Kayla and the pegasus Polly were stuck in a shack. There was quite the storm outside and it was far too dangerous to fly in. Thunder and lightning punctuated the constant drone of the rain drops colliding with the small building. Kayla was looking out through a window to try to gain some insight onto the duration of the storm. From the looks of it the clouds weren’t breaking anytime soon. So it seemed like she would be here for a while.
Kayla moved over to her mount and placed her hand on the winged horse’s muzzle. She let out a long sigh. “Looks like were gonna be here a while. Know any good stories?” Who was she kidding? Kayla had been with Polly since she was in training. They had already shared all the stories prior to when they became partners.
Perhaps they could play a game. That was it! “You know how to play rock paper scissors right?” Polly stomped a hoof against the wooden floor. “Oh yeah. That’s right.” Pegasus don’t have hands. But that wasn’t going to stop Kayla, she would find something entertaining to pass the time. Something productive at that.
Then an idea came to her. Polly was more than a pet, the winged horse was a partner. But that didn’t mean that they couldn’t learn some tricks. Kayla moved over to her knapsack and withdrew three apples. Polly bobbed a head at the sight of the treats. “Ooohh excited aintcha? Well you’re gonna have to work for these bad boys.” Kayla split each of the apples into fourths against the blade of her iron lance. Kayla held a total of twelve pieces as she travelled back to the pegasus.
Polly’s nose began to encroach and sniff for the treats, but Kayla placed them behind herself and blocked the white steed from them with a hand. “What did I just say? Sheesh Polly, you gotta learn to listen better.” Kayla’s face lit up with a little smirk. “And to that effect, were gonna learn how to do a couple tricks. Sounds fun huh?” Polly let out a puff of air into Kayla’s face. Kayla’s smile turned into a grouchy grimace. The pegasus knight wiped her face and spoke.
“Oh come on, don’t be such a party pooper. You big stinker.” Kayla held out one apple slice as incentive. Then came the sniffing again. Kayla tossed the apple slice to the Pegasus. “Here you go, but you have to cooperate with me okay?” The Pegasus began to munch away at the apple slice. “Good, glad we have an understanding.” Kayla held out a palm. “Now shake!” The winged horse didn’t move a muscle. The rider grabbed at her steed’s hoof and pulled. “Come on Polly, I said shake.” The steed raised the hoof slightly, just enough to make Kayla lose her balance and fall onto her butt.
She giggled lightly at the scene. “Good job there. Now that’s something we can work with.” Kayla tossed Polly another apple slice from her seated position.
