A week after Bare Bones
Mila was out in the training fields again. This time with a new spellbook and several bottles of questionable materials in her bag. It had been a week since the group of them disposed of the monsters that had been plaguing the village. One week since she last heard of Bee. The little mage seemed to disappear on a whim and left most of her stuff behind. Not wanting the pink haired mage's stuff to go to the trash bin, she decided to hold on to it until the fire mage returned from wherever she went.
"Geeze.. why does she have so many bottles of this stuff?" The sage asked as she delicately put the bottles of various magical grenades on the grassy floor. Mila saw no reason to have all this stuff on one person. Especially when mages had access to basic spells that did all that stuff and more. Mila was uncomfortable leaving all these potential explosives inside the town. On their own. If any one of these babies went off within the confines of the inn, there would be hell to pay. She wasn't fond of carrying them all on her person either. She didn't want to blow up either. Maybe she'd pawn off a few of these grenades to help replenish the reserves of the villagers.
Mila shook her head slightly and grabbed her Gaea tome. The area she was in had a small man-made tributary. The small man-made channel fed until another tributary that extended into the irrigation canals this village had in place. The ground on both sides of the channel was soft and mushy. It would be easy to maneuver with the Gaea tome. She needed to practice her earth magic on some soft malleable dirt to give herself a break from the wall construction she had been doing since the attack.

Samantha had been up for a while at this point. She had slept well last night and still gotten up early, a combination she enjoyed. While she enjoyed her nightly rest, she also hated the idea of sleeping the day away. There was already so little time to do things in a day, to waste more time sleeping longer than she needed always upset her. And recently, she had been working on mastering her newest tome. Or rather, working on wielding it at all. It wasn't the easiest magic to wield, she was quickly finding out. But she was confident in her abilities. Ever since Mila was able to help her through her wind magic blockage, her confidence when it came to learning new spells was much higher. She knew she could do it, it was just putting the work in. And that was her favorite part.
For the last week, as she stayed with Mila to help the town. It was a nice change of pace, even if it wouldn't last forever. But then again, the best things in life never do. Sam had taken this unexpected downtime to work with her Fimbulvetr tome. She found herself escaping to the training fields every day the past week, away from anyone she might accidentally hurt if the spell went wrong, to work on a basic understanding of his. It was exhausting work, she know had even more respect for Mila and all of her recent use of her Gaea tome. Speaking of her friend, it appeared she wasn't the only one who had the idea to make use of the grounds. Giving a smile and a small wave, Sam moved over to Mila. "Good morning, Mila. I didn't expect to see you here today. What a pleasant surprise."

The sage carefully put her bag and Bee's former bag of hazardous bottles on the ground. She had grabbed her Gaea tome out of her bag and was quietly concentrating on the earth around her. The soft muddy earth moved easily under her magical guidance. She had learned that Gaea's magic's weight was proportionate to the amount of earth one was moving as well as the type. The hard stone walls she had helped to construct felt heavy. While this softer earth sort of felt like she was pushing around some baker's dough. She was using both her hands in this spell so her tome was on the ground, held open with her foot. An earthen mound had appeared about five feet in front of her. She had gotten the hang of manipulating the earth to the point where her training dummies could pass as amateur sculptures. They had come quite a long way from the simple stick man figures she used to make. These dummies still served the same purpose as the old stick man's but at least now she had a feel for making realistic limbs and positions. Perhaps one day she'd be skilled enough to actually make mobile stone soldiers so that they could be sent into particularly dangerous areas in her monster research. Particularly areas where terrain hazards were a thing.
Mila had just finished making the last of the finishing touches to her newest clay man. She made it look like a foot soldier with a generic set of armor. The mud man's face was hidden away under his helmet. To which she was tracing her fingers in small downward vertical lines to make the little helmet visors. She finished the sculpture by pressing her hands together to harden the clay-like earth so that the mud man would keep his form. She had let out a sigh of releif, then greeted her friend Sam.
"Hey, Sam." She smiled.
"Yeah, I needed a bit of a break from the village." She gently rolled her shoulders.

