Ace just finished a small job that had a decent pay. All he had to do was escort a caravan from Santaruz to Laus. He got enough pay to afford food for the day and possibly two more extra days. Ace was quite familiar with Laus since he had to live there for two years before he began a career as a mercenary. It was a bustling city now since Ostia fell. The thought of Ostia brought memories of Ace's parents forward.
"Ostia will be rebuilt one day and then on that very day, I will set foot at my parent's final resting place." Ace told himself in a hushed whisper.
Ace traveled a few streets in Laus alongside his steed Troy, who was named after his father, to look for the bakery that had the kind owner. She was an elderly woman that was quite generous to Ace in how much he had to pay for her bread. She even put a little treat in for Ace usually. As Ace came up to the bakery, he opened the door and let off the little ring from the bell hanging next to the door. The old woman smiled at Ace and gave him a basket full of white and sourdough bread. Right in the middle of the two loafs of bread was a crumpet.
"I put in a crumpet just for you to try. It has a special taste to it." She smiled as she held out the basket. However, her tone turned a bit more serious. "Ace be careful out there. Supposedly people have gone missing from Laus. Just be careful out there when you're working. She finished in a worried tone, but once again smiled and said goodbye.
"Don't worry, I'll be careful ma'am. That crumpet looks great by the way. Thanks so much!" Ace said enthusiastically towards the old woman. He put down some of the money he earned from his latest job in return for the food. He walked outside the building and heard the bell go off as he passed the door. Ace went towards his horse and put the bread in a satchel that was tied to his saddle. As he was about to hop onto his horse, he noticed a few young people reading a large piece of paper on a tree across the road. Ace pet his horse as he walked past him towards the paper. As he got closer he was able to make out what it said,Come to the fort just east of the capital of Laus to learn how to defend yourself against any type of enemy. You may become so good at fighting that you could fight for Lycia!
"Wow this sounds like a great idea!" A girl next to Ace exclaimed as she read the sign and then started to make way to the eastern fort. Ace liked the idea of being able to defend himself against any enemy. Yet, in order to learn all that knowledge would take quite a long time. This seems a bit sketchy to me... Ace thought to himself. It could just be trying to gain people for a Lycian army, but something still seemed off. Ace decided to just try it out and go check out this fort east of the capital. He went back to his steed Troy and hopped up onto him. "Let's go Troy. Keep your eyes wide open on this trip." Ace told his horse as the pair began to trek out of the capital.

Come to the fort just east of the capital of Laus to learn how to defend yourself against any type of enemy. You may become so good at fighting that you could fight for Lycia!
These were the words that Lorna stared at, squinting her read eyes and quietly sounding out each word slowly. She couldn't really understand half of it but she did manage to get the gist. Laus, Fighting, Enemy, and Lycia...something about a fort too. So there was something combat related at some fort nearby? Lorna smirked, proud of the slight improvement she had made in her writing skills and excited to find out about a new place to test her lance arm.
Of course, she was still a recruit, but among her fellow recruits she was easily one of the most promising. In her mind anyway. Lorna DID manage to win most of their spars and scored high on training drills.
Still, she had no idea where this fort was. She only knew that it had to be around Laus somewhere.
Lorna gazed around. She had seen a man with a horse staring at the paper before she arrived to it. Perhaps he was going to attend this event as well. After a bit of searching she found the man and cursed out loud, drawing the attention of a few civilians around her. The man had mounted his horse and had begun trotting away all ready! She cursed that she didn't have a horse of her own and sprinted after the pair.
"Hey!" She cried out, slowly gaining ground and weaving her way around a few confused and startled Laus citizens. He didn't seem to notice right away so Lorna made sure to call out again, "Hey blondie! Blondie on horseback! Hold a mome-damn it, wait a bloody second!"

