There was a small fishing town here. Was being the operative word. It was now uninhabited, abandoned. Even while humans weren’t around, their trash still lingered. Their history littered the world while Khalil’s had been eradicated. Sickening. Why did they even make this town in the first place? Did they have so little forethought to notice that this wasn't a permanent settlement? Maybe some of those bandit humans came through and terrorized the town enough to convince them to pack their bags. Either way, humans were to blame. But that was nothing new for Khalil.
It was peaceful though. Khalil’s thoughts aside, it was a calm day without a cloud in the sky. Above the water, everything was perfect. On the surface, today was a day like any other in an abandoned fishing town. The only difference was today, there was a disgruntled dragon in the water.
Khalil was floating offshore. He was adrift in a vast ocean. It didn’t matter where exactly. He was drifting on his back, in human form, allowing the tide to rock him to and fro. His beady eyes were open, staring at the blue sky above. His ears were submerged, hearing the muted motion of the world beneath the waves. It was a curious thing to think about. The oceans can somehow seem vast while being full of activity. There was an ever present current, driving motion and action. However, only once in a while would you see a fish, or piece of kelp following that current. The majority of the time was so quiet, so empty. Not that Khalil’s life above the waves was much different. All he had left was a grudge.
These moments of self-pity were far too common for the water dragon. His only remaining goals in life were so large and arduous. They would take much effort and patience. Not to mention how unpleasant they were. If only Khalil were still as strong as he had once been. Khalil let out a breath. His strength didn’t help him when the humans came for his family. Monsters. The humans were the sole reason for his loneliness. How many millennia of happiness had they taken from him? They wouldn’t even be able to fathom. It was because of them and their insecurities. Their lack of empathy. Ruthlessness. Brutality. Cruelty.
Khalil’s thoughts grew less coherent. He didn’t want to get himself all worked up but his emotions were getting away from him. His anger was dominating his rational side. He could feel his blood getting hotter. Now he was a prisoner in his own damned skin. For fear of being noticed by the same ones he wants to reveal his true self to. He wanted them to see what he was, what they had missed, what they had forgotten. He wanted to show them what a dragon really was, what they were so terrified of.
And to remind them why they were so terrified.
