"It's a deal then! As my first masterpiece, I shall make a lance capable of piercing the heavens with one mere stab. A pinnacle of taguel engineering that will shake the foundations over blacksmiths all around Elibe I tell you!"
Not able to contain himself, Theodore started to chuckle at his own words. Hey, he may be grandiose, but he could still realise when he sounded eccentric. Though he did enjoy the fact that Adelaide wasn't already in total rage. It was good to talk with someone as cynical as him for a change and also someone who didn't take every last one of his jokes as offenses. Broke from the monotony of it all, actually.
Seeing that the sun which was setting had started to give the forest a colorful tint, Theodore was surprised that he didn't see the time going by so fast. Adelaide seemed to turn towards him before asking if he had anywhere to sleep on this continent. Starting to count on his fingers, Theodore started thinking out loud:
"Well, I slept in a couple different inns... I also received shelter from merchants and blacksmiths that I had helped in exchange for food and roof over my ears. Before I got chased by those god awful poachers, I was staying in a small village which I decided to rest for a day or two. Of course as you can see, that did not end as I planned it to end. So for now I guess I have to find somewhere else to go, going back there would probably mean either finding more of their friends or finding the family of whoever we just killed, the both of which I'd rather want to not deal with at the moment.
But why the question? Would you happen to know a place where this poor bunny could sleep without worrying about more hunters tracking him down?"

Adelaide had to begrudgingly admit that she appreciated and was amused by Theodore's tenacity. He likely had an ego of sorts, but he seemed aware of it. At least he wasn't ashamed to be itself, it seemed. Either way, this quip prompted a grin from Adelaide.
"I'm holding you to it, Fluffy. Make me a lance I'll never forget!" Adelaide guffawed. She let out a small sigh, then glanced up at the sky, her brow creasing a smidgen when she realized how late it was. Already, the sun was beginning its gradual descent into nadir, bathing the forest in a goldish-orange hue. It reminded Adelaide faintly of nectarines.
Theodore sounded discouraged, as he essentially had nowhere else to go. Normally Adelaide would have punched the daylights out of someone if they got this chummy with her, and she certainly didn't enjoy relegating herself to hearing sob stories, much less empathizing with them. But here she was, as cynical as ever, sitting beneath a canopy of trees with a fellow cynic. It was weird how that worked. Eyeing the horizon, Adelaide realized that she probably had to move. Her room at the inn would be given away to someone else if she didn't move fast enough. Sighing, she now had a pressing choice to make. She loathed decisions.
"Right," Adelaide mused finally, holding back some choicer words. "I'm pretty sure the inn I'm staying at has another room. I suppose I ought to take you there, huh? Astoria," she prompted, gently stroking the wyvern's jagged snout, which caused her to open one bleary eye, huff lightly, then open another, slightly perturbed that her nap had been interrupted. "Ever flown before?" Adelaide asked.

Wait she's not even angry?!? Theodore was quite suprised considering the effort he had just put in to try and push her buttons with his not very subtle ply for a place to sleep. An inn would still be better than the woods even if it wasn't too hard for Theo to sleep outside. Hey, his fur gets all extra fuzzy when the night humidity kicks in, what could he say? Adelaide then followed with a proposition that was able to make Theo act like an excited five year old. Clapping his hands in a cheerful manner while gasping with excitement, you could almost see the shimmer in his ruby eyes:
"Hold on, fly on top of a wyvern!?!? YES. SO MUCH YES. I can't believe how much this day went from a zero to a ten so fast! I'm gonna be the first rabbit to touch the clouds! Thank you Adelaide, this is an extremely generous gift you are making." he then bowed to her in a very exagerated manner, removing his hat in the process to let his ears fall down towards the ground. "On a serious note... Ohmygodflyingonawyvernlet'sgo."
Theodore had definitly lost his usual fine speech and let pure childlike excitement take over. Walking over to the wyvern, he slowly reached his hand out like he would do with wild animals back on Vinland. Slowly petting her forehead, he couldn't tell if she was liking it or not... Well, as long as she's not biting...
"Hey you, hope you don't feel too angry you won't be having Rabbit En Civet À La Théodore for tonight... Though tell you what, one of these days I'll catch you a nice fat boar, how does that sound?" he whispered to the wyvern, the same way he did back on Vinland with other animals. He wondered if she would understand what he was saying? Wyverns were a bit far from the animals he spoke with.