"Hey blondie! Blondie on horseback! Hold a mome-damn it, wait a bloody second!"
Ace heard some shouting behind him as he was about to turn the street. He pulled the reins on Troy to get the horse to stop. Ace whipped his head around to see who was shouting and to his surprise it was a girl a bit younger than himself. She wore dark clothes along with having burgundy hair. Her presence just seemed dark and mysterious. She seems like ... an interesting character Ventus thought to himself. Troy snorted and Ventus was brought back to senses. He rode over to her to see why she was shouting for him. Was she hurt or in danger? Maybe she needs help?
Then he wondered about the strange event happening at the mysterious fort east of Laus castle. Ace knew he had to get there quickly just to make sure he wasn't late for the "super" training. If he could get this training then maybe he would have what it takes to help rebuild Ostia and eliminate all the threats there. I could possibly get revenge for my parents by helping to take down Kraft. The sign did say this training could get me to become knight of Lycia. Ace continued to think to himself until Troy once again snorted to get him back in reality. Ace blinked and realized that the girl was in front of him.
"Um ... hey." Really. Um hey is all you can say? Learn how to talk to girls Ace! "So... were you shouting at me? Do you need something from me? I mean not something from me, but like- ugh! I mean do you need help! ... Sorry."

By the time Lorna caught up the man she was practically out of breath. She slowed her sprint to a halt and bent over, hands on her knees as she panted for air. Why did horses have to move so damn fast?!
She gazed up at the man as he stammered to her. He seemed...oddly nervous, and he had an innocent looking face. Blue eyes to go with that blonde hair, and a lot of colourful and fancy clothing to go with his armor. Was he some sort of spoiled pretty boy, playing at being a warrior? No, she couldn't even say that. Many knights were the sons and daughters of lords as rich as can be. Status had nothing to do with talent, skill, and experience. Anyone could climb to the top and gain power.
"Either way, this rich boy's my only clue as to where I need to go," Lorna thought to herself as she started to catch her breath. She finished sizing her up and sighed mentally, adding a note, "And I suppose he's not bad looking either, so can't fault him for dressing like a peacock,"
When he apologized, though, Lorna blinked and quirked her brow, finally catching her breath, "The hell are you apologizing for? You didn't do anything," She said bluntly before standing upright. Lorna crossed her arms and gave his horse a bit of a glare before continuing, "Anyway, yes you can help me. Saw you looking at that board just now. You headed to that training thing?"
The way he was dressed and his inexperienced look told her "yes", but she figured she'd ask first.
"If you are then mind telling me where the training is being held?" Lorna decided to leave out the fact that she was still learning how to read. She knew there were plenty others like her, but it still wasn't something she was proud to admit.

Oh so she just needed help getting to the special training. Ace just gave up trying to talk to her and smiled. She seemed to have a slight attitude, but Ace can get past that.
"Uh yeah. I'm going to the fort where the training is being held. It's supposedly east of Laus Castle, yet I've never seen it before. To be honest I think there is something fishy going on. Not like your fishy, the fort training thing is. Ugh what am I saying!?" Ace turned away for a second, but then turned back to finish. "Well I guess I could take you ... over to the fort I mean. You could ride with me on my horse, Troy." Troy heard his name and snorted once again. Having her for company could possibly fun. She seemed capable of handling herself.
Ace wondered if she would take up his offer. She seemed to be an independent type of person. However, Ace believed that she did slightly check him out and couldn't help but feel flattered. He did find himself to be an attractive person. Ace often found himself checking on his appearance in any possible mirror. Appearance and first impressions were quite important to Ace.
"Oh and uh ... what's your name by the way? My name is Ace Wilzor, son to Troy Wilzor and Alana Riz-Wilzor. Pleased to make your acquaintance!" Ace smiled as he greeted the girl. He took her hand and gave it a slight kiss to show respect. He noticed that she had nice hands though.

