Althea was taking a walk.
This was generally a bad sign, and today was no different. She much preferred to be indoors working on something. But of late, everything she did tended to end in tragedy, combat, or both. Even the seemingly safe visit to the runestones a few days back had gone... about as well as things ever went for her. So today, in one of the decently sized towns in Khathelet, she was... NOT investigating ancient ruins or dark magics or fighting bandits. Her gear was all back in her room in the inn, that stupid f**k**g grimoire included, and she was now just... walking. Like a normal person. Sunlight streaming down like rays of divine judgement - she didn't think she was a vampire, at least not last time she checked, but she still didn't get on well with the sun. Being that pale kinda had that effect.
In the meantime though, it was just her, herself, and she, taking some time to themselves to enjoy the sights and sounds. Or at least try to. She didn't really... -people- if she could help it. So for the most part Althea had avoided any real interaction in the day and just wandered around observing things.
Yeah, that's real fuckin' exciting
...And Eris was there too.
Needless to say there was little remaining of the good mood she had woken up with, but Althea could deal with an obnoxious teenager, in much the same way that she dealt with everything else she didn't like: ignoring it until it went away. Surprisingly useful strategy really, most people had less patience than her. And honestly, dealing with Eris was a small price to pay for no danger or drama in her today, just some good old fashioned rest and relaxation.
She was also lost, admittedly, but that wasn't a big deal. At least not yet. If she just thought of this as an... adventure, so to speak, it was almost exciting!

Pounding, thump, thump, thump! Constant, rhythmic, rapid and tapping. His heart raced like a rabbit's in his chest and he could feel every beat from his chest to his ears. The fake priest was not strong physically and his endurance suffered for it as well. He could taste the twang of blood in his throat born of breathing from his mouth. He had made it to Lycia and yet still he was hounded by the inquisition for reasons he knew not, or rather did not dare to dwell upon.
"Ya think we'll be forgiven for taking a man of the cloth down?" One of the pursuers asked. He was clearly not exerting himself. Not only did he speak with ease and in a joking manner it was just easier to run the fake priest down.
"Hahah! I don't know! Probably more penances per limb we take! They never said he needed to be in one piece!"
"Maybe we will get more per part, sell it piece by piece for more!" The two laughed wickedly and with mirth. Aura meanwhile ran harder feeling as though his chest would explode under pressure, if not that then it would surely be his legs. Oh how they would ache if not for being numb.
Bursting from the treeline he saw the walls of a town ahead. By the grace of Elimine! he felt overwhelmed with joy at the sight of it. He felt on the verge of tears! There was no possible way the guards would allow such a show from these man hunters!
"Oh no you don't!" One of the two shouted. "Like hell you're getting away!" In an effortless showing the closer of the men leaped atop Aura crushing him under his weight. "Sit still, Brother!" His words were mocking in tone.
"Nice catch!" The other slowed to a walk and laughed.
"Helllllp!" Aura called in desperation before receiving a mind jarring fist across the face. His head shot about slamming into the ground rattling him.
"Shall I cut out his tongue?" The standing one asked drawing a wicked knife. It was old and jagged, rust and wear clear upon it.
"Don't be stupid, you cut out his tongue he can't speak."
Was this how it ends? He came so far! Mira may have given up her life for him and all the others that aided him! Their kindness would be for nothing! He could not allow it! He squirmed and with all the strength he could muster he -got a fist to the face once more, a bloody nose to match his now swelling eye.