"Ease up, there, Fluffy, I'm not looking for compassion here," Adelaide chided lightly. "My guilty conscience would kick in if I didn't help out, or Astoria wouldn't take off. I think she might be nicer than I am. Which is weird considering she hated every other recruit. You don't want to argue with this lummox," she concluded, reveling in her own jabs of humor.
Astoria bowed her neck, enabling Adelaide to mount her. She secured the necessary harnesses on herself, then turned to Theodore, his eyes still roughly the size and shape of ruby dinner plates. It would be a while before they diminished back to there proper size, she imagined. Sighing, Adelaide realized that she only had one set of harnesses - because why would she need another set, anyway? She always rode solo.
"Much as I'm going to hate this part, I'm gonna need to have you hold onto me pretty damn tightly," Adelaide revealed. "I trust you enough, but know that if you in any way try and get fresh with me, the villagers below will be watching Theo's Comet hurdling across the cosmos tonight. Are we clear?"
She assisted Theodore in mounting the wyvern, who growled indifferently at the rabbit's joke. She preferred cattle, particularly full-grown bulls. Pork made her stomach - or stomachs, plural, because wyvern anatomy was confusing and if cows had four stomachs, it stood to reason that wyverns would have about nine with the sheer amount that they ate - upset. Regardless, Adelaide loosed her reins and signaled for her to take off once the scaly beast had traipsed into a wide enough clearing and began to bound, gathering speed.
At once, wings that spanned yards long began to beat against the wind, and soon the ground began to shrink below the duo. Astoria let out a valedictory shriek, then rose ceaselessly into the emerging night.

"Theo's Comet, an event only ever documented in the most secret of monasteries. I it is said that the comet forbodes the arrival of an angry deity and her loyal steed... Considering I wouldn't want to rain down chaos upon the poor masses of Elibe, I'll keep myself from trying any funny business during the flight. I give you my word, taguel's honor."
As he jumped on, he decided to do just as Adelaide reccomended as he scooted over to put his arms around her waist. With no saddle, the wyvern definitly felt "scaly" as he tried to get comfortable the best he could. He also hopped that Adelaide wasn't repressing too much intent of murder despite the way he had to hold on to her. He actually quite liked the conversation they just had so her being angry because of this would simply just not do at all. Right before they took off, Theodore tried to say something:
"So how hard do I really need to hang on? I mean, I find it hard to belie- OH SWEET MERCIFUL EARTH MOTHER, HANGING ON TO DEAR LIFE, UNDERSTOOD."
As they ascended to ludicrous heights, Theodore was definitely grasping Adelaide with all of his might. How could she do this while being so calm!?! Thankfully, Theo finally calmed down a tiny bit when they started maintaining a constant altitude. Looking around, he almost felt as if he was dreaming. His regular sassy attitude was washed off thanks to the sheer beauty and grandiose feeling the view was giving.
"T-this is..." were the only words he could say for a few moments. "I'm speechless. I don't even have one witty comment to make.
Staying silent, the bunny continued to view the world as far as he could, taking it all in. This feeling was the greatest excitement he had ever felt...

Adelaide felt her face flush involuntarily as Theodore clung to her waist. Because she was wearing armor his grip didn't feel like much, but she still felt indignant at the fact that she was doing this to begin with. She could just as easily have left Theo in the woods - he would've been close to home anyway, taking the form of a woodland creature and all - but something pried her away from this notion. If more poachers came, neither her nor Theodore would be in any condition to fight them. Her throbbing right leg reminded her of this; an injury this deep would take weeks to fully heal, and she dreaded the prospect of limping.
As the familiar whooshing of adrenaline associated with bounding upward took hold of Adelaide, Theo's grip became vice-like around her waist. She couldn't look down as she was focusing on guiding the reins, but she imagined that his knuckles were clenched white. She hated the sensation, but at least she wouldn't have to deal with the guilt of having him slide some hundred feet below into an incoherent splatter. Probably.
"Good," Adelaide responded cheekily. "Shutting up means I can focus."
The horizon below began to diminish more and more until Adelaide finally leveled off flight about twenty seconds later. It wouldn't be a long trip to the village she had been staying at, nor would it be particularly arduous. But given the wounds she had been dealt, she felt far more exhausted than usual. Astoria gave a rumbling drawl that reverberated throughout her scaly flesh, which Adelaide felt even though her hands were nowhere on the wyvern's skin. Thus, Theo would be feeling the full effect of the growl.
Below, the forest looked like an immaculate mosaic. Greens interlocking with yellows, low sunlight spilling like milk onto the grass. On clear mornings, Adelaide could see rivulets of dew forming on the grass even from high above, which shimmered broadly. Theodore seemed undaunted by the view, and the fact that it reduced him to silence truly highlighted how significant the view was to him. Unless you were trained to ride a wyvern or pegasus, you were unlikely to experience flight in your lifetime.
"By the way, I don't fly into clouds. Turbulence is a-" Adelaide was cut off by a gust of wind, which didn't rock the wyvern or either of its riders, but muted the next word she said.
Soon, the village and its winking window candle-lights came into view, and Adelaide began to commence a descent.