Lorna blinked as the man, whose name was Ace, gave her hand a kiss. He also told her his last name, the names of both of his parents...and the name of his horse. Yeah, he was a rich boy. Only someone well off could be bothered to add their family tree into their introduction.
"Right..." She said, withdrawing her hand after he had kissed it, "The name's Lorna. And if you're offering a ride then...sure, why not?"
Lorna wasn't a big fan of horses but she did know how to ride. Either way it'd be Ace at the reigns so she'd just need to keep herself on the hooved beast. Still, she had more pressing concerns than staying atop of his horse.
"What do you mean by something fishy, then? You think it's some sort of scam?" That...actually hadn't occurred to Lorna. It could be some sort of scam to make some quick gold and run off. She'd heard of cheats and silver-tongued weasels that would pull stunts like that. Hell it could even be bait set out by bandits. Times were tough because of the fiends that crawled out of the ruins of Ostia, even for brigands and highwaymen. And who would guess it was bait, too? Most bandits were illiterate morons and everybody knew it. Their brightest tactic was to hide near a road and...beset a merchant caravan...
Lorna's eyes went cold. Suddenly she found even more incentive to check the place out, and more incentive to put her lance-work to the test.

"I think it's possible that it's a scam. That's why I'm going to make sure." Ace replied to her question. The young man was genuinely surprised that she agreed to come along with him, but he was happy that he wasn't going to the fort alone. If his suspicions were correct then having a companion would prove to be quite useful. He scooted up a bit on top of Troy to allow Lorna more space for a comfortable ride. Ace let Lorna up and soon they were off on their way to the mysterious fort east of Laus Castle.
After traveling for several hours east from Laus Castle. Ace decided that it was a good time to take a break and maybe have some food. All he really had was the bread he acquired earlier from the gentle old baker. Hopefully that would be enough for the two of them. I'll have to do another quick job to get some more food after this, Ace thought to himself.
"I'm going to go get us some water. There is bread in that satchel." Ace pointed to the satchel hanging from Troy's saddle as he jumped off his horse and over to the sound of what seemed like rushing water possibly. Just before he left the little clearing, Ace grabbed a jug connected to the saddle near the satchel and remembered something. "Oh and don't forget to leave me some of that bread!" He joked hoping that it would possibly bring a smile on her face. Lorna had such a serious presence that Ace wasn't completely sure how to take her. Women, Ace thought to himself. The one thing in this land that was just too complicated for him.
He continued towards the sound of running water and found a stream not to far off from the clearing. He scooped up some of the clear blue water with his jug and was about to head back, but then he noticed something in the corner of his eye. He looked out squinting against the sun. It was a fort! That must be the fort that is holding the training. Ace spun around with jug in hand and hurried back to Lorna and his steed.

The journey was, for the most part, rather uneventful. Ace didn't talk to her all that much, which Lorna wasn't sure to be thankful of or annoyed about, and when he did it was just simple nonsense. She supposed it could have been worse, though, and decided to focus on the possibility of this "training" being either a trap or a scam. She was still a relatively new recruit, having only had about a year of training with no real combat experience. Was she actually ready to deal with what awaited her, in that case?
Lorna hoped so. She'd be pissed if she had to rely on Ace to do most of the fighting.
"Hm? Yeah, good idea," She grunted out to him as he walked off to get some water. Her water-skin was empty and she could definitely use a drink. Lorna stretched her arms and grabbed a piece of bread, smirking a little as she took a bite of it. How mad would Ace be if she actually ate the whole thing? Probably a fair bit, but she doubted he'd be able to voice it properly, what with how he had been stammering and apologizing like some beaten child earlier.
Lorna finished her piece of bread and sighed quietly. This wasn't anything sanctioned by her superiors so she doubted she'd even get a pay raise or any real recognition for it: if it was a bandit trap. If it was just a simple scam she could beat the one in charge of it half to death and move on. And if it was the real deal then, hopefully, she'd learn enough to speed up the process of actually becoming a true Lycian soldier. Lorna needed that: to be able to fight and train alongside other skilled knights and further strengthen herself.