Well. Good news and bad news. The bad news was that she was still lost. The good news was that she was... less lost. The vibrant centre of the town had spread into residences that in turn had spread further apart, and now she found herself, er, outside the town, having passed through a small gate.
Good going, girl, you're like a human compass! Please stop talking. I'm thinking to you not talking I WILL find a way to exorcise you. Good luck, I'm behind seven brain cells!
Studiously ignoring her counterpart, Althea took a few moments to think, deciding after a time that she had actually intended to come here, 100% absolutely planned. For some, ah, fresh air and even further peace and quiet. Yes, that seemed reasonable. Which it was. Because that was what she had intended.
So I know you're busy trying to excuse your complete incompetence- I WILL GUT YOU LIKE A FISH! -But something's happening over there.
Eh? Partially distracted from discussions of her fraying sanity and unending desire to fillet Eris, Althea stared around blankly for a moment before realizing that a small group of people seemed to be doing... something... closer to the tree line further outside of town. It was close enough that she could tell they seemed to be having some kind of disagreement, but far enough she couldn't quite make it out. Should she leave them to it? Hmm... perhaps it would distract Eris for a time. And if something was wrong, she should at least investigate.
What happened to taking the day off? Shush, you.
While she was neither the fastest nor the fittest of women, it didn't take long for her to close in on the group, realizing quite rapidly as she approached that something was most definitely wrong. Without any knowledge of who they were or what their mission was, the shaman had no way of knowing if it was a clear cut case of good and evil or a more complex question of morality, but given that it appeared to be two armed men ganging up on an unarmed(?) one, it didn't take a genius to realize that SOMETHING bad was happening. Even if she was one.
"-And what is happening here," she queried in a clarion call, the frail looking mage's voice sharper and better projected than usual. Though one of the words came out sounding slightly different than she had thought it would for some reason. Almost as if it wasn't her own voice. How odd. It was almost enough to distract her from the situation at hand... almost.

Aura futilely struggled against the stronger man as a rag was shoved into his mouth to keep him quiet. His cries were turned to little more than high pitched screeching that was muffled and hurting his throat further. By Elimine! She was a cruel mistress to have put the gates of salvation so close before his eyes, to gaze upon paradise before the devils of below swept upon him to drag him into the fires his soul so clearly deserved. But then, could it be?
"And what is happening here?" an unknown voice called out. Could it be an angel of Elimine come to intervene? Proof that even his most damned soul was not beyond redemption? Alright, enough of the dramatics but who was this woman? And, he was far from complaining but this intervention must have been a greater power at work.
"Looky here missy!" The one pinning down Aura began, pointing a knife in her general direction. "This has less than nothin to do with ya, so just turn around and walk away? Okay?" He figured his threat would be more than enough to send her running and tossed a bound Aura over his shoulder like a rag doll. "This is... this is all just some business you understand?"
The other hunter stood to the side waiting patiently but ever eyeing the odd woman. Anyone could tell there was a scuffle going on here and they would run and hide or get guards but she came to them, unarmed. "Listen, mage, we aren't looking for trouble with you so... please." He was oddly cordial about it, or as much as his unsophisticated manner allowed.
Aura however writhed his body making him hard to carry and looked back at the newcomer with pleading eyes, and more muffling screeching. Its like he is trying to say something but sounds more like a tantrum child. If only he had learned the purging arts instead of healing!

Wow, that's kinda cliche, OBVIOUSLY bad guys. Wanna just blow 'em up?
Ignoring the voices in her head, slowly becoming more and more convinced that she actually was going crazy, Althea took in the varied responses to her query in stride, realizing a little late that she probably should have thought to call the guards, but at this point it was far too late to do so. Turning her back to them would invite an unexpected strike, and the time needed to gather guards even if they DID allow her to leave unmolested would ensure that they had plenty of time to escape. And while the guards were bound to keep the peace within the town, it was... unlikely that they would be especially interested in charging out into the wilderness on a single traveler's words, searching foes who might or might not exist, based on a kidnapping that might or might not have happened.
"You're right about one thing," the shaman stated neutrally, her eyes narrowing. This was a really, really, REALLY stupid idea. Since when was she supposed to be a hero? The her of even a month ago would happily have retreated and called the guards - or more likely have called them in the first place without ever venturing forth into danger. Instead... here she was, standing here unarmored and seemingly unarmed, putting herself in harm's way for absolutely no potential personal gain whatsoever. Not even in the pursuit of knowledge. Stupid, stupid, stupid! She was more frustrated at herself than any of these idiots, the bound and gagged doofus included, but it wasn't HIS fault she had decided to step in. She couldn't even blame Eris for this. "I understand as much as I need to."
As she spoke, wisps of shadow began to coalesce in her upraised palm as she brought it up to waist height, tendrils of darkness crawling across her arm and dimming the sunlight around her. After her efforts in the massive bonewalker ambush and the events in the forests of Khathelet a few days ago, she felt much more comfortable with the stronger magics she had recently developed. Maybe not comfortable enough to fight two armed men simultaneously, but she was well past the point of backing out now, wasn't she? "Put. Him. Down."

