Cen had been raised to be a trusting man in his youth. He was taught by his parents to always be honest or to simply hide himself, and when one hid himself it was only to protect your opinion of one in a higher station. As a boy he'd thought that if everyone was honest, there would be no reason to distrust someone. However, the lime haired man wasn't long in this world before he began to understood that dishonesty was far more common than the truth. He still didn't like not trusting people, and the way he figured it, if you never trusted people you gave them no reason to tell you the truth. Still he needed to stay on his toes, he needed to stay alive. The easiest way to manage that was to not reveal every single piece of sensitive information he had in his skull.
"What a coincidence." Cen looked to Gaius. He didn't sound quite suspicious, but his voice was lacking in the 'cheery fool' aspect he'd beem giving himself earlier. Then Cen looked at Garnet. Trusting him with any more information may have been a bad idea, but he hadn't seen the owner, a few men of suspect seemed to antagonize this man, and the man deciding to 'Get out of Worde' made sense. Well, maybe he was a bit of a cheery fool. "Some sensitive plans were stolen from castle Araphen, probably by Etrurian agents. Anyone who brings the plan back'll get a fourth their weight in gold. So you can imagine the competion fer findin' it's a bit fierce. The agents likely hyered a bunch of Mercenaries to cover their escape, and the info I was given said the men hired liked to rest here between jobs. So here Ah am, and" he grinned at Gaius, "Here we are." Playing a fool had gotten him out of a few situations before, and perhaps it could keep him safe here.
"We're lookin' for the plans, he probably knows where they're headed. Other Trackers want him, and the pepole with the plans don't want us to find 'im."

Gaius was a bit relieved that Cen had decided to be the one to explain things and a good job the man did as well. What he had said pretty much summed everything up in a pretty nice way, better than what Gaius though he would do. Though the explanation did bring something to light. They weren't the only ones hired for this mission and Gaius knew that they were going to have to deal with others eventually if they didn't get a move on. Seemed like they were going to be in for a long trip having to deal with all these obstacles and unknowns.
"That pretty much sums everything up," Gaius would say as he looked back to the tavern. "If those agents did hire mercenaries and we have to also worry about others trying to get the plans," Gaius began as he would then turn back to the other two. "It's probably going to be a bloody mess trying to get those plans," Honestly if you told Gaius this mission would end up in a huge blood fight he'd probably say no thanks but he was already this far he might as well see it through to the end.
"If it looked like he was leaving and leaving with company no less than hopefully he's not too far ahead of us and his friends seem friendlier than those guys back in the inn," Gaius doubted things would go as easily as them catching up to the guy and asking nicely for the plans. The only thing they really needed to know now was which direction the guy was headed and how long as he been gone for. Perhaps Gaius and Phantom could catch up in the air but there would be no point if they were hours ahead of them.

"Etrurians! Pah!" Garnet spat to the side as he stood up and paced a few steps away angrily. That brought a rise out of him. Talk of his homeland always did. First it had fallen to a madman's sway. He could understand that for a time, since the Prophet's message sounded good until you saw how it was enacted. But now they'd stayed under his rule for how long? Had it been a decade yet? More? It was hard not to hate his people for that. It was hard not to hate his former rulers, and the people of the towns and villages. Elimine... he hated himself for being unable to stop it. They were all blinded and crippled by events in Etruria.
"I had wanted to ask you for a chance to come along and leave this place behind, but if those men were agents of Etruria's Prophet, then nothin you can say will keep my blade from their throats!" Fury ranged up and down his tones, and he caught it in himself after he finished. In his fervor, some of his etrurian sound came back to his words as he spoke, coloring in an accent that he'd tried to dull over the years on the run.
"If we can find the plans, then the two of you can have them to do with as you please. But let me come with you. I have a score that needs settling with anything involved with the Inquisitorial Army." There was a fire in his eyes now, raised up from the ashes and embers that had been there before. It was a cycle with Garnet, and had been ever since he'd been forced to flee his home. Fiery indignant rage at his enemies for a time, but inevitably he would always drop down into cold torpor, occasionally with the influence of looking for something else to fill the old void in him. Eventually, the fire would start up again though. He wasn't sure which was more broken. The fact that he dropped into misery and despair, or the fact that this cycle continued, despite his attempts to master it.