A piece of wood cracked as Ace ran over it. He was hurrying to get back to Lorna after he saw a fort, hopefully the one that they were traveling to. Ace could feel himself getting a little excited for what is going to transpire. He hoped that there would actually be special training rather than a trap or something. The young cavalier wondered if should speak to Lorna more on the rest of the way to the fort. Hoping that he wouldn't stutter and talk like a complete idiot, Ace decided to maybe lighten up the mood a bit with the two of them. Ace soon arrived back at the small clearing where Lorna and his steed Troy were waiting.
"Hey Lorna!" He waved at her in an enthusiastic manner. "I think I saw the fort that we are traveling to. We should make it there by tonight." Ace looked up to the sky and saw that it would soon be sunset. Ace gave her the jug full of water and hopped up on Troy. They started to move at a fairly fast pace in hopes of getting to the fort soon. As they resumed their trek towards the fort, Ace decided to try and be more social with Lorna.
"So ... how did you become to live in Laus? What type of weapon do you use?" He quickly glanced at her body rather than her face. "Of course I don't mean like a weapon on your body ... I mean like what physical weapon do you use if any at all? He quickly stammered after his stupid comment. I'm so dumb!

"Ahh, perfect, thanks," Lorna replied, accepting both the water and the good news. At least she wouldn't have to wait too long to see what sort of fate awaited her there. She wanted to say she sincerely hoped it would just be training...but a small part of her hoped it would be bandits. Inexperienced though she may be, the thought of slaughtering a group of highwaymen and cutthroats appealed to her quite a bit.
When Ace finally did speak more to her, it was nothing but nonsense. She stared blankly at him as he clearly eyed her body and completely missed the fact that she was carrying a lance ON her person.
"You're joking, right?" She asked dully before rolling her eyes and sneering at him, "My face is up here, for one," She pointed at her face before continuing, "And my lance is strapped to my back, so it should be pretty damned clear what weapon I use,"
Then it finally hit her. This was a man who must have been isolated from girls growing up. Kept away from them in his little manor or whatever fancy home his parents had. It was the same nervousness a little boy or girl would have when they first started to notice the opposite sex...except he was practically a fully grown man. It was a little pitiful, really...but she could have a bit of fun with it.
"Why do you keep correcting yourself and saying weird things?" She asked bluntly before smirking, "Don't tell me this is the first time you've rode with a girl..it is, isn't it?"

"Don't tell me this is the first time you've rode with a girl..it is, isn't it?"
Oh how embarrassing. She thinks I'm a complete loser now. Ace just cannot seem to win with Lorna or any other girl for that matter. I'm a cool guy. I'm not a loser! He tried to reassure himself, but it wasn't really working.
"Well no... it isn't my first time riding with a girl. The last time I rode with a girl we- lets just not get into the story." Ace said the last part quickly hoping that she didn't ask any questions about it. "But wait there was another time I rode with a girl and she eventually-" Ace stopped as he remembered that he tried to go in for a kiss and the girl he was with slapped him. Hey, she was sending me mixed signals, Ace told himself. "How about we just drop this topic okay? Lets just say I'm not ... smooth with girls." Ace finished hoping that she didn't laugh at him too hard. He blamed his issue with girls on being isolated from them mostly at a young age. He didn't really meet a lot of women until he came to Laus. Anyways, she seemed like the type that would tease him about this forever.
"Well on a different note, how about you? You got any past lovers?" He asked in a teasing way. Maybe she likes to be teased. I guess trial and error could only tell. Just after he asked Lorna about having past lovers, Troy gave another loud snort. Ace looked away from Lorna and saw that the fort was just about an hour away. It was sunset now. Night was coming, which could be scary in the open country Lycia.
"Well we are almost there Lorna! Are you ready for whatever is inside?" Ace called back to her with hopes that she is feeling more brave than he was. He truly hoped that this wasn't all some big trap...