'You're right about one thing,' Eh? What was she getting at? Was she trying to talk big in some way? The one carrying Aura looked at her with an angry expression. 'I understand as much as I need to,' oh goodness, this woman was crazy enough to start playing hero. His face spread with a wide and mocking grin. The arrogance was very clear.
He was about to retort against her and threaten her with a blade but then she took action. Dark tendrils were called forth blotting out the light around her in a threatening manner. "Woah. Okay then!"
'Put. Him. Down.' As you wish you volatile woman. Thump! Aura was tossed head first over his shoulder to crumple on the floor. Yep, he would feel that in his neck later tonight.
"You want a fight? Well then lets-"
"Hold!" The level headed companion ordered. There was no way he wanted to contend with her. A shaman summoning powerful magic is one thing, a shaman using magic with no tome is one thing, but both of these conditions together? No, he was not being paid enough for that sort of conflict. "Can you not see? She has no tome and yet she called on... That!" He shook his head. "No. The pay is not worth that risk. You want the fake priest you can have him." With that, he promptly turned sharply on his heel and walked away.
"What!? Are you kidding me!? She is just one girl!" His arguments cut short as he looked at the magic around him. "Well... then again... What is 500 gold?" He stepped away slowly before running after his partner.
Aura was in shock, not the rescue he expected, if he could expect one but thank Elimine! He wiggled in celebration as they left until a dark thought occurred, what if they came back when she would least expect it!? This thought was not all consuming but it was enough to cut his celebration short with a cold sweat.

.........Uh.
She had been trying to psyche herself up for a fight - and the possibility of dying horribly - and was actually doing a reasonably good job of it by her standards. Althea was actually pretty proud of herself, she was typically pretty bad with words (and brevity), but had managed to say something that actually sounded like a witty one-liner. That was a new high for her! Then her request had actually... been honored, and the bad guys just walked away. All things considered, the pale shaman was feeling INCREDIBLY stupid standing there uselessly, waiting for something to happen that apparently wasn't actually going to. How did you even react to a situation like that?
After standing there for a few more moments with the wind taken out of her sails, a very confused Althea stared blankly down at the trussed up 'fake priest' (what the hell did that mean?" as if expecting some kind of answer. From a guy who was gagged. Hm. And the other two men had disappeared. Still feeling like she had done something very wrong, she carefully walked over to the fallen Aura with a dubious expression on her face, the bulk of the dark magic she had been gathering dissipating behind her but a smaller quantity still being channeled, tendrils that wrapped around her hand almost uncomfortably tightly as she knelt down by the priest. She was... not good with ropes, and she didn't have an actual blade. Dammit.
"Stay still," was Althea's best imitation of a doctor's bedside manner, and then she reached in to grab the ropes with the ensorcelled hand, slipping it underneath with palm up, trying to focus a small Flux spell within her palm to (in theory) disintegrate that much of the rope while shielding Aura from the, er, negative effects of having a Flux spell cast right next to you. It wasn't exactly the cleanest cut or quite as fast as a sword, but after a few moments it still did enough damage to the ropes to sunder the worst of it... and she figured she'd let him deal with the gag. No sense in sticking her hand in any strange men's mouths.

......Uh.
Well, it seemed like they would not be coming back with fury? For now? Aura relaxed a bit and looked up at his savior with his good eye. Um, what was she staring at? Even without his depth perception he was confident there was nothing -oh wait, there she goes, she is moving again.
Woah, woah, woah, what was she doing with that tendril? Not so close not so close! Snap! The wrist bindings snapped free. Even with his minimal strength he could pull the remnants of the rope apart freeing himself. He pushed himself up into a sitting pose and took the makeshift gag out of his mouth with a coughing fit as he did so. "Ah, I -cough cough cough- thank you!" He began to stand. "Uh, well. I am -Oof!" He fell face first back into the dirt. Right right, the leg bindings.
He rolled over and began to mess with the thick ropes. The knots were done less with skill and more so many intertwining loops it was impossible to make sense of. "Ah curses!" He tried to undo it scrapping his finger futilely against the rope getting splinters and friction. He sighed audibly. "Uh, I am Aura."
Way to make an impression huh? He rubbed the back of his head nervously and soon did not want to be seen. It was easier to toss the hood of his robe up over his face and pretend he was talking to himself. "So, um, thank you very much, I don't have much money I fear, so, I can't really repay you. Oh, I know, do you take favors?" Did that sound wrong? "Nothing unseemly of course." Oh Elimine! She surely would think him insinuating something. "N-Not that you would be doing something so uncouth!" Uncouth? He never said uncouth or untoward, only unseemly, this changed context terribly! "What I mean is!" He just stopped looked straight and sighed. "I'm sorry."
Returning to awkward silence he proceeded to fidget with the leg bindings some more. Perhaps he could just drag himself into the village.