"If those agents did hire mercenaries and we have to also worry about others trying to get the plans. It's probably going to be a bloody mess trying to get those plans." Cen nodded as Gaius spoke. When he'd been given the job, he'd been told it would mostly be an investigation of sorts, but the Cornwellian did not believe that to be the case. Men had risked their lives to get the plans, which meant that spy or sellsword, their reward would be great if they got their cargo where it needed to be. Cen would not be surprised if he had to pay a heavy price to wrest the plans from them.
Then it was Garnet's turn to speak, and did he speak! He hated the Prophet, which was good to know. Cen honestly assumed that unless someone bragged of how they loved the Prophet and his church they were willing to go to war against Etruria at the drop of a hat. Perhaps that was an incorrect assumption, but here it seemed to be the case. Good. The lime haired rider smiled just a tad as the man finished up his tirade, then cleared his throat.
"Well then, pleasure to have ya aboard. We could set out tomorrow in whichever direction you say the innkeep was headed. Tonight though, I think we should have a chat with some of the men who don't seem to be huge fans of yers-yours Garnet." Cen shoved his fork into his mouth. His food was getting cold, and though he'd been raised not to eat when you were talking about something important, he was starved and you couldn't have good manners if you were a corpse. Maybe that was an exaggeration, but he was hungry, and a stomach that gurgled was one that produced hyperbole.

Etrurians were definitely not popular nowadays. Gaius wasn’t particularly fond of the place either but Garnet’s outburst had him thinking about the nation. Gaius often wondered what sort of madness was going on there and how it was affecting the people. He knew firsthand what it was like living in a country that was broken in more ways than you could count. Due to all the mess that was going on with Etruria Gaius did his best to avoid going there or taking on any jobs that dealt with the place. Last thing he needed was to piss off the Etrurians.
Garnet seemed to have one hell of a grudge against Etruria’s prophet. So much so that Gaius took mental note not to make this guy angry. He noticed the bit of change in the red haired man’s voice though he didn’t make much of it. It was possible that he was just hearing things so Gaius wasn’t going to think much of it. Just take note and move on to other things. Judging by what he had said Gaius was sure they were going to be in for quite the show whenever they finally met up with these men.
”I’ve got no objections to you coming along, the more the merrier,” Gaius was with Cen, having no problem with Garnet coming along. The blue haired man looked back to the inn has Cen spoke, figuring talking to the men back in there was going to be a pain. It seemed that they were more likely to get into a fight than actually get some answers. ”Don’t think we’ll get much out of them peacefully, didn’t seem like the type to be compliant,” Now Gaius wasn’t against using violence to get what he wanted but he wished for once things could just be settled through a talk. He enjoyed a fight but doubt he’d get a good one and nothing but trouble from these guys.

Garnet nodded his thanks to the two riders, glad that he wasn't going to have to go through a whole explanation and justification of bringing him along. He probably would have asked for one, all those years ago. Sometimes being sworn to serve and protect left you feeling a little high minded on who you'd bring with you....
"A chat?" Garnet cocked his head and sneered, fires lighting in his heart again. "Well, you two sound almost like you've given up on convincing them without some kind of struggle." He resisted the urge to crack his knuckles. He suspected he'd be doing that on those thugs in the waystation here soon enough.
"It's just as well. I wouldn't put much hope in it though. I think these boys have been spoiling for a fight, and there are more of them than there are of us. They won't be intimidated by us, so if they are in league with your thieves, that leaves force or money. I'm not about to buy out a half dozen thugs, even if I had the coin."
He bit back his initial enthusiasm, holding it in. He would cooperate with these men since they were here to work with. Cooperation meant leashing his fury and drive again. Not something that pleased him now that he felt he had a purpose again, but he was better than simply willfully diving in to start things off.
"How do you two want to play this? I'm sure they're watching us right now." He spoke quietly enough that people inside the inn wouldn't be able to hear him. "The party I saw ride away headed that direction." He pointed up into the hills. If there were watchers, they would have just seem him pointing up the way the innkeep and the fleeing spy thieves had gone. "Only a few ways out of those passes, but we could still manage to learn something from the men here."
He paused, then continued. "I'll bet that we could easily pick a fight with these lads. Or we could see if they decide to try and shut me up later tonight." He thought of his gear locked away up in the room he bartered for here. It had been some time since he'd gotten it out. No one here had even seen him wearing it, as far as he knew. Easier to keep things like that hidden away until he needed them.