Theodore only half listened to whatever Adelaide was saying. Right now, he felt like luckiest taguel ever, well not counting bird taguels. But really, having fluffy ears is much better than cumbersome wings, so at least he didn't feel too sad he had been missing out on flying. If only his family could see him now. He could laugh in their face as much as he wanted from the skies and there would be nothing they could do! Coming to Elibe is the best decision I ever took I think... Surprisingly, this almost made up for the fact he had just ruined his new outfit thanks to that javelin back there. Taking a deep breath of the rather cold air thanks to their altitude, he actually felt jealous that Adelaide could do this any time she wanted... God, just the sights alone made him want to paint despite the fact he had never held a paintbrush in his life. (also he only learned what a paintbrush was two days ago...) Hmmm, would he actually be a decent artist? He definitly had inspiration thanks to the landscape he was studying at every moment... Guess learning new crafts would definitly help him become a master artisan... Not only that but art actually held value in this continent to Theo's surprise.
They then started to go down towards the village Adelaide was staying at. This time around, Theo wasn't as scared but he still decided to hold on rather tightly just in case... Wyvern scales were probably a bit slippery so he felt calmer knowing at least he was holding on to her metal plate. He loved to take dives into rivers and such, but this height would absolutely ruin his swimming career, (although it would make for the most grandiose dive in existence... at least for the beginning of it.) When they finally landed. Theo took a moment to realise it was time to get off.
" It definitly feels strange to check an objective i didn't know I had off of my bucket list... God it feels strange to even know I had a bucket list! I can't believe I'm saying this, but this might have actually made me an idealist a tiny bit...Oh wait it's gone. A small grin appeared on his face before Theo started the "sass" back up: "Show me this inn so we may rest and laugh at the destructive and greedy nature of man!"

Astoria landed with a pronounced whump, but nothing that should scare anyone around them. Wyverns and their riders were a common sight throughout Bern, even in its smaller villages and towns. It took a full moment for her to realize that Theodore was still gripping her metal plate armor with fervor that she was a tad uncomfortable with.
"Do ya mind, Fluffy?" she asked incredulously, though with a tone suggestive of amusement rather than indignation. With that, she tethered Astoria snugly to a reinforced post outside the familiar candle-lit windows of the inn. Through them she could see the stone hearth crackling merrily within. She entered with Theodore along in her wake and directed them to an empty table near the hearth.
"Don't know about you, but I could probably eat a full-grown boar at this point. You drink at all in Vinland? Ale, wine, liquor, so on?" Much as she disliked being chummy with people, she refused to pass up a prime opportunity for a good drink. She was going to pace herself anyway since the last time she got drunk, she nearly had her head taken off by a hulking behemoth of a man. A wizened veteran fighter came to fight in her place, but his leg had started acting up, and before she could see the daylights get knocked out of him, she fled with what remaining sobriety her brain still had lurking about.
A tavern maid came by and pointed the the menu inscribed on a tablet bolted to the wall. "What'll it be?" she asked, not noticing the idiosyncrasies regarding Theo's outlandish appearance.
"I'll have a beef stew and an ale," Adelaide decided, then awaited Theo's decision.

" Well actually, fermentation is used by a lot of taguels. It's the best way to store foods for long periods of time after all. Alcohol is not foreign to us because of that, but from my experiences, not many actually seek it out. That of course, excludes myself! I remember spending months trying to figure out how it worked and I think I can fairly say that I can make passable hooch. Though it might not be the same as what you guys have here... I didn't even know there were different kinds of alcoholic beverages until last week..." he said, now thinking about what could be the ways humans made so many different drinks... Ugh, and another subject for him to study and practice. That made two today, normally they only appeared every week.
Looking around the inn, he was happy to see that no poachers were here this time to crash his fun. Though he did keep on his hat, just in case. Maybe, just maybe people weren't as open minded as he thought towards bunny people. Thank god he started shaving himself, otherwise the rings of fur on his wrists and the other couple patches would have definitly made people look at him with a strange expression. Seeing a barmaid arrive to show them the menu, Theodore took a second to look at the meals...
"Not a whole lot of vegetarian meals I take it... Oh! Sorry dear, I'll take the uh... vegetable soup? Yeah, that's fine... Oh, and some... brandy. Let's try that too.
Seeing her walk off after giving a strange look, probably due to his comment about the lack of bunny-friendly meals in this place, Theo turned to Adelaide:
"Tell me how drunk I'm gonna get, I'd prefer to know what kind of trouble I'm getting myself into.

