Name: Zamka
Class: Taguel-Cat
Age: 36
Born in: Vinland
Appearance: Zamka's human form is that of a tall man, standing at about 6'5, and is built with strong and heavy muscle. A fair bit of his dusky skin is scarred from his years of combat and hunting, and his eyes are a piercing gold, and noticeably cat-like even in his human form. His silvery-white hair is medium-long at the moment, and though he does attempt to keep it at such a length it grows back quite rapidly, resembling a mane. White facial hair has begun to grow as well, though he's also fairly adamant at keeping it trimmed or shaved as well. He bears a deep green tattoo on his chest, applied when he first declared his tribe the Unaragga.
Zamka wears apparel to suit the environment and weather, though he does prefer very light apparel. Small vests or nothing at all on his torso, with pants made of leathers and furs skinned from animals he had hunted himself. Zamka also wears a necklace with a variety of fangs and feathers on it, each one taken from a worthy Taguel enemy. So far he has four fangs and three feathers. He has also always had variations of armour on his human form, even back from his tribal days, currently possessing silver steel gauntlets.
Zamka's transformed state is that of a large white lion
Personality: Zamka is a cunning, relatively young Taguel. He was forced to mature at an early age, just like many Taguel and yet perhaps even more so than most, and as such has already become relatively resourceful. He can be diplomatic and forceful when need be but still struggles on balancing both in proper measure. Priding himself on his hunting and fighting abilities, though admitting he could use improvement in both, one area in particular Zamka is focused on is learning how to properly lead. Not just command in battle but to lead a tribe in all aspects of life on Vinland.
In terms of his own emotional state, Zamka can be described as a reserved individual, but a proper summary would not necessarily have that as his defining or primary trait. Just his most obvious one. Very tough to read on a first encounter, for most anyway. He is constantly weighing everything against a deep set internal value system, a system that he keeps primarily to himself, and a result can need a moment to introspect before responding in a conversation. That said Zamka, beneath his roars and prides, is a kind soul and even noble soul, when one does get to know him. For all his bravery he is not without fear, yet he acts swiftly to most standard troubling situations, regardless of the emotions within.
Zamka suffers from a near constant internal conflict, however, that he describes as being between his honour and pride. His honour being a system both beaten into him at a young age and developed throughout life, what Zamka's honour could very well be different from most. Closer to raw pragmatism, Zamka considers survival and might honourable and respectful traits that he desires for himself and admires in other Taguel. For such a volatile species growing in a harsh and divisive society, Zamka deems it only natural that there is no higher honour than owning the “survival of the fittest” mindset for himself. However this is not an ideology that was he born with, simply one he was forced to adapt, and as a result it directly conflicts with an older ideal Zamka has carried since birth.
Despite living his own life according to the rules of “survival of the fittest”, Zamka's pride demands that he assist those in need. The lost or abandoned. The wounded or sick. Weaker Taguel being outright abused by the strong. To be made prey is one thing. To fall in combat another. But to be made a mere tool for those more mighty than you in particular rings true with Zamka, and he will gladly step up to challenge the mighty who enforce such a way of life. As such Zamka can struggle with certain decisions, as abandoning the sick or wounded or outright using them to preserve the able and strong is considered wise and tactical by many Taguel, himself included.
Story: In the Wit tribe, there is only one male actually born of the tribe that is allowed to stay in the tribe after adulthood. This male is the leader of the tribe, and he monopolizes a harem of female mates. All sons of the leader are sent away in adolescence, that they may either return and take the Wit tribe for themselves, begin tribes of their own, or fall victim to survival of the fittest. The daughters, however, are often exchanged for females from other tribes that follow similar rules and laws, keeping the tribe's bloodline fresh.
Zamka was born to the “Wit” tribe, a tribe primarily consisting of Cat Taguel. He was one of many children born to the leader of the Wit, a male Cat with heavy lion characteristics, and physically Zamka took heavily after him. His father was Rashar Wit, and his mother was Rashar's proper mate Levira, the first mate that Rashar took before forming his harem.