So you like 'em bound and gagged, dang you're into some kinky stuff huh? So help me Eris I will end you with a thought.
A small part of Althea had kinda been expecting the white haired man to suddenly teleport behind her and rip her head off or something, that would be about her luck with adventures these days, but he seemed more interested in being disoriented and forgetting his leg bindings. Well, not that she could judge him. She hadn't realized there were any in the first place. He also seemed determined to place both feet in his mouth simultaneously, which was a rather impressive feat that she could only applaud. Really, it was quite a splendid accomplishment. Either he was a REALLY good assassin who could perfectly mask his vile intentions beneath a facade of foolishness, or...
Yeah I think he's just an idiot
Well that was rude. Imagining kicking Eris in the shin, Althea managed a slight smile for Aura, still trying to put her thoughts together into a coherent response. None came to mind immediately, but he seemed like a... somewhat good person, just not entirely good at peopling. Well. She could empathize with that! Ha ha... dammit. "Althea," she offered sweetly enough, mostly because she hadn't said enough to make a fool of herself just yet. "And I'm just... glad to have been of service. Please don't concern yourself with repayment." Was she telling the truth? Althea had to admit to herself that she didn't actually know. She was definitely glad that it had worked out, at least for now. That she was still alive. That she hadn't had to hurt anyone. But there was a niggling feeling in the back of her mind, a sense that she had opened Pandora's box nonetheless.
And she wasn't sure she cared much for this hero thing, either. Whether or not it had been the right thing to do. Althea sighed and raised her hand again; Aura's fiddling with his legs was interfering with her train of thought. "Hold still." She repeated the process on the bindings holding his legs, though it took much longer due to the far greater thickness. It seemed as though they might have been more worried about limiting his mobility than his ability to use his arms? Concerned with his escape rather than his striking back...? That seemed odd to her, but well, she wasn't a kidnapping thug, so maybe she was just missing the point.
"...So what did they want with you?"

Despite or in spite of Aura's true er eloquence Althea smiled at him. He still felt absolutely foolish for everything he had said but that smile made him feel a little better. "Ah." He smiled back, oh goodness did he have a derpy smile. It was like a wide froggy type of grin without teeth.
"So, Althea, huh." Althea, Aura, Anne, there were a lot of 'A' names in his life was there not? "A names are pretty great huh?" That was the best he had, ugh. Wait, wait, wait, she wanted no sort of repayment? Was she just being kind out of a good Samaritan obligation? "Oh, surely there is something you need or want?" He hmmd as she broke open his legs' bindings. Oh good, he did not have to drag himself back into town now, that was a real plus.
Once that was done he wasted no time standing. "Oh... everything is spinning." He was suffering vertigo as the blood rushed back into the places in his body. "Uh, I can cook, clean, and heal." Well that just sounded like what most expected out of a woman. "Or, maybe not?" He shrugged it off at this point.
'...So what did they want with you?' NO, NO, NO! It was to be expected, it was only natural even, but did she HAVE to ask that question, that question was so pesky and irritating. How many times would he have to repeat it in different lands? He breathed deeply and sighed deeply. "Don't regret asking." He knew he should not be so open with these facts but to hide anything felt like a lie, or subversion of the truth and that just would not do.
"I have horrible memory loss and was a central part in some cult's ritual. I woke up being aided by an inquisitor who found me and helped me back on my feet. She got me back into the church where they helped me to try and regain my life but it turns out the inquisitor who saved me was a fake 'Anti-prophet heretic'. Mind you with my memory loss I am hard pressed to know anything about these global details already. News of me spread to their agents' ears and now I am hunted for reasons i can't begin to properly imagine." There was also the case of the carved knowledge down his back but that was full of some heavy nether ritual theory. Once someone explained it to him he knew he was supposed to become some sort of monster through it but they were stopped or it failed, maybe both. Or did it fail? He only awoke in the aftermath, what if it was him who killed all the cultists and the inquisitor just found him resting after. No, surely that was not how it happened. He shuttered just thinking of it.
"So, uh." He fidgeted and clutched his left arm as he finished his explanation. She was going to abandon him on the spot wasn't she? Or run, that seemed quite likely too actually.