Then he threw his head to both sides, with a similar crack sounding with the motions, left then right. With his height, sitting in anything other than a very tall chair should cause him a fair bit of pain, he always felt like he had to fold in on himself.
He spoke, keeping his voice light, with the cogs in his mind turning to attempt to conjure up a plan. He kept himself quiet so that only the three could hear him. "Gaius and ah arrived at near the same time. We could make it an act that we came here already havin' decided to work together. We could go inside and act lahke you hadn't been any help and try to talk to them. They probably won't give us much, but we can try to figure out where they stand with the inn keep. While we do that, Garnet, you can make sure to prepare for the shutting up, and if you think you can do it quick enough, you could back us up in case things get hairy." Cen put his hand on his hips and bent to both sides to pull on his back a bit more.
He looked at Gaius, "Ah, can play the fool. My voice usually convinces people of that anyway. If that sounds alright with y'all we can head in right now."

Gaius could only shrug at Garnet’s comment about him and Cen sounding like they had given up on convincing them without a struggle. The rider honestly didn’t think it could go any other way with those men. Unfortunate and maybe assuming things will go worst case scenario? Yes. But otherwise what was most likely going to happen seeing how the last interaction with these men went? Well Gaius was pretty sure that was how things were going to go down. Garnet was right on the money with the second part that he had said. Those men were looking for any excuse for a fight, and if anything they wanted to fight Garnet.
The numbers wasn’t something that Gaius wasn’t initially worried about but that was more due to his own confidence in his abilities than anything. And with the addition of Cen and Garnet, both whom Gaius was sure could handle their own in a fight, made the man feel like there wouldn’t be that much of a struggle even with their higher numbers. He did wonder how much anyone inside the inn had heard so far. Doubt that it would matter much but still he was curious. Those men could be waiting to spring something on them when they came back.
There was no way they were dumb enough to make a scene like this in the inn would they? It was possible but it seemed like they wanted to play it safe as they could have already sprung something on them by now. Perhaps they would only move once they were for sure that we were going to follow after the thieves or we got any information from Garnet that would cause them trouble. Which they did but those guys in the inn didn’t need to know anything about what they had learned.
Smart idea on Cen’s part, Gaius of course had no complaints with it. ”Sounds good to me,” Gaius would reply, having no objections to the plan. ”Hopefully things go quickly and we don’t lose any more ground,” at some point those men who had left would have to make a stop eventually and with that the trio had more time to catch up to them. Of course this was all assuming they weren’t too far to begin with that is. Gaius was positive that they would eventually catch up and get what they were after.

Garnet watched the lime haired rider stand up and unfold, joints cracking unavoidably as he stretched. He looked used to it, but as Cen stood up, it became apparent just how much of a height difference there was between the man and..., well, anyone here. He had at least a half a head on Garnet. Huh... It's always the biggest ones that seem the most polite.
"All right then." Garnet put his hands on his hips as he looked between his two new allies. "I'll head in and go gather up my things. Just do me a favor. When we start this thing, would you toss it outside? I have no special bond with the people here, but the staff around the inn has treated me well at the least." That was about all that he could ask for. He was expecting trouble, but hopefully, it wouldn't extend to those not looking for it.
Garnet headed inside, a few of the unfriendlies giving him predatory looks as he headed for the steps. He returned his own dirty look towards them as he headed up the stairs, unwilling to show them intimidation. He was going for his gear. His weapons and armor. They wouldn't know what to expect from him unless some of the staff around the little waystation here had done some snooping for them. Even then, he doubted that they would know what to expect. Truth be told, he didn't know what his reputation was or had been these days. He just knew that he'd taken worse beatings than a simple thug could dish out, and turned them back on their inflictors before. He shook his head as he walked to his room, footsteps thumping on the floor.