Adelaide let out a half-hearty guffaw.
"Well, brandy will knock you ass-flat if you drink enough of it. I'm more of a whiskey kind of girl, or a rum kind of girl." Ironically, it had been brandy that have gotten her blotto inebriated when she had met Victor in a different tavern a while back. She wondered if it would have the same effect on a taguel, which both mystified and fascinated her.
The waitress soon returned with the first round of drinks - Adelaide's tall flagon of ale and Theo's lesser dram of brandy. A little buzz before the hearty meal arrived. The young wyvern rider had hoped that he was joking about his unfamiliarity regarding alcoholic beverages, but might as well enroll him in the crash course while she still had the chance. Adelaide took a draught of ale and sighed as if taking the first breath out of a coma.
"You know, this stuff used to be safer to drink than water. Of course, the clerics purify water now," Adelaide said. "But water's bland and tasteless!"
It was not long before the entrees arrived, Adelaide's a steaming pot of beef stew and Theo's a generous helping of vegetable soup. The stew was sublime; it was a hothouse of flavor and spices on the tongue. Adelaide had never been to this tavern in her entire life, but she was certain she would return to it. She wondered if Theo had any foods like this in Vinland.

So apparently brandy had a pretty high alcohol content... Interesting! As the drinks arrived, Theo wondered how could his drink be equivalent to the huge mug that Adelaide had just been graced with. Taking the glass in his hand, he swirled the liquor haphazardly around the glass, wondering what could be so great about it. As he took a small whif of the amber liquid, his head reared back for a bit as he said: "Sweet mother... This seems more like it'd be better used as a disinfectant than a drink... Wait, let me take that back." As he went back to smell the drink, delicious aromas started hitting his olfactory nerves which made him go into an analytical frenzy. " Apricots, dried, a hint of ginger even. I can also detect some earthy mushroom somewhere in there that mixes with i can only imagine is the maple wood used for the barrel to age this in so it could reach this complexity of flavor..." Amazed by the drink, Theo went to take a gulp of it. Of course it ended as everybody else looking at him would guess as he sarted coughing up the hard liquor. Realising his mistake, he decided to limit himself to small sips so he could truly enjoy the multiples aromas and tastes dancing on his tongue.
CLosing is eyes for a bit, he deciphered all of the flavors pretty easily before swallowing it and looking towards Adelaide while showing his trademark grin: "Call me the brandy savant."
As the soup arrived, Theodore was happy to see they were also very good cooks on top of being skilled at choosing alcohol. Taking a first sip, he noticed how much more humans were advanced not in just technology, but also small things like cooking, something taguels would deem unecessary when food is simply fuel, well at least in the eyes of taguels whose names were not Theodore.
"I still can't believe you guys can so easily eat such delicacies whenever you want. THe way you guys devellop useless skills like this always makes more intrigued about your society."
Woops, would she take offense to that? Eh, she might as well should get used to how Theo usually is.

Adelaide knew that Theodore was not acquainted with the alcohol of the Elibean mainland. His attempt at being a pseudo-connoisseur aside, she surmised that his accentuated sense of smell and taste compared to humans was probably magnified at least tenfold if not more. Brandy was a fairly sweet spirit, best enjoyed when paired with sweet cream or milk. Adelaide's ale had its usual notes of malt, barley, and hops, though with it being an ale it tended to feature more of the latter.
Oh. Savant. How did I bloody guess? Adelaide asked herself with some twinges of vehemence. She was more focused, however, on Theo's remark about "useless skills".
"Not all of us have to forage constantly, you know," Adelaide mused with some indifference. She was too fixated on how delicious her beef stew was. It lingered on the tongue beautifully on all the right taste buds. Firing back, she added, "Not all of us need to eat rabbit food, either. You need meat if you want energy. That goes double for me."
She could see the writing on the wall now: Theo would probably remark on how heavy she ate, or comment on her physique, both of which would result in the tavern debuting its one-time-only special rabbit a la mode. She didn't mind that she had a voracious appetite or that she ate more than nearly all of the men in her former battalion. It felt right to her, so why not? Besides, she looked damn good underneath it all, she thought. Being a wyvern rider had its perks.
In any event, Adelaide still wondered about Vinland and if food was really scarce there too. Granted, plenty of hamlets and villages and even city-dwellers were starved of food, too, and many more were entirely reliant on the prospect of a good harvest. If the harvest was bad, famine was all but inevitable. Adelaide recalled often her meagerly upbringing as well, in which a meal typically consisted of a small portion of bread or fruit. If she was lucky, sardines or a piece of cheese.

