“Grand Khan.. I've.. been told that parents want what's best for their children. Parents who praise thair children for doing good and doing what is right. These things.. could be simple.. things.. like chores.. or big things.. like catching large game. And.. while it.. is currently impossible for me to know who.. or what your parents were like... I.. hope.. wherever your parents are.. they are proud and happy for you. For you.. and your accomplishments.. you have done something wonderful. And.. if they aren't.. well at least I am.” A clash of emotions rammed against Selibas' mind and heart. Her words warmed him under every inch of his skin, but he felt the color leave his face. His mother had no clue of the type of man that he was. His father, well, his father couldn't be proud of anyone, much less him.
“I mean.. the Chaklai are proud. And the tribes who are here.. those who have pledged to you.” Oh. The warmth left Selibas then. When Midori explained how to work the brush, Selibas nodded with a slight smile, and took the brush gingerly from her hand. The short khan began to work the brush over the horse's hides in the way she had showed him, and hummed a song the woman had used to sing while they worked in the camp when he had been a boy. Had he known the words, he would have sung them, but he could only recall the tune. After working for some time, Selibas realized he had lost track of time.
Lowering the brush, Selibas turned away from the horse and set it on the stool. He didn't want to leave, but his duty was too fragile to leave lying around for too long. Slowly, he forced himself to walk so that he stood on the other side of Cinnamon. The Little Wolf cleared his throat, "Midori."
He took a moment to compose himself, his chest low and his eyes cast on the floor. You are not a stammering fourteen year old anymore, Selibas thought, you are a man and you are a Khan. You must remember that now. Selibas straightened his back, and held his head higher, so that he could look her in the eye. He placed his left hand on Curtana's hilt so that it rested lazily.
"Midori, I'm sorry but I have to cut my time helping you short. I have places I must see and people I must speak to, but..." He trailed off before reminding himself that he must keep his pride close to his chest. "You are the person I believe I will be most happy to have spoken to. Midori, you are incredibly kind, and before I looked into your eyes I may as well have been blind, for I did not know beauty before I looked at you." Selibas stood then, looking at her for only a moment, then he spun on his heel and left the tent. His heart beat like a rabbit fleeing a lion, but he felt as if he'd just conquered the world.