I dunno, I think names beginning with E are a lot sexier, what about you?
Althea didn't bother gracing the notion with a response. Besides, everyone knew that names starting with A were the best. This Aura fellow seemed to be a bit touched in the head, but she chose to assume it was just a result of the beating rather than say anything natural to him. A little understanding went a long way, or at least a policy of non interventionism. And she was not exactly... immune to the ravages of weirdness herself, even without Eris in the picture. It was as much out of kindness as mutual embarrassment that she let his offers to cook and clean go by without a snarky response, there was simply nothing she could think of to say that would advance that line of thought in any practically useful way.
At any rate, Aura shared his story without much prodding, which was... nice? Althea regretted asking regardless, she liked mysteries and all but only when she knew how to figure out the answers. Those with constrained information, not enough to come to a conclusion, just frustrated her and showed how underwhelming her patience could be when not focused entirely on something that interested her. Not that it was Aura's fault, exactly. Just the facts of the situation as she saw them promised to create further problems for her in the future. She resisted the urge to facepalm. "Well, that's promising." There was a hint of amused irony in her words, but little else; there was no value in yelling at the poor sod and she didn't have much to contribute positively either. "Cults, amnesia, pursuers. Must make for an interesting life."
Pushing herself upright, Althea dusted herself off a bit, not that she was particularly filthy but she didn't like to be near... nature... without at least a wagon between her and the filth of natural existence. At least not when she could help it. "For now, we ought find you a healer. Can you walk?"

Well, she took it all far better than he had expected her to. That was a good thing? Or she was just pretending he was not a madman waiting to bite her throat out at a moments notice. Yes, she was probably scared of him and just being cordial. Well, Althea! You have nothing to fear from me! He thought it anyway.
He rubbed the back of his head. "Yeah, you can say that again. As far as I know I have only been alive for a few months now, but it has been nonstop excitement." And not the good kind. He watched her rise and brush herself off. It made him remember his own condition, oh goodness just how bad off was he. He must be absolutely filthy! Not to mention the smell, how unacceptable in the presence of a lady.
Now that he thought about it, he should get rid of his moth eaten robes. Yes! He should get some new clothes, something a little easier and not so standoutish.
Find a healer? Oh boy was that ironic! He felt his face and was received with a sharp pain and a hand covered in both wet and cracked dried blood. "A healer and a bath... isn't it odd? I can be a healer and help others all I want but at the end of the day I can't heal my own wounds?" He sighed. "Yes, I can wa-AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!" Oh! Oh goodness did his legs burn and buckle. How much did he strain them in that chase? He managed a steps but wobbled and bent. His knees not holding him up just right.
He stopped walking and supported himself with his hands on his knees. "I got it." He laughed sheepishly. "I just uh, I just need a moment, yeah."