"Oh I didn't mean anything mean when i said "useless skills". I'm actually jealous that I didn't have time to learn as much as I could have because of the fact I needed to find my own food and plenty of other basic needs I had to fulfill. The way you guys divide labor is quite efficient actually. It's just that in taguel society, anything not related to survival is usually considered pointless, so I took the habit of calling hobbies and passtimes useless, despite the fact I do enjoy them."
But really, they are technically useless, so is most things, but let's keep the nihilism out of this joyful evening. I'm actually enjoying myself without needing to belittle somebody else's beliefs. The term "rabbit food" struck deep as Theo made an exagerated gesture as if he had been shot in the heart:
"Please, don't remind me of the fact I can't eat meat... Just the aroma coming off of your plate is making me jealous. I've been given massive claws and razor sharp teeth but the moment I eat the smallest chunk of meat, my body decides to go full defensive. The only thing that I can manage is bugs and such, but I still don't think you guys have done a lot of research about cooking insects sadly, so that's one part of human gastronomy I'll never eat." he chuckled softly, taking a sip of his brandy afterwards. Surprisingly enough, this situation was actually getting to him. Why did his body refuse him from the pleasures he wanted to experience? Theodore only lived to feed his needs, all of them going from hunger to a thirst for knowledge so not being able to experience stewed meat was pretty depressing.
Starting to feel his head getting a bit hotter, he took a moment to realise this is what being "drunk" must be. As he started to relax a bit more thanks to the alcohol, he looked at Adelaide for a bit before asking her something:
"So tell me, why would you need so much meat-fueled energy? What are you doing these days that requires it? he said with a grin. His semi-serious tone was perfectly balanced to let her know he actually was curious and not just making fun of her.

Adelaide tried, in futility, to follow Theodore's logic. Being teetotal for the bulk of his life probably rendered it difficult for him to properly metabolize the alcohol, so him being tipsy even by now was a real possibility. She figured now was as good of a time as any to forge a bold statement and let it free fall from her lips in earnest after swallowing her latest mouthful of stew.
"Don't tell me you taguel are all work and no play!" chided Adelaide teasingly. "Doesn't sound like a very fun society to live in if you don't at least have a couple things to do for fun!"
She hadn't been serious, of course, but she did bear the slightest hint of genuine intrigue when she posed the statement. She wasn't always sure when Theodore was kidding or not. He spoke clearly for someone who was drunk. Adelaide took another draught of ale, fighting back a small belch in the process. How unladylike, though she was one of the last people she ever knew that would even care for such things. A dull warmth was beginning to spread across the expanses of her head, but this was merely the ante-phase to tipsiness rather than full-on inebriation.
"I don't know, to be honest. To me, meat tastes damn good, and it makes me feel like I can strangle a mountain if I couple it with a hearty glass of ale! Kinda like right now, to be frank." She hadn't realized that she had so much energy until now.

"Don't even get me started on that. To them, it's always work and no play. Anything that doesn't help with survival is considered pointless. I'm telling you I don't know what I would've done if I didn't learn about you guys and your culture.
Taking another sip, he started looking around the place, observing everybody. They seemed...happy. Like nothing mattered in the world while they were in this place drinking and enjoying themselves. Theodore could definitly agree with that. For years he hated how his family would never act like anything more than animals surviving, never trying to become something greater or achieving something no other taguel had done. They were stuck in their ways, never wanting to come out of their comfort zone. It was pathetic. SImply going through the motions was no way to live, Theodore always told them that the way they were living was a waste of air to breathe. Huh, maybe that explained a bit why their relation never really improved...
As he heard Adelaide talk about her love for meat, Theodore couldn't help but laugh out loud. "Strangling a mountain? Well that's definitely one I hadn't heard before... Though the way you talk about it really does make it seem like you adore meat. The first time I tried it was when I was bored and I nibbled on some poultry one of my friends had caught back on Vinland... Let's just say that the evening was pretty much ruined after that fateful bite.
And then Theodore had a great idea. Well, "great" was subjective but to the bunny's eyes, he was interested to see what would happen. I mean, can't make an omelette without crackign some eggs, right? Theodore put his elbow on the table, giving Adelaide a challenging look:
"Alright, you know what? Let's see if you really can strangle mountains...
He already knew there'd be high chance for him to lose, he was built to be swift not strong. But at least it'd be interesting to see how'd she take the challenge.