She was at it again. Mila was such an incredible mage, it both depressed and inspired Samantha. Her friend was so far ahead of her in the study of magic, it made all the progress that she had made seem minor. At the same time, it gave her something to strive for. Mila always seemed to be showing her new things that were possible, it just showed that there was always more to learn. And to Sam, there were few things more important than learning new things.
Walking closer, Sam couldn't help but admire her work with Gaea. She had created an entire soldier out of the earth. It was marvelous. Hoping that her friend didn't mind, the blue haired mage slowly walked a circle around it to take everything in. She had never been particularly good at art and all that, but she could appreciate the work that went into it. "You never cease to astound me, Mila..." Leaning closer, Samantha noted some of the little details that her friend had put into the soldier that she never would have thought of. She wasn't lying, her work was phenomenal.
Turning her attention back to Mila, she gave her another smile. "If I'm lucky, someday I'll be half as talented as you." She noted Mila rolling her shoulders. "If your shoulders are bothering you, I can massage them for you later. I'm pretty good at working knots and the like out." Her father was always tense from the stress of living and working in Ilia, so her mother had shown her at a young age how to work out all the knots and kinks in a back. She rarely got to use those skills nowadays, but she would be willing to for Mila if she needed.

"Ooh a shoulder rub sounds wonderful. Earth magic is really heavy. Every time I use it I feel like I've been lifting barrels." Mila commented before looking back at her earth statue. He wasn't half bad. A really generic looking foot solider. No house crest on him but that was ok. She was missing a few details like the chain mail that goes under the armor.
"You've got more talent in you then you think. You just need some practice. And confidence. And.. hey didn't we talk about this before?" Mila smirked a bit. She remembered their last encounter with magic. Both of them teasing each other with the river water and Mila helping Sam with her wind magic. Mila put her hand on the soil made soldier.
"I've come a long way from wonky coat rack." She grinned. Then took a step back.
"Right. So how bout some more practice.. to be honest I've been itching to try out Bee's Volcannon tome." The sage pulled out the red colored tome.
"Been meaning to return it to her but she just up and vanished." The sage shrugged. Her fingers opened up the book to the page she left off at. Mila was reading through the tome as the days passed. It was just a thing she did before she casted any new spell.
"This things wording is like Gaea's. But it's not as complicated since we are familiar with Trinity that has fire in it already. That's not to say it isn't hard. Yesterday I tried to focus a ball of it in my hand like Trinity's fire.. nearly lost an eyebrow in the process."

Sam give Mila a warm smile. "Once we finish training, I'll give you one. My fingers are as magic as my spells, you know. Your shoulders will feel amazing afterwards." She hadn't actually given a massage in quite some time, so she was looking forward to it. It was an enjoyable feeling, to search someone's muscles to find the knots in them and slowly work them out. It was rewarding too, because you got to make them feel better than they had. It was probably the closest she'd ever come to healing magic.
The blue haired magic gave a small giggle as Mila's words. "It's not a confidence thing, I can just recognize the level of ability that you're at and how far ahead of me you are. I plan to work hard to catch you, but your powers are very impressive. I may not be able to." It was the truth. Mila seemed to have a higher magical ceiling than Sam, and she was fine with that. Knowing your limits was important. Besides, if she could master Fimbulvetr, she would be happy. Then she could return to her pursuit of knowledge. If she was lucky, maybe Mila would join her.
Samantha listened as Mila talked about trying to use Bee's Volcannon tome. It was strange that the girl had just left it behind. Although, there was no one better than Mila to wield it. It seemed time had finally reveal the secret she had been keeping. "I can finally show you what I've been practicing. There's still a long way to go, but I'm making progress." Reaching into her bag, she slid out the old Fimbulvetr tome she had found with Shara and held it to her chest with both of her arms. It was the first time she showed it to anyone, but if it was shown to anyone, it had to be Mila.

