An aggravated sigh escaped Leiva's lips as she sat in the semi-crowded open-air auditorium, her finger tapping out a rhythmless beat on her thigh. She looked about, taking stock of her surroundings; the auditorium smelled of crisp, dehydrated desert grass, which certainly couldn't be counted as a rare scent in Sacae, but it bordered on overpowering. It had been crammed full of more chairs than was probably necessary, considering the relatively small turnout of less than a few dozen people, and it gave the relatively large building the illusion of being emptier than it actually was. Peering over to the front stage of the auditorium and past the tired, grizzled-looking announcer through an open, doorless doorway, she caught sight of a clearly artificial hedge maze made out of what appeared to be dry grass, almost hay. Something in the maze caught the sun and glinted, causing Leiva to rub her eyes and look away, her vision seeking shelter from the brutal sunshine.
Before Leiva could continue looking around, however, the announcer's booming voice rang out and made her jump.
"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages! Step right up, step right up! Who wants to take a turn in the treacherous hedge maze, said to be built by the legendary dragons millenia ago and collect their sacred treasure? I will take one man and one lady from the crowd! Come, come!" he boomed.
Leiva rolled her eyes but stood up and crossed the legions of empty chairs, walking up onto the stage and standing next to the announcer. She eyed him briefly, crossing her arms under her cloak. He looked tired. And bored. She couldn't blame the guy.
"We have our fair lady! Now, would a fine young man care to join her on this expedition?" he called. Leiva scanned the crowd, wondering which poor chump as desperate as her would stand up for a shot at pawning whatever the shiny thing in the maze was.