"How about we just drop this topic okay? Lets just say I'm not ... smooth with girls."
Lorna snorted in amusement and grinned at the young man, "Yeah no kidding, you should probably work on that before you get slapped," He definitely got slapped by a girl he flirted with once. She could just tell. Hm, still, these type of guys tended to be rather 'nice', which is what he had been since she met him. So Lorna decided to show a little kindness and not torture him any more on the subject he was clearly embarrassed about.
"Well on a different note, how about you? You got any past lovers?"
At this question Lorna went quiet for a moment. The term 'lover' didn't sit right with her. After all her mother had plenty of 'lovers' that didn't care about Lorna or her mother. Unsavory memories aside Lorna hadn't had any sort of physical contact with a boy beyond fighting them when she was a kid and sparring with them now in the military. So she shook her head before speaking her answer.
"No, I haven't had any 'lovers' or relationships or whatever. Don't really care to have any either. The only partner I need is my lance," Relationships were a luxury, a secondary goal in her mind. She would pay more attention to them after she had gotten stronger. That came first, it had to come first. Lorna would grow stronger, make a better pay, and guarantee a better life and future than she had as a child. Than her mother had. Then she would think about relationships and drinking and bedrooms.
When Lorna looked up she saw that the fort was ahead, and sure enough Ace did as well. When he asked if she was ready her answer came clear as day: yes. Yet for some reason the word got caught in her throat. She balled her hands into tight fists and nodded, forcing herself to say, "Yes, I'm ready."
Damn it...was she scared? She couldn't be scared. Fear would only hinder her progress not advance it. Yet she couldn't shake this pit in her stomach. Lorna didn't know what awaited them, but it made her anxious...and she hated that. She did her absolute best to hide these emotions from Ace. Last thing she needed was him worrying over her or calling her fears out loud. She had to look fearless, she had to BE fearless.

"No, I haven't had any 'lovers' or relationships or whatever. Don't really care to have any either. The only partner I need is my lance,"
Well at least it seems that she was skilled with that lance of hers. She was so adamant about getting stronger that she must be an ambitious soldier. Ambition can be a good quality. However, too much of it can lead to chaos. Hopefully she can balance it well. Ace could tell there was something behind her answer on the lovers question. Maybe he brought up some bad memories, but if she said that she's never been in a relationship then Ace trusted her. He had a certain respect for her even though they just met. They were both aspiring warriors that had a similar goal, to get stronger for an even larger goal.
"Yes, I'm ready."
Hearing Lorna say that she was ready made Ace feel a little better. He felt like together they could take on whatever is inside. He did sort of wish there were more people with them, but the duo will have to do. The entrance to the fort was wide open. Torches were lit outside and inside the fort. They were the only source of light since it was quite dark outside now. Just as they entered the fort, they jumped off Troy and continued to walk slowly through the fort. Suddenly a man came up behind them. He wore dark robes and had a hood covering his face. Ace must have jumped 20 feet in the air when the man appeared and began to talk.
"Well hello kids! Are you here for the super training? Well of course you are! Why else would you be here?" The creepy man tried to smile, but it just made him look even creepier since his smile was all that anyone could see due to his hood. "Well anyways kids. The training is over this way. I'm sure you will become grand warriors in no time..." Ace started to follow the man with his horse's reins in one hand and his other hand close to his iron sword. He leaned in next to Lorna's ear so that he could whisper to her without having the creepy man hear.
"So this seems to just get more shady by the second. Be prepared for anything Lorna." Ace looked at her with a worried look. He didn't want her to get hurt, so he decided that he would defend her with his life...