"I have every bit of confidence you will catch up to me and maybe even surpass me one day." Mila patted Sam on the shoulder. Sam already had some of the hallmark characteristics of becoming a great sage. She was calm, rational, driven, and patient. Three qualities you needed in order to become a good sage. Mila blanked out for a moment trying to think on what other attributes were needed to be a good sage. Then again she had to sit down to think about exactly what separated a good sage from a bad one. She didn't really know any bad sages. At least not bad in the sense of them being able to cast magic. Maybe their profession was bad but maybe not their ability to channel magic. And that's when Sam told her what magic she had been practicing.
"Oh hey! Is that a Fimbulvetr tome?" Mila leaned her head in a bit to look at the blue bound book.
"I'm so glad you've got one! I hear they are a little hard to come by." She smiled softly then stood back up.
"It.. suits you. Like.. it really suits you. You're from Ilia land of ice. You've got blue hair. You've got a good clear head on your shoulders. And the timing for this couldn't be better. I've got a fire to practice.. and you've got water and ice to help put out the mess ups." Mila wasn't hoping to not have any screw ups. But, this was a new magic and she wasn't fully used to casting it yet.
"Well, shall we get started?"

Samantha felt her chest swell as Mila complimented her, saying that she believed that she could one day pass Mila herself. While she might not have necessarily agreed, as she thought Mila was leagues above her, it was still nice to hear praise from her friend. She couldn't help but smile down at her friend. Although Sam might be the taller one, she looked up to Mila a lot.
When Mila asked about her tome, Sam eagerly nodded her head. "Yes, it is Fimbulvetr. It took a lot of searching to find one, and I finally found this one in a cave in Ilia. You're actually the first person I've shown it to." It was a rare tome, and the blue haired mage didn't want to have to worry about others trying to steal it. Not after all the work she put in to find it.
Once again, Mila made her feel good inside by comparing her to the tome. It was strange, to be pleased at such a comparison, but she couldn't help it. Mila made her feel like no one else could, and she wasn't sure how long they'd be together this time before they separated again, so she wanted to enjoy it as much as possible while she could. "I doubt very much that you'll mess up. But if you do, I'll always be there to help." She gave her friend another small smile before nodding. "Yes, let's. Why don't you go first? I'm eager to see you try out that tome."

"Eager to see it work too huh. To be honest I haven't had much practice with it. It's SO much stronger then fire to the point where I literally feel the heat." Mila held up her fingers. Some of them had patches of raw red skin.
"I didn't lose an eyebrow but I lost some finger skin. The heal staff ensures that it'll grow back fine. But it's annoying as heck to write with." She shook her head and picked up the red tome.
"I think I am starting to understand it a bit though. It's like trying to hold a bag full of liquid. But it's not really a liquid. It's got air to it and less weight. But it behaves like a liquid if that makes any sense. At least that's the way I think it feels like when I try to keep a ball of it in my hands." She had the book open in front of her and her focus was on the words on the page. She read them in her head silently.
"But it isn't water.. it's fire. It wants to move. It wants to grow. If flickers and fizzles and likes to ruin my concentration. You can't keep it held in place for very long. But, I can see it having so many practical uses. It's a heck of a lot hotter then just the standard fire. It has the potential to forge, bake, and boil things." She took several steps away from the dummy.
"It's a fascinating spell and one I hope to master eventually with out burning myself. Who knows maybe one day I can make a fiery friend for Mister clay solider over there." She motioned for Sam to move away from the clay solider. Mila closed her eyes and focused on the spell. She calmed her mind and exhaled. Focus. Slowly, the elements of fire started to congregate in her open palm. The orb of orange fire lingered for a moment as a perfect sphere of light and magic. Until it started to twirl and flicker. The fire was looking for air. It wanted to move. And Mila had little time to react to it's desire to move. She knew it wanted to move. She could feel the fire trying to wriggle out of her hands. The wriggling felt like a giant mass of worms that tried to escape out of the little space gaps in between her fingers. But these weren't worms, worms were cold, they were safe to the touch. This, this was fire. This was heat. This was burning and singing her skin. She needed to move the fire quickly before she lost her hands entirely.
She looked like she was in some mild pain. But she quickly maneuvered her hand pushed the hovering ball of fire forward. And then, it moved. It didn't move slowly like a regular ball of trinity fire. A ball of regular fire would have moved as a ball of regular fire. No, this ball of fire moved in a burst. As if someone had uncorked the side hole of a wine barrel. A mass of fire spurted out of the orb in a straight line right at the dummy. The fire hit the dummy. But it did not stop hitting the dummy. It kept hitting the dummy in a steady continuous stream of fire. And this effect lasted for about two minutes before Mila called off the spell and sat down on the floor. The sage quickly shoved her hand into the cold mud and swore she could hear bits of it sizzle.

