so he was not sure which side he was on. Even that Butorega, the brigand who in the end was responsible for the loss of his family, did not speak much of the war.
"So which side is right", asked Shugo. He did not mean to speak it, but the words just came out of his mouth.

Marric let out a deep breath, he was never one to hold his thoughts back, but Eren claimed to be an Ilian general, even before he realized he said it, he grew a bit nervous with his opinion.
Bern belongs to its people, not Ilia. He'd grunt and cast a glance over to Eren Berrata, he shared his father's sentiment all the way. Even his mother admitted that she did not blame rebels for fighting for their homeland's freedom. He knew little of the politics or reasons for the conflict in general, but he knew that he was as much at home in Bern as he was in Ilia. Bern in his mind should not just be another territory withing Ilia, it was its own place, mountainous and rugged. One had to be resilient to survive in both the crags and mountains of Bern, and the snowy hills and freezing tempratures of Ilia. Not only were both lands his home, they reminded him of his parents. His mother was pale, beautiful and dangerous, an embodiment of Ilia. His father, a harsh, rugged man who was a tough as the stone on a mountain.
He knew he had no place to speak his opinion of the conflict, for him, if he chose to fight for bern's rebellion, he'd be fighting his mother, and the only man who could tell him of his father's exploits and past. If he fought for Ilia, he fought against what he thought was in the right. To choose one over the other would mean letting go of something he held dear, and he wasn't sure he was ready to do so.

"Don't think that I disagree... It's a damn shame, what happened. But we lost. Simple as that. And I happened to throw my lot in with the smart side, the one that gave me a career and safety and a clean conscience. I served my duty as a soldier. Now I'm done, and I can sigh over Bern's fate all I want.
But that's beside the point.
Anything else you want to know, Marric? I'll be leaving to rest soon, and I will be gone tomorrow. There's nothing more for me here, anyway."

You were such good friends with him... How about i answer something for you. he'd offer. Good to see the man wasn't as hotheaded as his father. If he had said that about Ilia, he'd have no doubt that Oeniye wouldn't have acted so calmly as Eren had.

It seemed that Shugo might had laid a land mind with that question. It was not his intention, but he seemed to have stirred things up. Still it sparked a question in Shugo's mind. What side was he on. His parents decided that they did not want to think about it and kept Shugo from really understanding. What was he going to do? Shugo was no a novice anymore. He was a soldier. He had been in many battles so far. What he decided to do could change the fate of his homeland.
"I am sorry", spoke Shugo. He was no longer thinking about himself. He had broken what could have been Marric link to the past with his misplaced question. "I am sorry I asked the question", spoke Shugo again. "It was not the time, nor was it the place for it."

"Don't worry about it, Shugo. It needed to be said. Now that it's out in the open, we can move on.
Yes, Marric... I would like to know something," Eren said. There was so much he wished he'd said and done, but now, time had eradicated all hope of that.
"Where's your mother? I'd like to speak with her, one last time."
Rising from his chair, Eren paid for the drinks and stood waiting for Marric to answer.
"Oh, remember to meet here in the morning, you all," Eren noted. "That's when we'll receive our pay, and then we part ways. I'm interested to know where you all will be heading."

Shugo left the inn for a while and bought Luna some more food. After that he cheeked her into a nearby stable and went to bed. All the fighting had taken a lot out of him. Shugo slept well that night and awoke the next morning to receive his pay. Even still the question about Bern still weighed heavily on his mind.

Last I heard she was headed to Etruria. That was months ago, she should be back in the Capitol by now. He'd shrug. His mother had been packing last time he spoke with her, he wasn't worried about her doing something stupid, after all she was the most level headed person Marric knew. He had heard that her troop had flown in to the capitol a weak ago from some caravan captain headed to Bern. Hopefully she was with them.
Marric still didn't understand Eren, why would he need to speak with Marric's mother? She was an Ilian Pegasus Knight, sure, but she mostly worked as an external Mercenary, not a military unit. Odd, but perhaps Eren had military matters to discuss with her or something, or he was going to tell on him for supporting the rebel cause, but he doubted it.
I'll meet you in the morning then.

"Good night," Eren said, walking out of the tavern.
So Marric's mother lived.
Maybe he'd be able to find her... And make his amends. Then, he'd be able to explain himself. Maybe even spar. She was always a good practice partner.
Damn. He'd not forseen this coming.
The next morning, Eren returned the goods to the village authorities, receiving and dividing the rewards among his crewmembers.
"So. Where are you all headed to? I personally will be moving toward Ilia's capital city; I'd be interested to see where you men will be traveling, as I enjoyed working with you. Of course, if you'd like, you may accompany me, but... It won't be the most interesting of affairs, I'm afraid."
Without waiting for a response, the Brigadier General saluted his comrades and exited the tavern, mounting Mika and soaring into the sky.
