"How did you ever get into this military like that, Gaitsu! Kevin, come up here and show this new blood correct stance!" Instructor Rodriguez barked out, his tone sending Gaitsu into a near nervous wreck. His nerves didn't calm, especially with Kevin standing up, looking very bored with what was happening. Like he had already done this with so many others before.
"Gaitsu, just relax. Its all routine. We haven't been in an actual war in quite some time now." With a few soothing words, some unexpected patience, and the instructor barking in the background, Kevin was able to calm Gaitsu down, and show him the correct stances they were supposed to be learning that day. It did his mind some ease to know that not everyone there was going to yell at him.
Over the next few days, Kevin and Gaitsu were paired up enough times that Gaitsu was starting to look up to Kevin's calm, composed nature, and general fearlessness when it came to dealing with their instructor. So when the fated day when the two would have to cross spears came, Gaitsu was torn between his feelings of brotherhood, and his need to prove himself.
"Gaitsu, you have shown great progress over this last month. You are still far from being the Soldier we need, but you are far from being the little Inn keeper's child you came in as. Today, you and Kevin will have a sparring match, so I can better gauge your growth. We have Priest Morris here to heal your wounds, so please, go all out."
Kevin, spear in hand already, nodded to Gaitsu as he stepped up. "Its time." He took his stance. "When you are ready, we will begin." Gaitsu closed his eyes, and calmed himself, before shifting his right leg behind his left, sliding his right hand lower than his right on the spear's shaft. He opened his eye's, nervousness reduced slightly.
And in that same instance, his spear cut through the air, stopping short of an attack. He looked at Kevin, as Kevin's spear met his, a greeting between friends and rivals. That done, He pulled his spear back and made a quick thrust, knowing that it would never make it to its intended mark.
Kevin tapped the shaft of his spear against Gaitsu's, pushing the spear head well away from his body, and, with the same momentum, spun around with his spear to try and cut Gaitsu's chest
Gaitsu's initial thrust having been deflected, he too twisted with the momentum of his spear, but angled it down, hoping to catch Kevin's spear and knock it down, glancing his own spear up to hit Kevin in the face with his spear shaft. But his spear cut down to sharply, and missed Kevin's completely. His body, already moving with the momentum of his spear, he was unable to withdraw fast enough to get away from the impending strike.
Kevin's spear passed just over Gaitsu's, and cut his now downcast arm, and nicked part of his chest, before glancing off of Gaitsu's spear shaft. He took a step back to reposition himself.
Gaitsu, in a new kind of pain stepped back hurriedly, after recovering from his mistake. He gathered himself, and moved in for the attack again. He stepped back, then, gripping his spear in his right hand, at the butt of the shaft, swung widely at Kevin.
Kevin shook his head, and simply stepped back and watched as the spear missed him by a mile. He lunged forward, aiming a thrust at Gaitsu's stomach. He pulled back before the attack would have met its mark. "You still need some work, Gaitsu." He called, as he looked to their instructor.
Before the instructor could say anything, another Soldier came running up to him. They had a hushed conversation, then he called out, "Alright, Gaitsu, you obviously need field training. Kevin, you, Gaitsu, and I will go out to take care of a little bandit problem."
"Not before I heal the boy's wounds, you don't." The priest said, coming close to Gaitsu with his staff in hand. "This won't take away the pain, but it will heal your wounds." He said as he used his Heal staff on him. "I would come with, but my duty calls me elsewhere. Don't get killed."
Some traveling occurs
Kevin and Gaitsu were slower than Rodriguez, and fell behind. This gave him a chance to bring the bandits out of hiding, and hurt them, before the two recruits arrived. When they did get there, the bandits numbers were already lowered to three lackeys, and their boss, who was already running away. Rodriguez decided now was the time to let the 'children' become men. He watched carefully as the three bandits came in at him, he picked his moments, letting the recruits get closer, as he slowly cut the bandits down to a manageable size for them, then, faked a grievous wound, as one of the bandits swung a wide strike, the Axe breaking through his armor, but missing his skin by meer inches.
As the two watched as their instructor was struck, Gaitsu screamed out, lunging forward as the one who attacked Rodriguez was still off balance from his wide strike, thrusting his spear through the bandits chest. His anger, frustration, and inexperience put him in a position of being unguarded, as he tried to pull his spear from the falling, lifeless body.
One of the remaining bandits, both of which were emboldened by the fall of the Soldier, moved forward for an easy kill. As he drew back to cut Gaitsu in half, Kevin, finally recovering from the shock of seeing Rodriguez fall, rushed up, and sliced his spear through the air, cutting through the bandit, who was fully exposed.