Though Zamka resembled his father physically he was rather different as a child. Zamka took to learning how to hunt and battle well enough, not greatly outdoing his various siblings but faring better than most. In terms of mentality for the tribe's rules, however, Zamka never did enjoy it. His father spent so much time with so many different mates and siblings, Zamka never felt especially close to him. Any other males in the tribe, though, were simply refugees from tribes that had been destroyed or captives from skirmishes or battles with other tribes. Yet Zamka felt for them, and while Rashar treated them little better than slaves, Zamka treated them as friends.
Rashar was not impressed with this and did his best to try and rectify this behavior. He told Zamka that they were simply not strong enough to stay free. Through harsh sparring sessions and hunting lessons Zamka had this logic and enforced upon him, and in time he began to adapt it. There was sense to it, really, and Vinland was too harsh for any other ideology to reign so dominant. Yet even adapting that logic did not destroy Zamka's empathy, but he was force to cease his association with the “lesser Taguel” of the tribe.
In time Zamka reached adolescence and, like his brothers before him and brothers to follow him, he was forced out by Rashar, given half a day to collect anything he needed before Rashar himself would come at Zamka with the intent to kill. Zamka left the tribe aged 15, and spent the next 5 or so years struggling to survive on his own. Unlike many of the Taguel from his home, Zamka decided to learn how to use tools and human weapons in order to gain an edge in survival and battle. Yes he grew to be a large Taguel, but there would always be others larger, stronger or faster than himself.
Zamka eventually began to form his own tribe, recruiting the abandoned or refugee Taguel and settling his own lands. For 20 years the tribe grew and grew, beginning to thrive, and Zamka never once allowed any Taguel into his tribe with the intention of treating them as lesser than others. After all if any Taguel in his tribe were “lesser”, then the tribe as a whole was “lesser” for them. Zamka did take some ideals from tribes like his home “Wit” tribe, namely his harem and sending off his sons. It took a while but Zamka did eventually have four mates, Ellaria, Nymeria, Rhjara, and Junis. With them he had many sons and daughters by the time he was in his 30s.
Eventually, however, an interesting battle came. Zamka soon found his territory being encroached upon by the Wit tribe, now led by one of his brothers. They had returned to the Wit, older and stronger, and defeated Rashar in a one on one duel, thus earning the tribe. However they had soon after been forced out of their lands by another tribe, and had been wandering since. Zamka's territory was bountiful and coveted, yet it was not large enough for both tribes. Either his brother Worick would have to send away many of his tribesmen and be assimilated into Zamka's “Unaragga” tribe, or they would be forced out. Neither option sat well with Worick, and the two tribes soon turned to battle.
The battle, however, was a mutual slaughter. Only Zamka and a few sparse members of both tribes survived, with Worick being the last to fall. All of Zamka's children had been slain, and his mates had died in the battle as well. In turn all of Worick's mates and children had died with him. It was a catastrophe that left Zamka feeling hollow and empty for years, simply walking away from his territory and survivors, throwing the name of his tribe into the wind, for he had failed them.
Zamka spent the next five or six years as a simple hermit, avoiding other tribes and living off the land. Until, one day, a Cat Taguel found him in his isolation. She did not look familiar in the least, but she was young and curious. Zamka wanted to simply hide himself from the youngling, as he did with most who happened upon him, but they seemed lost. Afraid. The lion could empathize with the youngling, so he revealed himself to her. He spoke softly and with a small smile, eventually earning the youngling's trust, before finding out she got separated from her friends whilst at play.
Taguel could be harshly realistic. No doubt the youngling's tribe thought her dead or worse. Zamka, however, offered to escort her back. It took the better part of a day, but in time he managed to escort the youngling to a familiar area. From there she led the way, eventually finding her way back to the tribe. The Cat's family were quite pleased to see her alive, and the rest of the tribe shared their joy and relief. Zamka himself felt a bit of the emptiness that had haunted him be filled.
Perhaps it was not his calling to simply hide away and wait for death, allowing that to atone for his failings. No, he still had a great many years left. He was still in his prime. His thoughts turned to the Thousand Scales, and he could not help but wonder...perhaps he could do more...