Samantha was quiet as Mila began to talk about the spell she had been working on. It was always fascinating to listen to people talk about spells that she didn't know yet, or even those that she did. While there were obvious similarities, everyone cast magic in different ways. And as she held Mila in such high regard, it was even more interesting to listen to her speak. Not to mention that she liked the sound of Mila's voice, but that was neither here nor there. She listened closely as her fellow magic user went on about how the fire wanted to escape from her hands. Sam had a vague idea what she meant, as a standard fireball acted in the same way. Though, she suspected Volcanon was stronger and more unpredictable.
Moving away quickly from the dummy, she watched as Mila began to summon the fire. It was definitely not a normal fireball, as it seemed to fight against her control from the moment it was formed. Sam wasn't sure if something was wrong or not, but Mila definitely looked to be in some pain as she tried to control it. She wanted to make her stop, so she didn't hurt herself. But Mila looked to be in control and the stream of fire that she conjured was truly a sight to behold. For a few moments, Samantha was completely enthralled by the magic. When Mila finished, however, her concern returned.
Hurrying over to her, Sam opened up her own Fimbulvetr tome. There was a faint sizzling noise coming from the mud that Mila had shoved her hands into, and she didn't like it. Holding out her own hands, she looked at Mila with concern in her eyes. "Quick, give me your hands." When she did, the Ilian began to read from her own book. Water was pulled from the air and into a liquid form. Moving her hands fluidly, she allowed the cold water to run over Mila's hands, hoping to stop any burns from getting worse. "How's that feel?"

Mila pulled her hand out of the mud and winced a bit at it. The hand was red and starting to welt. Sam rushed over and quickly doused the hand in icy cold water. Mila yelped. She yelped not because she was in pain, but because the cold water was just that much of a shock to her recently burnt hand. The sage quickly pulled out her staff and focused. The glass orb on top glowed in a soft white light. Her hand started to feel a lot better. Skin started to mend itself and the welts slowly dissipated.
"Better Thank you." She smiled softly. The green haired sage then rooted around her bag for some clean bandages. She carefully shook her hand dry then wrapped the hand in the cloth bandages.
"Don't worry about me. Until, I get the hang of the spell burns like this are going to be common. But, luckily I know how to heal myself. I'm just glad it was only one hand this time." She smiled softly. She was trying to be as optimistic as possible about nearly burning her hands to the bone. I've got to be careful.
She slowly pulled herself up and took a look at the clay knight she made. The poor thing was black as coal and appeared to be melted on one side.
"Aw." She sounded disappointed. The sage was hoping to have baked the clay man into a something that resembled the consistency of a clay pot. Not something that resembled the forge the clay pot came out of.

When Mila yelped, Sam couldn't help but wince. She knew it was in part to how cold the water was. She was still trying to figure out how to manage the actual temperature of the water, instead of having it all just really cold. That was part of practicing, though, right? In time, she'd get better and hopefully would be able to conjure varying temperatures of water.
The blue haired mage then watched as Mila began to heal her burn. Healing magic had never been something Samantha had taken to, but it had always been something that she felt she should try to focus on more. Even if she wasn't the best at it, knowing how to heal at least minor wounds would be a helpful thing to know for the future. Especially if there were more fights with monsters and the like to look forward to.
"I know you can heal yourself, but I'll still worry. It's what friends do." She gave smile a small smile as the girl got up to her feet. Sam walked with her over to the soldier, noting Mila's disappointment. "I'm sure you'll get there in time. You're a great mage, Mila. I have faith in you." Another smile grew on her lips. It was true, Mila was probably the best mage that she knew.
Still holding her tome to her chest, Sam bit her lip lightly. "Would you like to see what I can do with this? It's not much, by any means, but I'm starting to get there."