The red haired bearded fellow made his way inside to head upstairs, and Cen waited just a moment as he went. Then, just before he was out of sight, the Cornwellian called after him, "Lotta help you were! You're lucky we don't break your fingers!" The tall man crossed his arms over his chest and turned to Gaius and still speaking at an unnaturally loud volume, at the hope that the men inside would over hear him said, "I don't know anything about an owner, my ass." Then he motioned for the other rider to follow him inside through the same kitchen exit he'd come outside through. As he hit the threshold, he tapped the doorframe with his knuckles twice, and all sitting around in the room inside turned and looked at him, the young man whose tall frame with broad shoulders filled the door.
Then, with a swagger to his step that implied a foolish overconfidence in himself, the lime haired youth strutted over to the table where at the men who'd had words with Garnet earlier. With his foot, he dragged the chair out from under the table, and plopped himself down in it. He let a light smile alight his face, "Howdy." The man eyed both of his companions before he said, "Hello." Cen looked at Gaius, then back at the man, "Mah companion and I are looking for a bit of what appears to be sensitive information. If you wouldn't mind, we'd really appreciate it if you could tell us where the owner of this inn headed a few days back. Whatever you know'd be helpful, a destination, or a direction." The man laughed, and after a moment his friends joined him, then the man snorted and said, "What makes you think I'd have this 'sensitive' information?"
The rider grinned like he though everyone in the room was his close friend and said, "Why, the way you reacted to that fella frum before! He really seemed ta rile ya up when he mentioned he wasn't huntin'. And let me tell you, he wan'nt no help at all, so why don't you tell me what it was he didn't wanta tell me?" One of the man's companions laughed, and looked up at Gaius, "Do you speak something we can understand? Or do you come from whatever piss backwards place he comes from?" Cen was presented with two options, stand up and punch the man, using his real voice to tell him a few explatives; or he could dive deeper into his fool role. "Well, I don't piss backwards, I go as straight as you!" He longed for the former, but took the latter. All three men howled with laughter, loud enough for someone at the other end of the inn to hear them.

Gaius followed alongside Cen, curious as to how all this was going to play out. Cen was taking the role of a fool, Gaius curious as to how that was going to be, and Gaius assumed he’d play the straight man role. Easy enough, and the rider was pretty confident that they’d be able to not only pull their roles off pretty well but get what they were looking for. As long as no one caught wise to the little game that they were playing. It didn’t seem like the bunch they were trying to game were the brightest bunch however.
At some point during Cen’s commotion Gaius had swiped himself a drink. So this was the way that Cen was going to do things huh? Loud and bold? It was an interesting decision on Cen’s part and one that was definitely grabbing the attention of everyone in the room. The Bern rider took a sip of his pilfered drink as they made their way toward the men who had issues with Garnet. Of course Gaius remained quiet as Cen did the initial talking, sitting quietly at the table surprised as to how easy the men were believing Cen’s act. The voice probably did help quite a bit and Gaius wondered how often people assumed things of his green haired friend due to this.
When something was directed at him all Gaius did was shrug a bit and then take a sip of his drink. He smiled a bit at everyone’s reaction to Cen’s words. ”Like my friend was saying we just need a bit of information on the whereabouts of the owner of this inn,” Gaius began taking a sip of his drink between his sentences. ”And it seems like from the way you reacted to that man’s ramblings from earlier you might know something that we don’t. Sadly that guy wasn’t much help,” Hopefully these guys could give them something that could lead to finding this owner faster.