Lorna's instincts were practically screaming at her the moment she laid eyes on the fort. This was undoubtedly a trap. It had to be. It wasn't even subtle how unnerving everything was, and the dark robed man that greeted them was the cherry on top of the creepy cake. The way he seemed to appear out of nowhere was just...alarming, and who greeted their guests from behind?! Lorna had nearly turned and gutted the man with her spear, and even as she calmed down that urge never truly went away.
Ace seemed to have the same thoughts as her on the matter. He whispered in her ear and spoke of caution. Yeah, they'd need that to say the least. Though as she looked at him she felt a little bothered. The fact of the matter was she couldn't trust him either. Even if he wasn't some part of this grand scheme, which she highly doubted, for all she knew he was just some rich craven. The moment the situation turned sour he might tear off for his horse and ride as fast as he could back to his manor...or whatever fancy home he came from.
But she couldn't assume that. Lorna had to assume that, regardless, he'd stand and fight with her. It was that need that pissed her off even more than her fear did. This whole situation was grating on her nerves...but she couldn't show it.
Lorna took a breath and nodded, shooting the dark robed man a look. It was time to ask questions.
"Has anyone else arrived for this 'super training'?" She started, her balled fists tightening even more, "For that matter, who the hell are you? What credentials do you and your colleagues have to be training us? Are you 'grand warriors' as well?"
The latter was a veiled question with the intent of deciphering if there were others. The answer was a bit obvious in Lorna's mind, but facts had value over fears and negative assumptions. If she knew there were others here then she would be better prepared for them if and when they struck.

"Has anyone else arrived for this 'super training'?" She started, her balled fists tightening even more, "For that matter, who the hell are you? What credentials do you and your colleagues have to be training us? Are you 'grand warriors' as well?"
Ace was shocked, but grateful that Lorna just directly asked the man some questions. It was definitely time to get some answers. The cavalier anticipated for what the man in dark robes was soon to say.
"Uh, huh? Don't worry little girl, I am quite qualified to train you and your friend." Ace could tell the man was starting to be more cautious with what he chose to say. Ace's suspicions only continue to grow. "Besides, don't you just want the training? I'm sure both of you have big dreams." That was it. Ace knew this was a trick. This man was a fraud and Ace knew to be on high alert. His left hand was basically holding the hilt of his sword. Troy could sense Ace's uneasiness and started to get nervous. Ace looked over to Lorna, who was clearly thinking what he was thinking. The man moved his head to apparently look at both of the young warriors, but it was hard to tell with his hood. "Kids like you shouldn't be too bright you know. Too much intelligence can get you in trouble!" The man shouted at us. Ace suddenly was a bit intimidated by the man. "Get them!"
All of a sudden five men with axes came from the shadows next to the chamber that they were in. One charged Ace and Lorna, but Ace drew his sword quickly since he was anticipating danger. The axeman brought down his axe with a vertical swing. Ace threw up his sword horizontally and blocked the axe. They struggled but Ace managed to throw off the axeman's attack and while he was stumbling backwards, Ace thrust his sword towards the axeman's stomach. He made contact and felt his sword go inside the man's stomach. As the man fell to the ground trying to keep blood from pouring out of his new wound, Ace pulled his sword out of the axeman's stomach and turned around to see if Lorna was okay. However, another axeman charged him and swung his axe vertically. Ace ducked down from the axe just barely enough so that he could feel his hair swoosh from the force of the swing. Quickly, Ace vertically slashed at the axeman's left leg. The axeman tried to jump back, but Ace's sword just caught his left leg. The axeman stumbled backwards and fell to the ground like the first axeman, but this wound wasn't fatal.
"Ugh! Useless minions! I'll finish them." The dark robed man brought out a tome. Suddenly he chanted a few words and darkness started to appear. It was Flux, a dark tome. The dark magic was aimed towards Ace. Suddenly, Ace could feel his soul being weakened. His horse Troy was trying to find Ace in the combat so that he may be of use. However, Ace was on the other side of the chamber. The dark man's magic made Ace quite weak and rendered him almost unable to battle anymore. "Take him to where we keep the others. I'll handle the girl!" The shaman shouted to his minions. One of the axeman came over and picked Ace up and started to drag him away.
"Lo-Lorna! Get out o-of here! Take Tr-Troy and r-run!"Ace weakly shouted to Lorna in hopes that she would get out of this safely. There were still two axemen left along with the shaman. Ace also hoped that his horse would not get harmed in any way from this fight...