"Thanks, Sam. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it eventually." Mila spoke as she gently dusted off the shoulder of the recently baked soldier. She took a few paces back and took a seat on a dry patch of land.
"Yep, I'm ready to see what you can do with that thing. Fimbulver is the next tome I plan to learn how to use so watching you is going to be super useful." That was a half truth. In honesty, Fimbuler WAS going to be the next tome she was to pick up. But, she had been hearing some strange rumors from travelers about new magic. Supposedly it was a magic that allowed for the manipulation of plants. If that was the case then the sage would definitely be picking that spell up over fimbulur, especially if she could find a way to tie it into the Gaea's magic. She could see the possibilities of a reliable, mobile, mini farms that would help stave off hunger in between journeys. But, if the rumor proved to be false then she'd be picking up the ice and water tome for herself.
The true part to that statement was that she was eager to see how Sam fared with the new spell. Last time she remembered the Ilian struggled with wind magic. Although now she wondered how the mage would do with a spell that was completely outside the realm of Trinity's basics. Would she need help with it like she did wind? Or will she be proficient with it like Mila hoped she would?

Once Sam made sure that Mila was behind her, she pulled her tome away from her chest and slowly opened it. Fimbulvetr wasn't an easy tome to wield. It was certainly more difficult than fire, wind, or thunder. And that included the difficulties that she had had learning wind. That being said, she had so far been able to use the advice that Mila had given her during that time to make larger strides when it came to mastering this element.
Fimbulvetr was unique, as it actually encompassed two different elements: water and ice. Samantha had been doing her best to work equally on learning both of them. From what she understood, you would focus simply on one or the other and become proficient in it without every bothering with the other. But in her mind, knowing and being able to use both would be much more effective. She would be able to use one to compliment the other and create more impressive and useful magic.
Softly reading the words from the tome to herself, the blue hair mage slowly rose up her arm. As she did, a small amount of water began to rise from the ground at the foot of Mila's clay soldier. Admittedly, it was easier to this against a stationary target, but it was a step in the right direction. The stream of water slowly curled it's way up the soldier's body, stopping when it reached the head. Sam then closed her fist and slowly the water turned into ice. When it was done, she unclenched her fist and gasped for air. "Whew. In theory, when I get better at it, I should be able to do that in not more than a few seconds. Should really help for freezing people in their tracks, pun not intended."

Mila watched as Sam started to cast her spell. She watched the water move like a snake, crawling up a body before delivering its own final icy bite. She honestly wasn't expecting the water portion of the spell to be so fluid. No pun intended. She expected a large burst of water, like a geyser getting out at the muddy statue. Maybe with some practice. Mila's mind began racing with all sorts of useful applications for such a tome.
"Quite the demonstration." She smiled softly. Sam has come a long way since their last magic session.
"Snaring one's foes to provide support for the team is a useful tactic. Freezing bodies of water to create a barrier of slippery ice.. or a possible means to cross a body of water. Hmm.."She raised a finger to her chin and thought some more. "You could use the ice water to generate little chunks of ice to help cool a person down. Or use it to help numb sprains." Mila nodded. She looked up at the sky and saw where the sun was. Right in the center of the sky. That meant it was currently noon. The young sage hadn't realized how long they were both out for in all of the training and commotion.
"Ah, well you feeling up for another round of magic or do you want to go get some lunch? It would be my treat." She offered. And to be honest the green haired sage was feeling quite peckish. Magic had a way of draining the human body the same way all sorts of physical activity did.
"Sun's kinda high, I wouldn't mind a drink either." She casually scratched her chin and neck.