Garnet pushed his door open and moved into his upstairs room to begin gathering up his things. He stopped short suddenly once he made it inside though, and looked up. What he saw shocked, and then infuriated him. Before him, he could see his weapons and armor scattered haphazardly across the small mattress in the corner of the room. Worse, was the way his carry bag had been dumped and his belongings rifled through. He'd stayed here for some time peacefully now, and no one had bothered him in all that time. Someone had thought to do it now though.
A creak of a floorboard from his side sent the red headed mercenary into motion, diving forward and hitting the ground in an awkward roll through the cramped room. He felt the wind of a weapons passage narrowly miss him as he tumbled, and came up, seeing a man recovering from swinging a blade at him and missing. A second man was already stepping in for a finishing strike where the first had failed. They were well trained to kill, and well equipped. Knowing this wouldn't save Garnet from the incoming swing though.
Swiping a basin off of the floor nearby, Garnet whipped it, water and all towards his incoming attacker. The man barely flinched, but he did slow down enough to throw an arm up to deflect the attack, and by then Garnet was already surging up and back to his feet. He hit the man, letting out a roar like an enraged bear, and slammed his attacker against the wall. He barely noticed the blade cutting into his arm as he batted the distracted swordsman's weapon aside. With a crunch, he rammed the man into the wall, before using both arms to haul him off his feet and hurl him out the bedroom window. The unfriendly swordsman hit the what little of the roof was there before rolling off the edge and hitting the ground a story below with a sickening thud.
The remaining enemy looked a little taken aback at how quickly his friend's fate had found him. And also like he was beginning to question his decisions in coming here.
"Attack me in my own room, will you?!" Garnet roared the challenge. If there was any doubt about whether the fires of life were relighting in Etrurian Guardsman's heart before, those doubts were laid to rest now, as he fixed his glare on the man that had attacked him a moment before. He stood, barefisted as he surveyed the swordsman and decided that death by a blade would be too good for this one. "Shouldn't have missed the first time!" He stepped after the man as the merc darted out the door, thinking safety was in numbers. Garnet darted after him, and while his antagonist ran down the stairs as fast as his legs could carry him, Garnet bypassed the stairs altogether, and jumped down, heedless of the injury he might sustain. The redhead felt the ground jolt painfully as he leapt down the flight of stairs, but he felt the satisfying crunch as he slammed the fleeing swordsman into the wall at the bottom of the stairs. Garnet's pain was likely nothing compared to the crippling impact that the blow would have on the man he'd targeted.
Grabbing the sword from our of the hand of the man he'd plastered into the wall, Garnet turned his eyes back towards the rest of the common room, suddenly mindful that there were others present in the place.

The lime haired Lycian waited for the laughter to die and for Gaius to give the men his answer. Gaius was rather smooth, he made it seem like Cen was likely the loud fool and he was a quieter, calmer, smarter man who was perchance the more dangerous. Cen considered the way the Wyvern Handler had moved when they'd been walking to their seats, and decided that was probably the case. In fact of the three would be Trackers, Cen was likely the weakest by a wide margin. Hopefully if things went south the margin wasn't as wide between him and these toughs. Still, the young man was more hopeful it wouldn't turn sour.
The man who'd mostly spoken to Cen addressed Gaius after their laughter was silenced, and said, "He's not gonna be much help, Red that is. Owner and him didn't get along, seems to think the owner's up to somethin'." The second man spoke then, and said more to both trackers, "Aye, and that's just plain dumb. Owner's too daft to be doing anythin' malicious outta here. The man's hunting for true." As the men spoke, the lime haired rider's face didn't change much. He looked as if he was happy to hear what the men were selling, and that he was buying it. Cen could feel the dishonesty on the men's tongues however, and came to trust Garnet's word even more. The charade would continue though, as long as it took to get the men comfortable enough to let something slip. Something, anything he could use.
"You fellas happen to be friends with the owner?" There was a cough from the man who appeared to be the leader of the three men, who then said, "Maybe." Before the man could continue, there came a roar from somewhere above the room. In a matter of moments, as all heads turned to attempt and find the noise, there were cries and grunts, and what sounded like a great commotion from what sounded like it must be the stairs in the common room. The three men sitting across from Gaius and Cen in the kitchen seemed too prepared for the noise, and the second man to have spoken was almost immediately out of his chair. The lime haired rider saw it, what looked like a flash of iron as the man moved. A dagger. Cen shot out of his seat and turned, gripping the chair in both hands. He spun like a blur, and cracked the man against his back and neck, the tough being caught in his surprise and going to the floor. "Gaius, go loud!"