The final bandit looked at his two fallen comrades, and looked to his boss for orders, only to see that he wasn't there anymore. He turned to find the two recruits standing, spears ready. Grunting, he gripped his ax and waited for one of the two to act. Kevin was the first to move. With rage in his eyes, He lunged forward, his grip on his spear to loose to keep the spear true to its course. As the spear tip dipped away from the bandit, the bandit brought his ax down, cutting into the spear's shaft, sending it down to the ground, and breaking it in half.
The bandit then brought his ax up again, and struck the weaponless Kevin, cutting through his arm. Kevin screamed out as his for arm was cut through. His free hand instantly came up to grip the severed stump, trying to stop the blood from flowing. He looked up at the bandit, fear, pain, anger, and sadness all mixed in his face. The bandit simply laughed at him, pushing him away with his foot, as he turned towards Gaitsu.
In the instance that Kevin attacked, Gaitsu was only steps behind. He was sent flying past the bandit as Kevin's spear hit the ground and tripped him up. When he was able to get back up and turned around, he saw that Kevin was on the ground, and the bandit was turning towards him. His world darkened around him. He could feel himself moving, his feet running, his arms moving, and something wet on his face. He could feel something hitting his spear, and turning, then his arms seemed to disappear.
As his mind cleared, and light returned, he saw his spear, broken, but the two halves sticking from different parts of the bandit, The spear tip half was stuck in the bandit's chest, while the broken half was shoved through his stomach. Gaitsu was on his knees, tears streaming down his face.
Rodriguez had jumped back up when Kevin was hit, and was at his side within seconds. He ripped Kevin's shirt to tie off the severed arm. He looked up to see Gaitsu moving with the fluid motions of a first class soldier, but his eyes were dark, as if his world had clouded. He had run up, spear raised above his head to the left side. The bandit had jumped forward, to cut him down while his weapon was raised, but Gaitsu had stopped mid run, so the Axe rushed to the ground harmlessly. Gaitsu had moved the spear down to push the ax into the ground, but the spear had hit with such force that it had broken in half.
The spear broke between Gaitsu's hands, so he still had a hold of both ends, jumping backwards, he twirled the spears in his hands, getting them into better position to use. The part with the tip, he pulled above his head, and threw at the bandit. The bandit at this time, had just stood back up, and the spear entered his chest. He looked down, surprised by the sight. At this time, Gaitsu had rushed up, and with speed that seemed not his own, and shoved the broken tip of the bottom half of his spear through the bandit's stomach.
(This over leveled feat of strength is not going to be a normal thing. I was simply trying to show his pain and anguish overwhelming him, and his body trusting itself, since his mind and inexperience was no longer hindering him. After this, he will return to his novice skill level)
Gaitsu looked up to see Rodriguez, hunched over Kevin, and his rage flew to new heights. He stood up, and ran over to the two, swinging his foot, catching their instructor in the face. As Rodriguez fell back from the kick, Gaitsu lunged at him, gripping the soldier's armor, and began yelling at him. "How could you! We needed you! Why would you set us up like this? Because of you, Kevin is....." Tears continued to stream down his face.
In a pained voice, Kevin called out, as he forced himself to stand, "Gaitsu, stop. Instructor Rodriguez only did what he thought was right." He stumbled forward. "You shouldn't be mad that I wasn't good enough. All I ever wanted was to make a difference, and to these people, "He motioned to the town around them, "I have." He took another step closer, then fell to the ground. Rodriguez pushed Gaitsu off of him, and rushed over to help Kevin.
"Gaitsu, you may not appreciate my ways, but today, you learned the horrors of war. You learned how real the dangers are, and how easily a situation can be turned, one way or the other. Victory isn't decided by numbers or skill, but by luck. Even the most skilled fighter can be overwhelmed by a sea of recruits." He pulled Kevin up, Kevin's good arm draped around Rodriguez's neck. "Today, you have become my most experienced student. Most of my students don't see combat. Those that do rarely survive. Not only did you survive, you gripped victory from the jaws of defeat, and allowed your partner to leave the battlefield with his life. He may never fight again, but he will live, and that is what is most important." With his free hand, he motioned to Gaitsu, "Now, lets go. Training will resume tomorrow. You did good today, but you are still far away from being the soldier we need."
Gaitsu, Rodriguez, and Kevin limp back to their base. [Gaitsu leaves the post]