"Nonstop excitement." The shamaness's face twisted between expressions for a moment, ending in a miserable, sympathetic smile of sorts. "I am... all too familiar with that myself." If it wasn't one thing it was another, huh? Her adventures with dark magic and monsters, his being chased by Etrurian inquisitors and hooligans, she couldn't actually tell whether they had that much in common or if it'd be likely to visit their respective bad luck on each other if she stayed with him for too long. Probably a bit of both. And probably far too late to worry about it. What manner of hero was she, that practicality and avoiding trouble was at the forefront of her thoughts rather than how to help others? Not a god damn hero, in fact, and that was the point!
At the same time, though, she couldn't just entirely ignore these kinds of scenes when she came across them... and at this point the damage was already done. Though Aura said something interesting that distracted her attention from the self-recrimination. "I was under the impression that clerics could heal themselves," she noted in a somewhat dubious tone with an eyebrow raised. Althea was no expert on healing magic - she did want to learn it eventually though, if she had the time - but she had definitely heard of staff users healing themselves to at least some degree. Was Aura too incompetent to do that, or too injured to focus well enough to do it? Or was he lying about being a healer? The thugs had called him a false priest, after all. Ehh... didn't matter that much. She would probably never see him again after today after all, so if he wasn't actively endangering her she could put up with a little weirdness.
...She wasn't going to carry the lug anywhere, though. Althea was pretty sure that she couldn't even if she wanted to. "...Should I call the guards to help move you, or...?"

Hmm? What is this about knowing all about this excitement? He was tempted to make a light joke but then he saw her face. What was that look for? It took him aback unsure of what to say, perhaps nothing would be the better option. "Is everything... never mind." Is everything alright? Do you want to talk about it? There were options but silence seemed the most appropriate. Something in him screamed kindred spirits but that may not be a good thing. He was at a loss for words and for a brief moment he just found himself smiling back sympathetically, like he wanted to tell her everything would be alright. Those were his feelings but his head told him he was an idiot. To stop overanalizing and being stupid.
"Come again? Healers healing themselves?" His face went blank. He just clammed up and stared at her blankly. Could a healer heal himself? He found his mouth going slightly agape and recovered himself turning red-faced despite the pale blood loss. "Uh... I have never even tried this before." He fidgeted in place. Composing himself he focused his magic a soft green glow forming in his hands. It flickered in and out with shimmering sparkles. He brought it to his face and slowly the swelling retreated. He visibly winced at the feeling of rapid healing.
As the light slowly died down he looked amazed, proud even of what he had just done, and then... Kerpumph! "Ooooo, I feel sick." Internal healing seemed to take a lot out of him. "I'm better though. Oooourgh." This display was real pathetic.
At the mentioning of guards he seemed to recover, at least mostly. "NO! NO PLEASE, no guards!" His face was pleading and fearful. "I don't trust them. You never know who they serve, and they have sharp weapon!" His description was juvenile but fear was primal, so it was appropriate.
In fact, this seemed to spark him forth with newfound strength. "I can walk. S-s-see?" He groaned something fierce as he got to his feet once more. I just, need a place to stay the night. An inn, or chur- no, not church." Oh boy, no inn either, he had no money. "Come to think of it... a roof of anykind is fine."

So this is what a 'moment' was like. How intriguing. Althea recorded the thought for future consideration. Just because she wasn't good at peopling didn't mean she had no interest whatsoever in learning... just not enough drive to actually do it. Hypocrisy at its finest!
...She had been kind of expecting a comment from Eris somewhere in there, but the aggravating spirit seemed to have gone quiet for no apparent reason. Not that Althea was complaining about that development of course, it was just unexpected. Maybe today would actually be a good day after all. Regardless, it seemed that Aura was actually an idiot or actually that naive - she wasn't sure which was worse (better?) or more accurate for that matter. Althea was the last person to speak ill of others in regards to lacking personal perspective, she was generally aware of her own failings in that regard, but it was hard to imagine not at least trying that. The preservation of self was a self-evident proposition, a value higher than any other. ...Was it? She thought so, or at least she had thought so. In the moment, the shaman wasn't entirely sure what the meaning in that distinction was or how she felt on the subject. It wasn't like her to go out and help people, anyways, but she couldn't really blame Eris for that... probably... haha just kidding she'd blame the gobshite ghost for everything if she had to.
On the bright side, Aura's little healing experiment did seem to work out, though it seemed to take a lot out of him. "Interesting. The enhanced concentration necessary must make self-healing more intellectually exhausting and perhaps even magically drain. To regulate internal, ongoing processes without the divide of separation that those of another would have..." How interesting. If staves could indeed be used on the self, that certainly made them a much more valuable tool to consider picking up at some point later. Althea didn't see any need to admit to Aura that she hadn't actually known if you could use a staff on yourself or not, she'd just heard of it before and assumed it was true.
"...No guards then." His reaction had been almost amusing in a sadistic sort of way.
