Name: Zain
Class: Hunter
Dragon Element: N/A
Age: 16
Born in: A small hamlet in Caelin, somewhere near the castle.
Appearance: Zain has jet-black hair that is somewhat long, falling to about his eyes and nape of his neck. He has dull green eyes. He wears a fayed travelling cloak and scuffed boots as well as the simple, practical garments of an adventurer (with a few leather patches on his knees, elbows and forearms for his bow). He has a journal in a satchel that he keeps with him at all times and a pack with his essentials. Zain stands at 5 feet 6 inches, a bit short for his age and has a thin, wiry build.
Personality: Zain, growing up in a small peasant town is ever the pragmatist, prioritizing survival over sentimentality. He is, however, quite intelligent and surprisingly literate. He possesses an analytical mind well suited to devising tactics and new ideas which he writes down in his notebook (Even some militiamen in his village admired his talent for thinking out tactics). He tends to keep to himself and isn't the most confident person. His desire is to see the world and record his adventures. One day, he aspires to be a scholar and tactician.(He loved to read history books about ancient battles as a child) and live in Pherae, where he can put both bow and book to use in their armies, which he had he read about and admired. Zain is disgusted by the ideas of good and evil, believing they are just convoluted words spawned by human nature used to justify idealism. He is not particularly reverent, and he is extremely frank and concise when he speaks to others, which is rarely. He prefers the company of a pen and parchment to actually humans.
History: Zain was born into a family of woodcarvers. His father was an archer for the town's small militia that had kept the town safe for decades, and his mother assisted him in maintaining the lance shafts and bows of the militiamen. As such, in a village where everyone had to contribute fill stomachs and coffers, he was taught to use a bow at a young age and regularly hunted to add a bit more food to the larders of his family. He was taught to read and write by a kindly priest in his village and wanted to become a mage, though he was too poor to do so. His desire was to travel the whole of the world as a child. However, when a huge bandit attack came that the militiamen could not fend off, Zain tried his best and fought with the defenders---and saw his childhood friends and mother die alike. This would shape his view of the world. His father took him and escaped to the main castle of Caelin, where he spent 2 years studying tactics and archery alike. After his father passed away from sickness he resolved to leave the castle and begin traveling to sate his appetite for adventure. He figures if he can survive the bandit infested roads out of Caelin then he might as well give the rest of the world a shot. Who knows? Maybe he can put his tactical prowess and trusty bow to use in the armies of Pherae.
NPC fight: Zain uses a deliberate, tactical approach to battle which is well thought through. Zain knows he won't stand a chance in open combat and isn't very physically capable compared to many enemies, so he prefers to hide and get the jump on his foes, aiming for lethal wounds like the head and throat. If sneaking by is not an option and open combat is inevitable, he'll try to bait his enemy into a position that is favorable to him and predict their movements. If he is fighting a group of enemies he'll get them into a position like an alley or forest that nullifies that advantage numbers grant them. He favors small skirmishes that slowly chip away at an enemy rather than a large, long costly battle. He is constantly trying to expand his knowledge of tactics and will adapt them accordingly.
Example:
Zain knew he was fighting a losing battle when he glanced backwards from his post at the militia's palisades and saw the first flames cropping up on the south walls and the many corpses of the defenders---brigands streamed past the bodies and surged towards the running villagers. Zain nocked an arrow, hand shaking as he fought back gasping sobs and tears. The ragged remains of the militia's lancers had been decimated by the ax wielding brigands, and he had no one to cover his position. The bandits had advanced on his position, smiling at the prospect of another kill. They wouldn't be killing anymore people today. Hopefully, Zain thought grimly. Probably wishful thinking that i'll survive. He stayed his hand and released, the string smacking his leather brace. The arrow sunk into the shoulder of a charging brigand, causing him to drop one ax---though he still charged forward and followed through with a stroke that graved Zain's thigh as he tried to jump back. He winced and yelled out. Zain desperately lashes out with his foot, aiming for the bandit's groin. As he doubles over Zain releases an arrow into his stomach. He falls and lies still on the ground. As the adrenaline fades, Zain winces and gingerly touches his knee. How? Why won't I die? Guess it's not my turn to rest yet. Zain grimly smiles through his tears and fits another arrow to the string.
PC fight: Again, if open combat against a single skilled opponent is necessary, Zain will try to agitate and put the opponent off balance and lure the opponent into a trap, where he will attempt to kill the other PC.