Gaius would take a sip of his drink as he listened to the group of men sitting on the other side of the table speak. Their obvious lies made Gaius want to roll his eyes at them but he contained his emotions and kept playing it straight. These men weren’t that great at the deception game and make for terrible cohorts. He hoped the men chasing after the owner were more skilled professional than these fools. If they were getting paid for this whoever hired them was surely not getting their money’s worth. Maybe the options weren’t that great for accomplices.
Maybe? Well that wasn’t that clear at all and before the man could continue there would be a loud noise that had grabbed the attention of everyone in the room. While it seemed like most people were like deer in the headlights Gaius remained calm, finishing the last bit of his drink. He figured that everything had hit the fan once those noises had started. From how dead quiet it got there was a split second that Gaius felt so much tension that one could cut it with a knife. What happened next was expected in hindsight but Gaius didn’t think they were bold enough to actually do something.
It seemed their friends decided to throw all caution to the wind and attack Gaius and the lime haired rider next to him. Cen’s warning did not fall on deaf ears as Gaius was prepared when the next attacker decided to make their move. This man also decided to attack with a dagger, an easy weapon to conceal and carry about so it wasn’t a surprise to Gaius when he saw the man pull one out. The wyvern rider quickly hoped from his chair, moving to the side to avoid the attack.
Using this as an opening the man took his empty glass and smashed it hard against the head of his attacker, causing the man to drop to the ground. Gaius would have to pay for a new glass and apologize for making a mess later. He didn’t enjoy making a mess out of someone else’s place of work but they were bringing the fight to them and they would have to deal with the consequences. The noises from earlier must have been Garnet. Whatever was going on it was best that they went and checked. ”Go check on that noise I can deal with these morons,” At this point there was only one man left but Gaius had an idea of what to do with these guys once they regained composure.

The scene was set from the moment the battle started upstairs. In truth, it had been set since he'd linked up with these mercs. Looking back at the situation, they were all now after the same plans. The only thing they all agreed on for sure was that they didn't want the Etrurians to get these plans. That looked to be right where they were heading, so the less time they spent boxing these louts up here, the sooner they could get on the road to progress.
The others didn't seem to be having too much trouble. The unfriendlies weren't as professional as they would have liked to believe, and when confronted by the real thing, the rough exterior illusion they carried crumbled into dust. These were nothings and nobodies. useful for intimidation efforts and fodder. These weren't what they were hunting. What he was hunting.... It felt good to be doing something again.
"No need. I'm right here. Gave one of em a one way trip out the window, and the other got intimate with the wall over there." The red haired man groused out, unhappy that he'd been double teamed so effectively earlier. Despite that, it hadn't turned out well for them. He tossed a thumb back to where he'd come careening down the stairs and crushed the ruffian into the wall before as he stepped to the side to cut the way into the kitchens and an avenue of escape for the last man standing.
"Look, you clod-hopping dung beetle!" The red haired swordsman narrowed his eyes and gave a fiery glare to the lone defiant figure still standing in the center of the tavern. Garnet stood without arms or armor, fists balled at his sides and held the ruffian's gaze with a sneer that dared him to look away. "We can do this the easy way, or we can do this the painful way and I can promise you that the latter will be very very hard on you." As he spoke, he stepped a few more steps around the side as he stood in the path to the kitchen, forcing a choice. Watch Garnet, watch Gaius, or watch Cen. Depending on how the others moved, he may be unable to keep them all in view.
